We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2017 conversation with Jimmy Webb. ABOUT JIMMY WEBBJimmy Webb emerged as a superstar songwriter and arranger in 1967 when two of his songs – The 5th Dimension's “Up, Up and Away” and Glen Campbell's “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” - were among the five nominees for the Grammy's Song of the Year award. He went on to write a string of major hits for Campbell, including “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” "Where's the Playground Susie,” “Honey Come Back,” and many others. Additionally, he penned “MacArthur Park,” which was a hit for a diverse range of artists, including Richard Harris, Waylon Jennings, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, and Donna Summer; “The Worst That Could Happen,” which was a Top 5 hit for The Brooklyn Bridge; “Didn't We,” which was recorded by Thelma Houston, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, and Barbra Streisand; “All I Know,” which became a Top 10 hit for Art Garfunkel; “The Moon's a Harsh Mistress,” which has been recorded by Joe Cocker, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, and Josh Groban; and “If These Walls Could Speak,” which was recorded by Glen Campbell, Amy Grant, Nanci Griffith, and Shawn Colvin. Others who've covered material from the Jimmy Webb songbook include Diana Ross, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, The Four Tops, Roberta Flack, The Temptations, The Association, Tom Jones, Dionne Warwick, Cass Elliot, Harry Nilsson, Nancy Wilson, Cher, Bob Dylan, The Everly Brothers, Nick Cave, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Sheena Easton, David Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, R.E.M., Aimee Mann, America, Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes, Peggy Lee, Bette Midler, James Taylor, Carrie Underwood, Dwight Yoakam, and The Highwaymen (consisting of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson), who took Jimmy's song “Highwayman” to #1, earning him a Grammy for Country Song of the Year. As an artist, he has released more than a dozen albums. One of the most celebrated songwriters on the planet, Jimmy is the only individual to win Grammy awards for music, lyrics, and orchestration. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Additionally, he has received ASCAP's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Influential Songwriter Award from the National Music Publishers Association, and the Academy of Country Music's prestigious Poets Award. In 2015 he was named among Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. Jimmy's memoir, The Cake and the Rain, details his formative years and early career through 1973. It's available now from St. Martin's Press.

We caught up with Rita Bliss while she was working hard in Dallas! We chatted about her recent release “Peaches and Apple Pies,” her monthly residency at Batch Brewing and Kolaches in Austin, TX and finding family at ‘the best bar in Texas.'   Rita Bliss is a folk musician from Rochester, New York and is now based in Austin Texas. Though a Rust Belt native, Rita's melodies are rooted in familiar old-time banjo sounds that evoke travels along the backroads of the South. Influenced by John Prine, Joni Mitchell, and Nanci Griffith,Rita's songwriting weaves together timeless love stories with long drives, porch gatherings, and letters between loved ones. The love stories are unabashedly queer, the porch gatherings are sometimes rowdy, and the conversations often touch on true-to-life mental health challenges.  Check Rita out here:  Website: Ritabliss.com  Patreon: Rita Bliss  IG: ritablissbanjo  YouTube: Rita Bliss Banjo  Facebook: Rita Bliss Music

For a half dozen years beginning in the late 1990s, The Flood always greeted March's arrival with an annual road trip into the mountains. Providing an evening of music, jokes and stories, the band would entertain a roomful of visiting volunteers, kindly students who had come more than 600 miles from Milwaukee's Marquette University to use their spring break helping with assorted post-winter chores around the little mining town of Rhodell on Tams Mountain about 20 miles south of Beckley. As reported here earlier, from 1997 to 2002 The Flood's original three amigos — Joe Dobbs, David Peyton and Charlie Bowen — shared this weird, wonderful way to celebrate the coming of spring. To read more about these Tams Mountain adventures, click here. But, Hey, This is About a Song…Each year, party hostess Martha Thaxton never failed to ask the guys to play one particular tune before they left for their two-hour journey back to Huntington. It was a song that seemed to speak to Martha's own rambling soul as a die-hard folkie, a beloved Tom Paxton composition from his 1964 debut album for Elektra Records.