Este episodio NO es traído a ustedes por Tubi... PERO DEBERÍA (Call us, Tubi!). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/desmenuzando/support
The slasher sub-genre was revitalized in 1996 with Wes Craven's “Scream,” ushering in a whole new era of self-aware slasher films steeped in irony. By the early 2000s though, the genre was on life support yet again. Today, we're taking a look back at some of the last of the WB-approved era of slasher films with two campy horror flicks that come so, so close to satirizing the genre as “Scream” did in the late 90s. First up, it's the return of podcast MVP Brittany Murphy in the 2000 cult favorite “Cherry Falls,” wherein the virginal teenagers in a tight-knit community are being preyed upon by a serial killer. After that, we're jumping to 2001 for the holiday themed revenge thriller “Valentine,” starring another podcast favorite, Denise Richards, as well as the first podcast appearance by our beloved “Angel” himself: David Boreanaz. Film critic, writer, and co-host of the Bad Romance Podcast, Jourdain Searles, joins us to discuss the compromised production of “Cherry Falls,” the legacy of Brittany Murphy, David Boreanaz's brief film career, and how Jay Mohr was ever a thing. “Cherry Falls” and “Valentine” are both available to rent or buy through Shout! Factory, while “Valentine” is also streaming on Tubi!

Repeat after Kathleen: Don't. open. the door. EVER. Lock your doors and throw distrustful glances at your mother because Kathleen's teaching you how to protect your home from robbers, thieves, and all types of ne'er-do-wells! These are seriously useful tips and tricks that you can implement right away. Then, Bethany is giving her (non-exhaustive, incomplete) list of movies you need to be watching during Spooky Season, besides the typical Halloween classics. As Ted Lasso would say, this episode is a real "Hi, Lowe" because NBC's Rebecca Lowe joins JSB to chat through all things soccer. Rebecca reflects on her illustrious career and how it's a surprise for her to end up in America, then puts it all the line with a cheeky game of "Promote or Relegate". Dragon on the Couch: The Dragon discusses the docuseries LulaRich (Prime), which is about LulaRoe, the MLM/pyramid scheme everyone remembers from Facebook a few years ago and she highly recommends. She also watched 2018's Halloween (Fubo or rent), which is the sequel starring Jamie Lee Curtis that she also really loved. Caroline's TLC Corner: Caroline stayed in the TLC/Discovery+ reality tv realm and watched 90 Day Fiancé, which she loves, and a spin-off show focusing on one couple called The Family Chantel, which she also highly recommends if you are into that kind of thing. Lastly, she recommends the show I Love a Mama's Boy, that she likes to use as a teaching moment for Berto. Berto on the Bed: Berto and Caroline watched the Hell House LLC sequels (Tubi, Shudder) and both agreed they do NOT live up to the original, and REC (Fubo), which they both really liked. Solo, he watched the Rob Zombie movie Lords of Salem (Prime), which is just bad. He also saw John Carpenter's The Fog (Prime), which he felt had some good elements but the beginning was rough, and the Dragon agrees. Finally, he saw Hell Baby on Tubi - his new place to find c-grade horror - which is a comedy with horror elements that he said was a fun 100 minutes. This week's deep dive is the 2011 found footage horror movie Grave Encounters, currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
He's the host of the Behind the Mask podcast but you probably know him best as one-man wrecking crew in the NFL for several seasons, Takeo Spikes opens a bottle of red with Julie this week. In this occult, convoluted episode of Tubi or Not Tubi, we descent into a world of darkness in the 2020 film, Conjuring: Book of the Dead, written and directed by Richard Driscoll. Tubi is a safe haven for cult movies. No, I don't mean the genre of the cult film. I'm talking about New York comic book publishing company executives who own an interconnected ring of occultist strip clubs in New Orleans. Indeed, there's lots to not understand here!
Paul Giamatti. What else needs to be said? We plunge into Cold Souls, the 2009 film from Sophie Barthes where Mr. Giamatti plays a fictionalized version of himself. Stressing over his role in a Broadway play, Paul decides to have his soul put in storage so he can remove the burden of his anxiety. Sounds a bit off, but it is brilliant. Giamatti is fantastic, as always. We talk about the comedy that turns to some through-provoking drama at the end. A fantastic work by all involved with amazing lessons on, well, everything. Cold Souls can be found on Tubi.
The hosts of the Rank and Vile podcast, Ryan Boyd and Quincy Rhoads, join us for the show this week to talk about spooky (not scary) movies for Chris to watch, Scaredy Cats, the mysteries of Tubi, what exactly constitutes a horror movie, and a whole lot more! Plus, Matt and Chris judge a very intriguing Great Indoor Fight battle!

