Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Welcome to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. This week on the show, direct from his desert studio on the US/Mexico border south of Tucson: synth music pioneer Steve Roach.  As a kid in Costa Mesa, he became entranced with motorsports, prog rock, and kosmische musik by Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, and other Berlin school fusionists. In 1984, he released his landmark third album, Structures from Silence. Record stores filed it in the new age section, where it sold like hotcakes. But as far as Roach was concerned, it was simply his take on the electronic music that fascinated him, with a humanistic touch: it's pace mimicked the pulse of human breath. Roach has maintained a steady flow of music ever since. This year, Roach and his longtime label Projekt released a 40th anniversary version of Structures. It was quickly followed by Reflections in Repose, a live set performed,  composed and recorded in Baja Arizona in late 2023. Add to that production on Serena Gabriel's The Saffron Sky and a three-night stint at Hotel Congress in Tucson, May 29th, 30th, and 31st, where he'll be joined by fellow synth lifers Robert Rich and Michael Stearns, and you can see why it's a miracle he time to join us for this episode, dedicated to discussing his creative process, learning to go with your own flow, and his lifelong sonic journey.  Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. This hotel has stuck to its historic roots by keeping improvements without losing decor, limiting technology, and embracing its ghosts. Whether it's the spirits of those who worked there or long-gone guests, this place is hopping with paranormal activity! And though the seances may be staged, the personal stories from employees and tourists certainly are not. And Brittany talks about Haley Zega. This woman was lost on a hiking trip when she was 6 years old. Gone for more than two days, you might wonder how such a young child could survive on her own. She remembers help in the form of her imaginary friend, but was it just an imaginary friend or something more? Hope you're enjoying the new season of Aquarium Drunkard's Transmissions. Here's a good one from the archives, a favorite of Timothy Showalter of Strand of Oaks a roundtable talk with three lifers: Howe Gelb, Robyn Hitchcock, and Steve Wynn. The three share similar paths through scenes and the industry, their paths are shared but divergent, and there’s a spiritual unity at work even in their differences. With his band Giant Sand, Howe Gelb pens strange, dusty songs about love and the desert. Both solo and with his Paisley Underground pioneering band the Dream Syndicate, Wynn composes driving minimalist rock sagas (a recent 11-disc boxset documents much of his range) . And after emerging from the UK punk scene with the Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock has embarked on a career full of wry and funny songs that skewer pop conventions. We spoke in August of 2018 when they performed at HOCO Fest in Tucson, Arizona, a place where they all share considerable history. This interview was recorded at the KXCI studio at the historic Hotel Congress. Please enjoy this one from the vault.

