The Miami Dolphins and right tackle Austin Jackson agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension worth up to $39 million on Thursday. Cat joins the show to discuss the decision to sign Jackson to a new deal after exceeding expectations throughout his fourth NFL season. With Jackson under contract, Christian Wilkins, Robert Hunt, Connor Williams, and Andrew Van Ginkel remain as soon-to-be free agents — can Chris Grier extend any other players before the season ends? We also run through the must-see matchups this weekend and decode our rooting interests as Dolphins fans. (........ Go Bills..............) Josh and I will drop a preview podcast over the weekend, but I had to pull him and Marek back into the studio to give a 20-minute recap of Hard Knocks, which you can find as a bonus at the end of this episode. Well we finally got a chance to speak with Marek Smith, who is the North American Fire Director for the Nature Conservancy and the co-director of the Fire Networks, which houses the Fire Adapted Learning Network, the Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) and the Fire Learning Networks. Before I get too far into this intro, I do want to note that the Fire Network has a new website that is a veritable clearinghouse of good fire resources, knowledge and anecdotes—I highly recommend you go check it out!New Fire Networks Website!!Marek has quite a background of working in good fire implementation and policy, and recently represented 501 c3 organizations with expertise in forest management and environmental conservation on the Wildfire Commission which released its report and recommendations back in September. In his role with the Nature Conservancy, Marek works to, quite simply, bring fire to the people while leading an organization that prioritizes our collective relationship with fire. All of TNC's programming through the Fire Networks is focused on developing more avenues for people to connect with fire, whether by exchanging knowledge/training, sharing resources or empowering individuals and communities to build resilience to or change their relationships with fire.We covered some ground with this one—not only about his role in the Wildfire Commission, but also his work with the Fire Networks, Amanda's experience at her first TREX back in October, and the future of the Fire Networks. This was such a fun conversation that was a long time coming, and we were left feeling like we could have talked to Marek for much, much longer than we did! Maybe a part two is in order....Don't forget to check out the Fire Networks' new website! You can also learn more about the new partnership between the Nature Conservancy and the Forest Service here. I use it for long days on my mountain bike, and also recently used it basically as a purse during a three-week trip backpacking around Italy. There are many thyroid ‘hot topics' once you start digging into thyroid health information. Which guru do you follow? What action do you take? How do you apply what you learn to your own unique health situation.I've been storing up a few of these hot topics for my guest Marek Doyle because I know he's all over the nuance. He understands the grey between the black and white. He's data driven and detail oriented. He's also incredibily generous with his time – this being the longest interview I've done and whilst I don't want to get into a habit of going over the hour, this was worth it!So, in this conversation we (meaning Marek!) tackle:Thyroid Antibodies Don't Matter (common medical perspective) and they don't cause destruction to the thyroid gland.Keto is great for thyroid health v keto is terrible for thyoid health.Low carb is great for thyroid health v you need carbs for production of T3 therefore low carb is bad.Fasting is a must for all health conditions (including not being a problem for thyroid patients) v fasting is too stressful and shouldn't be used by thyroid patients.Ozempic/semaglutitde is the new wonder drug for weight loss v Ozempic is next ‘I told you so' in 5 years time. There are many other thyroid hot topics, but I'll save them for another podcast! If you have any thyroid hot topics you'd like to find the nuance in, please let me know for a future episode!.Marek is a functional nutritional therapist who has spent the last 18 years building a model of personalized nutrition, based on the data of over 3,000 individual outcomes, 11,000 test results and extensive use of the scientific literature. Lukt het Tusk daadwerkelijk om een regering te vormen? En kan hij de rechtstaat herstellen nadat PiS jarenlang de scepter zwaaide? Te gast is Polen-deskundige Marek van de Watering. The Miami Dolphins leveraged a perfectly timed bye week to rest up before finishing the season with five of the final eight games at home. