Joan: [0:16] Bon dia, Andreu! Andreu: [0:18] I bon any! Joan: [0:19] Bon any, bon any! Andreu: [0:20] Bon any nou. Joan: [0:36] Bon any, bon any. I l'he descobert de gran. Andreu: [2:33] Una altra mentida, no? Joan: [2:35] No, i et deien: "No, si ja t'ho he dit, tants nassos com dies falten perquè s'acabi l'any!" No ho sé, no ho sé, eh? Segurament no ens escoltarà ningú, avui. Joan: [0:29] Espero, espero. I diu: "No". I dic: "..." Andreu: [1:10] Doncs ja t'ho ensenyaran a l'escola, no? No sé si l'has vist. I dic: "Mmm..." In this interview with Chris Steyn, Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Nicholas Gotsell relates how he and colleagues uncovered a critical shortage of rape kits with many police stations having none or ones that have expired. He slams SAPS Western Cape management for providing grossly inflated, factually incorrect and completely misleading numbers. “And unfortunately, in the Western Cape, we sit with a provincial Police Commissioner who just does not answer emails or requests for information, even from the media.” Gotsell - who vows to continue with unannounced spot checks - describes the implication for rape survivors who rely on time-senstitive forensic evidence to have their attackers convicted. Meanwhile, he shares some advice of rape victims who find themselves affected by the shortage.

In the latest edition of the NdB Sunday Show, Chris Steyn speaks to Action Society's Juanita du Preez about policing in South Africa since 1994. She rates the ministers and commissioners from good to terrible over three decades tainted by corruption, boards of inquiry, political purges, faction battles, cover-ups and policing policies that changed with every factional fight. “We can just summarise it as 30 years of cumulative decay. Crime intelligence was gutted by corruption, SAPS was militarised instead of professionalised, stations across South Africa became hollowed out, DNA forensics collapsed repeatedly…Political interference became normal and then they lost the public trust.” Du Preez also comments on the testimony of tenderpreneur Cat Matlala - particularly his allegations of corruption involving former Minister Bheki Cele, as well as the kidnapping of Ad Hoc Committee member MP Vushi Shongwe who was robbed of all his devices. Du Preez relates her court experience of the judge who has been arrested for corruption. And she gives her take on the latest crime statistics that show that 63 South Africans are murdered every day.

Joan: [0:17] Hola hola! Andreu: [0:18] Què, com has dormit aquests últims dies? Joan: [0:20] Doncs… millor. Andreu: [0:22] Sí? Me n'alegro. Joan: [0:56] No l'he sentit, però vaig veure… I jo vaig dir: "Massa tard", i llavors us vaig enviar l'episodi de pòdcast. Massa coses. I em vaig posar a escriure… Joan: [3:01] No, et va sortir una introducció… Quin poeta! Vinga! Joan: [3:40] Va, va, va. Va! Silvestre: [3:41] Hola hola! Bon dia! Bon dia a tothom! Vinga, adeu adeu! So he doesn't have that protection.” Du Preez also comments on the police revelations today that a close associate of suspended Deputy Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya has 29 cases against him - and that a SAPS employee had accessed the Criminal Records system to make adjustments to his records. “I am so happy that the connection he had…who fiddled with his record, wasn't smart enough to change it on the back end as well, because that is where the information is now coming from. It's still on there. So you can delete it in the front, but it stays in the back. Now we can pinpoint, this person was the one pressing the button.” As for the excuses NPA Chief Shamila Batohi came up with before the Ad Hoc Committee for not yet bringing the Guptas to justice, Du Preez charges: “These are the people who stole South Africa to the brink of poverty and created a culture for other people to follow in their footsteps. And it's not urgent for you.”

In his latest interview with BizNews, Ian Cameron, the Chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police and the Democratic Alliance's Police Spokesperson, talks to Chris Steyn about the Madlanga Commission and Parliament Ad Hoc Committee hearings and some of the key players, including former Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and suspended Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya. As for tenderpreneurs like Cat Matlala and Hangwani Maumela, Cameron states: “The only way for organised crimes and these types of persons or entities to flourish is when the State is involved at a very senior level… It worries me that some people implicated are still in their positions or mentioned or continuing to work.” Cameron also details the horror findings on his recent oversight visit to Nelson Mandela Bay where the Flying Squad only has one vehicle, a single cab bakkie with over 300,000 kilometers. As for irregular expenditure of over R650 million in SAPS in the past financial year, Cameron says it “points to a much more deeply rooted corruption-and-fraud network that has been built in supply chain management and procurement”. He charges that “all of these things” add up to a picture of “leadership collapse- and urges: “…if we don't replace a large number of the so-called leaders, nothing can change on the ground”.
