Matt and Luke board the TV Time Machine for one final time in 1999 to review 4 not so festive treats from December. Firstly, Martin Clunes stars in an off-kilter comedy drama about the inner workings of a shock TV show entitled 'Sex And Death' Then, there's the only Christmassy-sounding show, in BBC One's sort of family drama Last Christmas starring Pauline Quirke and Ray Winstone. Then, the pair examine the evolution of Graham Norton by looking back at his first Christmas Show as part of So Graham Norton on Channel 4. Lastly, the barely known comedy duo Matt Lucas and David Walliams get their first shot at TV with UK Play's Rock Profile in which the pair play over-the-top versions of Pop stars such as George Michael, the lads from Steps and Michael Jackson and his ever-loyal friend Elizabeth Taylor. Also, Matt tests Luke's music knowledge for the final time with the Christmas Chart of December 99 where Cliff Richard's The Millennium Prayer is still hanging around!

In the penultimate episode of the season, Neil sits down with friend and colleague Kat Flint-Nicol to think through British cinema. The aim was to focus on regionality, but the conversation is much-more wide ranging than that. It captures the complex intersectionality of place, class, genre, industry gatekeeping, and the relationship between industry and culture. Films, places and texts discussed in this discursive chat include Rochester and Dickens, and David Lean's Great Expectations, Terence Davies, The Commitments, Nick Love, Sexy Beast and the crime cinema that followed it, Muscle and Hyena, Guy Ritchie, Last Orders, Ray Winstone, Rose Glass and Shane Meadows. It is fascinating conversation and hopefully provides insight into Neil and Kat's current thinking about the complexities of British Cinema historically and contemporarily. — You can listen to The Cinematologists for free wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. Getting a breakout role in film and television is the dream for many aspiring actors, but just as important are the projects one chooses to take after that breakout gig. Given the business' habit of boxing artists into the first thing the world sees them do well, it can be a great challenge to amass a diverse body of work. How does one steer clear of those limitations and carve a path forward with volume and diversity? Perhaps by taking a cue from Kaya Scodelario.Scodelario's star began to soar via her work as Effy Stonem in the hit British teen series, Skins. After doing four seasons of the show, Scodelario began to pick up other television and film credits, credits ranging from Hollywood blockbusters like 2010's Clash of the Titans to Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights, which celebrated its big debut at the 2011 Venice Film Festival before going on to other top tier fests like the Toronto International Film Festival and Sundance.Over a decade later, Scodelario still enjoys a vast range of work. She headlined the 2019 horror gem Crawl, jumped into a popular game franchise with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, and then did the Christmas romantic comedy, This Is Christmas. Yet another vastly different standout credit on her resume? The new Guy Ritchie Netflix series, The Gentlemen, a kinetic crime comedy that's enjoying a good deal of Emmy buzz this season. Inspired by Ritchie's 2019 film, The Gentlemen series stars Theo James as Edward Horniman. After his father passes, Eddie inherits the family estate and becomes Duke of Halstead. As if all that isn't enough to process, Eddie is soon made aware that his father secretly made an arrangement with Bobby Glass' (Ray Winstone) weed empire. If Eddie continues to let them grow their product below ground on his property, he'll get large sums of money in return, money Eddie needs given the state of the family farm and his brother's (Daniel Ings) habit of accumulating massive debts with dangerous figures. The person in charge of this weed empire while Bobby is in prison? His daughter, Scodelario's Susie Glass. In celebration of The Gentlemen's successful Season 1 run, Scodelario joined me for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to retrace her steps from breaking out via Skins to starring in an acclaimed Guy Ritchie production. Hey there, fellow Watchers. Today, we're turning the Born to Watch blowtorch on the 2000 British crime drama "Sexy Beast", directed by Jonathan Glazer in his feature film debut. This movie is a riveting exploration of the criminal underworld, marked by outstanding performances, sharp dialogue, and an intriguing blend of violence and dark humour. Let's dissect what makes this film a standout in its genre and why it remains a compelling watch two decades later.Plot Overview"Sexy Beast" follows the story of Gal Dove (Ray Winstone), a retired safecracker living a blissful life in a sun-soaked Spanish villa with his wife, DeeDee (Amanda Redman). Their idyllic existence is shattered by the arrival of Don Logan (Ben Kingsley), a psychotic gangster determined to recruit Gal for one last heist back in London. What unfolds is a tense, psychological battle of wills as Gal tries to resist being dragged back into a life he desperately wants to leave behind.Character Development and PerformancesAt the heart of "Sexy Beast" are its complex characters and the phenomenal performances that bring them to life. Ray Winstone's portrayal of Gal Dove embodies a man caught between his peaceful present and a violent past. Winstone's portrayal is