Tracy Stone has been making a living performing since his lip sync days back at Mt. Hood Community College, where we met. He graduated from lip-syncs and dance contests to performing with Romeo and as the Amazing Tracy Stone. He did USO tours, Japan, Guam, Philippines and more! His current band, Designband (not “the” Designband) performs all over the greater northwest at casinos, clubs as well as weddings and private events. We met at MHCC and competed for years in lip syncs, dance contests and everything under the sun. I got a real job, and he has been steady performing since. I have been jealous (in a good way) ever since.
This episode features a conversation with Mt. Hood Community College student Bakr Alkarawi, who shares how his own experience as a student facing housing insecurity has propelled him to take action and work with college leadership, policymakers and community partners towards a bill in the Oregon legislature that would fund services and support for students facing houselessness. Bakr offers helpful perspective on what resources and staffing support have assisted him while taking GED and college-level coursework at Mt. Hood including the STEP grant, MHCC Foundation scholarships, and guidance from key faculty and staff along the way. Mt. Hood Community College President, Dr. Lisa Skari, discusses different strategies the college has taken to address student basic needs insecurity integrating student voices in this work. Lastly, Katie Brown, Director of Government Relations, at the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), talks about the current federal policy landscape related to community colleges and addressing students' unmet financial need. This community college priorities document from ACCT (and AACC) for the American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan legislation is a helpful summary and guide from the conversation with Katie.

Terica Buckner grew up in Portland Oregon and now lives in Vancouver Washington with her husband Andrew and their two year old daughter Emrys. She started working on cars at Benson High School in the automotive program at age 15 and started working as the shop helper at Hawthorne Auto Clinic just before her senior year. Terica continued her education by completing her Associate degree in Applied Science for Automotive at Mt Hood Community College, working as an automotive technician apprentice at Hawthorne Auto Clinic as part of the program. Shortly after graduating she became a service advisor at the Clinic and later earned her Bachelors degree in Business Administration. Terica expanded her skillset by becoming the bookkeeper while continuing service advising, utilizing both her degrees and automotive technical experience. [image: 20161217_arts_post-134_2,left,300x390,5852f415280b1e0339fc7fb2]Ever been in an American Legion hall? They're not fancy, but for a certain generation they're as familiar as the corner taproom. They're the place to go for a chat, cheap drinks and of course, monthly bingo — not to mention the assurance of finding people who've experienced military service.Legion membership is shrinking nationally, but one hall in Northeast Portland — an old Quonset hut with a dropped ceiling and scuffed floors — found revival by embracing new people and new voices.American Legion Post 134 on Alberta Street has become a home for all kinds of new voices. In the course of one evening, the audience heard a blazing variety of personal stories and essays, as well as poems and songs. Some writers are vets. Some aren't. Post commander Sean Davis holds book release parties for veterans who are publishing their own work. The post even has its own small press and published an anthology of war stories. [image: 20161217_arts_post-134,right,300x390,5852f395ba7639033f073981]So how do you convert a failing American Legion post into an oasis of community and expression, where veterans rub shoulders with queer kids and street people mix with art curators? We recently sat down with Davis, who — as you might remember — ran for Portland mayor last spring. He teaches writing at Mt Hood Community College and is the author of a memoir called "The Wax Bullet War." We were joined by Amelia McDanel — another Legion member, a Navy veteran and MFA grad of Antioch University-Los Angeles — who oversees the Legion Readers' series at the post.Read the full story: http://www.opb.org/radio/programs/state-of-wonder/article/portland-american-legion-post-134/
