Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 11 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by fellow AwardsWatch contributor Zach Laws as they discuss the next film in their Denis Villeneuve series, Arrival (2016). Following the critical and commercial success of Sicario, Villeneuve returned a year later with his first stab into the sci-fi genre, making a film about a linguist who is tasked with the job of finding a way to communicate with extraterrestrials who have landed in twelve different spacecrafts around the Earth. But beyond the film, Villeneuve unexpectedly delivered a healing vessel for audiences who felt a sense of hopelessness with the results of the 2016 election. Lead by a career best performance from Amy Adams and the best work of Jóhann Jóhannsson career, Arrival is considered not just one of the best films of 2016, but one of the most important films of the last decades, and what many consider Villeneuve's finest work of his career. In this episode, Ryan, Jay and Zach talk about where they were when they saw it in 2016, Zach's star-studded screening story, why Amy Adam's was subbed for a Best Actress nomination, the morality of the film's ending, the fantastic supporting work from Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker and Michael Stuhlbarg, as well as one or two Tim Allen impressions. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h17m. The guys will be back next week to continue their Denis Villeneuve series with a look at Blade Runner 2049. You can rent Blade Runner 2049 via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental (no streaming options) in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Joey is off to College in this film from director Forest Whitaker (!) from a story by Jerry O'Connell (!!)Alas that's what's most interesting about this frankly boring movie that fails to create a character for Katie Holmes' Sam.The romance isn't interesting and the narrative seems stuck on repeat, plus there's some weird sexual chemistry between the President and First Daughter.Thankfully we'll always have "My Date with the President's Daughter" and that banging theme song!Wanna connect with the show? www.blanimepodcast.com In this episode of the podcast, Mike and Senae delve into a variety of intriguing topics. They kick things off by discussing famous actors and their interesting family connections. Forest Whitaker, hailing from Longview, Texas, has brothers who bear an uncanny resemblance to him. Jamie Foxx, another Texas native from Terrell, also gets a shoutout, along with other Texan celebrities such as Erykah Badu from Dallas. The conversation takes a turn towards the popular Naruto franchise, where Senae finds herself a bit confused about Shikamaru becoming the 8th Hokage in Boruto. Mike, seizing the opportunity for some friendly banter, decides to call their friend Ben, a die-hard Naruto fan, to antagonize him about the plot twist. The ensuing debate between Mike and Ben about different characters and storylines in Naruto adds an exciting dynamic to the episode. Next, Senae mentions hearing whispers about a potential new show or movie centered around the first Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball. However, Mike remains skeptical about its authenticity. The hosts then shift gears to discuss the impressive animation quality in the current episodes of Bleach. Mike takes the opportunity to recommend an anime called Zom 100, highlighting his voice actor friend Zeno's portrayal of a character in the series. Senae is curious about where she can watch it, and Mike reveals that it is available on both Crunchyroll and Netflix. Before wrapping up, the hosts touch upon the shows their kids enjoy watching, including Coco Melon. Mike jokingly remarks that going through the Coco Melon phase is a rite of passage for children. They also remind listeners to stay safe as COVID numbers continue to rise and emphasize the importance of wearing masks. As the episode draws to a close, Mike playfully teases about not wanting lockdowns to occur again since Senae resides in Houston part-time.

