In this episode, Paul Andrews dives deep into the topic of free guitar lessons, exploring whether learning guitar from platforms like YouTube is truly “good enough” for beginners. He discusses the pros and cons of free online resources, the hidden costs attached, and why structured lessons might be the key to real progress.Key Topics CoveredCommunity UpdateRecap of the first-ever Sip and Strum event featuring “Zombie” by The Cranberries. Although there were audio issues with the event recording, the tutorial has been completely updated on the Beginner Guitar Academy website, now featuring playthroughs, slowed-down practice speeds, and backing tracks.Announcement of an upcoming live Q&A session on November 24th (9 pm GMT, 4 pm EST, 1 pm PST). Options to join live or pre-submit questions.Shout-out to community member Martin Fluke for earning a distinction in the Trinity College London performance exam. Details on how other students can pursue the exam.Main Topic: Are Free Guitar Lessons Good Enough?Advantages of free lessons: no cost, instant access, and a huge variety of content for beginners. The drawbacks of free lessons:Lack of Structure: Free lessons are generally aimed at gaining views rather than student progress. Many YouTube teachers are not trained educators, and lesson plans often lack a clear, progressive roadmap.Overwhelm and Confusion: Contradictory teaching methods and opinions can leave beginners confused. Without a reliable system, learning can feel random and ineffective.Poor Progress Tracking: There's little to no feedback or accountability with free resources, making it hard for students to recognize and correct mistakes—which often stifles progress.Hidden Marketing: Free lessons may come with advertising and may be designed to funnel viewers into paid products or courses. The value of structured guitar learning:A clear roadmap that builds skills in logical orderAccountability, community, and teacher feedbackConsistent practice and supportFeedback is crucial for identifying and fixing mistakesUsing free lessons properly:Great as supplementary resources or for inspiration and quick fixes, but shouldn't be your main learning path.Analogy: Treat structured lessons as your “main course” and free lessons as “dessert” for fun extras after you've built your foundation.Practical AdviceNew guitarists are encouraged to seek structured learning for foundational skills, then use free online lessons to spark inspiration and supplement their journey. If you feel stuck or are “spinning your wheels” with random YouTube videos, consider joining a structured program like Beginner Guitar Academy.Call to ActionReady to see the difference a structured program can make? Try out Beginner Guitar Academy for 14 days for just $1, including full access to lessons, community, and feedback.Visit beginnerguitaracademy.com to start your journey!Closing ThoughtsPaul Andrews emphasises that while free content can inspire and supplement your learning, achieving real progress on guitar requires structure, feedback, and community. He encourages listeners to balance their free online explorations with proper education for the best results.Next episode drops next Friday—make sure to tune in, keep practicing, and keep having fun with your guitar!

Talking Identity, Grit & Rebirth Through Music with ARYEL MOONIt's a Friday afternoon — my favourite time to record — that magical moment when the week is done, the fear has lifted, and you can just be—perfect timing, then, to sit down with someone who brings their own props to the party. I had a disco ball; my guest had a glowing cube. Beat that. This week on MyMusic, I'm joined by the extraordinary Aryel Moon — or should I say, Donatella, because as you'll hear, identity is a layered, shifting, powerful thing for this artist. What began as a solo project has evolved into a band: a collective of voices, roots, accents, and influences that somehow, beautifully, feel like home.In this episode, we talk about:✨ Floating roots and found belonging — from Sardinia to Bologna, Edinburgh to Balbriggan, and how accents become a map of the soul.✨ The alter ego as armour and liberation — why “ARYEL” protects “Donatella,” and how the two now coexist.✨ Falling out of music — and climbing back into it — the emotional cost of being silenced, and the spark that brought songwriting roaring back.✨ Growing up on distortion and riot grrrl — from Sonic Youth to L7 to Bikini Kill, and how Irish grit now mixes with Italian fire.✨ Why every great singer once hated their own voice — and how connection, not perfection, is the real magic.✨ The Cranberries, freedom songs, and healing — how "Dreams" helped soundtrack her rebirth.✨ The absolute necessity of funding the arts — and stuffing cash into the pockets (if they have them) of gigging musicians.✨ Their debut EP — dropping 20th November, with a launch show in Dublin on the 28th.Aryel Moon are fresh, fierce and full of heart — an alt-rock sound that is Irish in spirit, European in roots, and utterly their own.And trust me: punk is their favourite colour.Stick around to the end to hear how you can support them, buy the music, and maybe even buy the T-shirt (I've demanded one).

