Who created Freaknik? Where did it go wrong? Will it ever make a comeback? Dear Culture is answering all your questions about the legendary picnic-turned-street party that took over Atlanta during spring break in the late '80s and early '90s. The announcement of the Hulu documentary Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told made people panic as flashbacks of their wild behavior were feared to be exposed. However, now that the documentary has dropped, should people be worried? The doc's co-creator and producer, Jay Allen, joins Panama Jackson and cultural critic Monique Judge to discuss what the documentary taught us. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A storyteller since childhood, Monique Judge has always had a passion for words and writing. Fulfilling her parents' idea of success, she followed the standard path of college and corporate career, working in consumer finance until the financial crisis in 2007. With the aspirations of teaching literature, Monique went back to college at the age of 40 and encountered a journalism class that changed the course of her life. Graduating with a degree in journalism, Monique began working as a journalist learning that instead of being a character in a story, she wanted to write her own story. Monique is an award winning journalist, news editor, content creator and storyteller. Monique specializes in information curation. She is all over social media, gives succinct media criticism, and advocates for media literacy. A word nerd, Monique is a fan of the Oxford comma, spends way too much time on twitter and has more graphic t-shirts than you. What You Will Hear in This Episode: Monique's personal story. Going back to college at 40. Pursuing journalism and becoming the manager of her own destiny. Managing anxiety, fear and doubt. Monique's work. Strengthening your voice and setting boundaries. The importance of staying focused. Media literacy advocacy. Understanding disingenuous tweets, framing, narrative and agenda setting. Independent journalism, fact checking and confirmation bias. Inspiring change. Quotes “You can either be a character in your own story or you can write your own story.” “I'm not going to accept any assignment that I don't feel passionate about.” “Opinion still needs to be based in fact.” “There is no shame in change, there's no shame in growth, there's no shame in evolution.” Mentioned: Social media @thejournalista MoniqueJudge.com Dan Gilmore https://bonniemarcusleadership.com/ https://web.facebook.com/bonnie.marcus/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/bonniemarcus https://twitter.com/selfpromote https://www.instagram.com/self_promote_/ Gendered Ageism Survey Results Forbes article 5 Tips to own the superpower of your age Purchase my book Not Done Yet on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Not-Done-Yet-Confidence-Workplace/dp/1989603785 ***If you enjoyed this episode of Badass Women Podcast, then make sure to subscribe to the podcast and drop us a five-star review.
This one has been circled on our calendar for awhile now. We welcome The Root dot com's favorite Auntie Unfiltered, the fantastic Monique Judge who discusses Boogie Nights (1997) with Calvin (Joe is on a well earned vacation). We discuss Paul Thomas Anderson's award winning second film at length and give it #theopentabspodcast treatment in full! The film is chock full of character studies and great moments and even at a length (heh heh) of over 2 and a half hours it left us wanting more. You don't want to miss this episode. Follow us, like us, subscribe, tell a friend! Follow our instagram @theopentabspodcast and let us know what you think!
The Root’s Monique Judge and Journalist/Podcaster Jay Scott Smith join the show to talk about the South Carolina primary, pandering, Ava Duvernay’s strong progressivism, and a strange and seemingly harmful rule in Utah. Plus, OJ breaks down Joe Biden’s South Africa lie in the latest edition of “Out of Africa.”

The 45th Dr. Joseph H. McMillan National Black Family Conference is happening in Louisville later this month, and this year's theme is "Elevating the Health and Safety of the Black Family and Community." Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon Martin's mother, will deliver a keynote speech at the conference, and she joins us on this week's show to talk about her advocacy work, and her son's legacy. We also check in with Monique Judge from The Root, about an article she recently published about homophobia and what she called "toxic black masculinity." And in a shocking Valentine's Day revelation, we learn that Jai still pokes people on Facebook.
Monique Judge - aka The Journalista and staff writer at The Root.Com - hails from California and is only the second non-Clevelander I've had on the podcast thus far. We talk about her sex life, her time as a side-chick and advice I should give my daughter, guns, social justice, and getting our nails done. Also, about the love I want her to have. She's also got company - and the bruise to prove it.
