Segment 3, August 5th, 2023 It's always fun to watch a project grow.  Over here at the Carolina Outdoors program, we've had the opportunity to visit with, learn from, & be entertained by a wide grouping of people. One of those people heads up Wild Bearings, is the author of a popular book at Jesse Brown's, Fly Fishing the Blue Ridge Parkway, NC Section. From that book came lectures, webcasts, and now a new undertaking, a new TV show on The Country Network - Wild Bearings Outdoors. Season one is in the books and season two is being planned now - first episode to be shot on the Biltmore Estate private waters. A discussion of how the book turned into a TV series. https://wildbearings.com/pages/webinars-points-of-interest with Sam Johnson. Johnson's YouTube presentations were noticed by management at the The Country Network which led to six episodes for the first season & has now been picked up for a second season. We'll learn how lighting, the setting, & the cooperation of the fish is a part of making a show.  Plus, Sam's show has a focus beyond just fishing.  A lot talks about the history of the watershed, the ecosystem, & the people & organizations that are a part of it.  He also talks about some of his favorite places not just to fish but to film & story tell a show. We'll find out about something that is required via digital and video programs:  Bloopers Learn Sam Johnson's answer when he's asked about the famed professional Bass fisherman & television angler Bill Dance bloopers that still air.  We'll find out if Wild Bearings Outdoors has any of those? A vast network of fungi circles the globe—interwoven throughout the soil, coating surfaces above ground and even living inside of plants! There is an astonishing level of diversity among fungi, and this biodiversity is coupled with incredible chemical diversity. In this episode of Foodie Pharmacognosy, our guest is Dr. Nick Oberlies, an expert in the field of pharmacognosy who specializes in the study of fungal chemistry! He explains how he and his team find fungi growing inside plants and throughout the environment in the hunt for new molecules to treat cancer, infections, and more.    *** ABOUT OUR GUEST Nicholas Oberlies is Patricia A. Sullivan Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at The University of North Carolina Greensboro. Nick received his B.S. in Chemistry from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) in 1992 and his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy from Purdue University (West Lafayette, Indiana) in 1997, where he studied under Professor Jerry L. McLaughlin. He then spent a year as a postdoctoral chemist at American Cyanamid (Princeton, New Jersey), where he investigated leads with insecticidal, herbicidal, and fungicidal properties from natural sources. In 1998, he joined the Natural Products Laboratory at Research Triangle Institute (RTI) in North Carolina, specifically to be mentored by Dr. Mansukh C. Wani and the now late, Dr. Monroe E. Wall, who are most well known as the co-discoverers of taxol and camptothecin. He rose progressively through the ranks of RTI and eventually directed the Natural Products Laboratory. In 2009, he moved his research group to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In particular, he was drawn to their Ph.D. program in Medicinal Biochemistry, where he could mentor the next generation of students in the chemistry of natural products. To date, he has mentored 7 Ph.D. students, 5 M.Sc. students, and more than a score of undergraduates. Graduates from his group are now faculty members, working in industry, or entering graduate programs and professional schools around the country. Nick has received several awards that speak to his accomplishments, including the Matt Suffness Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Pharmacognosy, the 40 under 40 Leadership Award from the Triangle Business Journal, the North Carolina Distinguished Speaker Award from the NC Section of the American Chemical Society, and the Junior Research Excellence Award from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.   *** ABOUT FOODIE PHARMACOLOGY  Now in Season 2 with more than seventy episodes! This week on the podcast, I start out by talking about cancelling the NC Section due to Hurricane Florence, which I maintain to be the right decision. I then mention that my wife and I will be on the September 24th episode of the Dave Ramsey show doing our Debt Free Scream. For the main topic, I discuss the idea of setting up your practice around your goals, not your current situation in order to make sure you don't get stuck on the plateau you're currently on and keep your focus on moving to the next level. After that, I mention the return of the Wake Action Pistol matches, and then plug the indexes I added this week for Ben Stoeger's "Reloaded" books.