“I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound” was a song Dave and Charlie knew well — they had played it with Roger Samples back in the old Bowen Bash days — so they were happy to dust it off for Martha and her visiting good samaritans. In the past 60 years Paxton's song has been recorded by everyone from The Mitchell Trio and The Kingston Trio to Tiny Tim and Dion (no, really!), from The Country Gentlemen and Country Joe to Doc Watson and Nanci Griffith. But surely the most touching rendition was Johnny Cash's recording of the song in his final session in February 2010.In a recent interview, Paxton noted that Cash used to come in The Gaslight back in the early 60s “in what we now know was his worst period. “He was skinny as a rail because of all the pills he was doing. He had not had his renaissance yet. But he was a gentle man. He was a direct man and he took you as you were. I just liked this man.”Paxton said he was “absolutely thrilled … to hear him sing the song. That's just a once in a lifetime kind of thrill.”Elijah Wald Blazed the TrailSpeaking of being thrilled, members of The Flood's crack research department are always overjoyed whenever they discover the blazed trails and rambling footprints of the incomparable Elijah Wald on some musical terrain they've come to explore. For nine years now, Wald's online “Songbiography” has been his musical memoir, giving history and personal reflection on some of his favorite songs, which often turn out to be Flood favorites too. Elijah's site was barely a month old when he took up “I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound.”It is a tune he loved as a young man, but, he writes, he couldn't “help noticing that Paxton himself got married back when he was writing these songs, and the marriage lasted, and he moved out to the country and raised a family, and all in all has had one of the most settled and stable lives of anyone on the folk scene.“It's as if he actually meant the last verse, where he sings that anyone who sees the ramblin' boy goin' by and wants to be like him should just ‘nail your shoes to the kitchen floor, lace 'em up and bar the door/Thank your stars for the roof that's over you.'”In retrospect, Wald said, “I think it's a nice touch that the singer keeps bemoaning his sad ‘n' ramblin' ways, but it's the girl, rather than him, who leaves on the morning train.”Our Take on the TuneSo this is an evergreen song, and that word has special meaning in The Flood band room. It is reserved for tunes that are timeless. This Tom Paxton classic might be 60 years old, but it feels it could have been written last week — or, well, a century ago. This is a public episode. KNOW GOOD MUSIC Interviews JADA STAR! Rob and Matt had a great beautiful conversation with JADA STAR  Jada wrote the new song THE ORCHARD and recorded it with Dolly Parton (who just happens to be her aunt). The song is on the newly released album DOLLY PARTON & FAMILY : SMOKEY MOUNTAIN DNA: Family, Faith and Fables. Dolly gave Jada her name when she was born and Jada started her career as a performer at Dollywood. She tells us about her appearance on the reality show "CLAIM TO FAME" and developing a great relationship with Chris Osmond (son of ... as Jada later found out... Donny F'n Osmond) ******** From her BIO on her website: Jada spent almost a decade performing with her family members at Dollywood where she sharpened her performance skills and found her own songwriting voice. “I write what I'm feeling,” she says. “All my songs are very personal to me. They're very true — either about me or a situation that I've watched a person I care about go through.” In early 2021, Jada moved to Nashville where she continued her musical journey, exploring a fusion of the traditional, high lonesome sounds of the East Tennessee Mountains with modern pop music and an emotional confidence and honesty that has drawn comparisons to Nanci Griffith and Carly Simon.  That merger of varied musical traditions and deeply personal songwriting takes the spotlight on her debut album (from 2023), Tell Me I'm Your Angel. *********** You can find JADA at jadastar.com or jadastarmusic.com, Facebook and Instagram (@jadastarmusic) You can stream or buy the new Dolly Parton Family album at : https://smokymountaindna.com/************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.   *********** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found almost anywhere you listen to podcasts including Podbean (host site), Spotify , Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and YOUTUBE! Super excited to announce new guest, Conrad Fisher, to The Story!Music industry Veteran Matt Lindsey (Mel Tillis, Hal Ketchum) was planning a quiet evening at home when he got a call from his friend, legendary music producer Jim Rooney (John Prine, Nanci Griffith).“He was very insistent that I come down to a show in town,” Lindsey recalls. “He told me he'd found someone he wanted me to hear. He told me he thought this guy had a big future ahead of him. Once again, Rooney was right.”That was the night Lindsey met Conrad Fisher, a young singer / songwriter from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Fisher had come to Nashville to sit in with Rooney and his Irregulars (a stew of acclaimed session guys like Dan Dugmore, Dave Pomeroy along with acclaimed artists like Tim O' Brien, Pat Alger, Shawn Camp and more).