If you think having a law degree limits your creativity you haven't met Katherin Hervey. Katherin has worked as a magazine editor, a public defender, a film enthusiast, a holistic artist, a director, and filmmaker. After studying cross-cultural communications, which was a self-designed major at the University of Washington, Katherin found that curating her own degree was her way of diving into her interests. Katherin was able to take women's studies courses, ethnicity, psychology and sociology courses which motivated Katherin to pick up a camera.Katherin Hervey attended law school at Loyola- Los Angeles and later became a public defender. Katherin found the tradition, patriarchy, and hierarchical processes of law school to be stifling, and Katherin rebelled against most of what she saw in law school. Law school inspired Katherin to wonder about the people behind the case law and find her own way to tell stories of others. Katherin's interest in the background stories combined with her experiences as a public defender in California, motivated Katherin to go behind the prison walls to share the stories of men on death row. Katherin wants you to know that the stories of the men behind the walls could be you, these men could be your brothers, uncles, nephews. Katherin used language and terminology learned from being a public defender while appealing to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to gain access to the men inside. Katherin's mission in filming ‘The Prison Within' is to show the empathy of the men behind the walls; show the work that these men are completing and showing their humanity. Every person is on a parallel journey to heal and these men are not unlike the lives of those who live on the outside of the walls.Although Katherin believes that she would have taken a creative path regardless of attending law school, Katherin Hervey knows that she would not have created a project like ‘The Prison Within' had she never attended law school. Learn more about ‘The Prison Within' at theprisonwithin.org, and watch the film ‘The Prison Within' on Tubi, Amazon Prime, iTunes, and Google Play.Katherin Hervey is licensed in California. Hearkening from the early 90s, Arcade gives us the very worst of genre exploitation. More frustrating than frightening, Arcade takes us into a possessed virtual reality game that feeds off of the souls of young players. Another crystal clear example of Jim's mantra; Know what you are writing about, or don't write it at all. The technical references are laughable. One of the only saving graces is that a very young, baby-like Seth Green is in it. There is so much wrong with this movie there is not enough time in the day to cover all of it. Arcade can be found on Tubi.

In this wayfaring, soul-searching episode of Tubi or Not Tubi, we traverse the spiral woods of Scotland in the 2012 film, Temple Wood: A Quest for Freedom, directed by Ethan Race. The Lovecraftian Horror genre has inspired many a creator, and Tubi is far from immune from this realm of influence. That said, one must wonder, is the Lovecraft Realm of this app something Tubi admired? Or is it something Tubi avoided?

On this special episode, we welcome Raj Maitra to the podcast to talk about the niche albeit electric sport known as Ultimate Frisbee. Raj has played Ultimate at a professional level (even appearing on ESPN) and now coaches a local team in Minneapolis. He is also an old, close friend of Paul's from a summer they both spent studying abroad in Cambridge (carousing about the hallowed halls of Cambridge a la the young blokes in Chariot's of Fire). The documentary under discussion is Flatball. Narrated by Alec Baldwin and chronicling the history and rise of the esoteric sport of Ultimate Frisbee, the documentary is easily accessible streaming on Tubi. Please check it out. It is well-made, fascinating, and, best of all, free! That said, Flatball really serves as a launching pad to dive deep into stories and anecdotes about Raj's experiences playing Ultimate Frisbee and the ins-and-outs of this exciting, underdog sport. We bombard Raj with questions about the technicalities, economics, history, and politics of the game, and he graciously offers in-depth answers. For anyone seeking a truly in-depth breakdown of everything you need to know about Ultimate Frisbee, this is the podcast episode for you!
A sci-fi horror thriller, The Mind's Eye is a solid work on all levels. We dive into this salute to the old 80's film Scanners set in the 90s and follow Zack and Rachael make their way through twisted experiments, an over the top villain, and a bevy of psychokinetic battles that do not disappoint. We talk about the importance of allocating your budget, getting actors involved in their parts rather than just playing one, top-notch effects, and why a cheesy villain is almost always the right move. The Mind's Eye can be found on Tubi.
