Was the return to The Grid worth the wait? Resident movie screener Scotty Scoop (3.0/4.0) gives us his spoiler-free, honest review of TRON: ARES. The third installment of the sci-fi franchise sees two competing tech giants race to find the code that can make digital constructs permanent in the real world. Find out why this Jared Leto-led sequel might be "the last time" we see The Grid, and why Jeff Bridges was "criminally underutilized".
This week, the boys head to the jungle for one of Amazon Studios' first films, James Gray's “The Lost City of Z”. That's pronounced “Zed” for you British purists. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson with a beard and glasses, and Sienna Miller. It was produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B and was SOMEHOW filmed on a $30 million budget, half of which was spent flying the dailies out of the actual Amazon jungle. We get drinking with a few mini-reviews at the top, and Jeff must have started early because he recorded with his microphone facing the wrong way. IS THE THIRD TIME THE CHARM FOR A BELOVED FRANCHISE WHOSE FIRST FILM BOMBED AND WHOSE SEQUEL WAS ONLY A MODERATE BOX OFFICE SUCCESS?!??Fun Fact: the original 1982 Tron is one of Cupcake's favorite nostalgic cornerstone films. This week he forces WillDaBeast to watch the third film in the franchise: Tron: Ares. Directed by one of the co-directors of the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie and starring up and coming performers Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith and Evan Peters, veteran actors Jeff Bridges and Gillian Anderson, and starring the nearly-cancelled, gorgeous but maybe difficult to work worth and satisfy, questionable celebrity Jared Leto, Tron: Ares dazzles with sizzling CGI effects and a banging Nine Inch Nails score. For a franchise that has only offered three films in FORTY THREE YEARS (!), will this sequel revive the “was it ever there” franchise or is it time for Tron to hit the “Recycle Bin” for good? Back in the day when only the wealthy had home computers, came a revolutionary movie called “Tron” from Disney in 1982. The computer generated visual effects in it were so out of this world that the Oscars refused to nominate “Tron” because they thought using computers for visual effects was cheating. Fast forward to 2025, when a stance like that by the Oscars is blatantly moronic and we get the third movie in the “Tron” series, “Tron Ares.” As you would imagine, the visual effects are more than a little better than in 1982, but is the story, are the characters, is the plot pacing? Our main character is Ares, a soldier program, created by the Dillinger Corporation, to be created and used repeatedly by the military and also used to infiltrate the computer systems of rival companies. One of those rival companies is ENCOM, the company introduced in the original “Tron”, and the CEO of ENCOM is looking for something that'll give them the edge over the Dillinger Corporation. Ares is dispatched by Julian Dillinger, the CEO of the Dillinger Corporation to find out what ENCOM is up to but becomes confused about following his orders the deeper he gets. Is it worth going to the theater to find out what happens next? Check out this episode to find out! “Tron Ares” stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Jeff Bridges, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Sarah Desjardins. We love to pull the cork. We're talking about Hailee Steinfeld's incredible performance. We're talking about Jeff Bridges' distinctive mumbly delivery. For the first time in fifteen years (Tron Legacy, 2010), we are finally returning to The Grid. Though this time around, we are doing so with some new characters including the titular Ares (Oscar-winner Jared Leto) who is a digital soldier created by Dillinger Systems to be the ultimate "expendable" soldier to serve our military in the real world. Unfortunately to the consternation of his creator Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters), Ares is still in need of ONE code in particular to ensure that he can actually last for more than 29 minutes in the real world before deresolution. And that's where Eve Kim (Greta Lee) comes in as she's the CEO of the rival corporation ENCOM...yes the same ENCOM featured in the first two Tron films where the legendary Kevin Flynn (Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges) used to work. Guess WHO might have actual posession of this "permanence code?" As directed by Joachim Ronning (Kon-Tiki, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales) and featuring music by Nine Inch Nailes, the race for the future is ON....and this time, it spills into the real world!Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
This week, we're logging back into the Grid for Tron: Legacy — Disney's big-budget sequel that's equal parts visual feast and plot puzzle. With a soundtrack by Daft Punk, digital Jeff Bridges, and light cycles that make zero sense, this movie is definitely something to behold. We cover it all, including:
Tron Ares.I'm back with a brief episode...taking you through Tron Ares. The latest addition to the Tron universe takes us back to The Grid..starring Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges and Gillian Anderson. It's had bad reviews but wanted to get my opinions across.SPOILER ALERT!!! In anticipation for the upcoming Tron: Ares, Ryan and Dylan revisit 2010's Tron: Legacy, directed by Joseph Kosinski.