Cranberries are a big deal in the state of Wisconsin and harvest is now wrapping up. This year brought in a lot of variabilities for all crops grown in the state. Grant Holley is the Executive Director of the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association, and he says the rollercoaster of weather the state saw late in the season did have a bit of an impact on this year's crop.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's one of the biggest months of the year — SEMA, MCACN, and Thanksgiving! In this episode, Rick Schmidt joins Rob to tackle the real questions everyone's asking: turkey, beef, or ham? Whether you're restoring, collecting, or just daydreaming, this one's packed with laughs, insight, and muscle car wisdom. Tune in and find out: is Rick Team Turkey or Team Ham? In this episode, Paul Andrews tackles one of the most common questions among beginner guitarists: Should you start learning on an electric or acoustic guitar? Drawing from his experience, student feedback, and a recent question from a listener named Glenn, Paul dives deep into the practical differences between electric and acoustic guitars, debunks myths, and helps you figure out the best instrument to start your own guitar journey.Beginner Guitar Academy NewsMonthly Academy show roundup: Celebrating student progress, guitar-versaries, and highlights from the past month.New club blogs for each student level offer extra resources and support, including in-depth riff breakdowns and practice checklists.Upcoming events:Sip and Strum (Nov 16th): Learn a song (Zombie by The Cranberries) together, suitable for all levels, including advanced techniques and tone discussion.Live Q&A (Nov 24th): Submit questions beforehand or join live; recordings will be uploaded to the Academy and member-only podcast.Electric vs Acoustic: The BasicsAcoustic guitars are self-contained, portable, and great for rhythm and singer-songwriter styles.Electric guitars are more comfortable (lighter strings, slimmer necks), but require extra equipment like amps, cables, and headphones.Pros and ConsElectric Guitar Pros: Easier to play, versatile across genres with effects pedals, smaller neck—ideal for players with small hands.Electric Guitar Cons: Need for extra gear and a steeper learning curve for total beginners.Acoustic Guitar Pros: Simple, portable, perfect for social situations and spontaneous play.Acoustic Guitar Cons: Heavier strings, higher action, wider necks—can be tougher for beginners.Choosing the Right GuitarThe best guitar is the one that inspires you and matches your musical tastes. If you want to play Ed Sheeran or Taylor Swift, start with an acoustic; if you dream of playing Hendrix or Metallica, electric makes more sense. Both instruments teach the foundational skills of guitar playing – chords, scales, strumming, picking – and Beginner Guitar Academy's early levels apply to both. When advancing to lead guitar, effects, and tone control, an electric guitar becomes necessary.Cost & Gear TipsYou don't need to spend a lot. I dag skriver vi den 31. oktober, og det betyder jo samtidig at det er Halloween. Derfor står denne uges udsendelse i uhyggens tegn. The Cranberries, Michael Jackson, The Cure, Kate Bush, Ray Parker Jr., Olivia Rodrigo, Band Of Horses og The Specials. Playliste: The Citizens of Halloween Town - This is Halloween Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters The Specials - Ghost town Band Of Horses - Is there a ghost Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds + Kylie Minogue - Where the wild roses grow Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder on the dancefloor Talking Heads - Psycho killer Olivia Rodrigo - Vampire The Wombats - Tokyo (Vampires & wolves) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad moon rising The Cure - Lullaby Rockwell - Somebody's watching me Kate Bush - Waking the witch Ramones - Pet Sematary The Cranberries - Zombie Michael Jackson - Thriller
"The number changes, but as of the writing of this description, only 1883 songs have topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart including all its earlier versions. This week back in 1990, the first rap song topped the chart. That got me wondering how many other firsts and other interesting facts surround the top spot. Here is a list."
