It's a conscious rebellion in a cup.“When doctors don't listen and politicians profit, quality wellness becomes a form of rebellion.”But this episode goes far deeper than products. It explores the quiet power of doing the right thing when no one is watching, the ancient wisdom of Swedish fika, and how Trident and ALLSMITH aligned through shared values: integrity, community, and legacy.⸻⏱️ Time Stamps & Key Segments00:00 – 05:30 | From Service to SovereigntyEric shares his transition from military service to the business world, confronting the harsh truth that the institutions we trust—especially in healthcare—aren't always built to serve us.“You don't need a politician to tell you what's healthy. This is the raw truth most won't say aloud—and why Trident had to be built from scratch.“We're battling lobbyists in Congress one cup at a time.”35:31 – 45:00 | Business, Leadership, and the Long GameLegacy isn't built on launch days—it's built in the unseen hours. Eric and Bryce explore what it means to lead with values, love your people, and make decisions rooted in what's right, not what's trending.“Doing the right thing when no one is watching is where legacy is built.”⸻

How Swedish Traditions Inspire Timeless Architecture with Johan Sundberg

Architect My Life

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 16, 2025 61:52

What can architects learn from a Swedish coffee break? Turns out, quite a lot. In this episode, we explore how cultural rituals, minimalist values, and thoughtful leadership can shape not only great design, but also a resilient and balanced architecture practice. I sit down with Johan Sundberg, founder of Johan Sundberg Arkitektur, to explore what it takes to build a thoughtful, sustainable architecture practice. From his early days as a student to leading one of Sweden's most respected residential architecture firms, Johan shares how culture, design, and business intersect in his work. We talk about how Fika, the Swedish tradition of taking intentional breaks, shapes the studio culture and creates space for connection. Johan shares how he approaches every project as a balance of interior design, landscape, and architecture, with a strong emphasis on minimalism and livability. We also discuss how AI is impacting the profession, why strong client relationships matter more than ever, and the kind of mindset young architects need to thrive in today's industry. Whether you're running your own practice or still finding your place in the field, this conversation is full of insights you won't want to miss. Key Takeaways: Building a sustainable architecture firm takes clarity, creativity, and consistency. Fika is more than a coffee break — it's a cultural practice that encourages team bonding and mental resets. Successful projects balance interiors, landscape design, and the home as one unified experience. The Ingso House reflects Swedish minimalism and thoughtful residential design. Interior and landscape design are not add-ons — they're integral to creating livable homes. The viral Laudan Shed shows how even small structures can make a big architectural impact. Strong client relationships drive long-term firm success. Leading a firm means constantly navigating expectations and evolving workflows. Prioritizing work-life balance is key to avoiding burnout. AI has potential in architecture, but its effectiveness depends on how it's integrated.   About the Guest: Johan Sundberg's architectural work started in Lund almost 20 years ago. He grew up interested in art, architecture, and graphic design. At 19, he found his way to architecture, a suitable mix of art and technology. Johan studied architecture at Lund University and had a breakthrough with his first significant house, Villa Bergman-Werntoft, designed during his final year at school and built in Ljunghusen in southern Sweden.  After this first success, Johan received commissions for several more houses. The office can now showcase an impressive portfolio, with most homes in Skåne and southern Sweden built close to nature and driven by a distinct architectural language. The office has also designed apartments and office environments and created Andrum, a peaceful, elegant spa facility in the town of Höör. The office's approach always starts from the experience; “We work from a total effect of the architectural tools, an emotional response, not an artificial order,” says Johan. “It's about human needs and atmospheres.” Check out his website: www.johansundberg.com/Instagram: @johansundbergarkitektur

