This episode of The Food Professor Podcast opens with Michael and Sylvain analyzing the most pressing developments shaping Canada's food and retail landscape. Sylvain reflects on the extraordinary national and global reach of Canada's Food Price Report, which this year generated unprecedented media attention and continues to influence retailers, manufacturers, governments, and consumers planning for 2026. They dig into the structural issues behind Canada's complex food-tax regime, discuss why the GST holiday changed how Canadians think about food pricing, and explore the broader economic forces influencing consumer behaviour. The hosts then turn to one of the most surprising developments of the season: mounting instability in the chicken sector. With nine consecutive missed production cycles, increased reliance on imports, and confusion around border testing, the system designed to provide stability is under strain. Sylvain breaks down why this matters for households, grocers, foodservice operators, and the broader supply chain—especially as chicken remains Canada's most-purchased protein. The conversation then expands southward to U.S. agricultural subsidies, tariff battles, Costco's legal challenge over tariff refunds, and the potential fallout of proposed U.S. tariffs on Canadian fertilizer. The second half of the episode shifts to a live interview recorded at the Coffee Association of Canada conference, where Michael and Sylvain sit down with Carman Allison, Vice President, NIQ Canada, one of the country's most respected consumer data voices. Carman previews his conference keynote, “Navigating Disruption,” and explains why coffee inflation is reshaping buying behaviour even among loyal consumers who consider coffee essential. He outlines NIQ's segmentation showing that 29% of Canadian households are now financially vulnerable—and how this is affecting deal-seeking, product substitution, and consumption patterns.Drawing on NIQ's expanded Omni Shopper Panel, Carman describes how rapid multicultural population growth is shifting beverage preferences, why Generation X now holds the greatest spending power, and how value-seeking is reshaping entire store categories. He also reveals early evidence of the GLP-1 effect, where households using weight-loss or diabetes medications show measurable declines in food consumption.Carman closes by highlighting growth opportunities in instant coffee, protein-and-coffee hybrids, Maple-forward flavour innovation, and the continued rise of home-meal-replacement programs. His insights give retailers and suppliers a grounded, data-rich roadmap for growth in a highly price-sensitive marketplace. The Food Professor #podcast is presented by Caddle. Martial Law in South Korea and the Shadow of the North: Colleagues Morse Tan and Gordon Chang discuss South Korea facing severe political turmoil following President Yoon's declaration of martial law, a move his supporters argue was a constitutional response to obstructionist anti-state forces; the opposition, led by figures previously sympathetic to North Korea, has been accused of attempting to paralyze the government, while accusations of "insurrection" against President Yoon are dismissed as nonsensical, with the political infighting fracturing the conservative party and leaving South Korea vulnerable to the North Korean regime in a way not seen since the Korean War. 1951

In Episode 1114 of The Clay Edwards Show, host Clay Edwards and guest Andrew Gasser dive into the escalating "conservative media war," highlighting alleged infiltrations by "LGBTQ cuck beta males" and weak figures undermining traditional values. They discuss Milo Yiannopoulos's explosive appearance on Tim Pool's show, where Milo accuses Benny Johnson of being secretly gay based on old BuzzFeed articles like "Let's Be Honest Straight Guys, We All Like Butt Stuff" and "Which President Looks Sexiest in a Swimsuit?"—arguing such content proves hypocrisy in portraying a perfect family image. The duo critiques Candace Owens for urging military members to risk dishonorable discharges and sowing dissension against Turning Point USA (TPUSA), labeling her "evil" and fake for potentially destroying lives and eroding conservatism. They lament Charlie Kirk's death as a loss for TPUSA's leadership, calling his show "dreadfully boring" and the organization "rudderless" without strong, high-testosterone guidance. Gasser emphasizes how figures like Owens and Shapiro plant seeds of doubt, watering down the movement, while Edwards stresses disdain for closeted hypocrites quoting the Bible amid broader infighting threatening Republican unity ahead of midterms.

The future looked confusing, painful, and humiliating. By every social measure, Joseph had reason to walk away. As a man of good character, he chose the kindest option available to him – quietly ending the engagement instead of exposing Mary to shame or even death. On his own, he made a compassionate choice.

