In this episode, we travel to the far Northside with comedy writer and podcaster Aaron Lee (Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, Ted) to see the Rockin'-Ringo-Rama double of 200 Motel and The Magic Christian, which opened at the Devon Theater on February 4, 1972. Topics include movie theaters Herschell Gordon Lewis owned, The Monkees' influence on Frank Zappa, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, Flo & Eddie, Ringo's acting chops, Peter Sellers's talent, Christopher Lee's Dracula cameo, Badfinger's soundtrack, and more Chicago history than you'll know what to do with!
For years, actor/comedian Tim Progosh has wondered: with all the great comedians Canada has produced over the years, why is there no Canadian Comedy Hall of Fame?Progosh has done more than wonder. He's made it happen. For more than 20 years, his efforts have been stymied by celebrations cut short by the 9/11 attacks, by deals falling through during a recession, by COVID and actor strike interruptions. Who knew saluting the funny was such a serious and challenging business? On this podcast episode, Progosh tells how -- while still set on an eventual brick and mortar venue -- he was able to gain the political smarts to get a virtual Hall off the ground. This year's inductees include Eugene Levy and Martin Short, the cast of SCTV as a troupe, Jim Carrey and Red Green Show star and creator Steve Smith and even late great Hilarious House of Frightenstein comedy chameleon Billy Van. Going even further back, early film star Marie Dressler and radio's The Happy Gang also made the Hall. Festivities and live comedy shows take place in Hamilton, Ont., Feb. 21 through 24. Go see the shows (featuring Ron James, Shaun Majumder and other comedians) but first listen as Progosh salutes his Canadian comedy heroes on this week's laugh out loud episode of brioux.tv: the podcast.

As promised, returning to Fika with Vicky this week is Mitch Markowitz. So if we didn't get to your question or comment during his last busy visit, here's your chance. Mitch was Co-Producer for The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, a popular Canadian Children's Television series. It premiered September 4th, 1971 and still runs on various markets today…over 50 years later! However, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein didn't just appeal to children. Also syndicated in markets across the USA, the age of its audience grew along with its size, and it found a home in college dormitories and anywhere people enjoyed laughter, old monster movies, and a bit of randomness. Along with appearances made by Vincent Price, multiple characters being played by Billy Van, Fishka Rais, Guy Big, and Julius Summer Miller, Mitch would fly by as Super Hippy. Join us as we discuss The Hilarious House of Frightenstein and beyond. What was, what is, and what is to come. You can follow Mitch on X @IMTVSSUPERHIPPY Joining me as co-host this week is Dave Bennison. Aside from being a Hilarious House of Frightenstein aficionado and good friend of Mr. Markowitz, Dave is the solo force behind Historical Niagara, former radio host of The Long Story Short Show, co-owner of Stick to the Story & a man of many hats and characters.. Produced for one season of 130 episodes, this wild show ran for decades in syndication. Beloved by generations of Canadians, both children and adults, it blended psychedelics, slapstick humour, education and a whole lot of fun. I think I was about 35 before I figured out that Billy Van played all those crazy characters on The Hilarious House of Frightenstein. The series, consisting of 130 episodes cranked out over nine months, premiered more than 50 years ago in 1971. It is one of the most eccentric and enduring, locally-produced, TV shows ever made in Canada. It broke so many rules in childrens television that you'd have to cut it down to about four minutes to get it on a broadcast network today. (Edited versions still play on Crave, Tubi and YouTube.)My guest on this podcast is Mitch Markowitz whose older brother Riff Markowitz took the idea of a horror-spoof kiddie show to Hamilton's CHCH. Mitch helped produce but also, at his brother's urging, appeared on-camera in short segments as "Super Hippy." Vincent Price was flown up from Hollywood to shoot 400 introductory segments which helped the Markowitz's syndicate the series stateside. Jumbo-sized Fishka Rais played Igor, assistant to The Count, Billy Van. Van, later a key comedy player on Sony & Cher, also played Griselda the Ghastly Gourmet, The Librarian, Bwana Clyde Batty, The Oracle, The Maharishi and the Wolfman -- the latter a werewolf disc jockey. Van wasn't supposed to play any of them, but, as Markowitz relates, he stepped in when a Plan-A that would never fly today didn't pan out. Van's tour-de-force was an inspiration to Mike Myers, Jim Carrey and other Canadians who grew up with the series before hitting it big in Hollywood. Markowitz shares those stories and talks about the recent animated spinoff in a Halloween party episode even "Brucie" -- a copyright-infringing monster The Count was always trying to revive -- would enjoy.
