For years, actor/comedian Tim Progosh has wondered: with all the great comedians Canada has produced over the years, why is there no Canadian Comedy Hall of Fame?Progosh has done more than wonder. He's made it happen. For more than 20 years, his efforts have been stymied by celebrations cut short by the 9/11 attacks, by deals falling through during a recession, by COVID and actor strike interruptions. Who knew saluting the funny was such a serious and challenging business? On this podcast episode, Progosh tells how -- while still set on an eventual brick and mortar venue -- he was able to gain the political smarts to get a virtual Hall off the ground. This year's inductees include Eugene Levy and Martin Short, the cast of SCTV as a troupe, Jim Carrey and Red Green Show star and creator Steve Smith and even late great Hilarious House of Frightenstein comedy chameleon Billy Van. Going even further back, early film star Marie Dressler and radio's The Happy Gang also made the Hall. Festivities and live comedy shows take place in Hamilton, Ont., Feb. 21 through 24. Go see the shows (featuring Ron James, Shaun Majumder and other comedians) but first listen as Progosh salutes his Canadian comedy heroes on this week's laugh out loud episode of brioux.tv: the podcast.

As promised, returning to Fika with Vicky this week is Mitch Markowitz. So if we didn't get to your question or comment during his last busy visit, here's your chance. Mitch was Co-Producer for The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, a popular Canadian Children's Television series. It premiered September 4th, 1971 and still runs on various markets today…over 50 years later! However, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein didn't just appeal to children. Also syndicated in markets across the USA, the age of its audience grew along with its size, and it found a home in college dormitories and anywhere people enjoyed laughter, old monster movies, and a bit of randomness. Along with appearances made by Vincent Price, multiple characters being played by Billy Van, Fishka Rais, Guy Big, and Julius Summer Miller, Mitch would fly by as Super Hippy. Join us as we discuss The Hilarious House of Frightenstein and beyond. What was, what is, and what is to come. You can follow Mitch on X @IMTVSSUPERHIPPY Joining me as co-host this week is Dave Bennison. Aside from being a Hilarious House of Frightenstein aficionado and good friend of Mr. Markowitz, Dave is the solo force behind Historical Niagara, former radio host of The Long Story Short Show, co-owner of Stick to the Story & a man of many hats and characters.. Produced for one season of 130 episodes, this wild show ran for decades in syndication. I think I was about 35 before I figured out that Billy Van played all those crazy characters on The Hilarious House of Frightenstein. The series, consisting of 130 episodes cranked out over nine months, premiered more than 50 years ago in 1971. It is one of the most eccentric and enduring, locally-produced, TV shows ever made in Canada. It broke so many rules in childrens television that you'd have to cut it down to about four minutes to get it on a broadcast network today. (Edited versions still play on Crave, Tubi and YouTube.)My guest on this podcast is Mitch Markowitz whose older brother Riff Markowitz took the idea of a horror-spoof kiddie show to Hamilton's CHCH. Mitch helped produce but also, at his brother's urging, appeared on-camera in short segments as "Super Hippy." Vincent Price was flown up from Hollywood to shoot 400 introductory segments which helped the Markowitz's syndicate the series stateside. Jumbo-sized Fishka Rais played Igor, assistant to The Count, Billy Van. Van, later a key comedy player on Sony & Cher, also played Griselda the Ghastly Gourmet, The Librarian, Bwana Clyde Batty, The Oracle, The Maharishi and the Wolfman -- the latter a werewolf disc jockey. Van wasn't supposed to play any of them, but, as Markowitz relates, he stepped in when a Plan-A that would never fly today didn't pan out. Van's tour-de-force was an inspiration to Mike Myers, Jim Carrey and other Canadians who grew up with the series before hitting it big in Hollywood. Markowitz shares those stories and talks about the recent animated spinoff in a Halloween party episode even "Brucie" -- a copyright-infringing monster The Count was always trying to revive -- would enjoy.
T.V. writer, producer & showrunner KEN CUPERUS (The Stanley Dynamic, Hudson & Rex, Happy House of Frightenstein) talks about growing up in Winnipeg, how he found himself at the Emmy awards, and why the beloved Canadian cult classic "The Hilarious House of Frightenstein" is too hot to handle. The Hilarious House of Frightenstein is a gleefully twisted kids show responsible for terrorizing generations of children and stoners alike throughout the 70s and beyond. All 100+ episodes of the horror-themed series were shot in Hamilton, Ontario, in the span of just 9 months — and it shows. Special guest Quincy Raby joins us on a journey back in time, looking at schlocky, (probably) coke-fuelled basic cable programming.