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle struggled with injuries early in the year and used the bye week to get his 'body right.' Considering the return of River Cracraft, we look at who will claim the wide receiver No. 3 position over the second half of the season as Miami looks for answers beyond Waddle and Tyreek Hill. Miami struggled to force turnovers in the first half of the season. Four players tied for a team-high one interception as Miami features a -4 turnover differential through eight weeks. We ask if Bradley Chubb, with four forced fumbles and six sacks, is the key to a turnover turnaround. We wrap the show by hitting on the fact that Miami tried out six players this week, including guard Andrew Norwell. General manager Chirs Grier continues his search for diamonds in the rough to improve the roster. On October 15, Poles were called to the polls—no pun intended. The ruling Law & Justice party—or PiS in its Polish acronym—came first with a plurality of ballots and parliamentary seats, but fell short of a majority. As a result, after eight years of rule, PM Mateusz Morawiecki's party will likely be replaced by a large and disparate coalition that ranges from the far-left to the right-of-center, helmed by former PM Donald Tusk of Civic Platform. Today we will cover the race's aftermath and its implications for Europe. Are Poland's positions on Ukraine and NATO as immutable as they seem? Is the country about to mend fences with the EU, and unfreeze the approximately €100 billion in post-Covid recovery funds currently withheld by Brussels over concerns about so-called “democratic backsliding”? More importantly, will Tusk's agenda be undermined by holdouts from the previous government across the civil service and state-controlled corporations? To unpack the meaning of Poland's result, we are honored to have with us the consultant and veteran commentator of all things Polish Marek Matrazek back with us this week, along with Warsaw-based Belgian historian David Engels. As always, please rate and review Uncommon Decency on whatever platform you use and send us your comments or questions either on Twitter at @UnDecencyPod or by e-mail at email@example.com. We also wanted to take a moment to apologise for launching this new season belatedly. We will flesh out what we have in store very soon! Enjoy the episode!

Such an oversight on my part to not have her join us before this. We chatted about her new book, The Warsaw Sisters, about what drew her to writing her last two books in Poland during WWII, What the Warsaw Uprising Was, and the role women played during the war. Patrons will get to hear when she first decided she wanted to be an author. The Warsaw Sisters by Amanda BarrattOn a golden August morning in 1939, sisters Antonina and Helena Dąbrowska send their father off to defend Poland against the looming threat of German invasion. The next day, the first bombs fall on Warsaw, decimating their beloved city and shattering the world of their youth. When Antonina's beloved Marek is forced behind ghetto walls along with the rest of Warsaw's Jewish population, Antonina turns her worry into action and becomes a key figure in a daring network of women risking their lives to shelter Jewish children. Helena finds herself drawn into the ranks of Poland's secret army, joining the fight to free her homeland from occupation. But the secrets both are forced to keep threaten to tear the sisters apart--and the cost of resistance proves greater than either ever imagined.Shining a light on the oft-forgotten history of Poland during WWII and inspired by true stories of ordinary individuals who fought to preserve freedom and humanity in the darkest of times, The Warsaw Sisters is a richly rendered portrait of courage, sacrifice, and the resilience of our deepest ties.Get your copy of The Warsaw Sisters by Amanda Barratt.I'm Amanda—novelist, history nerd, and daughter of the King of kings. From an early age, as I wandered through a small-town library, my life has been shaped by countless stories—offerings of art from an author's heart to mine. I'm passionate about illuminating oft-forgotten facets of history—be it the story of a group of unsung heroes who fought for hope and humanity behind the walls of the Krakòw ghetto, the lives of the university students who stepped from the ranks of the silently complicit in Hitler's Germany, the love story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Maria von Wedemeyer, or the heroism and tragedy of the Warsaw Uprising. It thrills me to search for the snapshot in the sweeping panorama of a historical event, to delve into the quiet valor of ordinary individuals faced with extraordinary times.Though my novels and novellas span a variety of eras, I'm ceaselessly intrigued by the Second World War. In times of some of the greatest evil and inhumanity our world has ever known, there emerged glimmers of courage, resilience, and sacrifice. The juxtaposition of those fragments of light against the darkness is extraordinarily powerful and inspires me as I write.Research is one of my favorite parts of the novel-crafting process and my idea of the perfect vacation is a trip to a museum or historical landmark. I love stories that linger in the heart long after the last page, shelves brimming with books, and cherished moments with family and friends. And I love my readers! Friends like you who take the time to gather around my virtual coffee table. Visit Amanda Barratt's website.
