The Borderlands Are Beautiful: A Podcast with Petey Mesquitey

The Border Chronicle

The legendary storyteller takes us on a trip through the Arizona borderlands, its sky islands, flora and fauna, all the way to the border wall with Mexico. “The borderlands are beautiful.” That's how Petey Mesquitey always ends his weekly show Growing Native on the Tucson community radio station KXCI. And that was my first question to Petey in this interview: Why are the borderlands beautiful? What follows is the legendary storyteller's observations from more than 30 years of living in the rural borderlands, what it's like to walk every morning through diverse biomes, what it's like to see a bear, a coatimundi, or a box turtle; what it's like to experience a forest of saguaros or a forest of oak trees. In other words, a description of the borderlands that is much different from what we usually get, with sparse adjectives like dusty and desolate. Petey is an expert storyteller who lets the words tumble out of his mouth in all directions—a chaotic, coherent, sweet, and joyful poetry—and this interview is no different. It was a joy, as it has been for decades, to hear his descriptions and see with fresh eyes what a unique and beautiful place the borderlands is. He also talks about all the changes that he's seen in his time here. “When I moved here,” he says, “I had a friend who had a ranch on the other side of the San Bernardino in Mexico. We just jumped back and forth through the barbed-wire fence—to go in and out, in and out—to look at plants. Wait, there's a plant on the other side of the border, but it's in Mexico. It would just crack you up. It's so sweet. I'm in Mexico. I'm going back and forth. And, you know, there's always the history—of course, workers came through. People expected them to come through. I don't know how it all went to hell. And became such dreadful, angry, hateful thing.” On a side note, I am moving (within Tucson) and somehow lost my recorder. I apologize if the sound is off at all. I think it still sounds pretty good, especially because of the magic of our audio editor. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/border-chronicle/support

I've told the story of the yucca moths and the soaptree yuccas many times. I love to tell it when I give talks and I'm not making this up, many years ago on a special International Women's Day on KXCI, my wife, yes, Ms. Mesquitey, told the yucca moth story on Growing Native. We both think it is one of the most beautiful and magical things that happen around us in the natural world. Yes, it's part of an extremely long and always lengthening list of wonderful things, but what a great example of how we can't possibly ever replace our native plants or pollinators…and why would we try. Go native! The photos are mine and taken here at home of some Yucca elata flowers with a surprise; I was pulling back the flower petals to reveal the flower parts and lo and behold, there was Ms. Tageticula elatella! She's on a stamen in both photos and was probably just hanging out and waiting for evening. If my hearing were better I probably could have heard her asking me to please lower the petals so she could get some sleep, as she had a long night ahead.

The miller moths that showed up at our little homestead are the adult of the army cutworm (Euxoa auxiliaris) and they migrate from lower areas and head to upper elevations. I've read that they are common invaders of mountain cabins and summer homes, but the most interesting thing to me about miller moths is how they become part of the food chain in the upper elevations. In grizzly country the bears  (black bears too) chow down on the hundreds of thousands of moths that migrate and hide in the hills. Around us, I'm guessing black bears and smaller omnivores like skunks, ringtails or coatimundi find them tasty as well. Now you know. Henry Barajas is a Latinx author from Tucson. He spoke about his pathway as a storyteller. He is best known for his graphic memoir about his great-grandfather titled La Voz De M.A.Y.O. Tata Rambo. It is based on the oral history of Ramon Jaurigue, an orphan and WWII veteran who co-founded the Mexican, American, Yaqui, and Others (M.A.Y.O.) organization, which successfully lobbied the Tucson City Council to improve living and working conditions for members of the Pascua Yaqui tribe—paving the way to their federal recognition. Meanwhile, Ramon’s home life suffered as his focus was pulled from his family to the wider community, and from domesticity to the adrenaline of the campaign. Henry Barajas has been writing, lettering, editing, and publishing comics for ten years. Recently, he scripted and lettered a short story for Image Comics’ Where We Live Benefit Anthology—100% of the proceeds were donated to Route 91 Strong, a non-profit organization. He was a deejay for KXCI, the online editor of the Tucson Weekly, former Arizona Daily Star writer/news assistant, and was nominated for the Shel Dorf Blogger of the Year award for his work at The Beat. Currently, he’s the Operations Director for Top Cow Productions in Los Angeles, CA. He is about to launch the first part of a 4 part Latinx fantasy series called Helm Greycastle on April 28th. Barajas took combined his passion for fantasy novels and books and created an alternate universe where the Aztec Empire defeated the Spanish Conquistadors. Recorded and produced by Amanda Shauger.

