Longtime music fans were thrilled recently when Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder shouted out a legendary Victoria music venue. Harpo's Cabaret closed in 1995, but fans still reminisce about shows they saw there. So what made Harpo's so special? And what would the ideal music venue look like in 2024? We ask local musician, and Seaside Music Festival artistic director, Oliver Swain.
A tribute to the wonderful Texas singer songwriter Nanci Griffith, who passed away last week. So sad about her. Some tasty new sounds from Vancouver, Ireland, Denmark, and USA, plus a tribute to the amazing spirit of the people of Haiti and the women of Afghanistan. A few Rogue Relaunch artists, and a tip of the hat to Victoria's incredible singer and bassist / banjoist Oliver Swain, who I saw perform in Gibsons BC the other night. My first LIVE concert since March 2020!

The Belfry Theatre's Manager of Artistic and Community Connections Taiwo Afolabi joins us to talk about a June 11 meeting of Indigenous, Black and People of Colour (IBPOC) Artists and Cultural Administrators in the Capital Regional District that has been in the works since April, but has taken on a new sense of urgency given recent protests and actions in North America and around the world focused on anti-Black racism. Plus a look at what we are watching (29:10), including Pacific Opera Victoria's Flight of the Hummingbird and Atomic Vaudeville's latest virtual cabaret, as well as some venues and events that might actually get you away from a computer screen (39:50), including the reopening of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the Royal BC Museum, and the Vic Theatre, Oliver Swain's physically distanced outdoor concerts, and Coffeehouse Theatre's CoffeeMakers Festival.

Another lovely spring evening on the West Coast: hope this finds you dear listeners all well and in fine fettle. Tonight's Vinyl Vault was dedicated to Joni Mitchell, still in hospital at the time of this writing, and was side 2 of her debut LP. I also had a chance to chat with Oliver Swain, multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire from Vancouver Island, about his project "Tower of Song", a tribute to Leonard Cohen. He's taking it on tour this spring, starting with a Centennial Theatre (North Van) show April 10.Have a lovely Easter weekend, all, and I'll be back next week with 2 more kumbaya-free hours!cheers, and thanks for listening.Val folkoasis@gmail.com
New music, upcoming shows, great stuff, new music, upcoming shows, great stuff, new music, upcoming shows, great stuff! sure, things get a little routine around here, but why not? There’s always great new stuff, there’s always great upcoming shows, and we’ve got a huge well to draw out great songs from the past! Sounds good to me!

Aug. 1 was the second night of Vancouver's annual fireworks competition, so several songs along that theme were sprinkled throughout the evening. Musical tribute was paid to Jerry Garcia, who would have turned 70 on this day. Tonight's interviews involved the upcoming FolkWest festival in Victoria, from perspectives of the artistic director (Oliver Swain) and a performing musician (David Newberry). Please support this new festival, which takes place Aug. 11 + 12: http://folkwest.ca/Cheers, and many thanks for listening!val folkoasis@gmail.com
