Faith Roswell began her career unexpectedly when she was approached by a talent scout while studying for a degree in creative writing. This encounter led her to become an internationally recognized artist model. During her modeling career, Faith wrote extensively about her solo travel and adventure experiences. Her journey took a significant turn after blowing the whistle on a dangerous photographer who was later jailed. She began to look into what she could do to help freelancers, especially in creative industries, stay safe and she soon found that most of the self defense classes focused on the physical fighting which barely scratched the surface of what else was possible. Faith was inspired to develop a new approach called Armor for Life. Saith has recently been working as a researcher for one of the most popular true crime podcasts online. As a freelance writer, she specializes in travel, film, self defense, and women's rights. Exploration. The search for the unknown has shaped the history of our species, molding our behavior in ways we are only beginning to understand. And that understanding is about to come into focus for us today, thanks to today's guest, best-selling author and one of my favorite writers, Dr. Alex Hutchinson. Alex is well known, both for his popular Outside Magazine columns on the topic of sweat science, and his exceptional book Endure: Mind, Body and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance. His book influenced the direction I took with my own PhD work. He first joined us waaaay back in 2019 – one of our first 20 episodes ever recorded – which now number over 350. He brings a fascinating background as an elite runner, a PhD in Physics and is basically who I want to be when I grow up – except he's a decade younger than me.You're going to love this discussion. SO many insights covering our draw toward exploration and what it means for high performance and life. I got a chance to read an early release of his new book: The Explorer's Gene – and it is outstanding. I've underlined and scribbled all over it, which is a good sign. We'll have a link to it in the show notes. You can find his new book, along with other valuable resources on his website at AlexHutchinson.netInfo re earning your health & wellness coaching certification, annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium & more via https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ Best-in-class coaching for Employers, EAPs & wellness providers https://catalystcoaching360.com/ Tap into the home of the (freely available) Not Done Yet! articles on unlocking life's 2nd half here. This is such a great conversation! In this episode of She's Not Done Yet, I (Becky Berry) chat with Suzanne Maggio, author of “Estrellas: Moments of Illumination along the El Camino de Santiago,” about what she experienced on her first walk along the El Camino. Suzanne also hosts her own podcast, From Sparks to Light – Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times. Suzanne is a university lecturer in psychology, counseling and social work and comes from a large Italian family who didn't necessarily believe in asking for help. “Estrellas” is her second book. We had a powerful conversation about how she decided to embark on the walk, the people she met, and the myriad gifts she discovered along the way – including reconnecting with her husband. We also talked about one of my favorite coaching topics – expectations. Suzanne shares with us her experience in allowing the journey to remind her to appreciate the gift of the present moment, embracing and accepting how the days unfolded and the unique nature of the people you encounter along the way. One of my personal favorite parts of our conversation revolves around the work of Henri Nouwen, particularly his Five Lies of Identity: 1 – I have what I have. 2 – I am what I do. 3 – I am what others say or think about me. 4 – I am nothing more than my worst moment. 5 – I am nothing less than my best moment – and – “We are not what we do, we are not what we have, we are not what others think of us. Coming home is claiming the truth. I am the beloved child of a loving creator.” Suzanne includes Book Club questions at the end of the book and they're not like any book club questions you've encountered before! Instead of the standard book club fare, Suzanne presents the questions in grouping that include On Leaning In and Simplicity. After you've listened to our chat, I'm sure you will want to get the book in your hands quickly! Thanks in Advance for your help: I hope you enjoy this episode. If you did, don't keep it a secret! Welcome to a special episode of The Coaching Lab, where we're discussing a hot topic in the world of health & wellness coaching: Coaching and Counseling. What's the difference? How do they complement one another? Can one replace the other? Does coaching have a role within employee assistance programs? Are there red flags to look for related to either of the two? With mental health garnering critical attention nationally, it's a subject that must be addressed, whether for coaches, counselors, employers, EAP providers or the general public. Our guest, Suzanna Cooper, is both a licensed counselor and a nationally board-certified health and wellness coach and recognized nationally as a thought leader in the field. Her background includes two master's degrees and two licenses covering counseling and occupational therapy. In addition, she has combined this with advanced training in positive behavior change with a specialized focused on intrinsic motivation and motivational interviewing. Suzanna is also one of a very select group of individuals who have been invited to participate in the motivational interviewing network of trainers, a collection of the best and brightest minds from across the globe in this specialty area. She currently serves as the chief learning officer for the Catalyst Coaching Institute and speaks regularly at conferences and events nationwide. Personally, she's the mom to three adult children, married for 32 years to the luckiest man in the world and enjoys everything from hiking to skiing, paddleboarding to running, and especially hanging out with her granddaughters.Info re earning your health & wellness coaching certification, annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium & more via https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ Best-in-class coaching for Employers, EAPs & wellness providers https://catalystcoaching360.com/ Tap into the home of the (freely available) Not Done Yet! articles on unlocking life's 2nd half here. We had a great time talking to Bronte Fall about her new album “Not Done Yet” (released October 25, 2024) and the special meaning behindthe title. We talked about having a good support system to help silence that inner critic, and how you don't have to “do it all at once.” Teri Bracken's career as Brontë Fall began almost accidentally. The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs had always been a music obsessive, dreaming of forming her own bands and playing on stages. While working as the “door girl” at an indie music venue in Chicago, a chance opportunity allowed her to bookher first gig as an artist. She quickly came up with a band name (honoring her favorite writers, the Brontë