Back to shady, Jared Kushner quietly met with Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries to discuss working together on housing and cost of living, which suggests the White House privately expects Democrats to win the House majority in November. And finally, a wildfire near Reno has burned over 13,000 acres with zero containment, putting 42,000 people under evacuation orders including two hospitals, with 40 additional fires burning across Nevada simultaneously. Na podzim bude jasno o tom, jak se změní financování veřejnoprávních médií. „Bitva o televizi a rozhlas je o tom, kam má směřovat tahle země a jestli vítěz bere vše a může si dělat, co chce,“ říká moderátor ČT Martin Řezníček. Vláda Andreje Babiše (ANO) má jasno v tom, že chce zrušit současný model veřejnoprávních médií. Koncesionářské poplatky má nahradit financování ze státního rozpočtu. Konkrétní návrh, o kterém by poslanci měli jednat už na podzim, ale známý není. „Do dneška nevíme, co přesně v tom návrhu bude. A bude záležet na každém slovu, na každé čárce. Bude to bitva o cizelování každého slovíčka. Ale že něco chtějí udělat, je naprosto jasné. A vsadil bych si na to, že i udělají,“ odhaduje jedna z hlavních tváří České televize, moderátor Událostí Martin Řezníček, který byl hostem podcastu Mediální cirkus. Veřejnoprávně Zaměstnanci ČT i Českého rozhlasu plány vlády kritizují a bojí se o ohrožení nezávislosti. Politici podle nich nepřekládají dostatečné pojistky dalšího nezávislého fungování obou médií. Na Kavčích Horách i na Vinohradech proto vznikla protestní akce Veřejnoprávně a proběhla už i první výstražná stávka. Řezníček součástí iniciativy Veřejnoprávně není, kolegy ale podporuje. „Jsem ochoten zajít daleko,“ říká k tomu. Snahu změnu financování bere jako snahu o omezení nezávislosti veřejnoprávních médií, i když politici tvrdí opak. „Nebyl jsem přímo u toho, ale slyšel jsem, že i koaliční politici jsou schopní neformálně říci v Poslanecké sněmovně, že vlastně nejde o financování veřejnoprávních médií, že jde jenom o zpravodajství, aby fungovalo lépe ve prospěch vládnoucí většiny. Když vám tohle někdo přizná jako koaliční politik, tak si pak říkáte: ‚Opravdu vám jde o blaho téhle země?‘“ říká Řezníček a pokračuje: „Jedna věc je, co vám politici řeknou v rozhovoru. Druhá, jak útočí téměř denně na sociálních sítích, na tiskových konferencích vlády. A jak od těchto politiků máte potom brát jejich tvrzení, že jim nejde o oslabení televize a rozhlasu, když na ně permanentně útočí?“ Boj za poplatky nezávislost neohrožuje Řezníček kromě moderování zastává v televizi řadu funkcí. Je zástupcem šéfredaktora zpravodajství, šéfem zahraniční redakce a také šéfem moderátorů. V letech 2012 až 2017 byl zpravodajem ČT ve Spojených státech amerických. I když se zaměstnanci televize do bitvy o poplatky veřejně vložili, podle Řezníčka to nijak neovlivňuje jeho práci, fungování redakce ani nezávislost zpravodajství. „Nemám pocit, že by tam docházelo k nějakému ohrožení editoriální nezávislosti. Rozhodně nikdo neříká: ‚Tohle budeme hrát, tohle nebudeme hrát z toho důvodu, že to někomu uškodí nebo někomu pomůže.‘ Vůbec nic takového se tam neděje,“ tvrdí. A ovlivněn prý rozhodně není ani on sám. „Nestalo se mi jedinkrát za dobu kariéry, kdy jsem moderoval Události, komentáře, nebo jsem potom zastupoval, když odešel Václav Moravec, v nedělní debatě, že bych nepoložil otázku jenom proto, že bych se bál, jak to dopadne s televizí nebo s rozhlasem. To bych se ráno nepodíval sám na sebe do zrcadla.