Taking Chances . . . Bitter Stories Neo-Noir - Walter Hill's Johnny Handsome A solo episode for your enjoyment. This week I recommend a classic Walter Hill film showcasing the violence, grittiness, and power of action and neo-noir cinema. Featuring an all-star cast including Forrest Whitaker, Ellen Barkin, Lance Henriksen, Elizabeth McGovern, Morgan Freeman (in a rare - questionably - villainous role), and a leading performance from a young and beautiful Mickey Rourke. Darkness overwhelms this film and is a magical reminder of Hill at his artistic peak. Take a listen and let us know what you think. "Species" is a science fiction horror film released in 1995. The film was directed by Roger Donaldson and produced by Frank Mancuso Jr. The concept for the movie was originally conceived by Dennis Feldman, who also wrote the screenplay. The production was a collaborative effort between MGM and the American Film Marketing Association (AFMA). The story revolves around the discovery of an extraterrestrial DNA sequence received from outer space. A group of scientists, led by Xavier Fitch (played by Ben Kingsley), use this alien DNA to create a genetically engineered human-alien hybrid, named Sil (portrayed by Natasha Henstridge). Sil grows rapidly and exhibits dangerous predatory behaviors as she escapes from the research facility and sets out to procreate and fulfill her deadly instinct to survive. The casting process was crucial to bring the story's characters to life, and "Species" features a talented ensemble cast, including Michael Madsen, Alfred Molina, Forest Whitaker, Marg Helgenberger, and Michelle Williams. "Species" was made with a production budget of around $35 million, and it aimed to blend elements of science fiction, horror, and thriller genres. The film's special effects, especially in creating Sil's alien-human transformation, were considered groundbreaking for its time. Upon its release in 1995, "Species" garnered significant attention for its mix of horror and sci-fi elements, becoming a commercial success with a worldwide box office gross of over $113 million. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film found a dedicated fan base and spawned several sequels, making it a notable entry in the sci-fi horror genre of the 1990s. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: A team of scientists, led by Xavier Fitch (Ben Kingsley), discovers an extraterrestrial DNA sequence sent from space. They use this genetic material to create a human-alien hybrid named Sil (Natasha Henstridge). As Sil rapidly matures, it becomes evident that she possesses dangerous predatory instincts, leading her to escape from the research facility in a bid for freedom. With a primal drive to reproduce, Sil embarks on a deadly spree, and a team of experts, including a government assassin (Michael Madsen), a biologist (Marg Helgenberger), and an empath (Forest Whitaker), is assembled to track her down before she fulfills her sinister mission. This nerve-wracking and suspenseful tale of genetic experimentation gone wrong keeps audiences on the edge of their seats with stunning special effects and an engaging mix of science fiction and horror elements. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

This week on Fabulous Film and Friends, we're concluding our look into the paranoid, dystopian lens of 70's sci-fi by discussing three of the four versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. We're talking the 1956 version directed by Don Siegel and starring Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, King Donovan, Carolyn Jones, Larry Gates and Sam Peckinpah in a cameo, comparing it to the 1978 version starring Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum, Veronica Cartwright, and Leonard Nimoy along with both Don Siegel and Kevin McCarthy in cameos, as well as the 1993 version called Body Snatchers directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Gabrielle Anwar, Terry Kinney, Meg Tilley, Christine Elise, Billy Wirth, R. Lee Ermey and Forest Whitaker. My guests this week are series regulars Roseanne Caputi, David Johnson and George Young, and of course, the inimitable Gordon Alex Robertson. Before we harvest the crop of pod people, the synopses: All three films center around the idea that an alien species has invaded our planet and has replaced members of our community with look-alikes sprung from plant-like pods. The key difference in the pod people is that their personalities are devoid of emotion. Which Body Snatchers film wins the war? Find out!

