The Democratic Alliance (DA) has drawn up a 10-point plan to deal with farm attacks. In this interview with BizNews, Ian Cameron, the DA spokesperson on Police, says the plan will be submitted to the Minister of Police “and there's a lot of engagement ahead of us regarding rural safety”. The plan includes the establishment of a specialised Rural Safety Unit within SAPS; the strengthening of rural crime intelligence; fixing the criminal justice system with prosecution-led investigations; treating farm murders as targeted, premeditated crimes; declaring farm attacks and stock theft as priority crimes; institutionalising partnerships with local stakeholders; equipping SAPS with forensic tools and skilled investigators; rebuilding trust between police and rural communities; supporting emerging farmers; and opposing Expropriation Without Compensation. “I think what's really positive is the fact that Parliament officially recognises that we've got a problem in rural safety and we shouldn't get distracted by definitions of just what kind or just who specifically always is influenced. The point is, farm attacks have been recognised. Farm murders are recognised. We have a crisis, we need to address it and it's got a significant influence on sustainability in the country.”
In this week’s Parliament: Week in Review, Tara Roos and Lester Kiewit unpack a range of critical developments, from legal battles to budget decisions and police accountability. The Western Cape High Court dismissed the EFF’s urgent application to halt a fuel levy hike, a ruling the party denounced as undermining democratic checks on taxation. The EFF has vowed to escalate its fight both legally and in Parliament. Meanwhile, Parliament’s finance committee adopted the 2025 Budget’s fiscal framework, with the ANC and DA finding rare common ground to approve it—despite earlier tensions. The EFF and MK parties opposed the framework, slamming it for fuelling austerity and failing to protect the poor. On the policing front, troubling figures emerged: 218 officers were dismissed for corruption over the past five years, but only 12 were criminally convicted. SAPS also revealed that it had conducted customer satisfaction surveys in 2021 and 2023, claiming the data is being used to guide improvements in service delivery and strategic planning. Joan: [1:36] Doncs espera que en tinguin sis! Andreu: [1:42] Uf… Andreu: [2:16] Saps? I ho vam estat comentant i després el James va dir: "Sí, sí, penso això cada cop que sento una persona fer servir el mot 'criatura'. Joan: [3:13] Re, re, boicot, boicot. Police say investigations into the murder of Olorato Mongale are continuing and the search for suspects has reached a critical stage. Mongale was brutally murdered and dumped in a sidewalk in Lombardy, Johannesburg just two hours after she had informed her loved ones that she was going on a date at the weekend. The 30-year-old reportedly met the man in Bloemfontein, Free State, last week and they agreed to meet in Johannesburg. The student was last seen alive when she was picked up by a white VW polo outside her apartment. SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, says there is a syndicate that targets women at malls. The perpetrators approach them, request to take them out on dates, and then rob them.

In this encore episode, we detail the intestinal mycobiome and the mechanisms by which beneficial microbes aid in regulating opportunistic fungal species: Candida albicans. We discuss Candida overgrowth virulence and how disruptions in microbial balance, immune function, and epithelial integrity impact Candida's pathogenicity. Additionally, we discuss the role of mast cells in the lamina propria, their involvement in mucosal immunity, and how Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) can be exacerbated by fungal dysbiosis / microbial imbalances.Topics: 1. Introduction - The intestinal mycobiome and its role in intestinal health. - Regulating populations of opportunistic fungal species like Candida albicans.- Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) intro. 2. Structure of the Intestinal Barrier- The microbiome and mucus layer: microbes, mucins, antimicrobial peptides, sIgA.- The epithelial monolayer: enterocytes, goblet cells, Paneth cells, enteroendocrine cells…- Tight junction proteins and paracellular transport.- The lamina propria beneath the epithelium: immune cells and more. 3. Candida's Pathogenicity and Barrier Disruption- Exists primarily in its yeast form, regulated by microbial competition, host immune defenses, antifungal peptides. - Secretory IgA (sIgA) and immune surveillance mechanisms help regulate fungal populations. - Chronic stress, immune suppression, and dysbiosis can deplete sIgA, increasing susceptibility to Candida proliferation. - Environmental triggers such as immune suppression, microbial depletion, inflammatory cytokines.- Yeast-to-hyphal transition, deeper tissue invasion. - Secreted aspartyl proteinases (SAPs), phospholipases, candidalysin: epithelial damage.- Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) and overgrowth detection. 4. Impact of Beneficial Bacteria on Candida Overgrowth - Beneficial bacteria compete with Candida for nutrients and epithelial adhesion sites. - Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by beneficial bacteria.- Depletion of beneficial bacteria removes ecological resistance, allowing Candida to proliferate unchecked. 5. Mast Cells in the Lamina Propria and Their Role in Intestinal Immunity- Mast cell location - Upon activation, mast cells release histamine, cytokines, proteases, and more that regulate gut immune responses. - Histamine can increase gut permeability and modulate local immune activation. - Tryptase and chymase. - Pro-inflammatory cytokines. 6. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) - Mast cell hyperactivation.- Environmental triggers, toxins, chronic infections, and stress. - Candida overgrowth and mast cell activation.- Addressing microbial imbalances and reducing the body's total microbial, chemical, and toxin burden.- A diverse microbiome. 7. Conclusion- Candida overgrowth and regulation via immune defenses and beneficial bacterial competition.- MCAS, root cause approach.Get Chloe's Book Today! Transcripció Andreu: [0:15] Bon dia a tothom! Bon dia, Sílvia! Sílvia: [0:17] Bon dia, Andreu! Andreu: [0:19] Com va això? Sílvia: [0:20] Bé, i tu? Si tot i així no saps què vol dir, llavors ja te l'explicaré. Sílvia: [2:44] D'acord. Andreu: [2:44] Si l'endevines sense context, tindràs dos punts per aquella paraula. Amb context, un punt. I si te l'he d'explicar, òbviament, zero punts. Sílvia: [2:54] Almenys no resta. Andreu: [2:56] Almenys no resta, exacte. D'acord. Per tant, comencem? Sílvia: [3:02] Vinga!