If you've been anywhere on social media in the past six months, you've probably seen the stunning cover for The Warsaw Sisters by Amanda Barratt. The Warsaw Sisters takes a look at the Polish resistance through the lens of a special sister relationship. Listening to Amanda Barratt talking about her books, this one in particular, shows her great love for history, for strong, courageous people, and for the Lord and how He loves His people well, even (if not especially) in the difficult times. The movie I mentioned was Jakob the Liar with Robin Williams. Caveat: this is a HARD movie. An ugly one. And it should be. But I did have to offer a warning. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Marek Doyle. He has spent the last 17 years developing a model of individualized nutrition based on data from over 3,000 individual outcomes, 11,000 test findings, and significant utilization of the scientific literature. Marek is a functional nutritional therapist. In addition to his Academy training course for practitioners and enthusiasts in London, England, Marek offers one-on-one consultations for customers. He holds a Master of Science degree in Personalized Nutrition. Marek has always greatly respected and fascinated with the human body. He was always driven to nutritional therapy since it is the most fundamental aspect in impacting human biochemistry, and he has spent almost two decades improving his methods. Marek has an MSc in Personalized Nutrition (CNELM/Middlesex Uni), as well as a CertHE in Nutritional Medicine, a Diploma in Allergy and Environmental Therapy (BIAET) and a Diploma in Advanced Nutrition for Optimal Health (GBF/BCMA). His viewpoint is shaped by everything that can enable him to precisely pinpoint each person's major challenges and predict the result of any given option. It is shaped less by exact answers and more by asking the right questions, which are formed from his personal experiences, combining the mechanical knowledge taken from the scientific literature with the wisdom embedded in traditional healing systems, and by making observations gleaned from working directly with thousands of people. In this episode, Marek speaks about how our bodies can repair themselves so long as you identify the hurdles that prevent it from happening, the flaws of modern weight loss methods, the pros and cons of the ketogenic diet, how the mitochondria work under stress, and things you need to remember before going on a diet. [04:50] The Body's Self-Healing Factor The human body will solve its problems unless an obstacle is blocking the way towards healing. Finding out what that obstacle is is the key to overcoming certain health issues. Once these obstacles are taken away, everything becomes much easier for an individual. These interferences aren't easy to identify or solve, which is why it is up to everybody to identify what they are. [06:28] The Flaws of Popular Weight Loss Methods Many influencers, nutritionists, and dieticians claim that energy balance is the only thing you'll need to lose body fat. Calories in and out are a big deal; however, both can change. This concept is entirely dependent on the body not changing its energy usage all day which makes it very flawed. The calorie concept is deceptive because it works short-term for weight loss but not fat loss. There is a massive difference between these two. [12:00] The Pros and Cons of the Keto Diet Two camps are relevant to this diet. The first one is the people who preach that it's a revolution, and the other is the ones who oppose it due to their belief in its health risks. There is a lot of misconception that still exists about the Keto Diet. One of the most anti-inflammatory interventions available is the Ketogenic Diet. [24:47] What the Mitochondria Does When You Are Stressed There are three different types of stress: Mental and Emotional Stress, Physical Stress, and Chemical Stress. Being under any of these stresses will cause the Mitochondria to generate a ton of oxidative stress. The only thing greater than the human body's capability to handle stress is how far you can push it until it eventually fails. Oxidative stress due to the overworking of the Mitochondria will cause certain problems in the human body. [40:44] Things You Must Consider Before Trying Certain Diets There are many moving parts in the human body, making a perfect diet unrealistic. Doing certain diets and fasting is fine; however, you must consider your status and other options first. Stress, Immunocompromised bodies, your home's condition, and most importantly, your current health condition are some of the few things you need to be mindful of before starting a diet that will massively affect your body. It's always a matter of identifying the big stressors in