So, another year is almost over - but what did we learn in 2025, South East Asia's third full year of travel since the Covid pandemic? This week, Gary and Hannah delve through the archives to take stock of an eventful 12 months for travel and tourism in South East Asia and the broader Asia Pacific region. We journey from the regional turmoil of Trump's tariffs to the tourism impacts of scam centres, and from Singapore setting the standard on SAF to Timor Leste becoming ASEAN's 11th member. Plus, we ask what happened to the ASEAN Tourism Visa, and question why the Philippines is pushing to promote ASEAN as a single destination. We discuss India's secondary city tourism wave, and look at which countries made new visa-free access moves throughout the year. And we gaze into a crystal ball to foretell whether Thailand and Cambodia might make peace and reopen their borders any time soon. Finally, we delve into Vietnam's remarkable breakout year after an initially slow post-Covid recovery - and its reluctance to offer visa-free access to Chinese tourists.

UK Tax Hikes Reach All-Time High, Fueling Entrepreneur Exodus and Political Turmoil for Labor Party — Simon Constable — Constable reports that the UK Labour budget under Rachel Reeves will raise the aggregate tax burden to an all-time high of 38% of GDP. This approach is viewed as fundamentally anti-business, with over two-thirds of entrepreneurs reporting that the government lacks genuine support for wealth creation and private enterprise. Constable predicts this environment will trigger an exodus of new wealth creators and capital. Constable suggests the resulting political turmoil positions Nigel Farage as a credible contender for future UKleadership.

Financial Resilience Vetting: Supply chain managers must vet the financial health of all partners, not just customers. Use financial services (like Moody's) to assess stability. A stressed supplier is a critical performance risk, especially for industries like automotive and pharma. Geopolitical Planning & Diversification: Geopolitical risk is now a core factor, tied to tariffs and compliance. Aerospace and defense require scenario planning for policy changes and conflicts. Diversify sourcing regions to mitigate sanctions and trade duties. Digital and Physical Security: Threats include both physical cargo theft/freight fraud and sophisticated cyber security breaches targeting operations (OT). An attack on a 3PL or tech supplier (common in high-tech) can halt the chain. Invest in protocols covering digital and physical movement. Ethical & Legal Due Diligence: Pressure is high to ensure clean supply chains. Avoiding companies involved in slavery and/or money laundering requires rigorous checks. Non-compliance is a massive reputational and legal risk for sectors like pharma and energy. Climate-Informed Logistics: Weather risk is rising; use climate science in network design. In regions prone to typhoons or earthquakes, pre-qualify alternative routes, hold strategic buffer stock, and invest in resilient infrastructure. Transparency is Compliance: Achieving transparency and traceability is vital for issues like corruption and ethical sourcing. Modern tools (AI) are essential to trace components. This guarantees provenance for high-tech and ensures regulatory adherence for energy firms. Proactive Risk Modeling: Move beyond reaction to proactive risk modeling. Synthesize data (financial, geopolitical, ethical) to create risk scores for partners. This allows sectors like defense to build resilience by dual-sourcing and stress-testing their networks. ‘So-called turmoil or shortcomings in my life? I turn them into power or energy'Best known for playing the serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 thriller ‘The Silence of the Lambs', Sir Anthony's journey to Hollywood stardom started with humble beginnings.Born into a working class family in the Welsh steel town of Port Talbot in 1937, his parents first ran a bakery, and then later a pub. Their strong work ethic was imparted on their son, who, despite struggling socially and educationally in his early years, was determined to make a success of himself. Throwing himself into reading and creative pastimes like music and art, Sir Anthony studied at both the Welsh Royal College of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy for Dramatic Art.His early career saw him working alongside greats including Katharine Hepburn, Lawrence Olivier, Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole across both stage and screen, with his international breakout coming in the 1980 film ‘The Elephant Man', which received multiple Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. It would be another decade before he truly cemented his place as a Hollywood A-lister: playing the infamous serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter, regarded by many critics as one of the greatest film villains of all-time. The role won him the first of his two Oscars, with the second coming for his performance in the 2020 film ‘The Father'.But the 87-year-old's long journey to the very top was not only a professional struggle, but at times a personal struggle too, having also battled alcoholism early on in his career - which he says made him a difficult person to work with.Thank you to the Culture team for their help in making this programme.