Here's a good one from the archives, a favorite of Timothy Showalter of Strand of Oaks a roundtable talk with three lifers: Howe Gelb, Robyn Hitchcock, and Steve Wynn. The three share similar paths through scenes and the industry, their paths are shared but divergent, and there’s a spiritual unity at work even in their differences. With his band Giant Sand, Howe Gelb pens strange, dusty songs about love and the desert. Both solo and with his Paisley Underground pioneering band the Dream Syndicate, Wynn composes driving minimalist rock sagas (a recent 11-disc boxset documents much of his range) . And after emerging from the UK punk scene with the Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock has embarked on a career full of wry and funny songs that skewer pop conventions. We spoke in August of 2018 when they performed at HOCO Fest in Tucson, Arizona, a place where they all share considerable history. During any election season, we always can count on a bombardment of political ads that tell us all the wonderful things every candidate has done and everything that’s wrong with their opponent. In addition, all too often, political consultants advise their candidates not to accept invitations to participate in public forums with their opponents to lessen the chance they’ll say something off-script. That results in very limited opportunities to hear directly from candidates and limits voter access to information about candidates and their positions on issues to scripted ads and sound bites. To aid voters in making informed decisions at the polls, candidates for each respective position are being asked the same questions. Redistricting is something we do every 10 years, based on the Census. In many states, the state legislature determines the district lines for both the United States Congress and the state legislature. This has resulted in legislators drawing lines that benefit themselves and making the districts less competitive. In Arizona, the Independent Redistricting Commission is empowered to make more neutral decisions. Created by citizen initiative, the Independent Redistricting Commission operated in 2001 and 2011. Its third round will begin in 2021. Kathy Aros, President of the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson, discusses the importance of the Census in redistricting and the rate of completing the Census in Tucson, Arizona, and the country. Betty Bengtson, Chair of the Advocacy Committee, details how Commissioners are chosen and the process the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission goes through in drawing the lines. We hope you have enjoyed the programs and become educated about the candidates and the voting process. Be sure to vote on November 3 or before! The Pima County Treasurer‘s Office receives, manages, and disburses public funds, as well as collects, manages, and distributes property taxes levied by various units of local government. The Mission Statement of the Treasurer’s Office is: “To provide the most efficient and professional banking and tax collection services possible for Pima County, its political subdivisions and the taxpayers.” Our interviews today features Pima County Treasurer candidates Democrat Brian Bickel and Republican Beth Ford. KXCI Community Radio is pleased to partner with The League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson to provide a series of shows called Your Arizona Voting Guide leading up to the general election on November 3rd. This weekly half-hour series will air at 3:30 p.m. on Sundays beginning August 16th. During the lead up to the November 3rd General Election, the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson is interviewing candidates for the Arizona Corporation Commission, which is a State of Arizona office. In addition, the League will interview candidates running for Pima County offices: Sheriff, Recorder, and Treasurer. League member, Vivian Harte, serves as host of the program. To aid voters in making informed decisions at the polls, candidates for each respective position are being asked the same questions. KXCI 91.3 FM Community Radio is partnering with the League to air these interviews with the community. In addition, members of the League will be interviewed about various topics, including what to know about registering to vote in Pima County, ballot propositions, getting out the vote during the COVID-19 pandemic, speeches offered by the League, and League activities promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Runt tells all the stories and good times had by all as they're recording out of Thunder Canyon brewery. ◦ The Hood Diner Is one of our favorite places to hear hip-hop interviews, news and more the homey Kazual was in California this time and being featured on the no offense show which is part of the inner circle podcast network listen to all their episodes at thehooddiner.com ◦ POD by Mac-Sama, Tim and Mac drink whiskey talk sports and call Aske in Denver ◦ V3 podcast is a YouTube podcast featuring 3 rappers with “V” in their names. Where they talked about food and hip-hop and the scene and had a lot of fun doing it. And Wounded World podcast, John interviewed rappers before he left for the Navy but you can still find his most recent episode with Lasso, a truly epic one on SoundCloud ◦ I'd also like to mention brother Marcus of Stand-Up Radio who continues to do his thing every week and Arkana ENT has recently dropped AZUR that's Arizona Underrated radio and they both play tracks from the community find them on Facebook and submit your songs ◦ If you've got your radio edit together submit your songs to Speakerbox X hip hop on 99.1 downtown radio every Sunday at 1 PM your host VRiv plays the hottest underground hip-hop and talks to the best in the community. don't forget to check out the Speakerbox X podcast that drops reviews about local music and new national releases with her cohost Jimmy Coltrane. ◦ And every Wednesday at midnight EL Aaron brings you Blazing Midnight Hits on 91.3 KXCI community radio and he also gets down with the Tucson hip-hop spinning the best tracks and interviewing the old Pueblo's finest. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mankindpodcast/message
