Nerts! Are you folks ready to get MANK-PILLED? We advise that you start by “mankro-dosing” David Fincher's 2020 exploration of the life and times of cantankerous screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. The Big Picture's Sean Fennessey joins us to chat about Fincher's first Netflix feature, and we're asking all the important questions. Would this film have a better reputation if it had been titled “manK!” ? Will there be a film made 40 years from now entitled “SORK” about Aaron Sorkin, David Fincher, Mark Zuckerberg, and the making of THE SOCIAL NETWORK? Is Mank the “Jabba the Hut of cynicism”? Will Griffin use this episode as another excuse to talk about The Offer? In the years since, Seyfried has hit a new stride in her career – earning wide-spread critical acclaim for her portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout including an Emmy win last year and a Golden Globe win this past January. In this interview, Seyfried discusses her experience preparing for Mank, shares why working with Fincher is such a singular experience, and explains how it made her think differently about her own approach to the work.

Bring out your cudgels, the midwestern barbarians are afoot! This week we delve into the massively underrated 1942 Christmas film The Man Who Came to Dinner starring Bette Davis and Monty Woolley, the story of the cranky proto-podcaster Sheridan Whiteside who seemingly breaks his hip on a speaking tour and is forced to recuperate in a podunk Ohio town. To contemporaries, Whiteside was obviously based on prolific critic and radio personality Alexander Woollcott, whose appraisal could make or break careers at the drop of a hat, even though his heft has largely been forgotten. In this episode we explore the life of Woollcott as well as the famous social circle that surrounded him: the Algonquin Round Table, a collection of particularly gifted, galling, and gay young writers and comedians who met for lunch every day across the 20s and 30s. Members included Harpo Marx, Dorothy Parker, even Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. This extended circle of friends dominated the American culture industry in Hollywood's early days, and this movie is an amazing window into this period, filled with nods to many different members of Manhattan's "Algonquin Round Table", alternatively known as the "Vicious Circle." By the end of this episode, you'll see why The Man Who Came to Dinner deserves the highest seat in the holiday movie pantheon. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gladiofreeeurope/support