“ Kritika od Andreje Babiše Sám Řezníček je častým terčem kritiky politiků. Andrej Babiš ho ještě jako šéf opozice opakovaně kritizoval i od sněmovního řečnického pultíku. Nemůže mu odpustit prezidentskou debatu, kterou Řezníček moderoval v lednu 2023 právě mezi Babišem a Petrem Pavlem. Andrej Babiš na debatu tehdy přišel bez ohlášení na poslední chvíli. „S Andrejem Babišem jsem od té prezidentské debaty nijak nekomunikoval. Nevím, co si o mně myslí. Asi to nebude nic hezkého. Ale můžu soudit jenom z jeho veřejných vystoupení v Poslanecké sněmovně, kde jsem se dostal, nemyslím, že úplně právem, do stejné skupiny lidí, jako je Miroslav Kalousek a někteří ostatní, kde, když je příležitost kopnout do České televize, tak kopne,“ říká k tomu populární moderátor a pokračuje: „Ale útoky od populistů mě se nijak nedotýkají. Opravdu ne. A možná mě ta prezidentská debata, nejen průběh prezidentské debaty, ale to, co tomu těsně předcházelo, a potom hlavně co následovalo, možná nějak zocelilo. Snažím se na svůj tým přenášet klid,“ říká ve Studiu N dočasně jmenovaná ředitelka Olga Kotková. Dočasné vedení galerie přijala podle svých slov i proto, aby zabránila další nejistotě. Někteří kolegové ji prý varovali před scénářem, který by připomínal vývoj kulturních institucí na Slovensku. „Nejrůznější kolegyně a kolegové mi říkali: Běž do toho, abys zabránila slovenské cestě,“ tvrdí. Stabilita je podle jejích slov důležitá nejen pro lidi uvnitř galerie, ale i pro její fungování v zahraničí. „Galerie potřebuje mít stabilitu, aby byla předvídatelným partnerem. Národní galerie podle ní funguje s výrazně menšími prostředky než srovnatelné zahraniční instituce. „Peníze, které mají ve Vídni na vitrínu, máme my na celou expozici,“ říká. Nedostatek peněz se podle ní promítá i do pracovních podmínek zaměstnanců: „Platy tam nejsou velké. Máme štěstí, že většina zaměstnanců a zaměstnankyň jsou lidé, kteří mají svoji práci rádi. Jsou to srdcaři. Jsou ochotni pracovat o víkendech zadarmo, protože věří v to, že pracují pro kulturu. Prezident podle něj využil prostředek, který právo předpokládá a obrátil se na soud, jenž má ústavu vykládat. Označovat jeho rozhodnutí za puč podrývá důvěru veřejnosti k Ústavnímu soudu. Odmítá také tvrzení, že jde o „Pavlův soud“ jen proto, že část soudců jmenoval současný prezident. Soudci jsou podle něj svou rolí zavázáni spíš k tomu, „aby mu byli nevděční“. Kritizuje i celkový způsob, jakým Macinka o prezidentovi mluví - například jako o „soudruhu prezidentovi“. „Takhle by se někdo veřejně neměl chovat asi k nikomu,“ říká Kysela. Politici by podle něj měli ve stále polarizovanější společnosti spíš tlumit vášně a ubírat pod kotlem, ne dál přitápět. „Společenské formy nejsou bezvýznamné, protože nám právě umožňují být spolu,“ dodává. Kriticky hodnotí také zákon, který má prezidentovi odebrat část pravomocí při jmenování diplomatů. „Málokdy se vám podaří přijmout nebo napsat zákon, který je tak evidentně protiústavní jako tenhle,“ varuje. Ve vztahu k prezidentovi v něm vidí „v jisté míře mstu, v jisté míře šikanu“. Kompetenční spory ale mohou být užitečné: bez nich podle Kysely v české politice často vyhrává ten, kdo odmítne jednat. Když jsem měla někde zakřičet, připadalo mi to nepřirozené, protože to ze svého života neznám.“ Rozhovor se ale netočí jen kolem filmu. Tomicová otevřeně přiznává, že ji zneklidňuje současná atmosféra kolem kultury. „Co se děje v kultuře, vnímám nejvíc. Mám strach. Snaží se kabinet jen natahovat čas?Hostem Ptám se já byl předseda Senátu Miloš Vystrčil (ODS). Prezident Petr Pavel se v pondělí vydal na jednání koaliční vlády ANO, SPD a Motoristů se záměrem vyjasnit si pozice ohledně klíčových zahraničních cest ústavních činitelů.Po schůzce ocenil, že ho vláda schválila do čela delegace na Valné shromáždění OSN, které se bude v září konat v New Yorku. Podle vyjádření Hradu se Pavel zároveň „v zájmu prezidentem preferovaného kooperativního