nuanced, showing Gal's vulnerability, deep love for DeeDee, and his palpable fear of Don Logan.Ben Kingsley, however, steals the show as Don Logan. Kingsley's performance is nothing short of electrifying. He transforms into a menacing force of nature, delivering lines with a terrifying and captivating ferocity. His portrayal of Logan earned him numerous accolades, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The dynamic between Winstone and Kingsley drives much of the film's tension, with their scenes together crackling with intensity.Amanda Redman as DeeDee and Ian McShane as the enigmatic crime boss Teddy Bass also deliver strong performances, adding depth to the narrative. Redman's DeeDee is more than just a supportive spouse; she's a strong, grounding presence in Gal's life. McShane's Teddy Bass, on the other hand, exudes a quiet, chilling menace that complements Kingsley's more overtly violent Logan.Cinematography and DirectionJonathan Glazer's direction in "Sexy Beast" is assured and stylistically bold. The film opens with a memorable sequence of Gal sunbathing by his pool, set to the tune of Dean Martin's "Sway," immediately establishing the movie's unique tone. Glazer employs a visual style that juxtaposes the bright, serene Spanish landscapes with London's dark, gritty underworld. This contrast highlights the dichotomy of Gal's two worlds and enhances the film's thematic tension.Cinematographer Ivan Bird's work is noteworthy for its striking imagery and composition. Colour and light play a significant role in setting the mood. The sun-drenched scenes in Spain are warm and inviting, creating a sense of tranquillity that is constantly under threat. In contrast, the London scenes are darker and more claustrophobic, reflecting the dangerous, suffocating nature of the criminal world Gal is trying to escape.Script and DialogueLouis Mellis and David Scinto's script is a masterclass of tension and character study. The dialogue is sharp, witty, and often laced with dark humour. Don Logan's relentless barrage of insults and threats is horrifying and perversely entertaining, showcasing the writers' skill in creating a repellent and fascinating character. The script also delves into themes of fear, loyalty, and the struggle for redemption. Gal's internal conflict is palpable, and his interactions with DeeDee provide a poignant counterpoint to the film's more violent elements. The writing ensures that "Sexy Beast" is not just a crime thriller but also a deeply human story about a man grappling with his past and yearning for a peaceful future.Cultural Impact and Legacy"Sexy Beast" was released to critical acclaim, praised for its innovative direction, strong performances, and intense narrative. Ben Kingsley's portrayal of Don Logan has become iconic, often cited as one of the greatest villain performances in cinema history. The film's success marked Jonathan Glazer as a director to watch, leading to his later acclaimed works such as "Birth" and "Under the Skin."The film also stands out for its unique approach to the crime genre, blending elements of psychological drama with dark humor. Its influence can be seen in later films that seek to explore the inner lives of criminals with similar depth and complexity. In "Sexy Beast," we find a film that is as captivating as it is unsettling. Its exploration of the criminal psyche, outstanding performances, and stylish direction make it a standout in the crime genre. As we revisit this modern classic, we're reminded of the power of cinema to create characters that linger in our minds and stories that challenge our perceptions. We hope you enjoyed this deep dive into "Sexy Beast." Send us a Text Message.Ever find yourself stuck in a cinematic time warp? That's where Addy and I landed when "Sexy Beast" leaped out from our movie vault. We kick things off with a bewildering opening straight out of a Looney Tunes sketch, before diving into the meat of this unconventional heist film where the loot is less glittering jewels and more the intense, heart-thumping interactions between characters. Listen as we unravel the threads of a narrative spun with the central theme of escaping one's past, and how the formidable Don, played by Ben Kingsley, casts a shadow long enough to chill your spine. What happens when a self-proclaimed 'sexy beast' is stripped of his bravado by a ghost from his old life? We dissect the transformation of our protagonist, whose veil of arrogance is torn away by Don's relentless pursuit, leading to a captivating exploration of power dynamics and masculinity. The film's dream sequences and the significant influence of the protagonist's wife drive our conversation further into the depths of the story's complex psychological landscape. You won't want to miss how we unfold the narrative's symbolism and dissect character arcs that mirror the struggle to sever ties with a life of crime.Wrapping up, we shine a spotlight on Ben Kingsley's tour-de-force performance, which set expectations sky-high for his later roles, like the Mandarin in "Iron Man 3." Plus, we give a nod to the stellar contributions from Ian McShane and Ray Winstone. As we break down the film's artistry, from impactful scene transitions to the authentically flavored British dialogue, our final verdict lands at a generous three and a half stars. This episode peels back the layers of an oddball movie that dares to twist heist film conventions, all woven with humor and everyday banter that breathes life into the script. Support the Show.