Over a 50+ years career, he's well-known for writing or producing films like Forrest Gump, A Star is Born, Mank, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Munich, Ali, and the list goes on. The critically and commercially acclaimed American drama, Forrest Gump is an adaptation of Winston Groom's 1986 novel of the same title, adapted by Eric Roth in 1994. The story depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump, played by the incomparable, Tom Hanks, a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama who witnesses and unwittingly influences several defining historical events in the 20th century the United States. The $55 million budget film grossed $683.1 million at the Box Office and won the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and three Golden Globes awards. With a dream to pursue writing, he got his start working crew on a bunch of independent movies being made by some experimental filmmakers at a local studio (the Millennium will film workshop) while studying at Columbia University and later transferred to UCLA Film School. While on the climb up, Roth got the opportunity through his good friend Stuart Rosenberg, to rewrite the script for the Paul Newman movie, The Drowning Pool, at the tender age of 20 years old.Last year, Roth co-produced the multi-award nomination biographical drama, Mank. mank earned ten Oscar® nominations and six Golden Globe Awards nominations.1940. Film studio RKO hires 24-year-old wunderkind Orson Welles under a contract that gives him full creative control of his movies. For his first film, he calls in washed-up alcoholic Herman J Mankiewicz to write the screenplay. That film is "Citizen Kane," and this is the story of how it was written.A Star is Born, co-written by Roth became a 2018 phenomenon. Director, co-writer and lead actor, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga brought steaming chemistry to our screens in a way that had been lacking. The film grossed twelve times its $36 million budget which is more than any of the other three versions of the musical romantic drama film.Seasoned musician Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) discovers, and falls in love with struggling artist Ally (Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer - until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally's career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.A must mention amongst Roth's screenplays is the 2008 screenplay adaptation of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Academy winner Mahershala Ali and Taraji P. Henson. The film tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backward with consequences. I could go on and on, through the extensive list of incredible writing Eric Roth has given the world, but you can listen to our conversation to hear all about them. Even his Television writing and producing on shows like House of Cards, The Alienist, and the upcoming remake of the science fiction classic Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve.I've been a fan of Eric's work since my days working at a video store. Mank! On today's episode of Cinemallennials, I'll be talking with Lars Henriks, a director, actor, and host of the Lars Henriks Podcast International who picked a film that really needs no introduction, The Wizard of Oz (1939). From its storied production history to its long list of changes in its illustrious who's who of writing and directing departments, featuring names like, Victor Fleming, George Cukor, King Vidor, and Herman J. Mankiewicz, The Wizard of Oz has long been considered one of the greatest films of all time. The Wizard of Oz's legacy is probably one of the most, if not the most widely recognizable not only was its writing and directing nearly perfect, but its casting, musical composition, set design and costuming all have influenced the world of filmmaking ever since the film was released in 1939. The Wizard of Oz follows the story of a girl from Kansas, Dorothy and her little dog Toto. After feeling underappreciated on her aunt and uncle's farm, Dorothy decides to run away. She then bumps into a traveling magician who convinces her to return home due to an impending tornado. After getting home, she is soon knocked out by a flying window pane. When she wakes up, Dorothy steps into a new world. A world full of magic and whimsy where she is regarded as a both a hero and a villain for killing the Wicked Witch of the East. The witch's sister, The Wicked Witch of the West swears revenge on Dorothy and vows to prevent her from returning home. Now stranded and being hunted in this strange land, Dorothy takes the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City in order to seek the advice from Oz, the great and powerful, an all knowing Wizard. While on her way, she encounters a scarecrow, a tin man and a cowardly lion who are also looking for the Wizard. Teaming together, the fellowship travel to the Emerald City, but the road won't be easy as the Wicked Witch of the West, her flying monkeys and other cronies are hot on their trail. So sit back, relax, and we're off to see the wizard! You can purchase The Wizard of Oz here. The online reviews database Rotten Tomatoes has unearthed a negative 80-year-old write-up of "Citizen Kane," stripping the cinematic classic of its perfect score among critics and demoting it below movies including "Paddington 2" and "The Terminator."Orson Welles' masterpiece is widely considered one of the most important titles in movie history, pioneering a number of filmmaking techniques that are still in use today. But it apparently underwhelmed one critic for the Chicago Tribune, whose lukewarm review has come back to tarnish the movie's legacy eight decades after it was written."'Citizen Kane' presents an almost clinical dissection of a complete egotist," the review reads. It goes on to dismiss the film's use of moody sets: "I only know it gives one the creeps and that I kept wishing they'd let a little sunshine in."The review was added to the Rotten Tomatoes website on March 2, but has only been noticed in recent days. The website links out to a newspaper clipping of the decades-old story, and its addition means "Citizen Kane" now no longer has exclusively positive reviews.Welles' film still enjoys 116 positive write-ups on the website, but the sole black mark removes the film from the exclusive "100% club" -- a collection that features movies including the first two "Toy Story" installments, the much-loved "Paddington" sequel and Arnold Schwartzenegger's action classic "The Terminator."The offending review appears to have been written anonymously, with its byline "Mae Tinee" an apparent pun on "matinee."The same critic is listed as the author of a number of contemporary reviews for the Chicago Tribune between the 1920s and 1960s -- they were more complimentary of other classics, including "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Casablanca."The write-up notes the hype that already surrounded the movie on its release, but the critic was nonetheless unmoved. "'Citizen Kane' fails to impress critic as greatest ever filmed," the headline reads.Welles was a 25-year-old phenomenon when his debut feature film, based on the life of newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, was released. He also starred in the movie, and his directorial creativity -- along with cinematographer Gregg Toland's distinctive deep-focus frames and unusually angled shots -- revolutionized movie-making."Mank," a biographical film about "Citizen Kane" writer Herman J. Mankiewicz, was nominated for a number of Oscars at last week's Academy Awards, ultimately losing out on the Best Picture prize to "Nomadland."text by Rob Picheta, CNN

