Agriculture: This Summer I Will Make a Garden

Broccoli heading for a new garden bed Photo by Eric Rouleau Tuning in this morning to Ici Musique, the Montréal radio station, we were immediately reminded that it's Earth Day. The theme of Eric's favorite program was songs involving gardens. Appropriately, I had scheduled this weekend to be a full weekend of working in the vegetable garden. Rather than plain old Earth Day, though, I'd call it Earth Moving Day. The garden this year is, at least at the initial stages, something of a back breaker. Spring garden preparation is always strenuous. It inevitably requires digging to prepare planting beds and hauling compost. This year, I've made the compost distribution an add-on to daily chores. After I unload the muck from the barn floor on the still decomposing part of the my compost mountain, I wheel the cart down the other side and fill it with already cured compost. I then wheel that to the vegetable garden (Doodle of course tagging along), dump the compost on a planting bed, and bring the cart back to the barn to fill it with the next load of muck, starting the cycle again. In addition to the usual garden prep, there are other elements that render "making the garden" particularly strenuous this year. First, we are installing what I hope will be rabbit and groundhog proof fencing around a new perimeter line. Macho Matt started us on that process by putting in gate posts and gates, and installing the first two sections of fence along the lines we all laid out. We've continued the work, pounding in metal fence posts, then using twisted wire to affix three foot high rigid metal hog panels to the posts. This in and of itself is a relatively quick and efficient process, but it's really only the beginning. Once the hog panels are up, we dig a trench a bit more than a foot wide around the outside of the fence, and then attach four foot high chicken wire to the metal hog panels. The upper three feet of chicken wire is vertical against the hog panels. The last foot is flush to the ground, and then covered back over with the layer of soil we dug out. I thank my sister for this suggestion. She says the groundhogs start digging to get under the fence, but when they hit the chicken wire they get frustrated and go elsewhere. Determined as I am that this year the garden will feed us humans, not rabbits and groundhogs, we are going that extra mile toward impregnability. In addition to new fencing, we are reconfiguring the garden beds. Last year, as Eric and I were feeling our way toward living as a couple, he had occasion to remark that I was a bohemian, while he was a cartesian. He was referring to much thornier issues than the garden, but it turns out he was correct up and down the line. You can see it in our respective approaches to garden beds. Many of you have, when visiting in the past, remarked on my unusual use of round planting beds. Well, they are being phased out, at Eric's suggestion. He acknowledges that there is a place for charm in the garden, but feels that vegetables are pretty charming all by themselves and that the quest for visual interest must be reconciled with efficiency. Rectangular beds will make mowing and other maintenance considerably less strenuous, and Eric convinced me that I should try to keep the work to the essential -- and to what I can really accomplish. Eric went on line and got a garden planning program, and we together this winter created a plan for everything other than the tomato patch. We've been assiduously following it. Unfortunately, this too involves a great deal of earth moving. To put the beds where we want them in the shape we want them to have, we are digging up large clumps of lawn in some places, and moving them, as turf, to other places that may have been planting beds before. At times it seems all the soil in the garden is moving from one place to another. It's fun to see the transformation, but exhausting. Do I mind? Not at all. A vegetable garden is not just a utilitarian tool. It's a creation, an expression of value, and in some very real senses an act of love. One of the most beautiful songs in the repertoire of québecois music to which Eric has introduced me is by poet and songwriter Clémence DesRochers, the first verse of which is: Cet été je ferai un jardin Si tu veux rester avec moi Encore quelques mois Il sera petit, c'est certain J'en prendrai bien soin J'en prendrai bien soin Pour qu'il soit aussi beau que toi. (This summer I will make a garden, If you want to stay with me A few months longer It will be small, surely, I will take good care of it I will take good care of it So that it will be as beautiful as you) While I would certainly have made a garden if Eric had not decided to stay, it would not have been this garden. This garden embodies what we've decided to try to achieve together, and to me it's worth taking all the good care required.