Episode 7. Join Jess and Paul as they venture into the 1971 TV show "The Hilarious House of Frightenstein" (starring Billy Van, Vincent Price, Fishka Rais, Guy Big) for the spooky month. They talk more about ADHD Awareness month, their different experiences with horror movies, and Paul's childhood infatuation with the Tower of Terror movie. In the three-channel universe most Canadian kids in the 1970s grew up in, Hilarious House of Frightenstein was a weekend morning staple. From its wacky pacing to the lyrical monologues of legend Vincent Price, and memorable characters like The Count, Igor, and Grizelda The Ghastly Gourmet, the CHCH Hamilton series - shot over just nine months in 1971 - has established a cult following. This week, the show celebrated its 50th anniversary, marked by the debut of new pre-school adaptation Happy House of Frightenstein, the first of a series of spin-offs in the works from Headspinner Productions. On this episode of Broadcast Dialogue - The Podcast, we talk to Headspinner's Michelle Melanson and Ken Cuperus on licensing a Canadian pop culture institution.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Today we talk to renaissance man Stacey Case about Who's the Man? Billy Van! Stacey was the proprietor of Hamilton's Billy Van museum, and worked with author Greg Oliver on this in-depth bio of the Canadian performer (and, of course, star of Hamilton's legendary Hilarious House of Frightenstein).
INTERVIEW BEGINS AT 22:20 In the great history of TV comedy names like Gleason, Kovacs, Carson, Belushi, Newhart roll off the tongue. Yet there is a name that SHOULD have, and in all reality COULD have made that list… Van. Van? Van who? Billy Van. This brilliant and versatile Canadian had the talent and the opportunity to become a superstar, yet, he decided he would rather stay in Canada and lead a more quiet and private life. Van did achieve cult status as the creator and star (and star and star ETC) of Canadian Children's show The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, a show that has been called kids entertainment on acid, a sorta of sketch comedy series about monsters hosted and narrated by Vincent Price, where Van plays not one, not two but TEN characters!!!!! But Billy Van did more, so much more and thankfully fellow Great White Northerner Greg Oliver along with Stacey Case has documented this amazing man in the new book Who's The Man? Billy Van! Greg Oliver is a prolific Canadian writer, historian, and recipient of the James C. Melby Historian Award. He has written extensively on both Hockey and Professional Wrestling and is the co-founder of Slam Wrestling, check out his site and BUY HIS BOOKS!! http://www.oliverbooks.ca/the-billy-van-story.html So kick back, enjoy and please rate and share the show..let's keep the audience growing. Welcome to Story Time with Darcie! In every episode, you hear a piece of my own short fiction. I’m an eclectic writer, so you may be surprised by the genres and situations, but what these stories have in common is their exploration of big ideas.I am delighted to bring back Nikolas Yuen for today’s story! You heard him as the narrator and title character in August’s episode featuring Godly Musings Over Triple Espresso and as the villains in June’s episode, Refuge. Today, Nik again takes on the narrator and title character in Diary of a Dead Man: Birth of a Poltergeist. Yup. Today, in honour of Halloween, you’ll hear a ghost story. Please be advised, as a ghost story, Diary of a Dead Man: Birth of a Poltergeist of course carries a Content Warning for Death/Dying, and as a Poltergeist story, also for Violence, and Blood. But it doesn’t start there. It starts with a father, mourning the loss of his child … At the last minute, I decided I wanted to create a bit more of a spooky atmosphere for today’s ghost story. I went to FreeSound.org, to collect some ambient noises. These are created by wonderful producers and are offered free of charge on this creative commons website. Thank you to those producers who created those sounds. The sound design itself, I did. It’s another gift of this podcast to me that I’m learning so much about sound editing. So, thank you FreeSound.org, thank you to the three producers who created our background sounds. I hope that I did justice to our story today. It had been over a year since I read that story before hearing Nik’s version. I didn’t realize until it was over that my jaw was clenched with anxiety. I can’t decide which character I feel worst for. Our dearly departed, having to watch his family move on without him, his son for losing his father twice (once to death and a second time to darkness), or the widow for losing two romantic partners, the just as he recovers from the first. Once again, thank you, Nik, for sharing your talents for this story. You’ve become a regular here on Story Time with Darcie! I’ll be looking for the next project I can bring you in for. You can hear more of Nik in Bleak December Inc's "The Wickerman" and "Return to Frightenstein" or back here as soon as I can make it happen! If you would like to become a voice on Story Time with Darcie, please, reach out! My eclectic stories need a variety of voices, and, while Nik has a variety of voices on his own, yours will also be a welcome addition! Thank you for listening. Welcome