Movie of the Year: 2020Mank The Taste Buds continue their prep for the 2020 season with Mank! Oh Fincher, My Fincher. In this episode, we dive into the world of smartass screenwriter and coolest-drunk-at-the-party Herman J. Mankiewicz as he pens the script for what is arguably the best movie of all time, Citizen Kane. It should be noted that the aforementioned synopsis in no way reflects this movie's plot. We barely even see Orson Welles (and the man was hard to miss! 6”2' and simply built of beef). Fincher spends most of the time rummaging around Mank's vodka-soaked memories of Old Hollywood, in all of its sleazy, glitzy glory. Icons of the studio era's golden age parade across the beautifully stylized screen, from a weepy Louis B. Mayer to a conniving Irving Thalberg, offering the audience a chance to contemplate Fincher's favorite subject – awful white guys and their eternal knack for wreaking havoc on those around them. Presented in dreamy black-and-white and sprinkled with the occasional cigarette burn, Mank investigates the politics and corruption that inspired Citizen Kane's script through the eyes of its deeply flawed protagonist. Gary Oldman convincingly portrays the paradoxical writer with an unmistakable lilt of self-disgust: a leftist wit among capitalist titans, an intellectual among hacks, a jester among kings… he hides his impotence behind boozy layers of aloof criticism. He treats his wife poorly and vomits at cool parties. He's the worst gambler I've ever seen and is mean to Lilly Collins (has he not seen Emily in Paris?!). Fundamentally, Mank is an a-hole. But the kind of a-hole Fincher can't help but love (I get it… who among us hasn't fallen prey to a f@#kboi). The most appealing parts of him surface in his interactions with Marion Davies, played pitch-perfectly by the brilliant and ever-luminous Amanda Seyfried. Set in the shadow of the 1934 California gubernatorial election, Mank serves as a scathing piece of social commentary. Its targets are, sadly, evergreen: wealth disparity, fascism, and the upper-crust who laugh it all off because they can. While Mank in no way comes out of the events a hero, his role in the fallout reveals the conflicted and complex man operating beneath the performance. I'm just gonna say it, this episode rules. As detailed in our recent podcast announcement, this post is one of many changes being made to the podcast in order to give you, the listener, episodes more frequently. According to IMDB “1930's Hollywood is reevaluated through the eyes of scathing social critic and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay of Citizen Kane (1941).” Mank is directed by David Fincher and stars Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins Tom Burke and Charles Dance. Fincher's latest is a welcome departure in his oeuvre that I quite enjoyed. The set and sound designs are stunning, the performances are outstanding and the screenplay(penned by Fincher's late father, Jack) carries the type of Hollywood nostalgia the Academy will go bananas over come awards season in spring 2021. There are three things in particular I want to note about Mank:  #1. I should clarify when I say “departure…”  Yes, like most of Fincher's films, the main character (Mankiewicz in this case) is trapped in a machine, arguably of his own making, and he can't seem to escape…a theme made pretty explicit within the text. Whether […] The post Mank – The Cinematic Schematic Review appeared first on The Cinematropolis.

Mank hit Netflix last Friday, and it's already got lots of Oscar buzz. The Godfather: Part III is a movie that was actually nominated for seven Oscars 30 years ago (it didn't win any), and it's the third film in a series that had already won nine Academy Awards, including two Best Pictures. Part III, though, has always been thought of relatively poorly. And so, for its 30th anniversary this month, Francis Ford Coppola has rejiggered it and rereleased it as The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. This new version is four minutes shorter, starts with a different scene, ends slightly differently ... and is ultimately the same movie. Film journalist and filmmaker Nev Pierce joins me to discuss Mank, David Fincher's latest film which is now available to watch on Netflix and in select cinemas. Following screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay for Citizen Kane, the film takes a look at Hollywood and politics. Me and Nev discuss the film's analysis of Hollywood liberalism, what it has to say about the idea of the auteur, how Fincher made it feel like an old classic and whether it really does have anything to do with Citizen Kane.

