In his 15th season in the NFL Fran Tarkenton was having another great year. Maybe his best. The Vikings would start the season 10-0 and finish 12-2 atop the NFL Central in large part to the numbers put up by Tarkenton. He completed 273 of his 425 attempts, 25 of them for touchdowns to lead the league in those 3 categories. And when the season concluded, he would take home the Most Valuable Player Award for the 1975 season. After three more very successful seasons in Minnesota, Tarkenton retired after his 18th year in the NFL. He finished his career with numerous NFL records at the time including completions (3,686), attempts (6,467) yards (47,003). and (342) touchdowns. Known as the 'Mad Scrambler', Tarkenton was the game's first true dual threat, retiring as the NFL's all-time leader in rushing yards by a quarterback and he did it all by winning games… the most ever by a QB at the time of him hanging it up. He was named a Pro-Bowler 9 times, and had his #10 retired by the Vikings while being named one of the 50 greatest Vikings and Giants players of all-time. And in 1986, he earned a gold jacket and was enshrined into Canton as a member of the NFL's Hall of Fame. Unfortunately his success didn't translate to the postseason. Three times he took his Vikings teams to the Super Bowl and three times they came up short. But Fran tells us on the Past Our Prime podcast there is a reason the Vikings lost 4 of the first 11 Super Bowls. He also tells us about his love and admiration for the coach of those Minnesota teams, Bud Grant, and how if he could prepare for those Super Bowl games from back then differently now the results may have been different. Tarkenton also tells us how the loss to the Cowboys in the playoffs in 1975 was a “monumental day” in his life… one that changed him forever. Minutes after Roger Staubach connected with Drew Pearson on possibly the first ‘Hail Mary' ever, his life was forever altered. A tragic tale only made worse by how it all unfolded. Once retired, Fran embarked on his 2nd act and 50 years later, he's still as competitive and active as ever and more often than not… still coming out on top. As the CEO of https://tarkentonfinancial.com/ Fran continues to produce at a high level. His financial company has seen him rise to the top of the business world and he tells us how he stays up to date on the newest business trends like pipIQ which reduces risks associated with misusing AI in small and mid-size businesses at a fraction of the cost. If you're interested in learning more about this breakthrough technology go to https://pipiq.com/?via=proTV Fran tells us that the similarities between being a QB in a huddle or a CEO in a board room are numerous. That he learned more by his failures than by his successes and that the great leaders all have one thing in common. What is it? Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks are joined by seven-time Pro Bowler and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Luke Kuechly to talk about his transition from playing in the NFL to coaching youth football. Luke shares his thoughts on the Panthers’ strong season and how head coach Dave Canales has helped the team embrace its identity. He explains why a lack of attention to detail and urgency frustrates him more than anything else on the field. Luke also reflects on his mastery of the Panthers’ defense during his career, while admitting he couldn’t have called plays at the same time. Plus, Luke shares what makes his former coordinator Sean McDermott so effective in shaping the Bills’ defensive style. Move the Sticks is part of the NFL Podcasts Network. UKRavens Podcast - A Baltimore Ravens Podcast from the United Kingdom
In this week's episode, Ian, James, Gordon and Ben relive a primetime palate-cleanser in South Florida as the Ravens thumped the Dolphins 28–6 on Thursday Night Football. Fresh off a hamstring layoff, Lamar Jackson put on a clinic with four touchdown passes and a 143.2 passer rating, while the offense mixed timely shots with controlled tempo to keep Miami on ice. From there, the lads dig into the offensive line and run-game picture. Progress in Miami, but still a season-long story of lurches and growing pains after so much turnover up front. They talk pressure rates, continuity, and how Derrick Henry's usage is evolving as the blocking gels, with context from preseason unit grades and midseason analysis. On defense, it was a “bend-don't-break” masterclass: Baltimore conceded yards but slammed doors in the red zone, stacked takeaways, and looked notably faster with multiple rookies flashing. The crew highlight those rookie contributions and celebrate the chess-piece value of Kyle Hamilton, whose all-over-the-field role lets Zach Orr keep disguises on every down. Trade talk heats up too. The team react to Baltimore acquiring Dre'Mont Jones to juice the pass rush. A low-cost flyer with upside, and what it signals about the front office's belief in this defense over the next two months. They also unpack the headline-grabbing Jaire Alexander deal sending the former Pro Bowler to Philadelphia, why it happened, and what it means for the Ravens' corner rotation and cap flexibility. Finally, it's a Week 10 preview at Minnesota: U.S. Bank Stadium noise, a rejuvenated Vikings team, early odds that make Baltimore road favourites, and the key matchups they think will travel . From protection rules versus simulated pressures to Lamar's perimeter options against a young secondary.