“I loved what he did,” says Lindsey. “His music is so natural. I wanted to work with him immediately.”Indeed, FIsher possesses an immediately likable vocal style, is a fine guitar player skills and brought great original songs to the table. Lindsey and his Ashbrook Recordings partner Jeff Gordon (Elizabeth Cook) wanted to get Fisher into the studio as soon as possible. The result is Fisher's new Trouble With A Hammer, a 7–song collection of 5 originals and 2 covers; Tom Petty's “Walls,” and Waylon Jennings' “You Asked Me To.” On his originals, Fisher draws from a deep well of influences like Buck Owens (on the title track), Don Williams (“Old Lonesome Feeling” and “Better Now”), and even The Monkees (“Baby I've Got You”).Fisher provided vocals, keyboard, guitars, harmonic, percussion and kazoo and recorded the project at the famed Nashville recording studio, The Sound Emporium. Other noted musicians joining in were Fred Eltringham (drums, percussion), Russ Pahl (steel guitar/electric guitar), Pete Wasner (piano, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer), Gideon Klein (bass, fiddle) and Beth Fisher (vocals). The Pennyslvania-born singer and songwriter grew up in a Mennonite household where his dad played Johnny Cash records and where the young Fisher learned to love the harmonies of the church he attended. In 2018 Fisher went to Nashville to seek out his songwriting heroes like Roger Cook (“I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing”), Dickey Lee (“She Thinks I Still Care”), Dallas Frazier (“Elvira”), and Bill Anderson (“Tip of my Fingers”), among others.Still based in Pennsylvania, Fisher is an accomplished carpenter and spends time in his workshop building things for his family and friends. You can find Conrad and his projects here:Website: http://conradfishermusic.comYoutube: http://www.youtube.com/conradfisherFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ConradFisherMusic/Insta: https://www.instagram.com/conradfishermusicFind The Story Podcast here: coryrosenproductions.com/podcastsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-story/donations

Today, we're diving into the rich tapestry of the extraordinary songwriter, Gretchen Peters. Growing up next to the legendary Greenwich Village folk scene, before moving to Colorado where she cut her teeth as a performer, and finally settling in Nashville at the height of the traditional country to pop country split in the 90's and early aughts. Peters' story is something that music journalists and authors could only dream of living. And during all this time, she has etched her name into the annals of American music history with her poignant lyrics and haunting melodies. In the early '90s, Peters released her debut album, 'The Secret of Life,' which quickly garnered attention for its lyrical depth and Peters' distinctive, emotive voice. Throughout her illustrious career, Peters has penned songs that resonate with a raw, emotional honesty and capture complexities of the human condition. Her songs have been cut by the likes of Martina McBride and Trisha Yearwood, and has been a longstanding advocate for musician's rights in an increasingly complicated industry that looks more and more like a battleground everyday. Having recently retired from touring, it's time to take stock of  Gretchen Peters' immeasurable impact on music. Her dedication to storytelling has earned her a place among the most revered songwriters of our time. So join us today as we speak with Gretchen Peters about her serendipitous career, women's music in country and Americana, and whether or not there really is a difference between being a songwriter and being a performer.

AUSTIN CONSIGLIEREOLD NO. 1 by Guy Clark (RCA, 1975)Guy Clark's farmhouse was ground zero for a whole generation of America's finest songwriters. Check out the scene in the “Outlaw Country” doc, Heartworn Highways, with the babyfaced Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and Guy harmonizing and trading songs and stories at the kitchen table. This was a summit meeting of Towne Van Zandt's Gospel spreaders keeping the flame of devotion burning- and Guy, Towne's best friend, was John the Baptist. Or, watch that David Letterman clip, 24 years later, with Guy, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Nanci Griffith, Steve, and Rodney standing up there like Mount Rushmore, singing “Desperadoes Waiting for a Train”, and you realize that the gospel seeds that had been spread in the 70's had flowered across the nation. Well, that signature song appears on this, Guy's debut album, and it's like encountering the Dead Sea Scrolls - the original rendition. Add to this the elegiac, definitive version of L.A. Freeway - the song Jerry Jeff made into a folk-rock hit - (with my high school buddy, Jon Simons on harp), and you begin to intuit that you're listening to history being made - and, oddly, it still sounds brand new.To quote the liner notes in Apple Music, a Guy Clark song…”isn't as loose as Walker, or as poetic as Townes Van Zandt, but his songs were the best built.” In 2006, this professional luthier put out the album “Workbench Songs” who's title characterizes his steady carpenter's hand. It was nominated for best Contemporary Folk/Americana Grammy. By this time the much covered consigliere of Austin was a universally acknowledged master and national treasure. In 2019 Steve Earle recorded an album of his mentor's songs and I made the pilgrimage to Amoeba Records to get my copy signed and my picture taken with the man who knew the man who wrote these songs.