vztahu s vládou“ rozhodl přistoupit na posun termínu (na 22. června), ve kterém chce kabinet oznámit podobu delegace na červencový summit NATO v Ankaře. O složení delegace na alianční summit se prezident pře s kabinetem Andreje Babiše (ANO) bezvýsledně už několik měsíců. Pavel na své účasti na summitu trvá. Má také připravenou kompetenční žalobu pro případ, že ho vláda do delegace nezařadí. Chápal by to totiž jako omezování svých pravomocí. Premiér už dříve řekl, že by prezident součástí delegace být neměl, protože české výdaje na obranu by měl na summitu obhajovat kabinet.Do sporu s vládou se kvůli zahraniční delegaci dostal také druhý nejvyšší ústavní činitel státu. Koalice odmítla poskytnout vládní letadlo šéfovi Senátu Miloši Vystrčilovi a zástupcům z řad podnikatelů, kultury a univerzit pro cestu na Tchaj-wan. Premiér to zdůvodnil tím, že by to mohlo být vnímáno jako oficiální podpora Tchaj-wanu, která by mohla poškodit české obchodní zájmy v Číně. To Vystrčil odmítl. Nakonec absolvoval let komerční linkou. Doprovázela ho čtyřicetičlenná podnikatelská delegace, další desítka se připojila na Tchaj-wanu.Podle Vystrčila by pomohlo, kdyby se opět obnovila komunikace o zahraniční politice mezi nejvyššími představiteli Česka. „To vyloženě dnes chybí. Jak při plánování zahraničních cest, ale třeba když se teď bavíme o summitu v Ankaře, tak předtím bude summit předsedů parlamentů jednotlivých zemí v Istanbulu. A měli bychom si říkat, co tam budeme prosazovat, jakým způsobem budeme připravovat půdu pro Českou republiku,“ řekl šéf Senátu v Ptám se já. „Já Tomio Okamurovi nedokážu vysvětlit, že není dobré, aby tam (v Istanbulu) říkal, že máme vystupovat z NATO. Protože má přece názor, že bychom neměli být v NATO. V tom by měl koordinační roli sehrát ministr zahraničních věcí. Nevím, co tam bude (Tomio Okamura) říkat. Marek Hlavica má za sebou několik kariér: už v druhé polovině osmdesátých let byl úspěšným novinářem v tehdy legendárním Mladém světě, pak ho chvíli řídil jako ředitel, před koncem tisíciletí se přesunul do světa komunikace a reklamy. V ní končil jako konzultant, a dnes je, řečeno nehezkým slovem, papalášem hned ve dvou profesních organizacích. Ale aby jeho seniorská léta nebyla nudná a úřednická, je zároveň aktivním a taky uznávaným muzikantem. Plus tedy ještě právě vydává svou první knihu.O tom všem jsme spolu mluvili. A taky o tom, proč se mu spousta důležitých věcí v života podařila na druhý pokus. Ne na první nebo na třetí, ale nejčastěji právě na ten druhý. Plus jsem se ho zeptal, kým by chtěl být, kdyby dostal možnost žít ještě jeden život. Odpověď vás možná překvapí, jako mě.Povídání s Markem Hlavicou mě bavilo, asi proto, že se známe dlouho, možná třicet let, ale nikdy jsme spolu takto důkladně nemluvili. A tak jsem napjatě poslouchal, když popisoval, jak jednou přišel omylem v Ostravě na jiný koncert, než si vybral - a byl z toho jeden z největších hudebních zážitků. (AJFU / Wikimedia) A newly filed federal lawsuit alleges two Las Vegas hotel-casinos enabled years of sex trafficking tied to convicted sex offender Nathan Chasing Horse. The civil complaint was filed on behalf of two survivors, and names Boyd Gaming, Station Casinos, and other entities as defendants. The suit alleges trafficking occurred at properties including Cannery Casino & Hotel and Santa Fe Station Hotel and Casino between 2014 and 2022. According to the lawsuit, Chasing Horse used his position as a self-described spiritual leader to manipulate and control women through coercion, isolation, and threats of violence. The complaint alleges the women were forced into commercial sex acts while hotel staff ignored visible warning signs. Attorney Alex Marcinko represents