Episode No. 8 of the Irish Illustrated Interviews podcast series features linebacker Jaylon Smith, a high school and collegiate Butkus Award winner, a two-time All-American at Notre Dame, and a 10-year NFL veteran. He played for the Fighting Irish from 2013 to 2015, leading Notre Dame in tackles and havoc plays in his final season as a junior, a campaign that ended with a trip to the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State. Unfortunately, in the loss to the Buckeyes, Smith also suffered a devastating injury, tearing his ACL and LCL and enduring significant nerve damage. As a result, he fell from a projected top-five pick to an early second-round selection, with several teams unsure if he'd be able to play football again. Nevertheless, Smith preserved. After sitting out his rookie year with the Dallas Cowboys, he returned to the gridiron a season later and eventually became a Pro Bowler in the midst of a decade-long NFL career. Our conversation spans his entire playing career. Plus, we dive into how he overcame his injury and how he's currently investing in the South Bend community by opening JINYA Ramen Bar on Eddy Street, directly across from campus. Off The Bench is back weekdays from 10a to 11a followed by The Stone Shields Show from 11a to noon! The Cincinnati Bengals' potential trade of star defensive end Trey Hendrickson has gained traction following recent comments from NFL insiders and former players. Hendrickson, a three-time Pro Bowler who led the team with 17.5 sacks in 2024, has been at the center of speculation amid contract disputes and the Bengals' underwhelming 2025 season. Dianna Russini of The Athletic first reported in March 2025 that the Bengals had granted Hendrickson permission to seek a trade, citing his desire for long-term security beyond his current deal, which runs through 2025 with a $15 million base salary. She noted significant interest from teams like the Washington Commanders, with Cincinnati demanding "significant trade compensation" in return. By August, Russini updated that the Bengals were actively engaged in discussions for weeks, not just seeking draft picks but also targeting defensive players to bolster their roster. One source told her that an earlier spring trade might have yielded a higher draft pick, complicated by salary cap issues for suitors. This comes as the Bengals prioritize extensions for Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, potentially squeezing Hendrickson's negotiations. Adding fuel, former Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason, on the October 13, 2025, episode of the "Up & Adams" show, urged the team to trade Hendrickson if he's healthy, emphasizing the need for draft capital to rebuild. "If he's healthy, I would trade him. If you could get some quality draft picks back, 'cause that's how they're gonna have to rebuild their team," Esiason said. His comments align with Cincinnati's struggles, including Joe Burrow's turf toe injury in September, which has derailed their playoff hopes and shifted focus to future assets. A Hendrickson trade could net a first-round pick or equivalent, given his elite pass-rushing skills (12.5 sacks through Week 6 in 2025). Potential suitors include contenders like the San Francisco 49ers (post-Nick Bosa injury) or Carolina Panthers. However, Bengals GM Duke Tobin has historically resisted midseason deals, preferring to retain core talent. With the November 4 trade deadline looming, Hendrickson's situation remains fluid, balancing his production against team finances and rebuild needs. If moved, it signals a pivot toward youth, but keeping him could stabilize a defense ranked 22nd in pressures. Either way, these insider takes highlight Cincinnati's crossroads. Chris Perkins, from The Sun-Sentinel, didn't hold back on The Joe Rose Show, saying Tua Tagovailoa “looks shook,” pointing to shaky pocket presence, underthrown deep balls to Tyreek Hill, and a complete lack of the anticipation and accuracy that once made him a Pro Bowler. Add in a front seven that's flat-out failing, and Perkins wonders if Miami has already lost its edge. Perkins breaks down all things Dolphins ahead of their Monday Night Football clash with the New York Jets.