Ojai's own Rain Perry, singer-songwriter known for her lyrical prowess and crystal-clear voice, has been working on a one-woman show, which opens Thursday, October 13 and runs through October 22nd (Thursday, Friday and Saturday both weekends) at Kim Maxwell Studio, 226 West Ojai Avenue, #102. All shows are at 8 p.m. The show is named after David Foster Wallace's viral commencement address, "This Is Water," which emphasizes the true purpose of education and empathy. Perry was wrestling with questions of race and identity during the pandemic and George Floyd protests and found it the perfect metaphor. The show includes eight songs from her 9-song album "A White Album" which was just released and available on Itunes and Spotify or through her website. It debuted on the Folk Music Chart at no. 11 and has received rave reviews, including Glide Magazine's "it distill(s) complicated issues fraught with politics and passion through a prism of compassion and understanding." Bill Bentley of Americana Highways magazine wrote, "There are times on "A White Album" where the whole thing feels like it is making the world tilt in a new direction. These are songs which are perfectly capable of giving life a whole new meaning. People like Rain Perry don't come around that often. They just don't." Perry said one message is for white people to acknowledge their privilege and to question each other, or, as she said, "Calling people in," rather than calling them out. She also used the folk expression, "Collect your cousins," for a reckoning on race and culture. This play is being directed by Kim Maxwell, who also directed Rain's much-acclaimed 2008 show, "Cinderblock Bookshelves," with accompaniment from Austin, Texas-based Mark Hallman. Perry said that a grant from the Ojai Arts Commission helped produce the play as well. It "was a sequel of sorts to 'Cinderblock Bookshelves'," she said. “I want to look back at my same childhood, but this time through the lens of race.” Hallman, owner of the iconic Congress House studio, has produced music by Carole King, Tom Russell (who recorded one of Rain's songs) and Eliza Gylkison and Ani Di Franco. He was the subject of a well-received 2016 documentary film, "The Shopkeeper," that Perry wrote and directed about the post-Napster travails of the music business, through Hallman's and other musicians' struggles to stay afloat in the streaming era. Perry talked about growing up in Ojai, her eccentric family, early mentors and raising her children, as well as sharing insights into the creative side of her life, the success of selling a song, "Beautiful Tree," that became the theme of a popular CW Network show, "Life Unexpected," and her song "Yosemite" has been recorded by Tom Russell and Nanci Griffith. We did not talk about Lake Casitas storage capacity, how grasshoppers turn into locusts or how Auguste Escoffier's military service informed his "brigade de cuisine" system. In today's episode, we welcome musician Maggie Clifford on the podcast! Listen in as she tells us about her new music and how it helps her reconnect with the life that surrounds us. She even plays a few song for us. It's an honor and a treat to have such a talented musician on the podcast. I hope you enjoy the episode as much as we did!  LINKS Spotify Instagram Audio Production: Supermoon Creative “Come The Rain”, the newest single from Gainesville, FL experimental folk artist Maggie Clifford, will drop June 14th on Spirit House Records. The new track deftly blends a Celtic melodic structure with a modern folk charm. “Come the Rain” is a love song to community and conveys the depth of commitment required to maintain strong relationships in our chosen families. Through depictions of nature and the seasonal passage of time, Clifford's song is a reminder that true community means being there for each other in the good times as well as the bad, come the drought and come the rain.  This is Clifford's debut release with Spirit House Records and marks her first time working with a label. With several songs in various stages of production, Clifford plans to release an EP within the year. “Come the Rain” was produced by Bob McPeek (Bo Diddley, Mo Tucker, Sister Hazel) and features George Tortorelli on bamboo flute and Rob Rothschild on percussion.  MORE ON MAGGIE CLIFFORD: Born and raised in a suburb of Rochester, NY, Clifford's first project as a professional musician was with childhood best friend Kat Wright. Their folk duo, Loveful Heights, toured cross-country in 2010 and followed up the tour by recording their self-titled album. In collaboration with Wright, Clifford has opened for M. Ward and been featured in the 2017 film, The King, which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Music Film category, an Emmy in the Best Documentary category, and for the Golden Eye Award at the Cannes Film Festival.  