your life. AND MUCH MORE! Listen to what Marek thinks about the disappointing loss as we figure out how to feel as the team heads into the BYE at the top of the AFC East with a 6-3 record. Today's episode features my conversation with bestselling, Christy Award winning author Amanda Barratt. Her latest novel, The Warsaw Sisters, released on Tuesday. Along with the new book, Amanda and I discussed the Polish Underground, the Warsaw Uprising, the Wola Massacre, and the network of women that worked together to rescue Jewish children in Warsaw. There is so much to learn through this book and through my conversation with Amanda. Here's a description of The Warsaw Sisters: On a golden August morning in 1939, twin sisters Antonina and Helena Dąbrowska send their father off to defend Poland against the looming threat of German invasion. The next day, the first bombs fall on Warsaw, decimating their cherished city and shattering the world of their youth. When her beloved Marek is forced behind ghetto walls along with the rest of Warsaw's Jewish population, Antonina knows she cannot stand by and soon becomes a key figure in a daring network of women risking their lives to shelter Jewish children. Meanwhile, Helena finds herself drawn into the ranks of Poland's secret army, joining the fight to free her homeland from occupation. But the secrets both are forced to keep threaten to tear the sisters apart—and the cost of resistance may prove greater than either ever imagined. Shining a light on the oft-forgotten history of Poland during WWII and inspired by true stories of ordinary individuals who fought to preserve freedom and humanity in the darkest of times, The Warsaw Sisters is a richly rendered portrait of courage, sacrifice, and the resilience of our deepest ties. Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle battled through injury in Sunday's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The NFL trade deadline is just a week away and we're wondering if the Miami Dolphins will look to improve the roster ahead of 4 p.m. on Oct. 31. The Dolphins are dealing with a handful of injuries in the trenches, so will Miami use the rest of it's cap space to bring in offensive linemen? We've seen general manager Chris Grier land big-time players in the past... maybe he will take the biggest swing possible and go for Aaron Donald! (... probably not). The Miami Dolphins became much scarier on Wednesday as Jalen Ramsey returned to practice for the first time since suffering a knee injury in training camp. Stop in to hear when we expect Ramsey may play and what his role will be in Vic Fangio's defense. Speaking of the defense, we look at Andrew Van Ginkel and how he stays on the field with Jaelan Phillips inching closer to full health. It wouldn't be a Dolphins podcast without highlighting the league's top-rated offense. We see the love quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is getting, and some believe Tyreek Hill should be in the MVP conversation. That said — WHAT ABOUT RAHEEM MOSTERT? We also scan the injury report as the Dolphins prepare to play the Eagles on Sunday Night Football. Former sixth-round pick DeShon Elliot was originally an afterthought for Miami's defense in 2023 — how quickly things can change. The Dolphins have been without Elliot once this season, Miami's loss against the Buffalo Bills. Through four games, Elliot has allowed just two receptions on seven targets and has only missed three tackles since moving to South Florida. While most expected Brandon Jones to return as a starter, Elliot may be the best free-agent signing Miami made in free agency. Issues on the offensive line haunted the Miami Dolphins for roughly a decade, but it seems like the franchise has finally turned the page. Drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Austin Jackson had a bumpy start to his career but is turning into a quality starter at right tackle. Jackson had his best performance of the season against the New York Giants and has been consistent all season. He surrendered four pressures in week one but only one sack since playing against the Chargers. Miami's offensive line is doing plenty of heavy lifting, and Jackson deserves credit for his improved play in his fourth season. Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb began the season as Miami's 1-2 punch at passrusher, but Andrew Van Ginkel has taken advantage of each opportunity he steps on the field. Due to injuries, the former fifth-round pick has played more than 50 snaps three times this season. While he leads the team with four sacks, Andrew Van Ginkel has also shined in pass coverage and as a sound tackler. The Dolphins are beginning to get healthy, but it's hard to imagine taking Van Ginkel out of the equation.