T.V. writer, producer & showrunner KEN CUPERUS (The Stanley Dynamic, Hudson & Rex, Happy House of Frightenstein) talks about growing up in Winnipeg, how he found himself at the Emmy awards, and why the beloved Canadian cult classic "The Hilarious House of Frightenstein" is too hot to handle. The Hilarious House of Frightenstein is a gleefully twisted kids show responsible for terrorizing generations of children and stoners alike throughout the 70s and beyond. All 100+ episodes of the horror-themed series were shot in Hamilton, Ontario, in the span of just 9 months — and it shows. Special guest Quincy Raby joins us on a journey back in time, looking at schlocky, (probably) coke-fuelled basic cable programming.
Episode 7. Join Jess and Paul as they venture into the 1971 TV show "The Hilarious House of Frightenstein" (starring Billy Van, Vincent Price, Fishka Rais, Guy Big) for the spooky month. In the three-channel universe most Canadian kids in the 1970s grew up in, Hilarious House of Frightenstein was a weekend morning staple. From its wacky pacing to the lyrical monologues of legend Vincent Price, and memorable characters like The Count, Igor, and Grizelda The Ghastly Gourmet, the CHCH Hamilton series - shot over just nine months in 1971 - has established a cult following. This week, the show celebrated its 50th anniversary, marked by the debut of new pre-school adaptation Happy House of Frightenstein, the first of a series of spin-offs in the works from Headspinner Productions. INTERVIEW BEGINS AT 22:20 In the great history of TV comedy names like Gleason, Kovacs, Carson, Belushi, Newhart roll off the tongue. Yet there is a name that SHOULD have, and in all reality COULD have made that list… Van. Van? Van who? Billy Van. This brilliant and versatile Canadian had the talent and the opportunity to become a superstar, yet, he decided he would rather stay in Canada and lead a more quiet and private life. Van did achieve cult status as the creator and star (and star and star ETC) of Canadian Children's show The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, a show that has been called kids entertainment on acid, a sorta of sketch comedy series about monsters hosted and narrated by Vincent Price, where Van plays not one, not two but TEN characters!!!!! But Billy Van did more, so much more and thankfully fellow Great White Northerner Greg Oliver along with Stacey Case has documented this amazing man in the new book Who's The Man? Billy Van! Greg Oliver is a prolific Canadian writer, historian, and recipient of the James C. Melby Historian Award. He has written extensively on both Hockey and Professional Wrestling and is the co-founder of Slam Wrestling, check out his site and BUY HIS BOOKS!! http://www.oliverbooks.ca/the-billy-van-story.html So kick back, enjoy and please rate and share the show..let's keep the audience growing. In this episode Mark interviews USA Today bestselling author Patricia McLinn about her three decades of experience in writing and publishing. Prior to the interview, Mark shares a word from the episode's sponsor, Findaway Voices . . .You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. In the personal update section Mark shares the following: A reminder about the Public Lending Right for Canadian authors (and authors from UK, AU, NZ) An article he recently wrote for Hamilton Magazine (including a bit about the TV show The Hilarious House of Frightenstein An interview he did with the guys from the Paranormal Faction Podcast in Harriston, Ontario in a haunted theatre His forthcoming visit to Book Expo America in New York An update on the prize offered for commenters on Episode 70 The deadline to comment has been extended to the end of April A new StoryBundle called the Write Stuff 2019 Spring Bundle that is available until early May. A steal for $5 for 4 books or 15 for all 12 books plus a $50 online lecture. Listeners will have a chance to win this bundle In their chat, Mark and Patricia talk about: The original publishers Patricia worked with when she had a few different series traditionally published How hearing a talk at NINC given by Chris Anderson (who coined the concept of "The Long Tail") inspired Patricia to take a fresh look at the publishing industry and to consider indie publishing opportunities The "Writer's Work" website Patricia created in 2009 as "insurance" in case the publishing industry went a little bonkers Getting the rights back for all of her previously released works (except for one German edition of a title) CONTROL being one of the main differences between traditional publishing