SEASON 2 - EPISODE 135 - Simon Hayes - Production Sound Mixer In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with production sound mixer Simon Hayes (WICKED, LES MISERABLES, SHAUN OF THE DEAD). At 14, Simon followed his father to set to learn sound. At 15, he then won the European BMX Championship. And at 16, he quit school, immersed himself in the industry, and honed his skills during the boom times of British commercials. Simon shares how early-career nights at Soho bars led to his professional relationships with directors Guy Ritchie and Matthew Vaughn, and we discuss the lessons he learned about protecting live performances on those early films. Simon  reveals how an idea from Meryl Streep changed the approach to recording the songs of MAMMA MIA!, and he later shares his own views on the effectiveness of boom mics and radio mics. Simon also reveals how they actually recorded the live vocals of LES MISERABLES without pre-recorded backing tracks, and he reflects on how his experiences in recording studios enabled him and his team to coordinate the complex musical numbers in WICKED with seasoned recording artists and leading actresses Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Plus, Simon reveals where he hid Elphaba's radio mic. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

How can we teach our audience new storytelling rules in the middle of our story? Following on from our episodes on establishing tone through action lines and through character, this is what we have been building up to: how to pull off a tonal switch… that does not throw the audience out of the film. And, in particular, how to pull that off on the page when writers don't have framing, lighting, music, editing, etc. at our disposal? With that goal in mind, Mel and Chas dissect specific moments on the pages of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU and SWISS ARMY MAN. While there are definite craft tools identified - rhythm of action lines, varying use of unfilmmables and metaphors, establishing language patterns - the two big takeaways are: (1) pulling off a tonal shift takes a lot of setup; and (2) when the time comes, contrast on the page is key. Stuck In The Middle - A Gen X Podcast

Be kind and rewind, Slackers! This week we take a dive into cinema's cult classics - films that took the long road to legendary status. These films - think dark humored high school flicks like Heathers or demonic, medieval chaos courtesy of Army of Darkness - often stumbled at the box office, barely making a dent with opening crowds. But at Blockbuster, they found their groove, turning late-night rentals into a rite of passage for fans. The question is, what exactly makes a cult classic a cult classic? Its a combination of unforgettable characters, quotable lines, and those unexpected moments that make you question what you just watched. It's about stories that mix heart, humor, and a little madness - all the ingredients of the Gen X mindset. What makes these movies stand the test of time isn't flashy red carpet premieres and huge box office numbers but the way they kind of snuck into our lives. Some weave fairy-tale romance with clever twists, others bring vampires to the teenage coming of age story, or maybe just toss a trucker into some ancient, mystical weirdness. I mean, how do you even describe the awkward charm of a movie like Napoleon Dynamite? It's sad that streaming has replaced the local video store, where so many of us found these weird little movies, turning often overlooked releases into beloved classics. This isn't just nostalgia; it's a nod to films that took time to find their people, proving that some of the best stories don't need a red carpet - just a rewind button and a little love.

When he's not working at the electronics store, he lives with his slovenly best friend, Ed, in a small flat on the outskirts of London. The only unpredictable element in his life is his girlfriend, Liz, who wishes desperately for Shaun to grow up and be a man. When the town is inexplicably overrun with zombies, Shaun must rise to the occasion and protect both Liz and his mother. Jeremy and Sara talk about the dual nature of how well this film parodies and shows love for the zombie genre and just what makes Edgar Wright such a special director. We've got an absolute legend of British comedy in the studio today... it's Nick Frost! Joe gets very star struck, as Nick tells us how he went from being a waiter and factory worker, to starring in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and many more iconic comedy films. It also turns out he is better at scrummaging than Joe as well, and he never got a single free Cornetto after the Cornetto trilogy. It's October again--that time of year when comfort gives way to DIScomfort, the fog rolls in, the slashers sharpen their blades, and we gleefully indulge in rewatching some of our spooky season favorites! First up, we're talking about Shaun of the Dead, an Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg collaboration and the first of the Cornetto trilogy, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. This horror comedy has a Ph.D. in zombie movie trivia, and as zombie aficionados ourselves, that puts it right up our alley! We talk about the Pegg/Wright script and its many references to Romero, Carpenter, and other classic horror. We discuss the use of foreshadowing, perfectly timed music sequences, the intersection of horror and humor, the Shaun and Ed bromance, and how a zombie apocalypse is just the type of growth event Shaun needs to rattle him out of his rut. Head on down to the Winchester and give us a listen -- pints are on us!

This is our 31 days of films that have chills & thrills, but Have You Ever Seen's 3rd posting in Scary Movie Month (and our 616th episode overall) is far more funny than it is frightening. Just like Shaun Of The Dead last week, much mirth results from nitwits dealing with reanimated corpses. Mel Brooks' beloved blockbuster is a satire of the classic Universal monster story and he's got his co-writer Gene Wilder leading a fantastic cast. Gene is a riot himself in one of Ryan's Top 10 fave comedies, even if Young Frankenstein turned out to be A LITTLE less of a grin-fest than it's been in the past. The comic highlights remain some of the most-hilarious of all time though, particularly the blind man, "Puttin' On The Ritz" and just about everything Marty Feldman and Madeleine Kahn do. So play some violin to calm Peter Boyle's savage beast as you gulp down this super-duper-like-Gary-Cooper monologue about Young Frankenstein. Holiday or not, you can order from our sponsor, Sparkplug Coffee. Enjoy some with your leftover turkey! Our "HYES" promo code will save you 20% off your next order. Go to "sparkplug.coffee/hyes". The first episode in Scary Movie Month 2024 that the Ellises are doing together gets into the second leg of Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy. We covered Hot Fuzz a few years ago, but this one that put the Englishman on the map is—-to one of us—-funnier...and is his best film. As always with Wright and Simon Pegg, the flick is jammed with clever references to other movies. And in their zombie rom-com, they found the perfect pace while also finding ways to eek humour out of frightening or disgusting or even stupid situations. Nick Frost plays a horrible friend, but he's a grin-getter. Pegg is the funniest one in the cast though. So, pickle, head to the shop for an ice cream & a Coke, then make amends with your mum, your stepdad and also your girlfriend as you run the 615th edition of Have You Ever Seen under a cold tap. Sparkplug Coffee can't be purchased in jolly ol' England, but Canadians & Americans can get in on this. And they will get a 20% discount by using our "HYES" promo code. Go to "sparkplug.coffee/hyes". Tell us your thoughts about this movie or any other we've reviewed.