On April 19, 2017, Aaron Hernandez — the former NFL star tight end for the New England Patriots whose meteoric rise was eclipsed by a shocking murder conviction and subsequent prison sentence — was found dead in his prison cell at the age of 27. Once a standout athlete at the University of Florida and a Super Bowl–appearing Pro Bowler, Hernandez's career and life unraveled after his arrest and conviction for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd. His fall from grace, punctuated by a highly publicized trial and posthumous revelations of brain trauma and personal struggles, made Hernandez one of the most infamous cautionary tales in modern sports history. Jim Elliot once wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”“Generous” might not be the first word that comes to mind when you think about pro athletes, but Kirk Cousins is rewriting that playbook. The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback in the NFL is using his platform—and resources—for eternal impact. Today, we'll hear how his faith shapes everything from football to finances.Kirk Cousins is the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons and a veteran leader in the National Football League (NFL). He previously spent six seasons with the Washington Commanders and six with the Minnesota Vikings. A four-time Pro Bowler and outspoken man of faith, he is also the cofounder of the Julie & Kirk Cousins Foundation, which supports families and youth through faith-based initiatives.A Legacy of Generosity: Lessons from His ParentsGrowing up as a pastor's kid, Cousins remembers how his parents modeled generosity long before he had a bank account of his own.“My mom had the gift of hospitality,” he says. “Even when I didn't think I needed money, she'd hand me two twenties before I went out with friends. There was just this open-handedness.”While his dad managed the family finances with intentionality, it was his mother's willingness to give freely that left the deepest mark. “It was caught, not just taught,” Cousins reflects, emphasizing how their example shaped his understanding of stewardship early on.From Minimum Wage to Signing Bonuses: A Crash Course in StewardshipWhen Cousins was drafted into the NFL, his first check—a six-figure signing bonus—was a wake-up call.“As a college kid who had never earned more than minimum wage, I didn't know what to do,” he recalls. “I called my dad, and he said, ‘I don't know either!'”That moment marked the beginning of a stewardship journey—one that included learning to give, save, and live below his means in a world of excess. It wasn't easy, especially when surrounded by peers embracing a more lavish lifestyle. But Cousins understood that as an athlete, his income had a shorter runway.“You're approaching a cliff,” he says. “So it's scary to give when your career has an end date. But that's where faith comes in—trusting that God will provide beyond your own earning power.”It would be easy, Cousins admits, to treat financial obedience like a checklist—give, save, repeat. But biblical stewardship isn't about rules; it's about surrender.“I've done that—just checked the boxes. But that's not the abundant life Jesus promises. It's not religion, it's relationship.”He points to Jesus' parable of the treasure in the field (Matt. 13:44): “Once you see Jesus as the treasure, everything else becomes a logical response. Of course you'd sell everything to have Him. Stewardship flows from seeing Him clearly.”When Faith Feels Risky: Giving on a Diminishing TimelineThe tension for Cousins lies in balancing the enjoyment of God's provision with wisdom about the future.“I actually enjoy those moments that require more faith. When I give, and I don't know what's next, it puts the pressure back on God—where it belongs.”But he's quick to acknowledge the gray areas. “What's wise versus what's excessive? There's no formula. You have to walk with God and ask for His guidance daily.”One of the most valuable pieces of advice Kirk received early in his career came from a generous mentor: “Always give in unity with your wife.”That advice stuck.“When Julie isn't comfortable, I pause and pray. Her perspective might be the Holy Spirit speaking. Giving together strengthens our marriage and our stewardship.”Cousins sees their giving not only as a financial decision, but as a spiritual discipline of unity and trust.Planning for the Future: Wisdom Before WealthAs parents to young boys, Kirk and Julie have also had to consider how best to plan their estate. They've established a family office to prepare for the future—but with a strong desire to pass on wisdom before wealth.“We want to get to the end of our lives and say: the wisest hands to put this in are our kids'. But we also want to be realistic. If it wouldn't be wise to pass along wealth, we want our plan to reflect that.”Much of their estate will also go to their foundation, which they hope will be spent down soon after their passing. “We don't want it to live on in perpetuity with intentions we never had. We want to make an impact now.”So, where is Kirk Cousins most excited to give right now? The answer goes back to his roots.