and indie or self-publishing The difference in timeframes and how publishers will sometimes sit on a manuscript for a year The reality of the "16 days" you had on the bookstore shelves with titles published in the Harlequin Silhouette imprint What clauses and types of contracts would have to have for Patricia to consider signing one again Of course, mid-way through the interview, Patricia turns the table and starts asking Mark questions. After a brief section of talking about things publishers do well, and things they don't do so well, Mark realizes what Patricia has done (she is a great podcast host and asks great questions), and turns the tables back on her. They then talk about: What dried wallpaper paste has to do with helping Patricia make the move towards writing and publishing The one letter Patricia got back from an editor earlier in her career that said: "It's clear that you know nothing about the publishing industry" The various elements of romance and mystery that Patricia likes to include in her writing How Patricia feels that writing 3 to 5 books a year still isn't enough to keep up with the characters and ideas floating through her mind The reasons why Patricia started the Authors Love Readers Podcast and how she wanted to model over a simple conversation with a writer where readers could eavestrough Patricia's recent non-fiction book for writers called Survival Kit for Writers Who Don't Write Right How authors have approached Patricia with tears in their eyes after she delivered a presentation on this same topic because they thought they were the only ones who wrote in a more "pantsing" type of style The reason why Patricia has the book for sale for 99 cents on her own website Patricia's number one piece of advice for writers - that writing advice is a buffet. You can try a bit of this, a bit of that, go back for seconds of something else. YOU control the buffet After the interview Mark reflects on the concept of writing advice being a buffet that authors can selectively pick and choose from. In 1971, Mitch Markowitz and his brother Rafael “Riff” Markowitz started filming their new children’s cult classic comedy horror sketch program The Hilarious House of Frightenstein! Back then, they had no idea just how popular it would become in Canada, the US and across the world. The Hilarious House of Frightenstein was a Canadian children’s television series … Continue reading "Mitch Markowitz: Hilarious House of Frightenstein"
This week, the sisters got their hopes up, only to have them immediately dashed into many small pieces by the 70s spooky variety show for kids, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein. It had puppets, creepy characters, and His Elegance Himself, Vincent Price... but it was best left buried in the memories of the poor children who had to watch it.
Mitch Markowitz, the associate producer, head writer and one of the stars (Super Hippy, The Mosquito) of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, is the special guest on this episode of the Really Awful Movies Podcast. A quirky sketch comedy for kids, all 130 episodes were made in a nine-month span starting in 1971. The show was done in Hamilton, Ontario (think Pittsburgh, but less glamorous) and for reasons that will become clearer, became an unlikely, long-running, multi-generational global hit. Horror icon Vincent Price starred in introductions for the show's various segments. The legend had always wanted to work on a project for kids [interested listeners can check out our interview with Victoria Price, Vincent's daughter] The legendarily prolific hard-working Price, filmed all of his nearly 400 segments in four days for a fee of $13,000 and did it all in one summer to boot. On Canadian TV stations, the show generally aired as a children's show in an after-school or weekend morning time slot. In the United States, however, many stations aired it in a late night slot aimed primarily at college students. That's not an indictment of our respective educational systems! Growing up in Toronto, the authors of this site couldn't help but be intrigued by the weirdness, the audacity, and the transgressive nature of this little show. On this episode of the Really Awful Movies Podcast: Markowitz discusses the origins of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, Markowitz also discusses Vincent Price's humility and kindness on the set, and "writing scary" for Mr. Price, The inspiration for Austin Powers' Mini Me character how Markowitz enlisted the help of Ryerson University students to write the show, and penning sight gags for kids.