The Film Board by The Next Reel Film Podcasts

We're finally in the last month of 2020 and the entertainment industry is mulling through new layers of execution and release. In this first week of December, Netflix released Mank by David Fincher, keying our imagination towards remembering old Hollywood. It's a bit of a legacy labor of love for Fincher in that the screenplay was written by his father and was originally intended to be made years before Jack Fincher's death in 2003. It focuses on the politics of filmmaking in the 1930s, how those dynamics mixed into the world, and were reflected in Citizen Kane by screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. It's The Film Board's first black and white subject and Tommy Metz III, Steve Sarmento, and Justin "JJ" Jaeger will attempt to travel in time to talk through the relevance and references in this stylized take on one of the most celebrated stories in Hollywood's history. The period was a confusing and difficult time as the world suffered out of The Great Depression in the run-up to World War II. We'll get at how this movie characterized the massive entertainment machine of the time and how Mank's story may have effected change in all of it.    Phillip starts the show by telling you about Orson Welles radio show The War of the Worlds, then he explains who the main 4 characters are that you need to know about from these films; Orson Welles, Herman J. Mankiewicz, William Randolph Hearst, and Marion Davies. He then dives into talking quickly about the new movie Mank from 2020, and his review of it. After that he dives into Citizen Kane from 1941 with a small review. (What can be said that hasn't been said already.) Then he talks about the after math; Pauline Kael's 1971 essay called Raising Kane in The New Yorker, Orson Welles 1971 letter to the New Yorker, Peter Bogdanovich's Esquire essay from 1972 called The Kane Mutiny, and tons of other facts and fun bits. Come back on December 9th for The Watchlist: Episode #9, and then December 16th for Time Squared: Timecop (1994) & Timecrimes (2007) with another Phil (formerly of Those Movie Guys Podcast).

We're delighted to bring you this interview with the charming and wonderfully talented Ferdinand Kingsley, who plays Irving Thalberg in the latest masterpiece by director, David Fincher. Mank (2020, Netflix) is set in old Hollywood and centres around the elite circle that were running MGM at the time Herman J. Mankiewicz was developing Orson Welles' masterpiece Citizen Kane (1941).Accomplished actor Ferdinand Kingsley, son of actor Ben Kingsley and theatre director Alison Sutcliffe, speaks directly to his fellow actors about how he carved out his own path in the performing world. It really wasn't as easy as you may assume. He discusses the criticality of training, the difference between film acting and theatre performance, his childhood behind the curtain and his preparation process for playing a character with such a contrasting worldview and actions taken, such as, Thalberg. This highly accomplished MGM film producer, played by Kingsley, became known for delivering the world's first mainstream "fake news", disguised as service announcements and documentary style clips in cinemas. Irving Thalberg produced these "news" segments using out of work actors and they were played at the beginning of most of his blockbuster movies, in order to influence the vote of the masses towards the Republican party.

Revolving guest-host Lani Gonzalez joins again this week for Shane's pick, the controversial and often “discredited” 1971 essay from the polarizing New Yorker film critic about the former greatest film of all time and how Orson Welles tried to steal its screenwriting credit from the forgotten Herman J. Mankiewicz. On today's episode we discuss how, unfortunately, the essay deserves much of its negative reputation due to a pre-determined thesis and sloppy research — but how it also manages to be a brilliant history about a generation of forgotten Algonquin writers giving us the wittiest and most literary period for American film, the 1930s. Also: The essay as the basis for David Fincher's upcoming Netflix film Mank, the nature of film credit, and whether or not Kael deserves her reputation as America's greatest film critic.“Raising Kane” can be found either as the introduction to The Citizen Kane Book or in its two-part publication in the New Yorker here and here.Citizen Kane is available to rent on video platforms, and is currently streaming on HBO Max.Gonzalez writes about film for both Book and Film Globe and, alongside her husband AJ, their blog Cinema Then and Now.
