SEQUENCES No270 A brief update on the latest new names for this month's first edition. On the modular front, Anders Jakobsen aims to create a balance between noisy and harmonious sounds. We are in a live session with Danielle Nia. Thierry Holwerk is using a Serge Modular Synth, paired with field samples recorded from his source of inspiration. Mansur's sound journey navigates the realms of musical fantasy and reality, merging traditional instrumentation with contemporary electronica. Nettaiya is a groundbreaking New Age music project that fuses Eastern and Western influences into an ethereal sonic experience. Influences from Kraut Rock emerge on the track ‘Trippin With The Birds', with Stereo Lab and Nurse With Wound contributing to this fusion. After switching labels to Groove, Otarion's latest album release is undoubtedly his best yet, kicking off our session.

Scandi lifestyle trends have been all the rage for a number of years now. Regular listeners may remember we've talked about Hygge and lagom on the show in the past. Well here's another one from Sweden. Fika is basically a short break with friends, family or colleagues sharing a moment together while enjoying a hot beverage. On the face of it, the concept might sound pretty mundane, but it's a real ritual which people across Sweden will tell you they can't go without! According to Visit Sweden, it's believed to come from the old spelling for coffee in Swedish, which was kaffi. Reverse the syllables of kaffi and you get fika. What does the word fika actually mean? Isn't it just a fancy coffee break? What's the best food option to go with fika? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!

I'm your host Rob George, and our guest is Jeannette Del Angel, and if you ordered from Sucre during Covid (or since), or eaten at Central Kitchen, you've likely experienced her magic in the oven. Jeannette is a Corpus raised, Le Cordon Bleu trained, deeply experienced chef. Her primary expertise is pastry, and she created the menu for Central Kitchen. She is now starting her own adventure, Fika, an experience where one can relax with a pastry and espresso. “Fika” is a Swedish term that describes taking a break with friends, old and new. On this episode, we discuss Jeannette's journey away from and back to Corpus Christi with anecdotes from impressive stops along the way. We learn about how she impressed her French professor at UT with macaroons crafted in her dorm's basement kitchen, her delight in being called “chef” by her mentor at Southerleigh, and her passion for building a business around her family. Jeannette and Fika offer a unique vibe to the Coastal Bend—a Swedish twist on relaxing with friends. Please follow Fika on Instagram at @fika_microbakery and be sure to seize a moment for your own Fika at Jeannette's bakery on Alameda between the Quad Fitness Studio and Lavender & Lee.    If you want more of what's now, and what's next, in business and entertainment in Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend, subscribe to the HECHO newsletter at hecho.cc and follow us @hechocorpus on Instagram.    Thank you Jeannette for coming on the show. Maintaining our balance whether we are holding a tree pose in yoga or riding a bicycle requires dynamic engagement. While the tree pose in yoga may look static, nope, it is actually dynamic as various muscles are engaged. Similarly and more visually obvious is riding a bicycle. We must remain in motion, and a motion that is balanced, so again engaging our motions to align with each other if there are multiple, in this case our two legs pedaling, to remain balanced. Balance in life involves a similar concept. We may not always look physically in motion, so for example, choosing time to just be, but we are engaged. We are present and consciously and purposefully engaging in an action or activity that nourishes our balance. In the first episode of the new year, I wanted to focus on this idea of balanced living as inspired by the book The Scandinavian Guide to Happiness: Balanced Living with Fika, Lagos, Hygge, and More by Tim Rayburn, because rather than focusing on adding or improving, why not focus on tweaking and putting more of a priority on savoring. The latter is what will improve the quality of our life in all arenas. So let's take a look at the list, and be sure to listen to the audio version for detailed conversation about each point.   Explore the Show Notes here on The Simply Luxurious Life blog - https://thesimplyluxuriouslife.com/podcast395