The Cranberries need no introduction...but we'll give you one nonetheless. Formed in Limerick Ireland in 1989 their first album came out in 1993. In 1994 and 95 their single "Zombie" was number 1 in 8 different countries. They have sold over 50 million albums worldwide and they currently have over 30 million followers on Spotify alone. They recently decided to release their 1994 MTV unplugged performance as a standalone album. Before the album is released on 11/7, Fergal Lawler founding member and drummer for The Cranberries was nice enough to stop by the show. Doc and Ferg talk about the band leading up to MTV unplugged album, the decision not to do any covers during the performance, the Cranberries performing covers, Dolores O'Riordan's unique voice, recording when the band first met, and so much more. Meanwhile on the rest of the show, Mike and Doc search for invisible numbers and a cool Todd. Send us a textEver wondered what songs get stuck in a hypnotist's head? In this musical journey, David and Matt pull back the curtain on their personal playlists, sharing the tracks that have shaped their lives and continue to move them emotionally.David takes us through his affection for what he playfully calls "faux rock bands" of the 80s—Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon—with particular fondness for "Separate Ways" and its distinctive guitar harmonics. His enthusiasm for The Doors reveals a deeper connection, having "consumed every book ever written" about the band, while his discovery of Muse years after their initial popularity demonstrates how great music finds us when we're ready for it.Matt brings a contrasting musical palette to the conversation, from Coldplay's "Clocks" (which he insists feels like a personal performance when experienced live) to electronic tracks by Spunk Shine and Shapeshifter that instantly transport him into relaxation mode after stressful workdays. His passion for Hamilton showcases how experiencing the same music from different physical perspectives—whether on Disney+ or from opposite sides of a theater—creates entirely new impressions of familiar material. What makes this episode particularly compelling is how each song selection reveals something profound about its chooser. When Matt describes Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries as having "the voice of an angel" or David explains how Earth, Wind & Fire's vocal harmonies in "Fantasy" speak to his musical training, we witness music's ability to connect with our unique experiences and emotional wiring. The conversation becomes a fascinating exploration of how we develop relationships with songs—some through technical appreciation, others through emotional association, and many through shared moments with loved ones. As streaming has changed our listening habits, their nostalgic reflections on experiencing albums from start to finish serve as a gentle reminder of what we might be missing in today's single-track world.Whether you're seeking new additions to your playlist or simply enjoy hearing passionate people discuss the music that moves them, this episode offers a window into how deeply personal our soundtracks can be. Fans have long awaited the official release of the group's legendary 1995 Unplugged set, and that wait is finally over: beginning November 7, 2025, MTV Unplugged will be available for the first time as a standalone release on vinyl, CD, and digital via Island Records/UMe. A special colored vinyl edition with alternate cover art will also be available exclusively through Complex.Originally taped on February 14, 1995 at the Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, the intimate nine-song performance aired two months later during the sixth season of MTV Unplugged. Following the release of their worldwide smash No Need to Argue, the setlist showcased the band's blend of vulnerability and power with songs like “Dreaming My Dreams,” “Ode To My Family,” “Empty,” “Zombie,” and the title track. They also revisited earlier hits like “Linger” and previewed unreleased gems “Free to Decide” and “I'm Still Remembering,” which would later appear on 1996's To The Faithful Departed.Perhaps most special is “Yesterday's Gone”, a song written by Dolores O'Riordan and Noel Hogan just one day before the show and performed only during that recording. “The only time we ever played it was for MTV,” Hogan recalls.Fergal reflected on the honor of joining the legendary Unplugged series, which previously hosted R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and The Cure:“It was a really chilled, relaxed vibe with the audience sitting on the floor. To be following in the footsteps of those artists was incredible.”Backed by Electra Strings, the quartet that had also joined them on Later with Jools Holland, The Cranberries delivered a performance critics and fans alike have deemed one of the finest in the history of the series. Publications like SPIN and Mixdown have ranked it among the best Unplugged sessions ever, while fans have clamored for its release for decades. With the anniversary reissues of No Need to Argue and the long-awaited arrival of MTV Unplugged as a standalone release, 2025 promises to be a landmark year for The Cranberries' legacy.“I'm really proud that the songs we wrote didn't need all the bells and whistles you get in the studio to sound good,” Noel shared. “They worked just as well stripped down and played acousticallwww.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. "Here is a game to play. Name as many two minute songs as you can following these rules. Only one song per group and you cannot name just punk songs. We then go one step farther and change the game to as many one minute songs as you can."
Noel Hogan, guitarist with The Cranberries, discusses their gig with guest singers at Electric Picnic over the weekend.
"A band named The Velvet Sundown had a hit a short while ago. The concern was that the band and the music were all fake. They were both fully AI generated. It is easier than you think. "This is a fun parlor game. Name a band, a song by that band and then an album from that band that are all named exactly the same. Here is an example. Bad Company by Bad Company on the album Bad Company. There are many that are close but a true Trilogy is all three exactly the same."
The conversation around the new music this summer has been a dour one. Some of the biggest songs in the country right now are downtempo stomp-clap anthems and wistful Cranberries pastiche. Even on this very show, Nate and Charlie have asked: where's the fun? As it turns out, the party (as always) is happening in hip-hop, led by a formidable influence: Pharrell.. On this episode of Switched On Pop, producer Reanna and engineer Brandon join Charlie for a tour through rap music's latest sweaty offerings, including the new album by Tyler, the Creator, Clipse's return to music, and catchphrase worthy singles by Cardi B, PLUTO, and Drake.
