The South African Police Service met with the Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia yesterday in Pretoria to brief him on national and provincial plans aimed at ensuring the demonstrations are conducted safely and peacefully. Senior SAPS ballistics analyst, Captain Lawrence Makgotloe, has been granted bail of R15 000 in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. Makgotloe face several charges including defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of a firearm and being an accessory to murder after the fact. The State alleges he intentionally manipulated ballistic evidence in high-profile murder cases, including the killings of Armand Swart and DJ Sumbody to shield suspects. The Democratic Alliance says IPID in KwaZulu-Natal is overwhelmed, handling over 8000 cases with only 24 investigators. The party says this includes 426 deaths linked to police action over two years but just six convictions were secured. DA NCOP member Mzamo Billy says serious delays and docket tracking problems between IPID, the NPA and SAPS are undermining accountability. A deadly crash on Steve Biko Road in Gezina, Pretoria, last month has led to allegations of police involvement in illegal street racing. 22-year-old Phillip Bezuidenhout, died when a Honda Ballade collided with another car during a drag race. AfriForum's Private Prosecution Unit says new evidence suggests some SAPS officers may have organised or ignored weekly races at the site. The unit has submitted footage and documents to police and is calling for a full investigation into possible complicity. SAPS says a case of culpable homicide is underway against one driver. The Afrika Mayibuye Movement has repeated its call for Crime Intelligence's Major-General Firoz Khan and Hawks officer Major-General Ebrahim Kadwa to be suspended. The two were arrested last month for allegedly releasing a businessman caught with unwrought gold. The Madlanga Commission also heard claims they interfered in the 2021 Aeroton drug bust probe. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the suspension of nine police officers who served as members of the Bid Evaluation Committee (BEC) in relation to the Medicare 24 tender process. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements has welcomed the swift arrest of three armed security guards accused of attacking an e-hailing driver and several women in KwaNdengezi. The arrests followed intervention by MEC Siboniso Duma, who has praised the coordinated response by law enforcement, including SAPS teams led by Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, as well as Operation Shanela, the Road Traffic Inspectorate, and Durban Metro Police. The family of slain Madlanga Commission witness Marius Van Der Merwe has welcomed the Brakpan Magistrate's Court's decision to DENY bail his alleged shooter, Matipandile Sotheni. The court has found that the state has a prima facie case against the accused. Sotheni faces 16 charges—including murder and conspiracy to commit murder—linked to the fatal shooting of Van der Merwe in in front of his family outside their Brakpan home in December last week. The Prosecutor has argued that Sotheni is a flight risk and presented contradictory information in his bail affidavits. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC reporter Culvin Mabasa

With the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry restoring people's faith in commissions, Dr Zizamele Cebekhulu-Makhaza, Chairman of the Safer South Africa Foundation, tells Chris Steyn why the Madlanga Commission has been so effective in sharp contrast with the Zondo Commission. He describes the impact on both the SAPS and the criminal underworld of the unprecedented Press Conference in which KZN Provincial Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi stunned the country with charges of police and political capture. “He helped this country in various ways. In fact, he took this country……out of mud to bring… the information to those who have got the capacity to clean the country…we want the President to deal with this matter in a very decisive way. We expect him as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to act very decisively on the matters that the Madlanga Commission are dealing with.” As for the other pillars of the Criminal Justice Cluster, Dr Cebekhulu-Makhaza says: “...There is a problem in the Department of Justice… the underworld has infiltrated them...the Department of Justice must not try to...…hide what Mkhwanazi has revealed because everybody knows what has happened. I'm happy that Madlanga...will overlap into those terrains and reveal to us what is happening in those terrains and also in Correctional Services.” Dr Cebekhulu-Makhaza outlines in detail all the urgent reforms needed to restore credibility, accountability and operation effectiveness with the criminal justice system.