We're approaching the longest night of the year, which is the perfect opportunity to light a candle, wrap up in your favourite comforter, and embrace the tradition of Christmas Ghost Stories. Thea Prothero, author of “A Guide to Pilgrimage,” will be rejoining us for a conversation on the tradition itself, authors that are well known for their Ghost Stories, and then read part of one of her own. Please join us in celebrating the Holiday “Spirits,” I think I may enjoy some gingerbread tea for this special conversation, but coffee with a dash of eggnog may do the trick as well. About Thea - Thea Prothero is primarily a Nemophilist* and a Heathen. Her passion is walking in the wildest remotest lands, places that still make the gods tremble, and she loves the challenge of finding connection through nature to the gods. She also enjoys writing ghost stories, reading, taking photos, tending to her allotment, and spending time with her family. She works in education and lives in the south of the UK. · * Literally a “haunter of woods” someone who loves to spend time in woods and forests. Find Thea at - https://heathenpilgrim.substack.com/ About A Guide to Pilgrimage - Pilgrimage is one of the oldest forms of sacred journeying. But how does it fit into the 21st century and, more importantly, how is it relevant to our tech-heavy super-busy lives? This book is a blueprint for understanding how going on a pilgrimage will spiritually fulfill and, ultimately, transform you. Discover how this ancient practice can be traced through history and how it still plays a significant role in the many paths of faith today. Here, you'll find stories of modern pilgrimage, words of wisdom from literature, meditations, and tools to inspire you towards taking your first physical steps on your journey. This week we're heading to Chicago to spend some time with Suzanne Karr Schmidt (PhD Yale) at The Newberry Library. Suzanne is their Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts, she also researches for and creates exhibits, and helps lost books find their way back home. So, if you need a break from the holiday busyness curl up with a steaming mug, close your eyes and imagine a magical world where curiosity can be both inspired and sated, there is a portal that reaches back 5,000 years and contemplates the future, and most importantly has 27.5 miles of bookshelves. Fika will take you there, on this 100th episode. About the Newberry Library - Our collections, programs, and exhibitions are a portal to more than six centuries of human history, from the 15th century to the present. The Newberry welcomes anyone who is eager to learn about who we are, where we came from, and where we are going. Our community of learning includes historians, genealogists, visual and performing artists, writers, graphic designers, teachers, students, and many, many others. A Brief History of the Newberry Walter L. Newberry, a businessman and civic leader in Chicago who died in 1868, left a provision in his will calling for the creation of a “free public library.” Newberry was light on details. He couldn't predict how the library might best serve Chicago by the time it opened. As a result, Newberry staff shaped the institution around the needs of the city. To complement the Chicago Public Library, which had been established in 1872, the trustees decided to found a non-circulating reference library that would be free and open to the public. Before the Newberry opened in 1887, it had no collection to offer visitors. Walter Newberry's own book collection, which might have served as a foundation for the library, had been destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. And so the Newberry's first librarians grew the library's collection from the ground up. Today, the Newberry collection extends across 27.5 miles of shelving in the library stacks. And it's still growing. We acquire and preserve materials that represent a range of perspectives and experiences—including those that historically have been marginalized, misrepresented, or silenced. Learn more about the Newberry at - www.newberry.org About Suzanne Karr Schmidt PhD: Suzanne Karr Schmidt (PhD Yale) is the Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts at Chicago's Newberry Library, where she adds books to the collection and curated exhibitions. Mark is also a horror movie fanatic- having been the “occult adviser” on at least one indie horror film- and enjoys cemetery walks/picnics, talking to the dead, listening to music, cooking/baking, and drinking wine or homemade absinthe at the witching hour while musing on magick or reading something dark and fun (and why is that often Poe). This week, Fika with Vicky asks the question…an isolated island and an old cottage…what could go wrong? I can't tell you that, because of spoilers, but I can tell you what could go right. Jeff (J.C.) Vande Zande. An Author, Poet, Screenwriter and Filmmaker, Jeff has an