Our exit today has us being recognized for that one hit wonder we wrote in the 80s. This week, we are talking about Bridget Jones's Diary, written by Helen Fielding, Andrew Davies, and Richard Curtis, and directed by Sharon Maguire. Along with debating the dreamiest Mr. Darcy, we talk casting rumors, belated sequels, soundtracks, the year of Jim Broadbent, Austen adaptations, the allure of Hugh Grant, accents, Salman Rushdie, uncomfortable humor, and Mission Impossible.Theme music by Jonworthymusic.Powered by RiversideFM.CFF Films with Ross and friends.Movies We've Covered on the Show on Letterboxd.Movies Recommended on the Show on Letterboxd.

Rachel Joyce's debut novel The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry was a bestseller in 30 languages, became a much-loved film with Jim Broadbent and is about to become a stage musical. She's also got a new novel, a sun-soaked family drama called The Homemade God which has already been hailed by one critic as "the perfect holiday read". Levison Wood has travelled to 150 countries but holiday reading probably isn't top of his priorities as an explorer, documentary maker and photographer. He'll join us to talk about a career that's seen him serve in the army in Afghanistan, walk the full length of the Nile, make documentaries about endangered animals and circumnavigate the Arabian Peninsula. The actor and comedian Kiell Smith Bynoe starred in Ghosts and Stath Lets Flats and presented the Great British Sewing Bee but is about to go on tour with the aim of making improv cool again. Kool Story Bro sees him and a cast of comedians and actors pick up stories from audiences and make them into a show. What can he improv from this week's Loose Ends? Plus music from a contrasting pair of singer-songwriters - indie folk from Matilda Mann and jazz inflected from Maya Delilah.Presented by Stuart Maconie Produced in Salford by Olive Clancy

Writer and resident Gilbert & Sullivan expert Julia Sirmons joins to discuss Mike Leigh's 'Topsy-Turvy', a story of the aforementioned musical duo and the production of one of their most popular shows, 'The Mikado'. It's a film that feels at once like an outliler in Leigh's career up to that point (his first film not set in contemporary working-class London) and a pitch-perfect culmination of many of his career-long explorations. We begin with a discussion about the legacy of director Mike Leigh, his unusual method for drawing brilliant performances from his ensemble of some of the very best British actors, and his trademark style and narrative construction. Then, we unpack the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, exploring Topsy-Turvy's commitment to authenticity in its recreation of 19th century English theater culture, and the wise decision to focus the film on a particularly unstable moment in the long collaboration between the wordsmith and composer. Finally, we discuss the film's evocation of art and its production process, emphasizing the granular repetition of the work as well as the undergirding capitalist mechanics that necessitated performers assume a strong identity as a collective labor force. “On a tree by a river a little Tom Tit, sang willow, tit willow, tit willow…” This how Ko-Ko's plaintive lament of unrequited love begins.  When I was eleven, playing the challenging role of Ko Ko, The Lord High Executioner, in the Lake Massapaug Middle School production of The Mikado,  I laboriously committed those delicious lyrics to memory, along some other tasty tongue twisters, - syllable, by succulent syllable, and I loved every minute of it.It started a life-long obsession with -, and performing -, the wicked word-play of WS Gilbert - (played crustily in the film Topsy Turvey by the singular Jim Broadbent). This recording, from the 1936 D'Oyly Carte production, is sensitively rendered by Martyn Green, who tempers its obvious irony with some gravitas, playing quite differently from the more expected, crudely mugged style. Great verbal acrobats like Shakespeare, WS Gilbert, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, and Tom Lehrer -  can spin words like atomic particles, releasing a spray of electrons within our brain cells, sparking joy. What a rush!

Starring an all-star cast with DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz, Jim Broadbent, John C. It all led to a finished product that was high on ambition but messy in its execution. There are many bright spots to be found, including Daniel Day-Lewis' iconic performance as Bill The Butcher, the staggering production design, and the story's themes. Topsy-Turvy, writer-director Mike Leigh's ambitious period musical about the creation of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado", was not a commercial hit, losing about $14 million of its $20 million budget. But like almost all of Leigh's work, it was a critical smash, remaining one of his best-reviewed movies and the recipient of a number of awards, including two Oscars, and landing on a number of year-end best-of lists in 1999. Topsy-Turvy never really had "commercial hit" written all over it, though. It offers a uniformly spectacular cast including Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall, Kevin McKidd, Lesley Manville, and Andy Serkis, and absolutely none of them were at the time (or really are today) bankable stars. And much of its appeal depends on how you feel about (or even if you know the first thing about) the work of Gilbert and Sullivan, hardly tapping into the zeitgeist of mainstream 1999 popular culture. And Leigh's most commercially successful film had been 1994's Secrets and Lies, a runaway, word-of-mouth indy hit and critical and awards season darling. But Leigh is one of the most consistent directors alive, both in terms of the quality and very nature of his films. So in our final "hosts choice" round selection, we invited Joey's co-host on How to Win the Lottery, "Shreds", himself a giant Leigh stan, to discuss Leigh's first real dip into the waters of grand period drama.