the survivors. “People like Nathan Chasing Horse don't operate in a vacuum. He doesn't exist without other entities allowing him to.” The lawsuit alleges hotel staff repeatedly rented rooms to Chasing Horse despite signs the women were being controlled and exploited. It also claims the hotels financially benefited from the repeated stays. “There was obvious signs of the torment these women were undergoing at these hotels, and nothing was done.” Chasing Horse was convicted earlier this year on sex trafficking and sexual abuse charges and sentenced in April to 37 years to life in prison. The lawsuit was filed under the federal Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act, which allows survivors to pursue civil claims against businesses accused of knowingly benefiting from trafficking ventures. Marcinko says the case could also raise broader questions about accountability within the hotel industry. “The hotel industry turns a blind eye to the human suffering in sex trafficking. It happens far too often.” The lawsuit seeks damages for the physical, emotional, and psychological harm the survivors say they endured. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka, Alaska has a unique program that brings Alaska Airlines employees — known as “glam fairies” — to help students from villages across Alaska get ready for prom, as KCAW's Hope McKenney reports. For the past fourteen or so years, volunteers with the Prom Prince and Princess program have helped Mt. Edgecumbe students get glammed up for prom. They do hair, nails, and makeup, provide jewelry, shoes, corsages, and boutonnieres, and even do alterations on the many donated suits and dresses. “So I'm really happy to be here, because I love doing hair and makeup.” Lisa Lynch is one of the many glam faeries helping in the crowded room. “So I'm happy to be able to do this for other kids whose families can't be here to help them like that.” Alonza Topkok just finished her turn in the makeup chair. “I wanted shimmer, and I wanted glitter, and that's exactly what they gave me.” She says her prom look is inspired by the 2001 Mariah Carey cult classic “Glitter”. She says it means a lot that people volunteer their time and donate clothes, makeup, and jewelry when she and her friends don't have family members nearby to help out. Freshman Andrew Adams from Mentasta Lake is hovering at the entrance to the common room with his friends Calvin and Kacin. Adams went to a middle school prom a couple of years ago, but this is his first high school prom. When asked if they are all going to go up and ask those girls to dance, Adams replied, “Maybe, yeah.” Despite some nerves, Adams and his friends eventually ask one of the volunteers to help them get ready. He began his journey in 1995 when he joined the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Explorer Program. Directly out of high school, he worked for the Las Vegas Bureau of Land Management office as a wildland firefighter on a hand crew. From 1997 to 2002, he served as a reserve firefighter in Boulder City, Nev. Ryan joined Las Vegas Fire and Rescue as a firefighter in 2002. Throughout his career, he pursued further education and training, becoming an Honor Guard member in 2003 and serving as co-commander; an LVF&R Technical Rescue Team member in 2005; and a certified paramedic in 2006. He served as an Executive Board member for Local 1285 and chaired the EMS Committee for over 10 years. In 2014, Ryan was promoted to captain, serving Battalion 1 at Station 10. Ryan was promoted to battalion chief in January 2024 and serves LVF&R Battalion 10, B-Shift. He considers being a Blue Card lead instructor an honor and is proud to represent Big Al's legacy.
