Nothing Comes Easy The Life Of Rodney Dangerfield From Michael Seth Starr Releases

NOTHIN' COMES EASY: The Life of Rodney Dangerfield (April 29, 2025) is the first biography of the "bug-eyed, sweaty, herky-jerky, tie-pulling comedian with the doleful countenance." Dangerfield's indelible beat-down image was played for laughs, but there were sad truths behind his sad-sack persona. TV writer Michael Seth Starr has crafted an immensely entertaining bio of the comedian's slog up the show business ladder. Ten years as a C-level stand-up comedian, he quit the business to sell aluminum siding and paint to keep the lights on. Then he went back to the clubs under an entirely new name, from Jack Roy to Rodney Dangerfield. A career-changing appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show at the ripe age of forty-five would be the lucky break, opening doors to television, movies, and comic fame at last. His catch phrase, "I don't get no respect," underscored his circuitous rise to the top after years of setbacks and grit. "What stood out for me, in authoring this book," writes Starr, '"was Dangerfield's perseverance in the face of such overwhelming odds. I was impressed at how he launched a second comedy career as a man already in his forties and out of the game for a decade. He never abandoned his undeniable urge to get back in the game and to share his seemingly unending reservoir of magical one-liners." At the beginning of his comeback, he began writing jokes for comedians like Jackie Mason and Joey Bishop, in the days before the "no respect" persona was solidified. He worked agentless, making his own deals. And it took him a solid five years to clinch his now celebrated debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. It took another few years of hustling on the circuit before he landed on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, which opened a wealth of doors in Hollywood. Dangerfield's comedy style - a self-mocking angst, the comedy of the perpetual loser - was endearing and universal. He was the schlubby Everyman snubbed by life, finally making it big. Soon Dangerfield would be leaving his mark in films, most famously in Caddyshack and Back to School. He was rebuffed in later years by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - which refused him membership. But Dangerfield had already cemented his place in comedy history as a writer and performer. When he died in 2004, his death made international headlines. Among his pallbearers were George Carlin, Roseanne Barr, Chris Rock, Larry David, Andrew Dice Clay, Jon Lovitz, and Carl Reiner. The book closes with a highly engaging chapter, "Riffs on Rodney," with remembrances of the comic from his peers including Jay Leno, Rita Rudney, Bob Nelson, Robert Wuhl, and Pauly Shore. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Support 'The People's Joker': https://www.thepeoplesjoker.com/ Joku and Rosa review and analyze 'The People's Joker' a 2022 / 2024 American parody superhero film directed by Vera Drew, and written by Vera Drew and Bri LeRose. The film unofficially parodies characters from the Batman comics, and the main character is a transgender woman based on the Joker, played by Drew. The film also features Scott Aukerman, Tim Heidecker, Maria Bamford, David Liebe Hart, Robert Wuhl, and Bob Odenkirk in supporting roles. We also review 'Nosferatu' a 2024 American gothic horror film written and directed by Robert Eggers. It is a remake of F. W. Murnau's 1922 film Nosferatu, itself inspired by Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. The film stars Bill Skarsgård as the vampire Nosferatu and Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp as the married Hutter couple, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe in supporting roles. We also review and discuss 'Crash' a 1996 Canadian erotic thriller film written, produced and directed by David Cronenberg, based on J. G. Ballard's 1973 novel of the same name. Starring James Spader, Deborah Kara Unger, Elias Koteas, Holly Hunter and Rosanna Arquette, it follows a film producer who, after surviving a car crash, becomes involved with a group of symphorophiliacs who are aroused by car crashes and tries to rekindle his sexual relationship with his wife. Maybe like me, this one grew on you when you realized the movie wasn't about the big game. In 1994, everyone was still taught to believe a player who wanted anything more than a scholarship was a greedy leech with no love for the game…and we just never really asked where all the money did go. This movie did help that conversation along, but it also had some fantastic performances - even by non-actors - some really funny scenes and, of course, probably the best movie basketball playing ever.

Nelson G from Average Home Theater Reviews and I are joining forces to discuss our favorite episodes from each season and both movies. In our premiere episode, we'll discuss all 6 episodes from Season 1. "The Man Who Was Death" - Niles Talbot (William Sadler), a prison executioner, is laid off from his job when the local legislature abolishes the death penalty. From there, he becomes a vigilante, administering his own style of justice to acquitted murder suspects. "And All Through the House" - Elizabeth (Mary Ellen Trainor), a greedy, philandering housewife, kills her second husband (Marshall Bell) for his insurance money. Upon getting rid of the body, she is unexpectedly attacked by an escaped mental patient (Larry Drake) dressed as Santa Claus who has been going around killing women. She soon fears that her young daughter may be the psychotic Santa's next victim. "Dig That Cat… He's Real Gone" - A carnival daredevil known as Ulric the Undying (Joe Pantoliano) is buried alive for his grand finale. Through a series of flashbacks, he tells the viewers how he was formerly a homeless vagrant who had undergone a doctor's experiment in order to transfer a cat's gland into his brain, giving him its nine lives and the ability to temporarily resurrect a number of times. However, during his final stunt, he suddenly remembers that he may have miscounted just how many lives he has left. Also starring Robert Wuhl. "Only Sin Deep" - Sylvia Vane (Lea Thompson), a young, narcissistic prostitute, "sells" her beauty to a voodoo-dabbling pawnbroker (Britt Leach) so that she can use the money to snag a rich bachelor, Ronnie Price (Brett Cullen), but she soon regrets it when her face begins to unexpectedly age at an accelerated rate. "Lover Come Hack to Me" - Peggy and Charles (Amanda Plummer and Stephen Shellen) are a newlywed couple who, after a car accident, end up settling for the night inside a decrepit mansion belonging to Peggy's aunt. While inside, Charles plans to kill Peggy for her inheritance, but he soon learns that Peggy's family has a dark past, and that Peggy herself is not who she seems to be. "Collection Completed" - An uptight elderly man named Jonas (M. Emmet Walsh) is forced into retirement, and soon discovers his wife Anita's (Audra Lindley) obsession with adopting animals into their home, leading him to use the animals for a hobby of his own. Vera Drew is the creator of The People's Joker, which evolved from an attempt to re-edit Todd Phillip's 2019 into its own completely original work of art — a very affectionate parody of Batman mythology and all the ideas it takes for granted. Combining comedy, animation, and Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher's flair for cartoonish drama, it's a punkish, dreamy dismantling and rebuilding of Gotham as we know it, made with verve and daring. We talk with Drew about making a microbudget masterpiece, dealing with some legal issues, and scoring a cameo by Robert Wuhl. This week, we delve into Tim Burton's Gotham with Batman (1989)! Starring Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl, Pat Hingle, Billy Dee Williams, Michael Gough, and Jack Palance, this film is the first installment in what would become a rather disjointed 4-film Batman series. Featuring a darker Gotham and more serious tone than the Adam West Batman films of the 60s, this film features Bruce Wayne's war on crime and his conflict against The Joker. This Batman iteration was partially influenced by The Killing Joke, The Dark Knight Returns, and Red Hood, and Batman creator Bob Kane worked as a consultant on the film. Campy and goofy as much as it tries to be serious, this film stands out as unique among the slew of Batman entries...
