253: The Scientist Who Helped Rewrite America's Dietary Guidelines Tells All - Ty Beal

The science of what to eat has never been clearer. The problem was never the biology — it was everything else. Dr. Ty Beal, a global nutrition scientist who helped author the new U.S. Dietary Guidelines, has spent his career mapping where modern diets fail and why they keep failing. His Nutritional Value Score ranked foods with a rigor that finally puts organ meats in their proper place, calls out the grain mythology for what it is, and confirms what many already suspect: ultra-processed food is systematically, measurably eroding human health worldwide. But knowing what to eat and actually eating it are two very different problems. Dr. Beal doesn't just explain the gap — he names the machinery keeping it open. And despite decades of food industry interference in policy, he's cautiously, specifically optimistic. The question he can't fully answer yet is the hardest one: knowing what we know, why haven't things changed?BIG IDEAWe have enough science to know what to eat — the remaining obstacle is not biology, it's the economics, politics, and behavioral engineering working against it.Ty Beal Contact InfoDr. Ty Beal discussed the development of the Nutritional Value Score (NVS), his role on the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Scientific Review Group, and the critical need to prioritize whole, minimally processed foods over ultra-processed options. The conversation revealed broad agreement that ultra-processed foods and refined carbohydrates are the primary dietary issue in the U.S., while nutrient deficiencies remain widespread globally and domestically. TyBeal.comRealFood.govNutrient-Lab.comSocial Media: @TyBealPhDSend Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. We live in challenging and difficult times. There's a growing secularism in which there are many who have turned their back on God saying we don't need Him. As a result, there's an escalation of every man doing that which is right in his own eyes. Immorality is rampant, there has been horrendous crime, the level of fraud is completely off the charts, marriages and families are fractured, children have been turning against their parents, and parents against their children. The Apostle Paul told Timothy as recorded in II Timothy 3:13, "But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived." Instead, he reminded Timothy of his having learned the holy Scriptures to make him, "...wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." He reminded Timothy that the Scriptures are inspired by God and they tell us what is right, what is not right, how to get right and how to stay right. He told Timothy to preach the Word, to proclaim God's Word. Most marketers believe brand purpose drives growth. The data says otherwise. In this episode of The Sharp Cut, we take on one of marketing's most widely accepted ideas and put it under a microscope. Drawing on research from the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, Peter Field's IPA databank analysis, and perspectives from Mark Ritson and Roger Martin, we unpack a simple but uncomfortable truth:Brand purpose works… rarely. We explore why purpose has become so dominant despite weak commercial evidence, how industry incentives have turned it into a “comfort blanket,” and why the outliers like Patagonia and Dove don't translate to most brands.Along the way, we break down:The “say–do gap” between what consumers claim and how they actually buyWhy most purpose strategies show little to no impact on market shareThe hidden downside of poorly executed purpose campaignsHow purpose often replaces the harder work of real positioningThe three conditions required for purpose to actually work (and why most brands don't meet them)This is not a takedown for the sake of it. It's a reframing.Because the real question isn't whether purpose is good or bad. It's whether your organization has earned the right to use it.If not, you may be trading growth for a story that simply sounds good.Enjoy the show!TakeawaysConsumers often express a desire for brands with purpose, but this doesn't always translate to purchasing behavior.Brand purpose has become an unfalsifiable idea in marketing, often lacking robust evidence. The say-do gap highlights the difference between consumer sentiment and actual buying decisions.Purpose campaigns can generate emotional engagement but may not lead to increased market share. Most brands adopting purpose strategies do not see meaningful commercial outcomes. The effectiveness of purpose campaigns varies significantly based on execution quality.Patagonia and Dove are often cited as successful purpose-driven brands, but their models are not easily replicable.Real purpose requires genuine commitment and often involves sacrifices.Purpose can enhance employee satisfaction and brand loyalty, but it is not a direct marketing strategy. The industry often conflates purpose with marketing effectiveness, leading to misconceptions about its value.Chapters:00:00 - Introduction02:29 - The Evolution of Purpose in Marketing06:31 - Research Findings on Brand Purpose10:51 - The Complexity of Purpose Campaigns14:40 - The Outlier Problem: Patagonia and Dove20:00 - Understanding the Value of Purpose23:16 - Conclusion: The Reality of Brand PurposeReferencesTait, V., Beal, V., Dawes, J., & Sharp, B. 300 episodes. 9 years. And for this one, we're flipping the script! Chris is hijacking the podcast and hosting, and I'm in the guest chair for the first time. This felt like the perfect way to mark a milestone of one of my favorite parts of my job. The podcast will turn nine years old this summer, and looking back at who I was when I recorded episode one versus who I am sitting here at episode 300 is… a lot. Chris asks me the questions I usually ask other people, and naturally, it gets deep fast (including some of the most honest thoughts I've probably ever shared about the fitness industry).   Here's what we get into: What I believed about my purpose 9 years ago that was completely wrong, and why I'm grateful it was The shadow side of being "10 toes down" and how bodybuilding taught me to recognize my edge before I fly over it How I transitioned from competitor identity to high-standard lifestyle fitness (and why it took 3 full years) Self-awareness: where it started, how social media criticism shaped it, and the difference between healthy self-questioning and keeping yourself small In-groups and why niche communities are powerful until they forget they overlap The body positivity over-correction that silenced great fat loss coaches and gave the microphone to terrible ones Why fitness professionals who use fat people as clickbait are bad at marketing (and bad at their jobs) The "skinny tok" trend and how over-correction in the fitness space helped it play out in our specific niche Do people actually want to change, or do they want to feel like the kind of person who wants to change? The "chocolate chip in the cookie of the world" and why you don't have to change the world to change lives   First and foremost: thank you. Whether you've been here since 2017 or you just found the show, thank you for making this possible. 