Featuring an online Holla–Day shopping guide with Black businesses offering seasonal menus, products, services. On Blax Friday, November 27th there will be limited capacity pop-up events and promotions with community partners such as Why I Love Where I Live, Hotel Congress, & Gallery, Hotel McCoy, CIMA Enterprises, and more. Blax Friday is a community organization created in the summer of 2020, that spotlights Black businesses in Arizona. Their goals are representation and economic empowerment of Black business owners. They spotlight businesses through our website, iOS app, social marketing, promotions, weekly newsletters, and community events. They are Black business owners who joined forces to build a bridge between their Black Owned Businesses and the communities they serve in Arizona. They are focused on positive actionable steps towards inclusivity and equity. “This project was created to take away emphasis from using “Black” as a discount code via Black Friday. In turn, we created Blax Friday where people shop at Black Owned Businesses” — Khailill P. “Having grown up in Tucson, and seeing little acknowledgment of the Black community, it’s very encouraging to see so many people jumping on board to support and empower Black businesses. I’m personally receiving a lot of DMs from people who are eager and excited to buy Black! The fact that (Blax Friday) got organized so quickly is amazing.” — Fiona C. With the desire for more representation and inclusive spaces, Blax Friday has created a promotional campaign for Black Businesses during the 2020 holiday season. This will allow opportunities to build awareness and bridges within our community while offering an accessible guide and limited capacity pop-up events that amplify Black businesses in lieu of the stressful undertakings at big box stores on Black Friday. The pop-up events on Blax Friday, November 27th will invite the community to actively locate Black Businesses via the Holla–Day Shopping guide while exploring community partner spaces for #blaxfriday promotions. “Black Businesses are organizing, celebrating, and building resiliency plans to survive the effects of COVID-19, racial injustice, and economic disparities of financial support. The data and news show the world that we all need to do more in order to preserve the growth of local small businesses. As a community, we can change the ways of the past to propel ourselves into a positive future”. — Ashley La Russa Roux Events is an event management company founded in Tucson, Arizona with a primary focus on supporting the growth of organizations and community leaders that foster equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives. 100 years ago The Rialto Theater opened across the street from the recently built Hotel Congress. It was our downtown entertainment district- hotel, restaurant, bar and theater. The Rialto is a downtown iconic fixture. As you roll in from the East, you cannot miss its marquee. Last night The Rialto Theater Foundation celebrated the 100th anniversary as part of their annual fund raising gala. As expected, it was a popular place to be on leap day. In honor of this milestone we pulled out of our archives a 2018 feature we did on the theater with Julie Ragland, the Development Director of the Rialto Theater Foundation The theater survived an arson attempt, has staged Vaudeville, showed adult films, was used to store furniture and is haunted. But when you talk to Julie Ragland she simply says it has a Funky Vibe. Formed as part of Rio Nuevo's efforts to preserve the history of downtown Tucson, the Rialto Theater Foundation has restored the theater to being one of the top live performance spots in the world. The foundation has also added R Bar and 191 Toole to its inventory. Julie gave us the history of the Rialto Foundation and discussed its mission with us.

Agave Heritage Festival began in 2008 as Agave Fest, a Cinco de Mayo celebration featuring tequila tastings and a tequila “Iron Bar Chef” competition at the historic Hotel Congress. As the festival grew in the following years, the number of different agave spirits featured at the event more than doubled, and food specials were elevated from cheap eats to regionally focused culinary treats. By 2015 — the same year that Tucson was the first U.S. city to receive the UNESCO City of Gastronomy designation — Agave Fest had gone from a tequila-lover’s Cinco de Mayo celebration to an event rooted in the historical and cultural significance of the agave plant. With seminars, a fundraising Agave Dinner, tastings of spirits unavailable in the United States, and a cultural and historical art exhibit, Agave Fest had begun to realize its true potential. The agave plant’s inextricable role in the culture and history of the Arizona-Mexico borderlands region became a central focus of Agave Fest, leading to the creation of Agave Heritage Week in 2016 and the expansion into Agave Heritage Festival in 2017. We’re back. The weather is beginning to turn. We’re almost there. Welcome to the September edition of the Transmissions podcast. On this episode, we sit down with three legends of independent music: psychedelic singer/songwriter Robyn Hitchcock, Giant Sand leader Howe Gelb, and Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate. Since emerging in the ‘80s, they’ve amassed incredible catalogs, and they’re all still making vital and poetic records. We spoke earlier this month at HOCO Fest, a multi-day festival in Tucson, Arizona. Sitting down at the KXCI studio at Hotel Congress, the three riffed on their years making music, how their sounds have evolved over the years, and what a lifelong commitment to making art looks like. But first, our conversation with Matt Sullivan of Light in the Attic Records, one of our longtime favorite reissue labels. We spoke live at Gold Diggers in East Hollywood as part of our Talk Show series – a set of live conversations centered around the worlds of music, art, film and beyond. LITA has released records by Rodriguez, Betty Davis, Lee Hazlewood, Jim Sullivan, Serge Gainsbourg, and has launched expansive archives like the Native North America and Japan Archival projects. How did Light in the Attic get started? Live on stage at Gold Diggers, Sullivan explained it all.

On Sunday August 13th, local community activists organized “Tucson March Against White Supremacy And Racism" as a rapid response to events in Charlottesville, Virginia. Tucsonans met at Hotel Congress and marched to the Islamic Center of Tucson, the African American Student Affairs Center, and the Hillel Foundation. Tucsonans then marched back to Hotel Congress patio stage for a rally, which is where I caught up with them.