to Story Time with Darcie where in every episode, I read you a piece of my own short fiction. I’m an eclectic writer, so you may be surprised by the genres and situations, but what these stories have in common is their exploration of big ideas.I have to confess, I’m not reading the story this month. Don’t get me wrong, there will definitely be a story, and it’s one of my favourites, but the narrating character is male and I am not. Luckily, the talented Nikolas Yuen is joining us again! You may recall, Nik joined as a guest voice in May where he took on the villains in Refuge. Today’s episode allows us to enjoy more of his range as he takes on the narrating voice as well as the dialogue. And it is amazing! Nik found his way into acting through a series of fortunate events and has been hooked on it ever since. While he enjoys the stage, he is particularly passionate about voice acting which is particularly lucky for me. You can hear more of Nik in Bleak December Inc's "The Wickerman" and "Return to Frightenstein." If you enjoy Nik’s reading today, be sure to subscribe or visit Story Time With Darcie again in October. But I’m getting ahead of myself again.Today, Nik reads us Godly Musings Over Triple Espresso, the story that inspired the title for Musings, my collection of short stories published in 2019. More a vignette than a short story, Godly Musings Over Triple Espresso is told from a unique perspective and deals with mental health issues and contains (Content Warning) Adult Language. If you have any kids around, this might be one to put your ear phones on.So, let’s let Nik begin …I get chills when I hear Nik read this story. Amazing! Thank you for sharing your talent with us, Nik! I hope you enjoyed the story, because that’s it for today’s episode of Story Time with Darcie. If you would like to become a voice on Story Time with Darcie, please, reach out! My eclectic stories need a variety of voices, and yours will be a welcome addition!Thank you for listening. Welcome to Story Time with Darcie. In every episode, I read you a piece of my own short fiction. I’m an eclectic writer, so you may be surprised by the genres and situations, but what these stories have in common is their exploration of big ideas. This month, Story Time With Darcie is sharing it’s first story that requires a CONTENT WARNING for adult language, gun violence, and sexual violence. Please, take extra care of children in ear shot, and if any of these are triggers for you, perhaps skip this month. For the last few months, as the world has suffered under the weight of Covid-19, I have shared light, funny stories. Yet our current situation continues, the world keeps spinning, and time keeps passing. Our other global issues and concerns are not self-isolating. And perhaps, you are ready to think about what kind of world we want to rebuild as our isolations end. I originally wrote Refuge in July of 2018, when Trump was detaining refugees crossing the US southern border. The story is a satire, though not a humourous one. Writing it was a way for me, as a Canadian, to work through my fear, anger, and sadness. Like Three’s A Crowd, you can read the original version of Refuge on my facebook page or in my book Musings: a collection of short stories. Also like Three’s A Crowd, this is a re-edited, remastered, reworked, 2.0 version of Refuge. I’m delighted to welcome Nikolas Yuen as today’s guest voice. Nik found his way into acting through a series of fortunate events and has been hooked on it ever since. While he enjoys the stage, he is particularly passionate about voice acting, and is eager to lend his voice to projects that can make use of his vocal talents. You should check out Bleak December Inc's "The Wickerman" and "Return to Frightenstein," the latter of which saw him (perhaps 'heard' is the better word) take on The Wolfman, a role initially played by the legendary Billy Van some forty years prior. I’m fortunate that recent events have also brought Nik here! This is not the last time you’ll hear his voice on Story Time With Darcie! (He has helped me with special stories for August and October.) But before I get too far ahead of myself, let’s hear today’s story … Well, that’s it for another episode of Story Time with Darcie. Special thanks to Nikolas Yuen for lending his voice to our villains this month. If you'd like to hear more from Nik you’ll find him here on Story Time With Darcie in August and October, as a guest voice on Bleak December (bleakdecember.com) and The Music Box (musicboxstories.com), and when Covid frees us back to social interactions you can watch him on stage with King’s Town Players, Domino Theatre, and more. You make magic with any character you take on, Nik! I can’t wait to introduce more of my characters to our listeners through your voice. Listeners, if YOU would like to become a voice on Story Time With Darcie, please, reach out! My eclectic stories need a variety of voices, and yours will be a welcome addition! Thank you for listening. To read more of my stories and perhaps inspire my next one, join me on facebook at DarcieTKelly. And of course, subscribe on your podcatcher of choice for future episodes of Story Time With Darcie. Until next month, stay well and keep smiling.Direct Link to text version of original (not 2.0 version) Refuge.