300 episodes in nine years. I haven't been perfect, but I've been consistently consistent. And if there's one thing I can encourage you to do: if you have something you love, something you're passionate about, something you think you can make an impact doing, just go do it. It would be an insult to me and however many hours you've spent listening to this show if you didn't. -- This episode is brought to you by AX3 Life. DescriptionPicture a marketing world flipped upside down: Where heavy buyers aren't your golden goose, where loyalty programs might be missing the point, and where the brands you think are exceptional actually follow surprisingly predictable patterns. Dr. Nicole Hartnett, senior marketing scientist at the world-renowned Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, joins Marc and V to demolish some of marketing's most sacred assumptions with cold, hard data. The Ehrenberg-Bass Institute is the world's largest centre for research into marketing and Dr. Nicole Hartnett has won the Market Research Society (MRS) Award for the best paper published by the International Journal of Market Research in 2022. Her groundbreaking research "When Brands Go Dark" analyzed 365 US brands from 22 consumer goods categories that stopped advertising for at least one year, revealing that brands experienced average sales declines of 16% after the first year, 25% after two years, and 36% after three years. In this episode, you'll hear Nicole explain why most customer bases are dominated by light buyers who contribute roughly 40-50% of sales, how the Double Jeopardy law proves that big brands don't just have more customers but also slightly more loyal ones, and why mental and physical availability matter more than differentiation. She breaks down the difference between repertoire and subscription markets, reveals why advertising effects are "spread out really thinly over time" like "hitting them with a feather," and shares the surprising patterns that hold true across everything from coffee purchases to B2B software. This isn't theoretical—it's the kind of evidence-based marketing science that's transformed how the world's biggest brands actually grow, backed by decades of empirical research that challenges everything you thought you knew about customer loyalty and brand building.Timestamps00:00: Welcome and introducing Dr. Nicole Hartnett from Ehrenberg-Bass Institute03:04: Defining repertoire vs subscription markets and loyalty patterns08:40: The Double Jeopardy law explained - why smaller brands suffer twice16:16: Light vs heavy buyers - who really drives brand growth?26:50: Mental and physical availability as growth drivers29:30: Reach vs frequency - the advertising convex response function36:45: "When Brands Go Dark" research findings on advertising cessation46:00: What makes great advertising - Old Spice campaign breakdown54:12: Distinctive assets and brand identity management systemsReferencesPrimary SourceHartnett, N., Gelzinis, A., Beal, V., Kennedy, R., & Sharp, B. We're back with everyone's favorite guest! Chris is on the show again, and this time we went deep on something we haven't talked about in a while: fitness. Not just the training-and-macros side, but what fitness actually builds in you as a person. Because here's one thing I FIRMLY believe: if you're doing fitness right, it carries over into every other area of your life. Your career, your relationships, your resilience, how you show up when things get hard. This episode is raw, unfiltered, and honestly one of the most real conversations Chris and I have ever had on the show. We get into some hot-take territory: the "halo effect" and why physical attractiveness actually matters for influence, why being offended usually says more about you than the person who offended you, what it really takes to go from "okay" fitness to exceptional fitness, and why most people quit right when things are supposed to feel the hardest. We cover a lot of ground: The underdog benefits of pursuing fitness at a high level, and why it's a crash course in  learning how to overcome hard things Why "it's the challenges you choose that prepare you for the ones you don't" The halo effect: how physical attractiveness unconsciously shapes how people perceive and receive you, and why that's not just cultural, it's in part human nature My experience gaining 70+ pounds from breast implant illness and how people treated me completely differently The difference between wanting the idea of a result vs. wanting it badly enough to change who you are Why social media has warped people's perception of what exceptional fitness actually requires The case for starting with a "sprint" period and how it builds trust, motivation, and momentum Why you can't eat intuitively if your intuition is broken The "million dollar body goals on a minimum wage mindset" problem Identity change: why changing what you do isn't enough, who you are has to change too I also get really personal in this one about my mom… watching her go through cancer, hip replacements, broken bones, and an incredibly demanding job, and still getting up at 4am every single morning to take care of herself at a high level. That's where my resilience comes from. That's the example I had. And I think everyone needs that reminder that even when you can't see the results changing, choosing to make no choices is choosing to go backwards. This one's gonna fire you up. Share it with your group chat, your gym partner, your friend who needs the push. - For the high-achieving hot girls that want to recover better, support glowier skin, and promote longevity through better cellular health, get up to 39% off Mitopure Gummies with code EMDUNC and make wellness easier than ever. How do we actually define “healthy food”? And how is it possible that processed, sugary cereals like Lucky Charms score higher than natural foods like eggs and meat in some food scoring systems?Dr. Bret Scher sits down with Dr. Ty Beal to explore a newly developed nutritional value scoring system designed to better reflect nutrient density, bioavailability, and chronic disease risk.Unlike many existing systems that can produce confusing or counterintuitive rankings, this approach aims to take a more comprehensive and transparent look at what makes food truly nourishing. In this interview, you'll learn:Why many popular food scoring systems fall shortWhat “nutrient density” really means and why it's more complex than it soundsHow bioavailability, protein quality, and nutrient diversity factor into food qualityThe role of ultra-processing, fiber, omega-3s, and nutrient ratios in shaping health outcomesWhy animal-source foods like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy can play an important role in a healthy dietHow this system can be adapted to different dietary patterns, including plant-based, omnivorous, and ketogenic approachesDr. Beal also shares the challenges of developing a system like this, from navigating scientific trade-offs to facing intense peer review, and why transparency and flexibility are essential when translating nutrition science into real-world tools.Importantly, this scoring system offers a framework to help individuals, clinicians, and policymakers better understand food quality within the context of overall dietary patterns and metabolic health. Rather than relying on overly simplistic labels like “good” or “bad,” tools like this can help guide more informed, personalized decisions.

