Send us a textShort Summary: A deep dive into the science of oxidative stress, antioxidants, aging, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.About the guest: Pamela Maher, PhD is a professor at the Salk Institute in San Diego, California, with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases, oxidative stress, and antioxidants.Note: Podcast episodes are fully available to paid subscribers on the M&M Substack and everyone on YouTube. Partial versions are available elsewhere. Full transcript and other information on Substack.Episode Summary: Dr. Pamela Maher discusses her research on cell death mechanisms, including apoptosis and ferroptosis, and their roles in health and disease. They discuss how oxidative stress from reactive oxygen species can damage cells, the body's antioxidant defenses like glutathione and studies on natural compounds—fisetin, curcumin, and cannabinol (CBN)—that may protect against brain cell loss. The conversation covers CBN's mitochondrial benefits in aging mouse models and broader risk factors for dementia, like obesity and hearing loss, emphasizing early intervention.Key Takeaways:Apoptosis is a controlled cell death process vital for development, while ferroptosis, linked to oxidative stress and iron, causes cells to burst and is tied to diseases like Alzheimer's.Oxidative stress arises when reactive oxygen species overwhelm antioxidants, damaging DNA, proteins, and cell membranes, especially polyunsaturated fats.Glutathione, a key antioxidant, relies on cysteine and declines with age, but supplements like N-acetylcysteine might help, though tolerability varies.Cannabinol (CBN), a THC byproduct, protects mitochondria and improves memory in aging mice, hinting at therapeutic potential beyond cannabinoid receptors.Middle-age risk factors like visceral obesity, type 2 diabetes, and hearing loss significantly increase dementia risk, but hearing aids can reduce it.Related episode:M&M #165: PUFAs in Brain Health & Disease, Dietary Fats, Brain Lipids, Nutrition | Richard Bazinet*Not medical aSupport the showAll episodes, show notes, transcripts, etc. at the M&M Substack Affiliates: Lumen device to optimize your metabolism for weight loss or athletic performance. For consumer products, packaging plays a huge role in your ability to raise money and get onto shelves. Investors and retailers are looking for traction, so you need to have packaging buttoned up before you even approach them. But here's the challenge: great packaging is expensive, and cheap packaging is very easy to spot and can tank your marketability. Every founder wants their product to be the “best dressed” without breaking the bank, but how do you actually achieve this? From a packaging perspective, there are a few key things you can do to make sure your product looks good, catches the eye, and stands out on shelves. We're joined in this episode by Dr. Sarah Barry, Reader in Chemical Biology at King's College London. Sarah started with an interest in biochemistry, went into organic chemistry because it was more concrete, and now applies her chemist's approach to understanding and manipulating biosynthesis of natural products for important areas of research, including antibiotics. This insightful conversation gives a peek into the mind of a chemical biologist's way of thinking about and approaching challenges that span biology and chemistry. We learn about the historical challenges of discovering and synthesizing natural products, but we then hear about how innovations in molecular biology are allowing researchers to revisit this field with a new approach. Sarah and her team identify and manipulate genes, express and purify proteins in the lab, and then characterize those enzymes for their abilities to drive biocatalytic transformations that are beyond challenging using traditional organic or inorganic chemistry approaches. Our conversation spans from the details of the molecular biology methods used, to the high-level applications being explored in this research, all with an ease that only someone this interdisciplinary could do. Welcome back to The Trip Report Podcast, a production of Beckley Waves, a Psychedelic Venture Studio. This week, I am speaking with Dr. Jackie von Salm, Ph.D., co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Psilera, a biotech company pioneering early-stage psychedelic-inspired drug discovery and development for neurological conditions. If you've ever been curious about the intricate and fascinating world of drug discovery, this conversation is a must-listen.Jackie walks me through the entire process, from scaffolds to IND submission and all the steps in between.Along the way, we discuss her background in natural product chemistry, the role of secondary metabolites, and a unique property of adaptive physiology whereby some types of stress actually strengthen organisms. We discuss the origin story of Psilera and the inspiration from 2 Bromo-LSD, a non-hallucinogenic compound that has been successfully used by people suffering from cluster headaches, among other neurological conditions. We discuss the increasing role of AI and computation in the drug discovery process but also the ‘chemical intuition' that one develops after years of practicing chemistry. We dive into the emerging field of neuropsychiatric biomarkers, a toolset that has eluded researchers, clinicians, and patients in this particular field, and how EEG and other brain imaging technologies may be the answer. We discuss the perception of psychedelic drug development in the eyes of the pharma world and much more. And now, I bring you my conversation with Dr. Jackie von Salm.Listen to the episode on Substack, Spotify, Google or Apple.Credits:* Hosted by Zach Haigney * Produced by Zach Haigney, Erin Greenhouse, and Katelin Jabbari* Find us at thetripreport.com* Follow us on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTubeTheme music by MANCHO Sounds, Mixed and Mastered by Rollin Weary This is a public episode. Andrew Lewin delves into the story of a fishery union in Newfoundland blocking the government from passing their budget. The union's protest revolves around issues with crab fishing, prices, and sales restrictions, sparking a significant public demonstration. Join Andrew as he uncovers the complexities of the situation and explores how individuals can advocate for ocean protection and sustainable fishing practices. The primary issue at hand revolves around the crab fishing industry in Newfoundland, particularly the snow crab fishery. Currently, fishermen are required to sell their catch to Newfoundland processors at a set price, with restrictions preventing them from selling outside the province or country. This lack of competition in the market allows processing plants to dictate prices, leaving fishermen with limited control over their earnings. The fishermen are advocating for free enterprise, aiming to have the autonomy to set their own prices and sell to a broader market. By being able to sell their catch at their preferred price and to