Tron: Ares (stylized as TRON: Ares) is a 2025 American science fiction action film that is the third installment in the Tron series, following Tron: Legacy (2010). Directed by Joachim Rønning, it features an ensemble cast including Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, and Gillian Anderson, with Jeff Bridges reprising his role as Kevin Flynn from the previous films.Development of a sequel to Tron: Legacy began in October 2010 by franchise creator Steven Lisberger. In March 2017, Walt Disney Pictures shifted plans toward a soft reboot with Leto playing a new character. Garth Davis was set as director in August 2020 when Wigutow was working on the script, but stepped down in January 2023. Rønning replaced him a month later. Production was expected to begin in August 2023 but was delayed by the 2023 Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Filming ultimately began in January 2024 in Vancouver and wrapped in May. Disney's sleek, sci-fi sequel is directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, and Garrett Hedlund. We break down how Daft Punk's legendary electronic soundtrack and the film's groundbreaking visual effects helped redefine the look and sound of futuristic cinema. But beneath all the neon and synths, is TRON: Legacy an underrated gem of modern sci-fi, or just a glossy reboot that never quite found its spark? When TRON: Legacy hit theaters in December 2010, Disney wasn't just reviving an old IP—they were resurrecting one of the strangest, most ambitious sci-fi concepts ever made. The original TRON from 1982 was a groundbreaking attempt to visualize the inside of a computer at a time when most people hadn't even touched one. It imagined programs as people, code as architecture, and morality as circuitry. It was visionary—and it bombed.By the 2000s, though, culture had caught up. The Matrix had turned cyberpunk into mainstream mythology, and the neon-noir look of Blade Runner had become visual shorthand for the future. Enter Joseph Kosinski—a former architect with a designer's precision—who re-engineered TRON not as a hacker fantasy, but as a digital myth about creation, perfection, and control.Garrett Hedlund plays Sam Flynn, son of Kevin Flynn, the hero from the first film, who vanished decades earlier. Sam follows a mysterious signal and is pulled into the Grid—his father's virtual world, now ruled by CLU, a digital clone obsessed with “perfection.” Within minutes, we're deep in a story that mirrors Star Wars: the fallen apprentice turned tyrant, the exiled master, the reluctant heir, and a world that must be remade. Kevin Flynn is both Obi-Wan and Yoda—haunted and withdrawn. CLU is his Darth Vader, a creation corrupted by its maker's arrogance. But the movie also borrows Matrix DNA. The Grid works like a virtual prison where sentient programs fight and dream of freedom. Quorra, played by Olivia Wilde, is the last of the “isomorphic algorithms,” lifeforms that evolved on their own—straight out of Ghost in the Shell's questions about digital souls. The film isn't about coding; it's about consciousness.Kosinski builds this world like a cathedral. Production designer Darren Gilford fills it with clean geometry and luminous voids. The suits by Michael Wilkinson and Christine Bieselin Clark refine Syd Mead's 1982 designs into sculpted futurism. And Daft Punk's score—half orchestra, half circuitry—turns the film into an electronic symphony. Even those who forgot the plot still remember that sound.Critics complained it was cold, that the script sounded like it was written by people who'd never heard of Google. My son Jonas nailed it: “This sounds like nobody who wrote it had heard of the internet.” And he's right. The film imagines computers as isolated kingdoms, not the networked web we actually live in. It's a pre-internet vision dressed in post-Matrix clothing.Yet that's what makes it fascinating. TRON: Legacy isn't really about technology—it's about fathers, sons, and the danger of mistaking perfection for love. Kevin Flynn's failure isn't technical; it's paternal. He built a world in his image and abandoned it. CLU inherited his father's obsession with order, and Sam inherited his resentment. The conflict isn't between man and machine—it's between generations.Kosinski would revisit that theme in Oblivion and Top Gun: Maverick: the architect of the system confronting the cost of control. TRON: Legacy is the prototype—a meditation on beauty, regret, and the limits of design.Fifteen years later, it feels almost prophetic. CLU's dream of a flawless system sounds uncomfortably close to the rhetoric of Silicon Valley. The movie's warning—that perfection becomes tyranny—lands harder in an age of algorithms, A.I., and curated identities. Its message is simple: imperfection is the only thing that makes us human. So tonight, as we gear up for TRON: Ares, we're putting Legacy on trial—not as a sequel that glitched, but as a digital myth that might've been too early for its own time. It's Star Wars rewritten by a coder, The Matrix without the leather, and Ghost in the Shell with a heartbeat.Load the disc. Power up the light cycles. Let's head back to the Grid.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Despite all the reasons to hate on the government, they did give us a reason to watch George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, and Jeff Bridges dropping acid in the desert while cosplaying psychic soldiers. This week, we're finding out if truth is actually dumber than fiction with The Men Who Stare at Goats. We stare deep into the third eye of government-funded weirdness, talk mind tricks, and wonder why anyone would second-guess killing goats with brainwaves as a solid use of taxpayer money. Clooney's rocking a mustache, McGregor's trying not to say “Jedi,” and Jeff Bridges is vibing through Vietnam like a barefoot guru with Pentagon backing. It's chaos with a side of hummus. We dig into psychic shenanigans, questionable soundtrack choices, and the real-life lunacy behind it all. And we can't help but hold a a heated debate about the fine art of the fart joke. Crank up the Boston, grab an energy drink, and prepare for invisible soldiers, hamsters in peril, and enough deviled egg talk to make your grandma nervous. This one's weird, loud, and probably more accurate than you'd like to believe.