sisters), compiled all the original songs she had, and never, ever looked back. Fall's road to acclaimed songwriter began in childhood when she picked up piano at age 7. Classical violin lessons soon followed, and eventually she was tapped as the singer/violinist in a collegerock band with a group of nineties rock loving frat boys. After leaving the guys, she further pursued her passion for violin playing at Berklee, which is where she fell in love with songwriting once and for all. Fall eventually made her way to Nashville—a dream come true considering it is a songwriter's mecca. Though most of her instrumental focus is on guitar these days for pure convenience's sake, Fall still brings out her violin and even performs on piano during her shows—she never sings a note empty handed. These live shows and releases have earned her plenty of praise, with Music Mecca noting: "Finding beauty at the end is what Brontë Fall seems to always know how to do and listeners get to follow her journey alongside her.” After a family tragedy struck in 2022, Fall rededicated herself to her craft, emerging with plenty of scar tissue and a batch of new songs that she considers her best yet. That lineup is highlighted by "Woman Like Me.” The track is both a reminder of Fall's skills as asongwriter and a significant leap forward in both sound and style. It's a defining statement, the culmination of years grinding for a shot and, at the same time, a new beginning. SCRIPTURE: Philippians 2:19-30 SHOW NOTES: We invite you to subscribe to our ministry website – Discover God's Truth – where you will find resources to encourage you in your Walk with God. What does it mean to do the work of Christ? To serve the Lord? Jesus came to serve, and He paid the ultimate price... on the cross... for our sins. Out of gratitude for His unspeakable gift, we serve Him and live our lives to bring glory to God. "But you know Timothy's proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. I hope, therefore, to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me, and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also. " Philippians 2:22-24 How has Timothy proven worth? His faithful service to Jesus Christ. Paul offered kind and truthful words of commendation for his ministry partner, Timothy. Now, he speaks to them about one of their church leaders, Epaphroditus. "So, receive him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men, for he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me. " Philippians 2:29-30In these verses, Paul strongly commends Timothy and Epaphroditus. They have served, suffered, and fought for the Gospel message. Receive them with great joy! Ever felt like the universe was conspiring against your dreams? I certainly did when I faced a pivotal "no" from God, a moment that seemed like a crushing defeat but turned out to be a profound lesson in spiritual growth. Join me on this episode of You're Not Done Yet as I unravel my journey of learning to truly listen to God, putting Him at the forefront of my decisions, and how understanding the significance of a "no" has shaped my path. We often see a "no" as a setback, but sometimes it's a divine act of preparation, setting the stage for something greater. Let's shift our perception of "no" from a punishment to an opportunity for growth and alignment with a higher purpose. I'll share personal reflections on how those difficult moments of being told "no" have been integral to my spiritual journey, prompting a deeper relationship with God and a readiness for future "yeses." If you're wrestling with a "no" in your life, this episode offers insights on embracing it as a part of obedience and preparation, discovering the work we need to do in the present, and ultimately preparing our hearts for the "yes" that is thoughtfully planned for us. In this episode of She's Not Done Yet: Conversations with women over 50, I (Becky Berry) talk with Beverly Pimsleur. After listening to the podcast, Beverly reached out to me to share her story. Beverly is the embodiment of She's Not Done Yet. She's in her late 70's, has written a memoir and is looking for an agent, and is keeping busy as an activist for the Democratic Party. We had a wide ranging conversation covering the political situation in the Ohio college where she was a professor after the Kent State massacre (1972), widowhood, taking over her husband's business as a widow in the 80's, the importance of constant activism, and we compare abortion stories that happened across a generation (Beverly's in 1962 and mine in 1982). We decided that there's no arc to activism, instead, it's a straight line in the geometric sense - the line never ends. Thanks in Advance for your help: I hope you enjoy this episode. Feeling unfulfilled in her career as a journalist and Hollywood reporter, Sarah found her true calling when she happened upon the story of Arbella Stuart. Writing Arbella's biography opened up a whole new path for Sarah, coupling her love of writing with her lifelong fascination with the untold stories of women throughout history. Sarah Gristwood is a journalist and author committed to publicizing women's experiences throughout history. As a young journalist, she championed women's voices through outlets such as the Guardian Women's Page and as a founder member of Women in Journalism and The Women's Equality Party. As a historian, she has consistently explored the question of women and power through the ages. She now broadcasts regularly for Sky News, CNN and the BBC on royal and historical affairs. A graduate of Oxford University, she is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and of the RSA, who has been shortlisted for both the Marsh Biography Award and the Ben Pimlott Prize for Political Writing. Her most recent book, Secret Voices: A Year of Women's Diaries, is a captivating collection of extracts from women's diaries, looking back over four centuries to discover how women's experiences have changed down the years, and, of course, how they haven't. What You Will Hear in This Episode: 01:59 Sarah's Personal Story and Journey to Historical Biographies 05:11 Common Themes in Women's Diaries 08:40 Accessing Historical Diaries 11:15 Modern Diaries and Historical Perspectives 21:59 Personal Growth Through Journaling 32:24 Choosing the Diaries for the Book 35:27 Conclusion and Contact Information Quotes “One aspect of this book of Secret Voices for me was that in some ways the women in it were voicing some of my own concerns, thoughts, and traumas.” “Frustration is the single greatest emotion across all these generations.” "Journaling was a huge part of personal growth for many of these women." "A number of these women were voicing feelings, ambition, anger, that they weren't allowed to express elsewhere in their society." “I love that, for a number of these women, the battles were small personal ones. Some, like Charlotte Forton, were fighting huge public battles. But others were just opening the doors, moving, moving the goalposts on in their own small ways. "The immediate privacy of the diary form allowed them to voice those unacceptable feelings, anger, ambition, discontent." "Self-expression is so important, and for women, keeping a diary or journal is a great way to tell your truth and perhaps, as we talked about, never share it."