“I went to a Christian high school—Holland Christian—and it profoundly impacted my life. I want to make it more affordable for other families, support teachers, and strengthen Christian education.”It's a full-circle moment: a public school kid transformed by Christian community, now investing in the same kind of life-shaping environments for others.Final Whistle: A Life Well StewardedKirk Cousins is more than an NFL quarterback. He's a husband, father, and faithful steward who is using his influence to glorify God—not just in the end zone, but in the quiet decisions of budgeting, giving, and planning for the future. His story reminds us: Stewardship is not about how much we have—it's about how faithfully we respond to the One who gave it all.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I own my home outright and keep hearing about home title protection services. How real is the risk of title fraud, and should I be concerned?I have rental properties in Arkansas, but my kids in California don't want them. I'm worried that when I pass, they'll sell them quickly for way less than they're worth. Should I go ahead and sell them now and put the money in a trust for my grandkids' education—or is there a better option?”Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)The Julie & Kirk Cousins FoundationWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Have you ever asked yourself: How do I balance teaching my kids to be tough with also being emotionally available for them? Am I open with my children about my own fears or vulnerabilities, or do I try to hide them? Have I ever allowed my pride to get in the way of seeking help for my kids? Today, Larry Hagner sits down with Super Bowl champion Ricky Watters to explore a legacy that transcends the football field. Ricky—a five-time Pro Bowler and one of the NFL's most dynamic running backs of the 90s—opens up about his journey from being adopted as a baby in Harrisburg's inner city to building his own family's legacy as a father, mentor, and now, author. Ricky shares how his parents, especially his father—a tough yet deeply loving Korean War veteran—shaped him with wisdom, resilience, and unwavering belief. Even though his father's injuries kept him from running drills, he made sure Ricky was always supported, teaching him critical lessons in confidence, leadership, and reading people. Larry and Ricky dive deep into stories about overcoming adversity, finishing what you start, and stepping out of comfort zones. Beyond football, Ricky reveals the heartwarming story of adopting his youngest son, Shane, from Korea, and the deep impact that decision had on their entire family. Whether you're leading a team, raising kids, or simply striving to become a better man, this conversation is filled with wisdom and practical tools to help you live with intention and purpose. Get ready for a powerful, unforgettable episode that will inspire you to lead with love, leave a legacy, and—most importantly—never quit. Become the best husband you can: https://bit.ly/deamarriageyoutube In this vital conversation, we dig into: The Power of Example: Ricky shares the profound influence his adoptive father had on him—an injured Korean War vet who, despite physical limitations, found ways to teach essential life lessons through other men in the community. The takeaway? You don't need to be perfect to be present. “He taught me how to fight, how to lead, and how to read a room, and most of all, how to believe in myself.” Breaking the Mold of Fatherhood: While many men were taught to mask their fears, Ricky's dad encouraged open conversations—even about being scared. The result? A relationship built on trust, honesty, and emotional strength. “If I was scared, I could talk to my dad. I could be real with him.” The Legacy Continues: Ricky opens up about adopting his youngest son, Shane, from Korea—a full-circle moment born from his own adoption story. He and his wife's journey shows the beauty and challenge of choosing family, and how nurturing love can transform lives. Life Lessons from Sports (And Beyond): From backyard football to the Super Bowl, Ricky reveals that greatness is about more than athletic talent—it's about grit, finishing what you start, and lifting up others along the way. This episode goes far beyond football, exploring the valuable lessons passed on from Ricky's father, the challenges of growing up and raising resilient children, and the importance of finishing what you start. Here's what research and observation highlight about: Evidence suggests that 82% of adults believe their parenting style was influenced by the way they were raised. Studies show that roughly 95% of adopted children develop secure attachments with their adoptive families. Research estimates that 80% of internationally adopted children benefit from open conversations about their adoption story. www.thedadedge.com/535 www.thedadedge.com/alliance https://thedadedge.com/bark catwatters.com rickywatters.com @rickywatters @officialrickywatters @rickywatters https://www.linkedin.com/in/rickywatters/