Scandi lifestyle trends have been all the rage for a number of years now. Regular listeners may remember we've talked about Hygge and lagom on the show in the past. Well here's another one from Sweden. Fika is basically a short break with friends, family or colleagues sharing a moment together while enjoying a hot beverage. On the face of it, the concept might sound pretty mundane, but it's a real ritual which people across Sweden will tell you they can't go without! According to Visit Sweden, it's believed to come from the old spelling for coffee in Swedish, which was kaffi. Reverse the syllables of kaffi and you get fika. What does the word fika actually mean? Isn't it just a fancy coffee break? What's the best food option to go with fika? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Jeannette is a Corpus raised, Le Cordon Bleu trained, deeply experienced chef. Her primary expertise is pastry, and she created the menu for Central Kitchen. She is now starting her own adventure, Fika, an experience where one can relax with a pastry and espresso. “Fika” is a Swedish term that describes taking a break with friends, old and new. On this episode, we discuss Jeannette's journey away from and back to Corpus Christi with anecdotes from impressive stops along the way. We learn about how she impressed her French professor at UT with macaroons crafted in her dorm's basement kitchen, her delight in being called “chef” by her mentor at Southerleigh, and her passion for building a business around her family. Maintaining our balance whether we are holding a tree pose in yoga or riding a bicycle requires dynamic engagement. While the tree pose in yoga may look static, nope, it is actually dynamic as various muscles are engaged. Similarly and more visually obvious is riding a bicycle. We must remain in motion, and a motion that is balanced, so again engaging our motions to align with each other if there are multiple, in this case our two legs pedaling, to remain balanced. Balance in life involves a similar concept. We may not always look physically in motion, so for example, choosing time to just be, but we are engaged. We are present and consciously and purposefully engaging in an action or activity that nourishes our balance. In the first episode of the new year, I wanted to focus on this idea of balanced living as inspired by the book The Scandinavian Guide to Happiness: Balanced Living with Fika, Lagos, Hygge, and More by Tim Rayburn, because rather than focusing on adding or improving, why not focus on tweaking and putting more of a priority on savoring. The latter is what will improve the quality of our life in all arenas. So let's take a look at the list, and be sure to listen to the audio version for detailed conversation about each point.   Explore the Show Notes here on The Simply Luxurious Life blog - https://thesimplyluxuriouslife.com/podcast395

This week we're heading to Chicago to spend some time with Suzanne Karr Schmidt (PhD Yale) at The Newberry Library. Suzanne is their Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts, she also researches for and creates exhibits, and helps lost books find their way back home. So, if you need a break from the holiday busyness curl up with a steaming mug, close your eyes and imagine a magical world where curiosity can be both inspired and sated, there is a portal that reaches back 5,000 years and contemplates the future, and most importantly has 27.5 miles of bookshelves. Fika will take you there, on this 100th episode. About the Newberry Library - Our collections, programs, and exhibitions are a portal to more than six centuries of human history, from the 15th century to the present. The Newberry welcomes anyone who is eager to learn about who we are, where we came from, and where we are going. Our community of learning includes historians, genealogists, visual and performing artists, writers, graphic designers, teachers, students, and many, many others. A Brief History of the Newberry Walter L. Newberry, a businessman and civic leader in Chicago who died in 1868, left a provision in his will calling for the creation of a “free public library.” Newberry was light on details. He couldn't predict how the library might best serve Chicago by the time it opened. As a result, Newberry staff shaped the institution around the needs of the city. To complement the Chicago Public Library, which had been established in 1872, the trustees decided to found a non-circulating reference library that would be free and open to the public. Before the Newberry opened in 1887, it had no collection to offer visitors. Walter Newberry's own book collection, which might have served as a foundation for the library, had been destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. And so the Newberry's first librarians grew the library's collection from the ground up. Today, the Newberry collection extends across 27.5 miles of shelving in the library stacks. And it's still growing. We acquire and preserve materials that represent a range of perspectives and experiences—including those that historically have been marginalized, misrepresented, or silenced. Learn more about the Newberry at - www.newberry.org About Suzanne Karr Schmidt PhD: Suzanne Karr Schmidt (PhD Yale) is the Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts at Chicago's Newberry Library, where she adds books to the collection and curated exhibitions. Ella EngstromTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Ella Engstrom. Ella is an interior designer and organizational coach. Ella is also one of the three "fixers" on the television show The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning (Peacock / Bravo). In this episode, Ella tells me about growing up in Sweden, and working for 30 years as a Concept Developer and a Visual Merchandiser in the retail enviornment in Sweden. I ask her a ton of 'Dumb American' questions about Sweden and about visual merchandising. Next we get into how she came to be part of the television show, and how she gets along with the other two hosts, now that the show is between seasons. Ella explains 'fika' to me and a few other uniquely Swedish words and concepts. We talk about the taboo nature of talking about death in The U.S and in Sweden, and then I get super personal in my questions to her! Ella explains why she has a second home ont eh Mediteranian coast, and i pepper her with questions about how often she declutters and organizes her own home. Naturally we talk about the famous Delecarlian Horse and why it is known worldwide. Finally, we talk about what she learned during the show, and whether or not there will be another season. Ella does consultant wiork privately for organization and home logistics via her very own company; listen to find out how to contact her directly for help, no matter where you live!