Michael Elias is an award-winning writer, actor and director who's written film, television, theatre and fiction. His new novel, You Can Go Home Now, is a timely and thoroughly entertaining psychological thriller featuring a female cop on the hunt for a killer while battling violent secrets of her own. I've read You Can Go Home Now and can tell you it's a deeply engaging mystery with a lot of heart. Michael is also the author of the novel, The Last Conquistador. Born and raised in upstate New York, Michael moved to New York City after graduating from St. John's College in Annapolis to pursue a career in acting. He was a member of the Living Theatre and acted at The Judson Poets Theatre, La MaMa, and Caffé Chino. Michael then transitioned to Hollywood and with Frank Shaw wrote the screenplay for The Frisco Kid starring Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford. With Eve Babitz he wrote Envoyez les Violons. And then he began a long writing partnership with Rich Eustis. Together, they wrote the screenplays for Serial, Young Doctors in Love and they created the popular sitcom, Head of the Class for ABC, which was partially based on Michael's experience as a high school teacher in New York City. Michael also worked with Steve Martin, a collaboration that included material for Steve's comedy albums, network TV specials, and the screenplay for The Jerk. Michael wrote and directed Showtime's Lush Life with Forrest Whitaker and Jeff Goldblum, leading to a nomination for Best Director at The Cable Ace Awards . His semi-autobiographical play, The Catskill Sonata, about a small hotel in upstate New York, was directed by the legendary filmmaker, Paul Mazursky.
The planet Onderon has seceded from the Republic and joined the Separatist Alliance under a new king. Rebel forces have fled into the jungle and appeal to the Jedi for help. Oh wait, this happened at the start of the clone war by the legitimate government under a new king. The rebels claim he's a traitor though so it's totally fine.Anakin, completely off the cuff, invents the School of the Americas to help the freedom fighters on Separatist planets ensure their liberty? The fact that Padme is a majority stakeholder in Space Chiquita Bananas is probably coincidental. Yoda is down to help, but Obi-Wan pegs this as enabling terrorism. Anakin, because he's the worst, states that this is actually an insurgency and… points for vocab I guess. The Jedi council is split between pragmatists and idealists with Yoda and Obi-Wan suggesting that terror should not be a means to an end. Anakin and Mace suggest that they're merely helping Rebels, and Jedi Master Honru Kissingeru is getting real sweaty in the background. Anakin Ahsoka and Rex head to Onderon as ‘advisors' with Obi Wan to keep an eye on them.We meet Saw Gerrara for the first time riding a Tarakian mount. On a scale of Forest Whitaker, he's a lot closer to Fast Times at Ridgemont High than Rogue One at this point in his life. We also meet Steela and, hey, it's Lux Bonteri! Obi-Wan and Anakin hide behind polite fictions by stating that they aren't here to fight the war for the Onderonians. Ahsoka and Lux start talking about old times and Steela gets jealous. If Ahsoka were Kit Fisto's apprentice she'd already be engaging in some hands on training with them both, but she's only got Anakin so she immediately gets confused and sulky. RSVP Nandor the Relentless. The Rebels go through training and we see how much better at this Rex is than normal people. Shenanigans and training montages ensue. Lux and Saw apparently are rivals for leadership and all I can think of is the Bolshievek revolution. Trotsky lived a long and happy life right? The rebels have had many successful missions with zero civilian casualties, but the local population is on edge. The new King summons his predecessor and tells him to call off the attacks… which the old King denies he has a hand in since he is a prisoner and cannot leave the castle. We cut to the rebels talking about earning the civilian's trust, which they feel they can get if they hit one big target: A power station that powers all the droids. Saw Gerrara steals one of the B1's heads to grab the layout of the power substations. They stage a small attack to lure out a tank they need. Destroyers are sent, and their “slow-roll” training proves successful. A tank shows up, and they manage to disable it, then move on to complete their plan and destroy the power station. Soon the droids will forever sleep. The civilians are now cheering on the rebels. During the celebration, jealousy rears its ugly head again and Anakin tells Ahsoka to stay focused in a real “pot calling the kettle black” kind of moment. The Jedi, via Spacetime™, give an inspiring speech on how to proceed next. The King gives an update to Dooku, who tells the King he's sending more troops and a new general. We cut back to Steela, giving her own inspiring speech, being nominated as the leader… which rubs Saw the wrong way. He rushes out, Steela chases after him and reveals that Saw is her brother.https://twitter.com/ClosingCrawlhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/closing-crawl/id1530133296https://www.closingcrawl.com/Merch at: https://bit.ly/spacetimetm

