On this episode, Keith & Geoff welcome Marvin Etzioni into Thunderlove Studio - he is also known as the Mandolin Man. Etzioni is best known as a founder and bassist for the band Lone Justice. He is also a noted songwriter, composer, and record producer. He has released three solo albums in addition to performing with loads of artists. In 1982, Etzioni met Ryan Hedgecock, who shared his love for country and roots music. Hedgecock was already performing with Maria McKee. Hedgecock and McKee asked Etzioni to back them on bass duties, along with drummer Don Heffington and the band Lone Justice was launched. Etzioni was a member of Lone Justice from 1983 to 1986, during which he encouraged them to write original material, and contributed the songs "East of Eden," "Working Late," "You Are the Light," and "Soap, Soup and Salvation" (written with McKee). Marvin has produced for numerous artists, including Peter Case, Counting Crows, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Etzioni's compositions have been covered by Cheap Trick, Victoria Williams, Julie Miller and Judy Collins. Etzioni produced and wrote songs with the Williams Brothers (Andy Williams' nephews Andrew and David). Together with David Williams, Etzioni co-wrote "Can't Cry Hard Enough" which became his most successful song. In the 1990s, Etzioni recorded and released three albums: The Mandolin Man (1991), Bone (1992) and Weapons of the Spirit (1994).Etzioni employs the analog-vinyl-digital (AVD) technique, in which his master tapes are converted first to vinyl, and the vinyl is recorded to digital for the final product. In 2012, Etzioni released the 2-disc album Marvin Country on Nine Mile Records. On the album, which had been in development since 1985, Etzioni played mandolin, mandocello, guitar, bass, piano, Mellotron, porchboard and keyboards. Included are duets with Lucinda Williams ("Lay It on the Table"),Steve Earle ("Ain't No Work in Mississippi"), Richard Thompson ("It Don't Cost Much"), Buddy Miller ("Living Like a Hobo"), John Doe ("The Grapes of Wrath"), Maria McKee ("You Possess Me"), and the Dixie Hummingbirds ("You Are the Light"). For most songs, the backing band was Heffington (drums), Steve Fishell (pedal steel), Gurf Morlix (bass), Tammy Rogers (fiddle), and Buddy Miller and Duane Jarvis (guitar). Today you have the pleasure of learning more about Slade Cleaves. He picked these five records: SWORDFISHTROMBONES – TOM WAITS NEBRASKA - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN LIBRARY OF CONGRESS RECORDINGS - WOODY GUTHRIE MISSION OF THE CROSSROADS PALMS - STEVE FORBERT DEAR DANGER- BILLY HARVEY Joseph Hudak of Rolling Stone Country calls Cleaves “a master storyteller, one influenced not by the shine of pop-culture but by the dirt of real life.” While he released a handful of recordings during the early '90s, he gained significant notice with No Angel Knows, which was released on Rounder's Philo subsidiary in 1997. Joined by former Lucinda Williams guitarist and producer Gurf Morlix, and combined his interest in folk songs, early rock and roll, and traditional country music into an amalgamation of styles becoming known at that time as Americana. After reading in Rolling Stone about Bruce Springsteen's inspirations for the Nebraska album, he climbed into his parents' attic to rediscover the treasure trove of albums which he recalled hearing as a child – Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry - and which became his guide to becoming a stellar songwriter. After signing with Jimmy LaFave's Music Road Records, he issued Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away (2009, featuring liner notes from fan Stephen King), the two-disc Sorrow & Smoke: Live at the Horseshoe Lounge (2011), and Still Fighting the War (2013), produced by beloved Austin guitarist Scrappy Jud Newcomb. The album was praised as "one of the year's best albums" by American Songwriter and "carefully crafted, . . . songs about the struggles of the heart in hard times" by the Wall Street Journal. The New York Daily News called his music "a treasure hidden in plain sight," while the Austin Chronicle declared, "there are few contemporaries that compare. He's become a master craftsman on the order of Guy Clark and John Prine." I would like to mention that there are no advertisements in this podcast. My guest today is award winning singer-songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player, Ray Bonneville. When it comes to playing rack harmonica, Ray might just be as good as it gets. To accompany his truth telling lyrics, he's able to seamlessly pull off complicated finger picking patterns and play elaborate counter melodies on the harmonica between verses. Often called a “song and groove man,” Bonneville has lived the life of the itinerant artist. From his native Quebec, he moved to Boston at age twelve, where he learned English and picked up piano and guitar. Later, he served in Vietnam and earned a pilot's license in Colorado before living in Alaska, Seattle, and Paris. Six years in New Orleans infused his musical sensibilities with the region's culture and rhythms. And then, a close call while piloting a seaplane proved pivotal: After two decades working as a studio musician, playing rowdy rooms with blues bands, and living hard, Bonneville's lifetime of hard-won experience coalesced into an urge to write his own music. Ray recorded his first album, On the Main, in 1992. He's since released nine albums, earned wide critical and popular acclaim, and won an enthusiastic following in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His awards include a prestigious Juno, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy, for his 1999 album, Gust of Wind. In 2012, Ray won the solo/duet category in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge. His post-Katrina ode, “I Am the Big Easy,” earned the International Folk Alliance's 2009 Song of the Year Award, placed number one on Folk Radio's list of most-played songs of 2008, and was recently covered by Jennifer Warnes for the BMG label. Other notable artists who have recorded his songs include Ronnie Hawkins (“Foolish”) and Slaid Cleaves (“Run Jolee Run”). Ray has shared the bill with blues heavyweights Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Dr. John, J.J. Cale, and Robert Cray, and has guested on albums by Mary Gauthier, Gurf Morlix, Eliza Gilkyson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and other prominent musicians. He has performed at renowned venues around the world, including South by Southwest, Folk Alliance, and Montreal International Jazz Festival, and plays over 100 shows per year across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. When not on the road, he resides in Austin, Texas. During our conversation, we chat about his early life and first musical groups, his time in the military, life as a pilot, and the finer points of songwriting. The three original principal songwriters - Colin Brooks, Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist - shared the bill at Momo's, an Austin club.[1] Originally, each singer/songwriter performed his own set. However, they eventually started sharing the stage, and collaborating with bassist Seth Whitney. The Wednesday night series was billed as "The Good Time Supper Club". A misprint in a local paper billed the act as "The Heathens." Drummer John Chipman joined the band in 2007, and Keyboardist Trevor Nealon, who played in the studio during the recording of both "One Foot in the Ether" and "Top Hat Crown & the Clapmaster's Son", joined the touring unit in 2011.Their first recording, "Live from Momo's", recorded at the now closed club on West 6th Street in Austin brought the band national attention and they were voted "Best New Band" at the 2007 Austin Music Awards. Following the Momo's release, the band released a second live recording, the CD/DVD "Live at Antone's" which was recorded at the venerable Austin club.May 20, 2008 the band released their first, self-titled, studio album. Produced by Ray Wylie Hubbard, and featuring notable guests Patty Griffin, Stephen Bruton, and Gurf Morlix, the record went to #1 on the Americana Music Association's radio charts. In November 2008 the album was ranked 8th place on the Americana Music Association's Top 100 Albums of the Americana Charts for 2008.[2]In July 2009 BOH taped an Austin City Limits show that aired in the Fall of 2009. The year was especially significant for ACL in that Austin City Limits was celebrating its 35th anniversary year. The band's unique genesis and creativity were highlighted during the Austin City Limits interview conducted after their performance.[3] The TV performance showcased a set by both the Band Of Heathens and Elvis Costello.[4]