A subpoena from the Department of Justice isn't just paperwork, it's a powerful tool that can drain resources, intimidate providers, and threaten patient care.  In this eye-opening episode of Succeed In Medicine, host Dr. Bradley Block welcomes back Dr. Crystal Beal, along with Adrian Levitt from the ACLU of Washington. In June 2025, Dr. Beal's small private practice received one of over 20 identical DOJ subpoenas targeting providers of gender-affirming care for adolescents. While large institutions like Boston Children's, Seattle Children's, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia also received subpoenas, the impact on a solo practitioner is uniquely daunting. Dr. Beal describes the anti-climactic moment the subpoena arrived via their accountant and the immediate decision to fight it with pro bono support from the ACLU, Arnold & Porter, and Perkins Coie. The conversation unpacks the broader context: the Supreme Court's decision in United States v. Skrmetti, executive actions, funding cuts, and the federal government's stated goal of ending gender-affirming care for minors. Adrian explains how the DOJ is using the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) in a novel way, traditionally applied to drug manufacturers, to investigate individual physicians. The subpoena demanded extensive records, including patient names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, training materials, and communications with pharmaceutical reps. Throughout the episode, they emphasize their ethical obligation as a physician to provide evidence-based, life-saving care and reflect on the deeper moral questions raised by this moment in history. Three Actionable Takeaways: Know your rights and secure legal support early: If you receive a government subpoena or face regulatory pressure, contact organizations like the ACLU or the Abortion Defense Network immediately. Do not assume you must comply right away. Document and practice ethically, but prepare for scrutiny: Continue providing medically necessary, evidence-based care while understanding that political targeting of certain specialties is increasing. Build relationships with legal counsel before crises hit. Speak up and combat misinformation: Physicians have a unique platform in their communities. Learn about gender-affirming care if it's within your scope, talk openly with colleagues and patients, and stand against efforts to criminalize or restrict legitimate medical practice. If you're tired of dull medical lectures, tune in for real-world lessons we should have learned in med school! This episode almost didn't happen.   Within 12 hours before recording, our family dog Logan passed away, on top of what has already been one of the hardest starts to a year I can remember, both personally and professionally.   But that's exactly why Chris and I decided to sit down and have this conversation anyway. Because that's what resilience actually is: not waiting until you feel ready, but showing up in the middle of the mess.   In this episode, Chris and I go deep on what resilience really means, the difference between general resilience and grit, why modern culture is quietly eroding our tolerance for discomfort, and how to actually build the mental and emotional muscle to keep going when it feels like life keeps throwing punches.   Chris brings his framework on controllability and time horizons, we talk about the hero's journey versus the victim's story, why reactivity is not resilience, the importance of intentional rest, and why the people you choose to surround yourself with might be the most important resilience decision you make.   This one is raw, unfiltered, and recorded in real time through real pain. Cybersecurity Distribution and Shared Risk Models: Interview with Jason Beal of Exclusive Networks