Clifford has performed in venues in France, India, Brazil and across the United States. As a solo artist, she has written music for multiple documentary film projects, including Petra Costa's feature-length directorial debut ELENA (2012). Clifford released an album inspired by her work on ELENA, a film that deals explicitly with mental health issues for women artists. ELENA was the most watched documentary in Brazil the year of its release and Clifford's song was referred to as “the soul of the film” by its director. The soundtrack, which includes several songs by and with Clifford, went on to be awarded Best Original Soundtrack by Ciné Musica.  Since the release of her ELENA-inspired album in 2013, Clifford has recorded several singles including her most widely streamed, “Earth My Body” a love song for the living world.  Clifford is currently a PhD candidate studying climate change communication at American University. Her academic work often informs the thematic elements of her songs. Her most recent release (November 2021), was recorded with Gainesville musician Ricky Kendall and pays homage to acclaimed songwriter and musician Nanci Griffith, who passed away in August, 2021. Trouble in the Fields, a song by Griffith, portrays the resilience of a multi-generational farming family as they struggle to make ends meet and sustain their way of life.

In 2021 I saw that John Gorka, was performing a virtual concert—so I bought tickets, set up a video projector, and watched him in my living room with my wife and my two boys.  It was a moment of light in a dark time.  So, when it came time to put together Restoring Memory: A COVIDCalls exploration of the first 2 COVID years, I took a chance and reached out—and well, he's here! From New Jersey, John Gorka is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania.  Jack Hardy's legendary Fast Folk circle (a breeding ground for many a major singer-songwriter) was a powerful source of education and encouragement early in his career, and he won the New Folk Award in 1984 at Texas' Kerrville Folk Festival. In addition to his 11 critically acclaimed albums, John released a collector's edition box featuring a hi-definition DVD and companion CD called The Gypsy Life. Windham Hill also released a collection of John's greatest hits from the label called Pure John Gorka. In 2010, he also released an album with his friends and Red House label-mates Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson under the name Red Horse. Getting high praise from critics and fans alike, it landed on the Billboard Folk Charts and was one of the most played albums on folk radio. Many well known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O'Connell. John has played all over the USA and Europe at hallowed venues like Austin City Limits and Mountain Stage.

This week, we recorded live at Godfrey Daniels with the Managing Director, Ramona Labarre. Ramona is a Texas native who came to Bethlehem in 1985. Looking for music on the left end of the dial, she found Hep Cat's Holiday - hosted by Dave Fry - on WMUH radio, where she heard that Nanci Griffith would be performing at a place called Godfrey Daniels. She remembers finding and walking into the club one evening to buy tickets. Nanci Griffith at Godfrey's: an intimate concert with only about 30 in attendance. Needless to say, she caught the magic that night. She answered the call to start volunteering. It didn't take long to figure out that she could be part of a group of like-minded folks who helped bring live music to the masses. She was soon enlisted to help behind the scenes. By 1990, she was invited to join the board. In the late 1990s, she joined the conference staff for the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance and International Folk Alliance for 10 years, an important nexus for folk artists, venues, radio, festivals, press and record companies, and others. In 2010, she was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission, due no doubt to her volunteer time with Godfrey's, and her years (2003-2009) with the Celtic Cultural Alliance (Celtic Classic festival). At CCA, she was public relations; bookkeeper; volunteer coordinator; festival finance director. The Lehigh Valley music scene is truly a large, generous and open hearted community - very much like a family. A mysterious visitor; small town livin'; Nanci Griffith. Music in this episode Invisible from Middlescence a late-night version of Nanci's The Flyer (nb This is a late-night cover of Nanci Griffith's The Flyer...I originally did a version for the Nanci tribute Trouble In The Fields that Pete and Maura Kennedy put together - here just trying to capture a little of the moment in one of my favorite songs. Maybe I was drawn to it cause she mentions Pittsburgh but I think she really captured that lonely but hopeful feeling of being a woman on the road as well as anyone ever has.