eclectic and engaging collection of work. In this episode, we'll be focusing on his first Horror novel, “The Dance of Rotten Sticks,” There's a lot to embrace in this work, but I especially found the dialogue within family relationships authentic. And of course, when there are children involved, it makes everything much more intense. I want to say this would be a great book to take on vacation and read by the side of a lake for the atmosphere, but on the other hand, it may send you back to the mainland sooner than you planned. Safety first! Please join us, as we look into this new campfire tale offering, “The Dance of Rotten Sticks.” It's a wonderfully worthy addition to this fine tradition, and hopefully has sparked more such stories from Jeff Vande Sande. About The Dance of Rotten Sticks:- The Dance of Rotten Sticks tells the story of Isaac Fletcher, a recent widower struggling to raise three kids after losing his wife to a bizarre car accident. His mother-in-law, aware of Isaac's drinking problem, threatens to take the kids. Hoping to become the father they need him to be, Isaac takes the family to their recently-purchased vacation property on Orphan Island. Strange incidents occur, culminating in their discovery of an abandoned orphanage that some say is haunted. Isaac's youngest begins to hear voices. His eldest has horrific dreams of their dead mother. Only Emily seems to thrive, beguiling Isaac to the true danger that she faces from the island's other inhabitants. About Jeff- Jeff Vande Zande teaches fiction writing, screenwriting, and film production at Delta College in Michigan. His award-winning short films have been accepted over 200 times in national and international film festivals. His books of fiction include the story collections Emergency Stopping (Bottom Dog Press) and Threatened Species (Whistling Shade Press). His novels include Into the Desperate Country (March Street Press), Landscape with Fragmented Figures (Bottom Dog Press), American Poet (Bottom Dog Press) and Detroit Muscle (Whistling Shade Press). In 2012, American Poet won a Michigan Notable Book Award from the Library of Michigan. In 2020, Whistling Shade Press released his collection, The Neighborhood Division: Stories, and in 2022 Montag Press released his novel, Rules of Order. The Dance of Rotten Sticks (Montag Press, 2024) is his first foray into the horror genre. He maintains a blog at www.authorjeffvandezande.blogspot.com.

This week Fika with Vicky is welcoming Author Janice Barrett back, and there's a lot to talk about. You'll remember Janice visited with her first novel Authorized Cruelty last September, and I was blown away by it. Once again, with Cash for Life, I found myself looking for something to hold on to. My stomach churned while the plot sped, suddenly took corners, and picked up even more momentum as the ending grew closer. What does justice mean to you? Is there one justice for the mean streets…another for the picture perfect suburbs? And where does love, loyalty, and gratitude fit in? About Cash for Life - Lies and guarded secrets dominate Jackie's life, from age eleven, when Gino rescues her from an orphanage. Mother had warned her that Gino was a hoodlum. Jackie learns that everything has a price. He needs her home and she needs him. Gino, a likable drug dealer, teaches her, “Blood ain't about DNA, it's about sharin' a life.” When Jackie is an adult, Gino marries Paula, a coke-snorting opportunist. Motivated by greed, Paula kills Gino and claims it is self-defence. It's a lie. Raised on street justice, Jackie knows Paula must pay. Vengeance is what Gino expects and deserves. Manipulation, deceit, and fraud twist the ugly truth into a tragic reality as both women bait the police knowing one of them will be sent to prison. About Janice Barret - Janice is a proud mother of three. She worked at the Unemployment Insurance Office in Hamilton from 1973-1988 at which time she became a stay-at-home mom. She was a freelance journalist for The Weekend Focus and The Grimsby Independent newspaper where she was given her own column. An article she wrote for The Ottawa Citizen garnered attention from the producer of W5 who invited her to be a guest on their show, which she declined. She was the opening act for Coast to Coast Canada's Tenacious Literary Series held at The Laura Secord Homestead. She gave a seminar on How to Write a Memoir at The Niagara Falls Literary Festival. The first play she wrote, Dearly Departed, won a playwright contest where she was paid and a snippet of her play was performed at The Essential Collective Theatre. That afforded her an interview at The Tarragon Theatre. Her first historical fiction, Authorized Cruelty was published on October/1st/2023.