Comedian, author, podcaster and performer Sean Cullen joins the Invasion for this episode. Sean talks about how his love for speculative fiction started with works such as Tolkien's The Hobbit, Mr Bass's Planetoid by Eleanor Cameron, Stephen R Donaldson's Lord Foul's Bane, and Asimov's Foundation and Robot stories. We discuss the ups and downs of following a series, especially a long-running collection. And he talks about what makes a good story. Sean and I dissect the Star Wars franchise, especially the prequel trilogy and the latest stand-alone focussing on Han Solo. We also talk about Space 1999 and Star Trek, and how science fiction is often a product of its time, and whether it's possible to go back to and enjoy your first loves in the genre. We then get into a discussion of more recent favourite books, including the works of Neal Stephenson, Dan Simmons, and Kim Stanley Robinson. And we reminisce about the madcap fun of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein. We also talk about the books Sean has written for kids, including Hamish X and the Cheese Pirates and The Prince of Neither Here Nor There, as well as a superhero-themed novel he's currently writing for adult audiences. And Sean shares his thoughts on occasionally working science fiction references into his stand-up comedy. Our interview took place in June 2018 via a Skype call between Sean's headquarters aboard The Seanpod, currently drifting along the bottom of James Bay, and my studio in the Lair of bloginhood, located in a sumptuous beach house on the shores of a methane lake on Saturn's moon Titan. Find out more about Sean Cullen, his books, and his comedy albums on his website: seancullen.com Listen to episodes of The Seanpod on his podcasting page: theseanpod.com Watch Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs on TV or YouTube. When a serious Private Investigator takes a cartoonish case, the possibility of insanity (or at least inanity) increases by a factor of 88. To prove the point, Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, and Alan Silvestri combined film noir with cartoon antics in a live action/animated movie named Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Tune in for ‘toons this week on TechnoRetro Dads. In the NEWS The Hilarious House of Frightenstein looks to get a reboot, eh? Eggo’s boost in sales from the Stranger Things craze has abated. Showbiz Pizza’s house band, The Rockafire Explosion is back together, playing at an arcade in Kansas City. Everyone’s favorite video game hedgehog (Sonic) is getting his own movie. We Love Our Cereal Shane in Grand Rapids lets us know about the Cold Stone Creamery mashup with Malt-O-Meal for ice cream cereal. After hearing about the Dippin’ Dots cereals last week, we think this might be a trend. PLUS: JediShua gives his first thoughts on Chips Ahoy! cereal and shazbazzar reviews Dippin’ Dots Banana Split cereal. Who Framed Roger Rabbit Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Kathleen Turner, and Charles Fleisher combined forces in 1988 to create the one-of-a-kind live action/animation movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It’s a tale of mystery, murder, and maroons in a world where cartoons are people, too. The trouble doubles when Roger Rabbit is framed for the murder of Marvin Acme and Judge Doom’s goon squad searches high and low for the scared hare. Reluctant detective Eddie Valiant goes against his long-standing practice of avoiding ‘toons and protects Roger long enough to get to the bottom of the case. Speaking of bottoms, Lou Hirsch portrays Baby Herman, a baby-faced ‘toon actor who is in dire need of a diaper change. If you haven’t seen Who Framed Roger Rabbit, you need to get to it immediately! (WARNING: Parental Guidance Suggested) Feedback Mike MacDonald spots Star Wars in The Great Outdoors so shaz and Shua identify the fast food premiums from 1980 and 1983. One of the creators, Mitch Markowitz is looking to make a documentary about the surprise hit kids show. Guest - Mitch Markowitz scottradleyshow
In 1971, Mitch Markowitz and his brother Rafael “Riff” Markowitz started filming their new children’s cult classic comedy horror sketch program The Hilarious House of Frightenstein! Back then, they had no idea just how popular it would become in Canada, the US and across the world. The Hilarious House of Frightenstein was a Canadian children’s television series … Continue reading "Mitch Markowitz: Hilarious House of Frightenstein"
This week, the sisters got their hopes up, only to have them immediately dashed into many small pieces by the 70s spooky variety show for kids, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein. It had puppets, creepy characters, and His Elegance Himself, Vincent Price... but it was best left buried in the memories of the poor children who had to watch it.
Mitch Markowitz, the associate producer, head writer and one of the stars (Super Hippy, The Mosquito) of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, is the special guest on this episode of the Really Awful Movies Podcast. A quirky sketch comedy for kids, all 130 episodes were made in a nine-month span starting in 1971. The show was done in Hamilton, Ontario (think Pittsburgh, but less glamorous) and for reasons that will become clearer, became an unlikely, long-running, multi-generational global hit. Horror icon Vincent Price starred in introductions for the show's various segments. The legend had always wanted to work on a project for kids [interested listeners can check out our interview with Victoria Price, Vincent's daughter] The legendarily prolific hard-working Price, filmed all of his nearly 400 segments in four days for a fee of $13,000 and did it all in one summer to boot. On Canadian TV stations, the show generally aired as a children's show in an after-school or weekend morning time slot. In the United States, however, many stations aired it in a late night slot aimed primarily at college students. That's not an indictment of our respective educational systems! Growing up in Toronto, the authors of this site couldn't help but be intrigued by the weirdness, the audacity, and the transgressive nature of this little show. On this episode of the Really Awful Movies Podcast: Markowitz discusses the origins of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, Markowitz also discusses Vincent Price's humility and kindness on the set, and "writing scary" for Mr. Price, The inspiration for Austin Powers' Mini Me character how Markowitz enlisted the help of Ryerson University students to write the show, and penning sight gags for kids.