You know, Jabbo gets away with alot. He's on a pretty impressive, uncontrolled movie picking streak. Scene In Fifteen belongs to the people! And Nashon! Not the guy that picked Repo Men this week. We did say any movie, so give us Repo Men, and we'll give you a rating! Your favorite host is back, with her all too spoiled co-host. Scene In Fifteen keeps it rolling with this 2010 Sci Fi gorefest starting Jude Law and Forrest Whitaker. Crazy movie with a crazy plot and some interesting scenery to boot, but is it enough? Since its release this 80's flick is still considered by many to be one of the best war movies ever made. The director — who himself was wounded twice while serving with the US Army in Vietnam — famously put his cast through a grueling "boot camp” to help immerse them in the world of their fictional characters. With an all-star cast and loads of visually striking practical effects, this Vietnam War epic won more awards than any other film during the 59th Academy Awards. So prepare for digging foxholes, waking up with ant bites and surviving ambush duty as Tim Williams and guest co-host JB Huffman from "Manly Movies" Podcast discuss “Platoon” from 1986 on this episode of the 80's Flick Flashback Podcast! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: Big Harold falls and rolls down a hill during the opening credits. Forest Whitaker claims it was a real, unintentional fall. When they are cleaning the latrines, you can hear "Good morning Vietnam". A recording of the real Cronauer. This film came out a year before that movie. Military advisor Dale Dye witnessed Oliver Stone suffer an attack of post-traumatic stress disorder on-set while filming the village scene. He claimed that they had a good cry together afterwards, based on their mutual experience in Vietnam. The final battle in the movie was a recreation of an actual event that was witnessed by technical advisor Dale Dye, who was a combat correspondent with the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines. Toward the end of the film, when the reinforcements arrive after the battle, Rhah reaches into a dead VC's breast pocket, pulls something out, and keeps it, while looking around nervously. The item he is removing is heroin, which VC soldiers used as a painkiller. Many heroin-addicted U.S. troops did the same thing. The scene implies that Rhah's mystical quality is a symptom of a larger problem. CW: This episode delves into the coercion, harassment, and sexual assaults committed by Harvey Weinstein throughout his career. If you wish to skip this portion of the episode, coverage starts at timecode 30:54 and ends at timecode 1:01:09. Further warning for sexism. We continue our deconstruction of Joe Esterhaz's An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn, the winner of the 19th Annual Golden Raspberry for Worst Picture! We learn the history of the use of the Alan Smithee pseudonym for directors, cover Esterhaz's overall demeanor and public perception, and (unfortunately) shine a light on the awful deeds of Harvey Weinstein (who is in this damn movie for some reason), and attempt to fix this thoroughly flawed and confused mockumentary. It was former president Lyndon B. Johnson who once said, “At times, history and fate meet at a single time in a single place to shape a turning point in man's unending search for freedom.”Whether it be consciously or subconsciously, turning points in our lives are when an important change takes place which in turn affects our future. One small change, thought to be inconsequential at the time, can open up a world of new possibilities or close the door on a period in our lives we would rather forget. Perhaps it is transitioning between being single and being married. A career change, the decision to quit something, or the courage to leave everything behind could be the catalyst for a turning point.Former heavyweight boxing champion of the world, George Foreman, sees his entire life as a series of turning points. From fleeing a life of crime in the streets as a youth, to making the reluctant decision to lace up a pair of boxing gloves for the first time, to dedicating his life to Jesus Christ as an adult, Foreman knows firsthand how one small change can have life-lasting impact.Foreman is the subject of a new biopic releasing this weekend called “Big George Foreman”. Starring Khris Davis, Forest Whitaker, and Jasmine Mathews, the movie tells the miraculous story of a young man destined for failure who rose to prominence through sheer grit, determination, and the will to win.Foreman joins us on the Crossmap Podcast to talk about the new movie and his rivalry-turned friendship with Muhammed Ali. Listen as George shares about the turning points that defined who he is as a fighter, a businessman, and most importantly as a man of God.Big George Foreman Movie WebsiteLinks to Crossmap Crossmap Website Crossmap Facebook
