fWotD Episode 2994: Trinity (nuclear test) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 16 July 2025, is Trinity (nuclear test).Trinity was the first detonation of a nuclear weapon, conducted by the United States Army at 5:29 a.m. MWT (11:29:21 GMT) on July 16, 1945, as part of the Manhattan Project. The test was of an implosion-design plutonium bomb, or "gadget", of the same design as the Fat Man bomb later detonated over Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945. Concerns about whether the complex Fat Man design would work led to a decision to conduct the first nuclear test. The code name "Trinity" was assigned by J. Robert Oppenheimer, the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, possibly inspired by the poetry of John Donne. The test, both planned and directed by Kenneth Bainbridge, was conducted in the Jornada del Muerto desert about 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, on what was the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range (renamed the White Sands Proving Ground just before the test). The only structures originally in the immediate vicinity were the McDonald Ranch House and its ancillary buildings, which scientists used as a laboratory for testing bomb components. Fears of a fizzle prompted construction of "Jumbo", a steel containment vessel that could contain the plutonium, allowing it to be recovered; but ultimately Jumbo was not used in the test. On May 7, 1945, a rehearsal was conducted, during which 108 short tons (98 t) of high explosive spiked with radioactive isotopes was detonated. Some 425 people were present on the weekend of the Trinity test. In addition to Bainbridge and Oppenheimer, observers included Vannevar Bush, James Chadwick, James B. Conant, Thomas Farrell, Enrico Fermi, Hans Bethe, Richard Feynman, Isidor Isaac Rabi, Leslie Groves, Frank Oppenheimer, Geoffrey Taylor, Richard Tolman, Edward Teller, and John von Neumann. The Trinity bomb released the explosive energy of 25 kilotons of TNT (100 TJ) ± 2 kilotons of TNT (8.4 TJ), and a large cloud of fallout. Thousands of people lived closer to the test than would have been allowed under guidelines adopted for subsequent tests, but no one living near the test was evacuated before or afterward. The test site was declared a National Historic Landmark district in 1965 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places the following year. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:34 UTC on Wednesday, 16 July 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Trinity (nuclear test) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Ruth.

(In 2021 begonnen in Frankrijk.) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Yup — South Africa’s in a bit of a pickle (literally), and it's got everything to do with vinegar. Between fuel hikes, port delays, packaging problems, and soaring prices for basics like sugar and grain — our vinegar supply is running low. That means your sauces, your chakalaka, your pickles, even your cleaning spray could feel the pinch. But don’t panic just yet! We’re chatting to Louis Opperman, Head of Commercial at Jumbo, who’s here to break it all down — and more importantly, explain how Jumbo Brands is keeping their vinegar flowing. While others scramble, they’ve got stock, a solid national network, and they're keeping kitchens and factories running smoothly. So before you cancel that braai marinade or panic-buy your cleaning vinegar — tune in. Because not all heroes wear capes... some just bring the vinegar.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jumbo is the first full-time Shark to make the Hall, and the Dudes celebrate him and his career. The Sharks have the #2 overall pick in the upcoming draft, and the Dudes trade ideas as to what might happen. The post DOH 500 – Jumbo HOF and 2025 Draft first appeared on Dudes On Hockey.
Dustin Reid, chief strategist for fixed income at Mackenzie Investments, says he expects the Federal Reserve to hold off on rate cuts in July, but to be moved into making a double cut — half a percent — in September, and worries that the central bank may be waiting too long to act, as the labor market is starting to show some cracks. Reid said a bigger cut might be taken as a positive by the market if inflation hasn't spiked, labor markets are slow but steady and the action suggests that the Fed is trying to stay ahead of the action. That action and uncertainty has Reid favoring intermediate bonds now, with two- to five-year maturities. John Kosar, chief market strategist at Asbury Research, says he is risk-on right now, being fully invested and continuing to ride the wave that started churning after the stock market bottomed out in April. Kosar acknowledges that the market's rebound has been fast and big, and so he's expecting a reversion to the mean that would push him to a risk-off position, ahead of what he considers a foreseeable market tumble. Plus, in The NAVigator segment, Mike Schueller — co-manager of the Allspring Income Opportunities fund — says he foresees a "muddle-through economy," which is actually a good environment for high-yield bonds, which face little default risk at a point where recession has "receded into the background."

Here are the three big things to know this hour— Number One— President Trump has announced a meeting at 8am this morning to outline what he says will be irrefutable evidence of the success of our strike on Iran— Number Two— US Envoy Steve Witkoff says the Abraham accords are about to have several more countries sign on to further the peace movement in the Middle East—including some big surprises he says— Number Three— Almost 24 years ago, New York City lost thousands of Americans when Muslim terrorists destroyed the twin towers in a brazen attack using Jumbo jets– radicalized by a religion that considers Americans and Christians, especially, as infidels – or simply put – their enemies—
Like a lot of you, I was moved by the passing of film director David Lynch this past January. Much more than I thought I would be, to be honest. A lot of it had to do with the timing. He was such a part of Los Angeles. He made movies set here. He did a daily weather report. He talked at length about how much he loved the light, the feeling of Old Hollywood, the smell of night-blooming jasmine, and he left as the city was on literally burning down around us. On top of that, we were four days away from a new president who is the embodiment of everything Lynch is not. It was like Dale Cooper died four days before Bob become President. Everywhere you turned on the news there was another scumbag asshole winning the lottery, and just when things could not get worse, reality said, “Wait! I got one more!” While struggling to fight the fires, with thousands of people in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena losing everything the city was now mourning its coolest resident. And if you don't live here I really cannot understate what a presence he is. There is a rotating sculpture of his head in head in Santa Monica. People gathered at the Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake where he used to go for coffee and a chocolate shake every day at 2:00 PM. The gathered at Jumbo's Clown Room, the Hollywood Boulevard strip club where he, as legend has it, he wrote Blue Velvet. Every sidewalk sandwich board in town bore a chalk drawing of his iconic quiff. So, as I began the next podcast, I figured I would dedicate the True Tales From Weirdsville segment to Mr. Lynch. But it quickly became apparent that it was way too much story for just one segment and it eventually stretched over three episodes. And so, for your listening pleasure, we stitched ‘em together, and here they are. Enjoy. https://www.