a wider range of species, fishermen believe they can secure better margins and ensure a more sustainable livelihood. The desire for free enterprise stems from the frustration of having to adhere to government-mandated pricing and limited selling options, which hinders their ability to make a profit that covers their operational costs and provides a sustainable income. The protest highlights the longstanding tension between fishermen and the government in Newfoundland, dating back to the Cod moratorium in the early 1990s. The collapse of the Cod fishery had a significant impact on the economy and fishing communities in Newfoundland, leading to a lack of trust between fishermen and the government. The current protest reflects a broader struggle for autonomy and fair treatment within the fishing industry, emphasizing the importance of empowering fishermen to have more control over their businesses and economic outcomes. The issue raised by the Newfoundland fishermen underscores the complexities of fisheries management and the need for a balance between conservation efforts and supporting the livelihoods of those dependent on fishing. By allowing fishermen the freedom to set their own prices and expand their market reach, it could potentially lead to a more sustainable and equitable fishing industry in Newfoundland. The fishing industry, particularly in Newfoundland, is facing significant challenges due to monopolies in processing plants dictating prices. Fishers are finding their ability to set their own margins severely limited, impacting their livelihoods and the sustainability of the industry. In the episode, it was highlighted that fishers in Newfoundland, particularly crab fishermen, are facing restrictions on where they can sell their catch and at what price. Currently, they are required to sell their catch to Newfoundland processors at a set price, with no option to sell outside the province or country. This lack of competition allows processing plants to dictate prices, leaving fishers at a significant disadvantage. The issue of monopolies in processing plants not only affects the income of fishers but also hinders their ability to cover costs associated with fishing, such as boat maintenance, fuel, and gear expenses. Without the freedom to set their own prices based on market demand, fishers are left with little control over their profit margins, making it challenging to sustain their businesses. The situation in Newfoundland reflects a broader problem within the fishing industry, where processing plants hold significant power over fishers, impacting their economic stability and autonomy. The call for free enterprise and the ability to sell seafood at competitive prices is crucial for the long-term sustainability of the fishing industry and the livelihoods of fishers. Addressing the issue of monopolies in processing plants is essential to ensure fair compensation for fishers, promote competition in the market, and support the economic viability of fishing communities. By allowing fishers the freedom to set their own prices and explore diverse market opportunities, the industry can move towards a more equitable and sustainable future. Negotiations and regulations in the fishing industry play a crucial role in ensuring fair compensation for fishers and protecting the environment. As discussed in the podcast episode, the fishing industry, particularly in Newfoundland, has faced challenges with regulations that limit the ability of fishers to sell their catch at fair prices. The current system restricts fishers to selling their catch to specific processing plants at set prices, leading to concerns about lack of competition and unfair pricing practices. Improving negotiations and regulations in the fishing industry is essential to address these issues. Fishers, like the crab fishermen in Newfoundland, are advocating for the freedom to sell their catch at prices that reflect the true value of their efforts and investments. By allowing fishers to sell their catch outside the province and even internationally, they can access a broader market and potentially secure better prices for their products. Moreover, enhancing regulations to promote fair competition among processing plants can help prevent monopolistic practices that dictate prices to fishers. By giving fishers more control over their catch and pricing, they can operate their businesses more effectively and sustainably. This can lead to better livelihoods for fishers and a more equitable distribution of profits within the industry. In addition to ensuring fair compensation for fishers, improving regulations in the fishing industry is crucial for environmental protection. Sustainable fishing practices are essential to maintain healthy fish stocks and preserve marine ecosystems. By implementing regulations that promote sustainable fishing methods and responsible resource management, the industry can contribute to long-term environmental conservation. Overall, the podcast episode highlights the importance of reevaluating and enhancing negotiations and regulations in the fishing industry to achieve a balance between economic viability, fair compensation for fishers, and environmental sustainability. By addressing these aspects, the industry can move towards a more equitable and environmentally conscious future.

Nick Craciun underwent a remarkable transformation, overcoming depression and addiction by adopting a lifestyle centered on detoxing, homegrown sprouts, microgreens, juicing, infrared saunas, and regular exercise. About my Guest: In early 2021, Nick's life was marked by poor health, depression, excess weight, and digestive issues due to an unfulfilling job in a machine shop, an unhealthy diet, and reliance on energy drinks. However, a turning point came when he discovered the Health Hero Show with Tim James through podcasts, leading him to join the Inner Circle group coaching community. Through Tim's teachings, Nick underwent a remarkable transformation, overcoming depression and addiction by adopting a lifestyle centered on detoxing, homegrown sprouts, microgreens, juicing, infrared saunas, and regular exercise. A year later, he felt like a completely new person. Despite a severe workplace injury in July 2022 that crushed and broke his ankles, Nick attributes his full recovery to maintaining a healthy lifestyle before and during the injury and staying positive afterward. As a single father to a teenage daughter, she remains the center of his world. Nick now works for Chemical Free Body as the Health Hero Specialist and health coach, runs a microgreens business from home, and educates children on the importance of growing food and cultivating sprouts and microgreens for themselves. --------------------------------------------- Thanks to my Sponsors for Helping Support me: If you or know some body you know is struggling with anxiety and want to know how to be 100% anxiety free, in 6 weeks, without therapy or drugs, fully guaranteed - then let me tell you about our sponsor Daniel Packard.