This week Megan and Dave tackle AMERICAN DREAMER (2:07), and it ain't pretty. Sure, Peter Dinklage and Shirley MacLaine are fine. And sure, Dave laughed at a few things. But that's about all the positives we have for it (hoo boy, do we get amped up during this talk!). Then Evan, Megan, and Dave watched DAMSEL (22:40), the new dragon's-gonna-eat-ya-but-not-if-I-can-help-it flick starring Millie Bobby Brown as a princess who meets said dragon after a bit of marital subterfuge orchestrated by Robin Wright as her nefarious would-be mother-in-law. Following an uneven opening, we thought it pulled together (even if Dave had some choice things to say about his favorite actor ever, Ray Winstone, who plays Brown's father). And did we like DAMSEL as much as we liked the similar-ish THE PRINCESS from 2022? Over on Patreon, we talk about the 1954 GODZILLA in honor of its 70th anniversary.

LOOK OUT! It's only Films To Be Buried With! Join your host Brett Goldstein as he talks life, death, love and the universe with one of the UK's finest, it's RAY WINSTONE! You did indeed read that correctly. Brett caught up with Ray for a glorious episode which could have only been improved if it was conducted in person, but if Ray is available you take him any way you can bloody well get him. If you don't know him, he starred in huge films such as Sexy Beast, The Departed and Beowulf to name a few. Of course, a lot of his filmography gets covered here but on top of that, we hear about shouting at the screen, early David Lynch experiences, creating magic on a non-real film set, being an avid viewer of movies from all across the globe, getting over language hurdles in films and so much more. A true delight. ENJOY! (note: Ray mentioned a film where someone has amnesia - looks like it might be 'Random Harvest' - in case you're curious!) Video and extra audio available on Brett's Patreon! One of the UK's most loved and versatile actors, Kathy Burke, lands in Grace's sitting room this week. Transitioning from punk teenager, to award-winning actor and then taking on comedy, Kathy has loved almost all of it. She talks to Grace about her career highlights and when her personal life sometimes got in the way, recounting the food that got her through. Whether it's eating fish and chips on a film set with Ray Winstone, a love-hate relationship with bananas and beans, or coming to adore biscuits in her 50s, Kathy and Grace reminisce about it all. And hey, sometimes all you need is a bit of burnt toast

Another landmark live show for the Empire Podcast saw a capacity crowd cram themselves into Hall One at our spiritual home of Kings Place, London, to celebrate Episode 600. And we brought along some exceptional star guests as well, as Tom Hiddleston — Loki himself — popped in for an extended chat about the God Of Mischief, and other animals, with Chris Hewitt; Mia McKenna-Bruce, the star of How To Have Sex and newly-minted BAFTA Rising Star Award nominee, chatted to Beth Webb about Robert De Niro, McDonald's, and Fake James Cameron; and Ray Winstone sat down with Alex Godfrey to natter about his forthcoming one-two punch of The Gentlemen and Damsel, and some of his legendary films, from Sexy Beast to Nil By Mouth. That extended trio of interviews can be found at approx: 57:16.00 and ends roughly at 2:14:00Either side of that, you will find more live show chaos from the podteam, as Chris is joined on stage by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Ben Travis to discuss the week's movie news, review The Holdovers, Mean Girls (not that one), The Kitchen, and The End We Start From, and they tackle as many audience questions as they can before the venue turns out the lights. Mind you, we would have kept going by the light of our Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire glow-in-the-dark cover. Anyway, it's an absolute belter of a show, and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did making it. And thanks for all your support over the years. We couldn't do this without you. Enjoy.