[NB: Due to file-corruption issues, this episode's sound isn't stellar; apologies for any inconvenience!] For a third-choice star in a first-draft action movie, Dennis Quaid's quite good in 2008's Vantage Point, a fridge-magnet-poetry "thriller" script whose "what if In The Line Of Fire + 24 + Dave gave DQ the adrenaline trots" logline invited multiple weary comparisons to Rashomon in (uniformly negative) reviews. Despite dialogue some film student shook out of the Michael Bay Presents: Boggle cup, a Frogger algorithm used as a car chase, inconsistent blocking, an inert title, and Quaid adopting the wrong posture for a Secret Service agent, we did find a handful of things to enjoy, like William Hurt doing an imitation of that flappy dude outside the car wash while getting shot, and imagining Niles Crane listing budget rental-car models. What happens when you hire one legendary TOP-tier movie star (Paul Newman) returning to play a character he played once before 25 years prior (Fast Eddie Felson in 1961's The Hustler)....pair him up with one giant up-and-coming movie star (Tom Cruise)....and then hire possibly THE greatest American filmmaker (Martin Scorcese) of the past 50 years to direct?? Well the result might very well be an excellent road movie/sports drama all set within the world of competitive billiards. If nothing else, it might be worth watching just to see Cruise learn the ropes from Newman....or DOES he? Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, John Turturro, Helen Shaver, and Forest Whitaker also round out the cast.Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Today I'm joined by legendary character actor William Fichtner. I had him on the show to discuss his latest film 88. Having appeared in a wide range of films along with television and theater roles over the course of his career, William Fichtner continues to carve out a distinctive reputation as one of our most versatile and talented actors, whether in comedy or drama, action or character study. He is one of Hollywood's most distinct and familiar faces. Fichtner can next be seen in the Robert Rodriguez feature film Hypnotic alongside Ben Affleck and Alice Braga, and in 88 directed by Thomas Ikimi. Other recent films include The Birthday Cake, co-starring Ewan McGregor and Val Kilmer; The Space Between, opposite Kelsey Grammer and directed by Rachel Winter; Jack & Josie directed by Sarah Lancaster; Armed, written and directed by Mario Van Peebles; Finding Steve McQueen with Forest Whitaker, and opposite Jeffery Wright in the indie feature O.G. directed by Madeleine Sackler that premiered on HBO. Fichtner also starred alongside Jon Voight in the indie feature American Wrestler: The Wizard; Krystal directed by William H. Macy, and produced and starred in the indie feature The Neighbor. Pivoting to the other side of the camera, Fichtner directed, produced, co-wrote, and starred in his feature film Cold Brook shot mostly in his hometown of Buffalo, New York. Segueing between television and feature films, Fichtner led an ensemble cast in the original first 2 seasons of the international crime series Crossing Lines. He recurred on HBO's Entourage from 2009-2011 and played ‘FBI Agent Alexander Mahone' for three seasons on Fox's hit drama series, Prison Break. William recently played Adam on CBS's hit show Mom opposite Allison Janney, from creator Chuck Lorre. Forest Whitaker, LETS CHAT ABOUT HIS MOVIES.
Waiting to Exhale is a 1995 American romance film directed by Forest Whitaker (in his feature film directorial debut) and starring Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett. The story centers on four women living in the Phoenix, Arizona, area, and their relationships with men and one another. All of them are "holding their breath" until the day they can feel comfortable in a committed relationship with themselves. Come tune-in and listen to coach KA as he explains how being able to forgive yourself requires empathy, compassion, kindness, and understanding. It also requires you to accept that forgiveness is a choice and only you have the power to choose to forgive yourself. The question then becomes "Are You Still Waiting to Exhale"?
