Film journalist and filmmaker Nev Pierce joins me to discuss Mank, David Fincher's latest film which is now available to watch on Netflix and in select cinemas. Following screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay for Citizen Kane, the film takes a look at Hollywood and politics. Me and Nev discuss the film's analysis of Hollywood liberalism, what it has to say about the idea of the auteur, how Fincher made it feel like an old classic and whether it really does have anything to do with Citizen Kane.

From talking representation in modern cinema, to discussing Jim Broadbent's bum, you can't say that this week's Empire Podcast doesn't cover all the bases. Or whatever they say in cricket. In the podbooth, Chris Hewitt is joined by Terri White, Ben Travis, and Nev Pierce to talk about a great many things, from Henry Cavill's possible departure from the DCEU to Terri's desire to open a pub. They also tackle a listener's question, and there's an extended reviews section in which they tackle Crazy Rich Asians, The Predator, and King Of Thieves. And any budding filmmakers should listen to Nev talk about how he is forging a career as a director. Then, Chris talks to Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Wu, and King Of Thieves duo Michael Caine and Ray Winstone about a wide range of subjects. Includes: Chris trying, and failing, to pluck up the courage to do a Michael Caine impression in front of Actual Michael Caine, and the single greatest name drop in Empire Podcast history. Enjoy.
Director Neville Pierce and editor Jim Page chat about Nev's newly released directed short films Bricks, Ghosted and Lock In, all starring well known names including Jason Flemyng, Alice Lowe and Ray Panthaki to name a few and collaborating with Jim who edited them all. We discuss Nev's writing for Empire Magazine (where he's a contributing editor) and learning from watching David Fincher on set with his actors while interviewing him for Total Film and after interviewing Jack Nicholson thinking can it get better than this, decided to make the leap to being a filmmaker himself. Fincher read one of his scripts and liked it and that is surely worthy of making the switch. We also discuss how important it is to have rapport with your editor who can be "a less pressured second director", Getting named cast attached to your shorts and raising finance.