My guest today is Gurf Morlix. Gurf is an Austin- based guitar player, composer and record producer who has worked with Warren Zevon, Lucinda Williams, Blaze Foley, and Michael Penn, among many others. In this episode, Gurf tells us about his upbringing in Buffalo, NY and his fateful decision one day to choose the city of Austin over the city of Boston. This led him down the vast roadway of the music industry as a top guitarist, producer, and songwriter. Among other things, we chat about his passion to create songs as if each is an individual piece of physical art. We also find out how he feels about the perfect blend of country and rock woven into his guitar skills. Gurf recounts his days with Lucinda Williams and how he produced her records, as well as exactly how the band got the final take of the song Change The Locks. It was a great pleasure to speak with Gurf and it was my honor to have him as my guest on the show. I hope you enjoy! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/brian-doherty8/support

Linda McRae is getting ready to release a great new solo recording "Going to the Well" (October 1). The new album actually came out of house concert put on by fellow singer-songwriter Deni Gauthier in St Thomas ON, who suggested that Linda might like to record a few tracks in his studio. What followed is a new stripped down recording that's really just Linda McRae singing with her guitar or banjo, alongside some great cameos from Gurf Morlix and Bill Kirchen on guitar and backing vocals, Deni Gauthier on guitar and duet vocal, and Shara Gustafson on backing vocals. The new album features solo versions of three Linda McRae songs from her 2015 "Shadow Trails" album, a new lovely Linda McRae and Kelly Kessler co-write, with a poignant political message, "Empty", and some wonderful covers including solo banjo versions of David Bowie's "Heroes" and "Ashes to Ashes", Richard Thompson's "Dimming of the Day", Bill Kirchen's "Man in the Bottom of the Well" and Willie P Bennett's "Caney Fork River". We caught up with Linda McRae at home in Nashville to chat about the new album. For more information about the music of Linda McRae and upcoming tour dates, visit https://lindamcrae.com. Music: Linda McRae "Ashes to Ashes", "Empty", "Man in the Bottom of the Well" and "Dimming of the Day" from "Going to the Well" (2019, 42 RPM).

