The inventor of the Please Call Me service, Nkosana Makate says he is relived that the Supreme Court of Appeals has ordered certain costs to be paid out by cellular network giant Vodacom over the prolonged court impasse between the two parties. Yesterday, the SCA ordered Vodacom to make a new offer to Makate over his creation of the Please Call Me Service. Initially, Vodacom offered Makate a payout of 47 Million rands, however, his legal team rejected this offer and calculated that based on a five percent share of an estimated 205-Billion rand in revenue over 18 years, his new share could equate to an estimated 20-Billion rand in compensation, with interest. Earlier, Sakina Kamwendo caught up with Makate and he started by explaining the cost factor against Vodacom.

Please Call Me inventor Nkosana Makate says he will continue to oppose Vodacom's application to have the high court order granted against them overturned. Earlier this week the Supreme Court of Appeals reserved judgment on the matter over the right compensation for Makate's "Please Call Me" concept. Vodacom has offered Makate R47 million, but he wants 5% of the generated revenue, which he puts at around R9 billion. To further discuss this Elvis Presslin spoke to Please Call Me inventor Nkosana Makate

Interview: Ari Kahn speaks out on the 'please call me' saga

TechCentral — In this episode of the podcast, TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod is joined by Ari Kahn, the former MTN contractor who invented and patented the "Callme" service while working at the mobile operator. Kahn, who Vodacom recently admitted came up with the idea on which its own "please call me" service is based, provides an in-depth overview of how he conceived of and developed Callme, why and how he patented it, how MTN implemented it, and why Vodacom's rival "please call me" offering, launch soon after Callme, was basically a clone of the MTN service. He sets out the timeline of events that led to the MTN launch and speculates about why the operator didn't enforce its patent after Vodacom's launch of "please call me". MTN eventually allowed the patent to lapse, which Kahn describes in the podcast as "shocking" and an "almost wilful destruction of property". Kahn, who now lives in California, says the concept that former Vodacom employee Nkosana Makate came up with and presented to his bosses was very different to the MTN offering and not what Vodacom eventually implemented. He explains why he doesn't believe Makate is entitled to compensation for "please call me" and advises him to take Vodacom's "overwhelmingly generous" offer - said to be R49-million - because if he continues to pursue the case in the courts, he "stands to lose everything".

In the podcast this week, Duncan McLeod and Regardt van der Berg unpack the soap opera that is the fight between Vodacom and its former employee, Nkosana Makate, over the "please call me" service. What's the background to the dispute? Why has Makate rejected Vodacom's offer, which, according to reports, is substantial? Who really invented "please call me", MTN or Vodacom? And where is the dispute going next? Also this week, Apple shows who's the boss by getting aggressive with Facebook and Google; Spotify is getting serious about podcasting; and two hacker groups may alone have been responsible for stealing US$1-billion in cryptocurrencies. Regardt's pick this week is Alienware's AW2518HF monitor, while Duncan doesn't have a pick this week. This week's song pick is Jet, by Paul McCartney and Wings. Nigeria's tech scene was abuzz last week following Mark Essien's hotel booking platform Hotel.ng securing international investment co-led by Omidyar Network and the EchoVC Pan-Africa Fund. However, for undisclosed reasons the parties involved have chosen not to make public the fine points of the deal. This week we debate whether it does Africa's tech ecosystem any good for important transactions like these to happen behind closed doors, and for details to remain secret. While we're at it, we poke a little fun at Jovago Co-founder and CEO, Marek Zmysłowski and Mark Essien’s on-going public tiff over who's hotel booking platform reigns supreme. Also, we share two expert comments we received in response to last week's discussion topic: Bitcoin and the Blockchain: Worth Embracing? on the future of bitcoin and the possible future applications of the blockchain technology. As usual, we also have all the biggest tech, digital and innovation news from across Africa: -- Discover how Nigeria's fuel and electricity shortages are affecting big tech, -- Hear how Nkosana Makate aka the Please Call Me Guy's billion dollar case against Vodacom is going, and -- Find out how a Nigerian computer science Masters student at the University of Cape Town is using tech to save endangered African languages.