On this episode of The Massimo Show Rod sits down with Dave DesRochers.   Dave is a former offensive lineman who was a 12th round pick in the 1987 draft and played in the Seattle Seahawks organization for a couple of years. After his football career, he got into acting and worked on various television shows, movies, and commercials. After moving on from acting he owned a financial investment firm for about 20 years. Today he is the Vice President of PATH2HappiSuccess which is a company that helps lead students to better college experiences and assists them in finding lifelong careers that will lead to their happiness.  Early Years In High school, Dave was a basketball player - tall and lanky.  He was good enough to make it to the final cut for the Olympic development team and get scholarship offers at small universities.  The football coach approached him in his junior year and asked if he was going to play.  “I said  ‘no, I am a basketball player and I have some scholarships.'” Dave recalls.  Despite Dave's protests the coach encouraged him to come and play football and promised him even better scholarship opportunities. Dave remembers telling the coach “I'm not very good. I like football, and I want to be, but I'm not.” The coach said he'd help him but 3 practices in he pulled Dave aside and said “you know you're not very good. You really need to work on your footwork”  and handed Dave a jump rope.  Despite his skepticism, Dave took the jump rope home and worked until he was proficient at it.  “The jump roping gave me confidence,” Dave tells Rod “and I did fairly well that year.” Dave was offered scholarships to CAL, U of A, Hawaii, Fullerton on a dual scholarship and the school he chose,  San Diego State.       Dave was taken on a scholarship with potential.  What he came to find out is potential is a nice way of telling somebody “you are not good”.  For Dave, it was the same thing with the NFL as well.  He was a 12th round draft pick - meaning he was decent and picked based on his potential.  Dave credits this mostly to the fact that, unlike many other players, he was in excellent condition. Furthermore, he did things to take care of himself and work hard that most big guys don't want to have to worry about.  What Dave learned is that if you do the little things other people aren't willing to do, you will succeed.  You will put yourself above everyone else in the room.  Life After Football In 1992 he stopped playing football and became a financial advisor. “My first year I made $5,000,” Dave tells Rod.  “The first thing my ex-wife asked was, ‘are you sure you should be doing this?'”  The entry-level for the job consisted of cold calling. Dave was handed a phone book and asked to call 25-30 people, speak to 10 and set 2 appointments a day for his advisor.  He would have to speak to complete strangers, get them to listen to him, and then get them to come into these appointments.  “Most people would dread that” Dave says “I dreaded it, but that was my job.”  He would call 100 people and set a goal of setting 5 appointments a day.  Dave always doubled what was expected of him and in 2 months, senior management was having him give presentations to all other junior representatives on how to cold call.  Within 4 months he was given his own branch, and in 3 ½ years, he was vice president of the bank.   “It was like the jump rope, I did something no one wanted to do. I took it and did more, better and quicker.  I put myself above everybody else which put me on the fast track to succeed.”  Pivoting, Before it was Cool  Four years ago, Dave was talking with his fiance's uncle about a program he came up with that would help students solve the problems surrounding changing their major, taking 6 years to graduate, and student loan debt.  He was writing his book: Career Happiness and Success: A Definitive Path to Determine Your Best Career. As he was researching college statistics he found 70% of college students change their major once, 33% change it twice or more.  He started looking at the career assessments and came up with a program that he thought would be a solution to this problem.  He asked Dave to take the program and tell him what he thought.  Dave did all parts of the assessment, it took him 3 days, but he realized that this was a program that could help so many more people.  Dave went to work with him on this project.     Dave's Description of the Program Our program starts with 2 general assessments, we have to know what you are going to love.  What that doesn't say if you will be good at what you love.  Being good at something is your aptitude. So we have an aptitude assessment.  This is where we begin.  We take what you are going to love and what you are good at along with general vocation categories.  We use the US dept of labor data of all careers.  We have you pull up specific careers in all categories.  As you look at them it will show you how much education you will need, how much money you can earn, and the job growth rate.       Listen in to hear Rod and Dave talk about what equates to talent, potential, and the path to happiness.

Lindsey was born and raised in Vermont. She worked in the field of early childhood education for over 17 years. During that time she worked as an Afterschool Teacher, Teaching Assistant, Lead Classroom Teacher, and spent her final three years in education as the Head of School at a progressive and holistic education school in Williston, Vermont. Lindsey left the field of education in the fall of 2020 to pursue a career in the holistic wellness field. Currently she is taking time to rest and decompress while exploring and developing new skills to work towards building a holistic wellness practice. Lindsey enjoys all things outdoors including hiking, gardening, and backcountry skiing.   We talked to Lindsey about her experience with holistic and progressive education, from her post-college job as an after-school teacher at the Bellwether School in Williston to eventually becoming Head of School at Bellwether, post-Goddard. Lindsey quickly fell in love with holistic and progressive education when she started at Bellwether, “Holistic education…[focuses] on all different aspects of child's experience…Everything is interconnected, you can't reference any one part of a system without referencing the whole.”   When she decided that she wanted to get a teaching license, Lindsey turned to Goddard, which had trained some of the teachers she looked up to. Lindsey describes her feeling as she came to Goddard: “Mind blowing. Synchronicity. Meta. Goddard is the first place where I experienced community, where I felt like I had a role in the community.” Lindsey was thrilled to be experiencing the same kind of education that she hoped to bring out into the world.   Lindsey is currently developing a practice in holistic wellness and hopes to open up a wellness center that is accessible to anyone who wants it, and/or take the practices into schools. As she navigates her current transition, she has said, “Goddard set me on a path of self-discovery that I don't see any end to.”   Recommendations: Ron Miller, founder of Bellwether School and author of numerous books on holistic education.