(See videos of Jimmy here) The last few years we’ve been in the studio with Jimmy, recording a cut with him on his Jackson Browne Tribute album, and two songs on his most recent album release. Back in the 80’s my high school best friend and I would take our strings downtown and sit in at the Chicago House open mike frequently hosted by Jimmy Lafave. Years later I ran into Jimmy at a live KGSR radio tribute to Bob Dylan; from that radio show the first season of Strings Attached was born. Here are a few songs I arranged for that first show back in 2001:Never is a MomentWhen It Starts to Rain (KUT Radio Appearance)Jimmy LaFave was born in Wills Point, Texas, a small town 30 miles east of Dallas. He began school down the road in Mesquite and by Junior High was making music perched behind his Sears & Roebuck drum kit. It wasn’t long before his mother traded a drawer full of green stamps for his first guitar and the switch to singer–songwriter was in progress. His family later moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he finished high school. Although he has lived in Austin for over 20 years, many people think of him as being from Oklahoma, because of his strong musical ties to the state and what he often refers to as its “red dirt music.” It was in this landscape that he began to define his sound and soak up a combination of his experiences among authentic songwriters from the tradition of Woody Guthrie. Before leaving Oklahoma for Austin, Jimmy did some independent recording and toured the southwest with the first version of his band Night Tribe. Austin producer/songwriter Gurf Morlix talks about working with Warren Zevon, Lucinda Williams, and Slaid Cleaves, the Blaze Foley tribute project, and his recent solo records. See the notes and links to go with this episode at http://www.michaelgaither.com.
We’re all about the big shows and one big new project today. Previews of some stellar upcoming events, and then a chat with Jaxon Haldane about The Willie P Bennett Legacy Project, which aims to protect and promote the amazing, but under-appreciated legacy of the late, great Willie P Bennett. This is truly a wonderful project, and one that I can’t endorse highly enough. Please check it out: www.willieplegacy.com
February 1 marked 25 years since the tragic death of one of the great, unsung songwriting heroes of all time, Blaze Foley. His reputation has grown over the course of those years, thanks to friends and fans who have sung his songs and spread the word, but there’s still more to be done. We’re doing our part today with a retrospective of some great Blaze covers and of course some from the man himself. Plus, we’re joined by a very special guest, Blaze’s good friend and musical partner for many years, the great Gurf Morlix!

It’s the end of the year (soon) as we know it, and we feel fine. Time to start thinkin’ about Christmas and those pesky year-end lists – a little bit of both on tonight’s show. Plus, T-Bar is in with some of his usual off-the-wall picks.

We’re pre-recorded this week, live from the living room, so Jeremy stops in, and we also dig down deep in the basement for some classics that I don’t regularly lug down to the station. We start things off with a birthday tribute to Mary Gauthier, before moving on to some songs from her former producer Gurf Morlix, as well as their collaborator, Patty Griffin. We’ve got some more great collaborations, and a look ahead to shows featuring Sprit of the West and New Country Rehab.

Today we pay tribute to Blaze Foley & Gurf Morlix, as well as visits with Greg Brown and the Thompson family. For hour 2, it’s a Johnny Cash Birthday Bash, as The Man in Black would have turned 80 today, and that’s reason enough to celebrate his (ever)lasting musical legacy.

It’s our last show of the year, and the official release of the annual compilations. It was another jam-packed year of great music, so we couldn’t fit it into our usual 1.5 hour time slot, so we’re doubling that and going a full 3 hours!

One of our favourite bands, Sunparlour Players, released a new record this week, and it’s a gem. That led us off into previewing some other great roots rockin’ bands who return to town soon. We’ve got a few classics and a birthday song to end off the show.
It’s St. Patty’s Day, but no green beer for us, just great songs from & about Ireland. We’ve also got some great new music, music for Japan, and a set of classics set off by listener Ron from Lockport, who calls to reveal the “truth” about the Bev Oda scandal, again!

More great upcoming shows this week?!?! What's going on in Winnipeg? This week we're treated to Justin Rutledge, Dave Lang/Carolyn Mark, Jill Barber, and the long awaited Romi Mayes/Gurf Morlix show! Even with all of that on our minds, we still found time for some great new music.

A special pre-recorded segment of Steel Belted Free Range Radio featuring Romi Mayes & Gurf Morlix. Romi is one of the brightest stars on the horizon in Winnipeg and beyond. Her last album Sweet Something Steady catapulted her from local fave to international darling, and that has a lot to do with the legendary producer she hired to shape the album. I've been following Gurf Morlix for years, ever since I noticed that his name appeared on many of my favourite albums. Since then, I discovered that he's more than just a great producer, he's a great musician as well. I was lucky enough to meet him and get to know him a bit when Romi first brought him to town a couple of years ago, and I found out then that he's a very intelligent, very personable, totally interesting guy as well. At that time we were treated to a couple of live performances of songs that were later released on what is by far his greatest accomplishment as a singer/songwriter, Diamonds to Dust. I was knocked out then, because even though I was such a fan and so familiar with his talent and track record, I underestimated him as a singer/songwriter. Never again, I thought. Well, I was expecting great things, but when he came in late Monday night and played me the first song from his upcoming CD, Last Exit to Happyland, I knew he'd raised the bar that much higher. That powerful performance alone would have made me put him way up high on my list of all time favourite in-studio guests. But that's not all he did. Oh no. Just wait until you hear him do his version of Blaze Foley's classic "Cold Cold World." Quite honestly, perhaps my favourite musical moment on air so far.
Some great new music kicks us off in style, but from there it's another week of looking forward to some pretty stellar shows, including Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Fred Eaglesmith & Friends, and more!