In this episode — the first we've recorded in our London office for over 18 pandemic months — we persuaded long-time RBP contributor Richard Williams (far left) to make his second appearance on "the show", principally so we could pick his brains on two of his favourite musical subjects. We start with a conversation about Laura Nyro, of whom both he and co-host Barney are besotted devotees (fellow co-hosts Mark & Martin can't get past the voice), then move on to the Beach Boys of 1970's Sunflower & 1971's Surf's Up. Richard is particularly fascinating on the role on the latter masterpiece of manager/co-writer Jack Rieley... and at least Martin likes the Beach Boys! The BBs discussion provides the perfect cue for three clips from the week's new audio interviews: John Tobler's conversations with Mike Love (1976) & Bruce Johnston (1980), both of which prompt further thoughts on the quintessential California band & the doomed "Brian Wilson Is Back!" campaigns of the mid-'70s. We then segue into the work of a quintessential California writer, Deanne Stillman, and her featured RBP pieces about Surf culture & Tom Wolfe's 1965 Phil Spector profile "The Tycoon of Teen".After paying our respects to Texan country-folk icon Nanci Griffith – with quotes from interviews conducted with her in 1988 & 2012 — Mark talks us through his favourite new additions to the RBP library, including interviews with John Lennon, Sid Vicious & Nancy Spungen & Madonna producer Pat Leonard, while Barney rounds things off with remarks on a 2007 interview with Raymond "Gilbert" O'Sullivan. Many thanks to special guest Richard Williams; find his blog at thebluemoment.com.The Rock's Backpages podcast is proud to be part of the Pantheon podcast network.Pieces discussed: Laura Nyro by Richard Williams, Laura Nyro by Ian MacDonald, Laura Nyro by Rob Steen, Mike Love audio, Bruce Johnston audio, Surf culture, Phil Spector, Nanci Griffith by Adam Sweeting, Nanci Griffith by David Burke, Paper Lace, Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, Bow Wow Wow, Pat Leonard, Sandy Bull, Hair, John Lennon, Buck Owens and Gilbert O'Sullivan.

Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateTom Rush's career is a wonder. After stepping away from record labels and major tours in the 70's, he's managed to cultivate a dedicated audience that has loyally shown up for decades. His relationship to music had a rocky start with a dozen years of unenjoyable piano lessons. Tom talks about his cousins, Beau Beals, who taught him ukulele and how to find joy and fun in music. Rush started college at Harvard as a marine biology major, but switched to English lit and kept his love of music and writing strong throughout school. In fact, he did struggle with focusing on studying due to his very frequent trips to The Club 47, which is right around the corner from the Harvard Square campus in Cambridge, MA. Tom actually was able to start playing around town and soon recorded an album, which was a novelty at the time. He became known as "the guy with the record."His sound started off very traditional, recording versions of Lowland Scots and Appalachian folk songs. After a few albums in, he started looking for new material to record and came across a few unknown songwriters for his 1968 album, The Circle Game. Tom Rush was the first person to record songs by unknowns Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Jackson Browne. After a few albums into the 70's, Rush was burnt out, his label dropped him and he needed a well deserved break. In the 80's, Tom reinvented his career and laid the foundation for what it could look like for an independent musician to thrive. He established The Club 47 Concerts at Boston Symphony Hall, an upscale event that allowed his fans to enjoy folk rock in style. He became a champion of up and coming musicians like Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin. That nimbleness has followed him throughout the years and has proven most useful during the pandemic. Tom quickly created Rockport Sundays, his weekly video series where fans can support him via Patreon. Tom Rush! Still doing the damn thing in 2021!! Find Your Shine: An Interview with Kevin Higgins

Today's guest grew up in El Paso, Texas where, in his own words, “the desert southwest and the mountains of southern New Mexico left an indelible impression on his soul.” The recipient of six Texas Music Awards, including "Song of the Year" for the title cut on his album “Find Your Shine” he was also a New Folk Finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 2000. It was 2013 when I first became fully immersed in the Texas Music scene while recording an early Mister Radio episode at the Picker Circle in Luckenbach, Texas, then I finally understood why many critics say that all the best singer songwriters come from Texas, in fact one reviewer for Americana magazine, when writing about my guest, stated that “some may argue against this fact but it's true; the dissenters are wrong. Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely, Nanci Griffith, Willie Nelson, the names go on, and now there's one more to add to the list...Kevin Higgins.” It is my honor to introduce today's guest, Kevin Higgins.
