Data scientist Emily Hadley on navigating AI in healthcare, offering practical advice for maintaining patient agency amid algorithmic decision-making. Summary This interview with data scientist Emily Hadley examines the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare through a deeply personal lens. Hadley's journey began when her own health diagnosis coincided with her graduate studies in analytics, revealing how algorithm-driven systems often affect patient care—especially through insurance claim denials and clinical documentation. The conversation offers practical guidance for patients navigating AI-influenced healthcare, including reviewing AI-generated clinical notes for accuracy, challenging algorithmic insurance decisions, and insisting on human intervention when automated systems fail. Hadley advocates for preserving patient agency and rights within increasingly automated systems while highlighting how algorithm review boards are striving to provide governance in this largely unregulated space. The interview concludes with resources for staying informed about developments in healthcare AI, emphasizing that while AI tools are rapidly advancing, patient advocacy remains vital. However, the supplemental commercial plan denied some services the previous Medicare Advantage plan covered. Why? What algorithms did each plan use to determine coverage? How can I manage this? Welcome to the third installment of Artificial Intelligence Can Work for You. We've explored how I use AI in my podcast productions and delved into some AI basics with Info-Tech leader Eric Pinaud. I asked Emily Hadley, a data scientist at RTI specializing in AI algorithms for insurance coverage decisions, to join us. Early in her graduate studies, Emily was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. This led to her interest in studying insurance algorithms. A Data Scientist Awakes Health Hats: How did you gain expertise in AI? Emily Hadley: Great question. I was diagnosed right as I started a graduate program in analytics. In my undergraduate studies, I studied statistics in public policy. I liked the idea of using data to shape how policymakers make decisions, especially in the US. I had done some work with AmeriCorps and then went to grad school to really hone those skills. Being diagnosed at the same time that I was in grad school meant that I was navigating to new, informative, and educational areas. And I think that that's when I really came to realize the power of data and the power of AI in shaping the way that organizations and people make decisions. We live in a really algorithm-fueled society. We constantly encounter technology and AI systems, even when we don't realize it. An example I give is that I've faced many problems getting insurance to cover the things it is supposed to. I didn't realize until a couple of years ago that this is ...

Innovation is often seen as a function of big ideas and long-term investments, but in today's fast-changing world, organizations must rethink how they approach problem-solving and experimentation. In this episode, I sit down with Shellery Ebron and Annice Kim from RTI International to discuss how one of the world's most respected research organizations is embedding innovation into its culture and operations. RTI International is known for its groundbreaking research in science, health, and public policy. But what sets RTI apart is its commitment to making innovation a core value, not just an occasional initiative. Shellery and Annice share how RTI has shifted its approach, moving away from traditional, multi-year innovation cycles to a more agile, adaptable framework that allows for quicker experimentation and real-world impact. Throughout our conversation, we explore the challenges organizations face when trying to implement innovative ideas. One of the biggest hurdles is inertia—the resistance to change that exists in every industry. Shellery and Annice discuss the importance of storytelling as a tool to overcome resistance, emphasizing that getting buy-in requires painting a vivid picture of the future. Whether talking to business leaders, researchers, or policymakers, framing innovation in a way that speaks to their priorities is key. Another critical aspect of RTI's innovation strategy is breaking down ambitious ideas into smaller, testable projects. Instead of waiting for full funding or a perfect plan, they encourage teams to start with small experiments that confirm key assumptions and build momentum. This step-by-step approach ensures that innovation is not just a one-time effort but a continuous process that drives real change. From embedding innovation into corporate values to fostering a culture where experimentation is encouraged, this episode provides a fascinating look at how RTI International is shaping the future of research and social impact. Whether you're in the public or private sector, there are valuable lessons to be learned from their approach to making innovation a sustainable, organization-wide practice.

We're getting 2025 off to a stellar start with one of the greats of the writing world! Author Jonathan Maberry is a NYT bestseller and 5-time Bram Stoker Award winner. He's the creator of the Pine Deep Trilogy, V-Wars, Rot and Ruin and of course, the Joe Ledger series among many others. In our first episode of the new year, Jonathan talks about “Burn to Shine,” the 14th book in the Joe Ledger series. In this book, a covert group is infiltrating the world's most secure bio-weapons research sites. All across the country, people are acting as human ‘disease bombs' by infecting themselves and walking into public places. And heavily-armed groups of illegal private soldiers are massing for some unknown strike. Old enemies are rising and joining forces to hit Joe and his team with one devastating blow after another. What is the end game for all of this madness and terror? Outnumbered, outmaneuvered, and outgunned, Joe Ledger has to find a way back from the fires of grief in order to make a stand between these enemies and millions of potential innocent lives. But Joe has allies, too. His team, the vicious fighters of Arklight, and friends who may or may not be entirely human. Sounds pretty cool, doesn't it? Jonathan, Curtis and Max talk all about the new book, the fights awaiting RTI and some callbacks to characters in past books. Jonathan also talks about Joe Ledger, what defines this character, and how his trauma over the years has shaped him. We learn what keeps in the fight and why after all these years, he has no plans to back down. We also talk about the big news that the Joe Ledger series has been optioned by Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick movies to be optioned for TV development. Jonathan talks about how he and Chad met and the process of working together. We dive into potential actors to play Joe and where we are at in the production process. “Rot and Ruin,” his young adult zombie series, is in advanced development by Alcon Entertainment and we go into how that has come along. After all these years, working in novels, comics, and much more, one would think that Jonathan Maberry has done it all, and we ask about his “Mount Everest” accomplishments and what else he wants to do in his career.
