A powerful storm hit South Carolina and quickly moved its way up the coast. On Sunday August 30, 1839, as the storm headed for the open waters south of Cape Cod a surge of unseasonably cold air blasted out of eastern Canada and into New York state. Across the Catskill mountains temperatures plunged to near freezing, yet moisture was still being hurled inland. The result was one of those rare occurrences across the uplands of eastern New York – a snow hurricane. Several inches of the white stuff mounted up – the wind was still howling and the heavy wet snow plastered itself to everything in what could be described as a hurricane white-out. On Sunday August 5th, 1990, President George H. W. Bush boarded Marine One and flew from Camp David to the White House South Lawn after an intense 72 hours of international consultations concerning Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait. Though it was still early in the crisis, the President had already decided Iraq’s aggression could not be rewarded, and after crossing the White House lawn that day famously declared to the White House Press Corps, “This will not stand. This will not stand, this aggression against Kuwait.” In this episode, host Sam LeBlond recounts that historic day with Dr. Richard Haass, who served as Special Assistant to President George H. W. Bush and Senior Director for Near East and South Asian Affairs on the National Security Council. Listen as Dr. Haass reflects on the planning that became Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the legacy of the Bush Administration, plus a rare recording of the President aboard the Marine One helicopter on August 5, 1990. On Sunday August 25th Pastor Marv shared the final message in this series, about witnessing.
On Sunday August 25th, Los Angeles Football Club (19-5-3) drew with crosstown rival Los Angeles Galaxy(13-3-11) 3-3 in Banc of California Stadium, marking just the second time in 2019 that LAFC has dropped points at home. While the team is still undefeated in the Banc, LAFC had to fight back from a 3-1 first half deficit after a poor opening 20 minutes gifted the Galaxy an early lead. A brace from midfielder Latif Blessing, captain Carlos Vela's 27th goal of the 2019 campaign and a blistering debut from Brian Roeriguez, LAFC's newest designated player, were the highlights of LAFC's 3-3 draw with the Galaxy, but the first win against Zlatan & Co. still eludes the black and gold. Ryan Wallerson of the Southern California News Group (Daily News) & Alex Dwyer of MLSsoccer.com break down LAFC's performance against the Galaxy, how the first five matches of El Traffico (if you still call it that; Bob doesn't) will impact the team moving forward, and preview Sunday's home match against Minnesota United in the Banc.
On Sunday August 11th, Los Angeles Football Club (17-4-3) defeated the New York Red Bulls (11-4-10) in what will likely be remembered as a battle between the 2018 and 2019 Major League Soccer Supporters Shield winners. The Red Bulls played their normal pressing style against LAFC's counter press and entered the half tied with LAFC at two goals a piece, but LAFC controlled the second half en route to another home victory. With ten wins and a draw in 11 matches at Banc of California Stadium, LAFC have truly taken the mantra "Defend the banc" to heart in 2019. Ryan Wallerson of the Southern California News Group (Daily News) & Alex Dwyer of MLSsoccer.com break down LAFC's performance against the Red Bulls and discuss the challenges that await LAFC during the final ten matches of the season, beginning Saturday, August 17th, in Rio Tinto Stadium against Real Salt Lake.

Anquan Boldin is a former NFL wide receiver, who played 14 seasons. On Sunday August 20, 2017, Boldin announced his retirement from Pro Football, just 13 days after signing a 1-year deal with the Buffalo Bills. “Football has afforded me a platform throughout my career to have a greater impact on my humanitarian work, and at this time, I feel drawn to make the larger fight for human rights a priority,” Boldin said in a statement to ESPN's Jim Trotter. “My life’s purpose is bigger than football.” The 3-time Pro Bowler had a wonderful career, finishing with 1,076 receptions, 13,779 yards and 82 touchdowns. He played in two Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XLVII as a member of the Baltimore Ravens in 2012. His foundation, "Q81" was formed in 2004 to help expand educational and life opportunities for underprivileged children. On this episode of the podcast, in a very real, and raw conversation, we talk to Anquan about his decision to retire, what role faith played in making that decision, his reaction to the recent events in Charlottesville, Virginia and what happens next now that he is no longer playing in the NFL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can partner with us for $36 a year (just $3 a month) and become a member of the Sports Spectrum family.