This week, we're diving into London Boulevard, the directorial debut of The Departed Screenwriter William Monahan. Despite being familiar territory, the film, in which he plays a reformed gangster who falls for a movie star (Keira Knightley), mostly just vanishes the second it's released, and we dig into why, talking the baffling lack of chemistry between the leads, the generic nature of everything onscreen, and the film's callous use of sexual assault. Along the way, we're also praising Colin's fits, looking at the long career of Ray Winstone, and, for some reason, just chatting about James Bond. Connor can't stop talking about Albert Finney. Cole acknowledges a fault in The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Well, here we go--a movie which boldly asks "what if we took the Arthur legend and made it Dances with Wolves meets the atheism subreddit?" Starring Clive Owen, Keira Knightley, Stellan Skarsgard, Mads Mikkelsen, Ioan Gruffudd, and Ray Winstone. Directed by Antoine Fuqua. Written by Dave Franzoni. Your hosts dig into Jerry Bruckheimer's canon, he produced this 2004 flick, directed by journeyman Antoine Fuqua. They talk the appeal of Clive Owen, gush over Ray Winstone and generally tear this wet paper bag of a film to shreds.
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2011 retrospective is almost at an end. Our second to last review is Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" based on Brian Selznick's 2007 book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," starring Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, Chloë Grace Moretz, Ray Winstone, Emily Mortimer & Jude Law. The movie found unexpected ways to pay homage to cinema's past while incorporating 3D technology from cinema's present to give audiences a cinematic experience, unlike anything they had seen before from Scorsese until that point in his career. How does this family film aimed at children and adults hold up today? Take a trip to the moon with Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Daniel Howat, Will Mavity, and me as we discuss the film's story, themes, performances, crafts, awards season run, and more in our review. Thank you for all your support, and enjoy! Also, be sure to check out our other 2011 retrospective reviews for "War Horse," "The Help," "The Iron Lady," "Midnight In Paris," "The Tree Of Life," "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," "Moneyball," "The Descendants" & "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." ForgivenessToday on Sense of Soul Podcast is Geoff Thompson, he is a film-maker, screenwriter, spiritual teacher, prolific British author and martial arts expert. Geoff is a BAFTA-winning screenwriter, penning multi-award-winning films for luminaries such as Ray Winstone and Orlando Bloom. The prestigious Black Belt Magazine USA polled him as the most influential martial artist in the world since Bruce Lee. Geoff has been featured on many mainstream TV shows and has written articles for national magazines and broadsheets, including The Times, Men's Fitness, GQ and FHM.He joined me to share his book called, 99 Reasons To Forgive, and Revenge Ain't One. His journey of understanding forgiveness. Geoff Thompson was sexually abused at the tender age of 11 by a trusted and beloved teacher. By the time he was 30 years old he was unconsciously displacing his rage into violence, sexual self-harm and long bouts of debilitating depression. After failing to find a solution to his burgeoning mania in all the conventional places, he set off on a Campbellian quest to find the answers for himself: about abuse, about the aftermath of abuse, about the true meaning of forgiveness, its metaphysical power, and how it is possible to heal, no matter how deep or how old the wound. He assures us that "there is treasure in the ruins", "there can be profit in sorrow and in suffering", and, with a few tried and tested, honest techniques and a heavy supply of courage, victims can reclaim their lives, they can win love and they can find healing and inspiration, post-abuse.In this deeply empirical study, Thompson reveals the true definition and the awesome power of forgiveness, clearly defining the difference between forgiving someone and letting them off. He demonstrates the power and freedom of "giving it over"; the revealed health benefits of releasing anger, dissonance and resentment; the hidden power of reciprocity; avoiding the hate trap; the healing power of love and compassion; the liberating practice of personal repentance; and discovering "the world to come" - the exhilarating expansion we experience when ignorance is dissolved with qualified knowledge."I told my story very late", Thompson tells us, "and suffered needlessly as a consequence; I'm hoping that 99 Reasons to Forgive will encourage others to share their story sooner, be inspired by my living example of powerful healing, and embrace their walking wounds as beauty scars, the rich tapestry of personal survival".Follow his journey: Instagram page @geoff thompson officialWatch his TEDx on fear and forgiveness.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aE0pRMtQeu0 Hosted on Acast.
