The Education Myth: How Human Capital Trumped Social Democracy (Cornell UP, 2023) questions the idea that education represents the best, if not the only, way for Americans to access economic opportunity. As Jon Shelton shows, linking education to economic well-being was not politically inevitable. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, for instance, public education was championed as a way to help citizens learn how to participate in a democracy. By the 1930s, public education, along with union rights and social security, formed an important component of a broad-based fight for social democracy. Shelton demonstrates that beginning in the 1960s, the political power of the education myth choked off powerful social democratic alternatives like A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin's Freedom Budget. The nation's political center was bereft of any realistic ideas to guarantee economic security and social dignity for the majority of Americans, particularly those without college degrees. Embraced first by Democrats like Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton, Republicans like George W. Bush also pushed the education myth. The result, over the past four decades, has been the emergence of a deeply inequitable economy and a drastically divided political system. Jon Shelton is professor and chair of democracy and justice studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. In addition to The Education Myth he is the author of Teacher Strike! Public Education and the Making of a New American Political Order, which was the winner of the International Standing Conference of the History of Education's First Book Award in 2018. Shelton has also published work in the Washington Post, Dissent, Jacobin, Democracy: A Journal of Ideas, and other publications. He served as the Vice-Chair of the city of Green Bay's first ever Equal Rights Commission and sits on the Board of Directors for the Labor and Working-Class History Association and the Wisconsin Labor History Society. In this episode, I return to a topic I covered early on: rejection resilience. This time, I'm taking a direct look at ghosting. We explore the difference between hurt and harm, why not every disappearance is an act of betrayal, and how emotional entitlement shows up in the aftermath. For those in the BDSM community, where intensity and vulnerability run deep, ghosting can feel like a violation. But is it always? I break down why autonomy includes the right to walk away, how we confuse discomfort with danger, and what it really takes to move on without closure. It won't be easy listening, but it's a conversation that needs to happen.ReferencesCampbell, W. K., Bonacci, A. M., Shelton, J.,Exline, J. J., & Bushman, B. J. (2004). Host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Maceky to react to a busy week in Pittsburgh sports news, which included the release of the Steelers' schedule on Wednesday night. Is the NFL signaling that it expects Aaron Rodgers will ultimately sign with the team by creating a Week 1 matchup with the New York Jets, his former squad? How intrigued should we be by an early meeting with former Steelers QB Justin Fields? And is it a good thing or a bad thing that coach Mike Tomlin and Co. will face another late-season gauntlet with games against the Super Bowl-contending Bills, Ravens and Lions? Our duo tackles those questions, plus Jason's reaction to what we saw from names including Derrick Harmon, Will Howad, Kaleb Johnson and Jack Sawyer at rookie minicamp. Then on other fronts, they discuss the Penguins coaching search and College Football Playoff expansion. Is Washington Capitals assistant Mitch Love a name that should be high on fans' list? And is the ACC right in fighting the Big Ten and SEC proposals for how the playoff will look moving forward? Then in the third segment, airing on the PG's Pirates YouTube channel, Adam and Jason react to Jason's interview with Pirates owner Bob Nutting following the firing of manager Derek Shelton last week. Does Nutting have any actual power to improve the Pirates' economic disadvantage against teams like the Dodgers, Mets and Yankees? Why did he fire Shelton but not GM Ben Cherington, who's also struggled in his role? Has Nutting oversold the impact of injuries to names like Spencer Horwitz and Jared Jones on the team's slow start? What can be done to get names like Bryan Reynolds back on track? And is it past time that Bubba Chandler was promoted to the big leagues?

Why was Shelton relieved of his duties now, and what led up to it? What does this mean for the team going forward under Don Kelly, who was named manager in Shelton's stead? Is Kelly the long-term choice in the dugout? Is general manager Ben Cherington also on the hot seat? And why could Shelton never get the Pirates over the hump? Our duo answers those questions and more.

Donny Kelly will replace Shelton, at least in the interim, and Jason said the organization likes him a lot in the hopes the role becomes permanent. The Pirates fired Derek Shelton, but how much was he at blame? The guys think the job of Ben Cherington has put the team in a much more damming situation than Shelton did. The guys graded both of their jobs. Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo from the PG joined the show. Ray reacted to the George Pickens trade, who also said today he did NOT request a trade from the Steelers. What did Ray make of the return? Ray does think the clear intent next year is to draft a quarterback. Ray wouldn't be surprised if the Steelers looked to Allen Lazard as a receiver option since he is known buddies with Aaron Rodgers. The guys asked if Roman Wilson would play any pivotal role in the offense. Ray thought Rodgers played well at the end of last season, but the guys did not agree. Ray thinks next season is all about another shot at the trophy with their core guys. Total Request Thursday.

Welcome, Earthlings and Cybertronians alike, to another episode of Play Comics-where the only thing more confusing than the continuity is trying to fold yourself into a PS2 disc case! This time, we're rolling out (and occasionally transforming) into the wild world of the 2004 Transformers video game. Yes, the one that's based on Transformers: Armada-even though the box art was too shy to admit it, and the plot zigzags harder than a Mini-Con on a caffeine rush. Joining us for this electrifying adventure is none other than Charles Shelton from the TransMissions Podcast Network, a man who knows more about Autobots, Decepticons, and questionable voice acting than Unicron knows about planetary snacking. Together, we'll dodge Decepticlones, collect Mini-Cons like they're Pokémon, and ponder why Optimus Prime never just took a vacation in the Amazon (hint: robot allergies). So buckle up, hit that triangle button to transform, and prepare for a journey through nostalgia, PS2 graphics, and more robot drama than a Cybertronian soap opera. Let's see if we can save the universe-or at least get through the jungle level without rage-quitting. Learn such things as: Why do you need to experience things for yourself and not rely on others to decide if you'll like a thing or not? Do you really need to see all of those great Transformers characters that you've come to love so much? Wouldn't it be fine to just have a few of them? How did Soundwave get into here and mess with Charles's audio? Especially because he doesn't even show up in Armada? And so much more! You can find Charles on the  TransMissions Podcast Network which includes shows looking at the toys, the media, and even an actual play Transformers themed tabletop RPG game. Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to give his thoughts on the Steelers, the NFL draft, the end of the Penguins' season and the Pirates' West Coast road trip. On the football side, is Derrick Harmon the most uncomplicated pick for GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin? What about Kenneth Grant and Walter Nolen along the defensive line? And where do QBs Sheduer Sanders and Jaxson Dart fit into that conversation? Later, the duo reacts to Penguins GM Kyle Dubas appearing to signal in post-season comments Tuesday that he's looking more toward 2026-27 than next season in terms of competing meaningfully in the Eastern Conference. Is he being too passive with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang on the roster? How aggressively should he shop in NHL free agency this summer? Or move bad contracts owed to Tristan Jarry, Erik Karlsson and Ryan Graves? And where does coach Mike Sullivan figure into all of it? Then finally, in a segment airing on the Post-Gazette's Pirates YouTube channel, the guys react to Andrew McCutchen's angst about his playing time. Does he deserve better from manager Derek Shelton and GM Ben Cherington? How much longer does McCutchen plan to play? And is Shelton's lineup turnover an overall problem as well? Our duo tackles those questions, then discusses the team's mediocre record when Paul Skenes is on the mound and pressure on owner Bob Nutting after loud “sell the team” chants continued during the last homestand.