Business of Tech

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2026 19:15

The episode centers on the evolving responsibility and risk allocation within cybersecurity distribution, with particular focus on Exclusive Networks' approach. Jason Beal, as president of Exclusive Networks North America, outlines their emphasis on a technical workforce, maintaining a 1:3 ratio of engineers to sales representatives. This structure is positioned to address the increasing complexity of cybersecurity and the demands faced by service provider partners, aiming to support solution integration and customer needs while clarifying each party's liability. Supporting this structure, Jason Beal identifies the role of the distributor as both an extension and enabler for MSPs and IT services companies. Distributors are expected to supplement partners' capabilities—whether technical, financial, or operational—without assuming technology failure risk, which remains with the original technology vendors. Discussion of shared responsibility models also distinguishes between sales success (customer adoption, retention) and risk management. Recent developments in cyber insurance are cited as having reduced the direct risk burden on MSPs, shifting much of the liability away from service providers toward technology creators, albeit within contractually defined limits. Adjacent to cybersecurity, the conversation addresses skill and adoption gaps prompted by rapid technical innovation, specifically referencing artificial intelligence (AI). Jason Beal quantifies educational efforts by highlighting a collaboration with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which has seen 100 students engaged to help address workforce shortfalls in cybersecurity and AI. Additionally, academic experience informs the importance of modernizing IT operations curricula to better reflect current business challenges, such as cloud, AI, and global supply chain impacts. For MSPs and IT service providers, implications include the growing necessity to audit core competencies and allocate resources strategically, leveraging distributors not just for sourcing products but for specialized expertise, integration, and operational support. Risk mitigation remains tied to understanding contract language, vendor accountability, and developments in cyber insurance. The pace of AI and other technology adoption requires continuous education and careful evaluation of both operational risk and the practical limitations of solutions promoted by the channel and distribution partners.

Re-Release: The Most Nutrient-Dense Foods in the World & The Dangers of Micronutrient Deficiency with Ty Beal

How did Lucky Charms end up scoring "healthier" than eggs on the Tufts Food Compass, and what does that say about modern nutrition advice? If you've ever found yourself confused by food nutrient rankings like this, this episode is for you. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Ty Beal, a global nutrition researcher known for bringing real nuance to the most polarizing food debates (animal foods, ultra-processed foods, vegetable oils, saturated fat… yes, all of it!). Ty breaks down what nutrient density actually means, why micronutrient deficiencies are far more common than most people realize (even in high-income countries), and why we can't "fortify our way" out of poor diet quality. He also explains the thinking behind his global nutrient-density rating system, built around the nutrients people are most likely to be missing, and adjusted for bioavailability. You'll learn: Why "quick energy" foods can look healthy on paper… while leaving your body undernourished The surprising prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies—and why they matter for energy, cognition, and long-term health What most nutrient-rating systems miss (and why ultra-processed foods can score absurdly high) The top nutrient-dense foods to keep stocked in your kitchen Why the food matrix matters, and why fortified nutrients aren't equivalent to nutrients in whole foods Ty's balanced take on saturated fat, red meat, and the often-unspoken truth about nutrition science A practical look at what Ty actually eats to optimize nutrient density (without being dogmatic) If you're tired of black-and-white nutrition advice and want a smarter, more grounded way to think about food quality, this episode will help you cut through the noise and focus on what actually supports long-term health. In this episode, my fiance (!!!) Chris and I sit down for a real-time conversation about stress testing relationships: what it looks like in real time, why it matters, and how strong partnerships are built because of pressure, not without it. We're opening up in real time about what happens when you add layers of complexity to a relationship (and in our case, integrating Chris into my business) and how that kind of transition exposes communication gaps, leadership blind spots, emotional responsibility, and implicit/silent expectations. This conversation applies far beyond romantic relationships. We break down how stress testing shows up in friendships, family dynamics, business partnerships, and teams, and why relationships that never experience conflict often aren't deep enough to grow.   In this episode, we cover: What "stress testing" a relationship actually means Why conflict-free relationships often lack depth Emotional responsibility vs emotional dumping Task conflict vs personal conflict Emotional flexibility and regulation in partnerships Leadership differences in relationships and teams Explicit vs implicit social contracts Releasing control and building trust Why shared vision matters more than harmony How to stress-test relationships before the stakes are high   For the high-achieving hot girls that want to recover better, support glowier skin, and promote longevity through better cellular health, get 20% off your first order of Mitopure and make wellness easier than ever.
