Evan and Tiki react to the Steelers making a stunning pivot, hiring Mike McCarthy and ending the franchise's decades-long tradition of young, defensive-minded lifers. They debate what it means for the Rooney family, whether this signals a new era in coaching philosophy, and how the quarterback dominoes could lead to Aaron Rodgers following the Favre script to Minnesota. Then the show takes a hard turn into pure insanity as the Pro Bowl somehow adds Shedeur Sanders, sparking a rant about how meaningless the “Pro Bowler” label has become. Calls roll in on officiating, the need for tech like a chipped football, and why the NFL never adjusts kickoff times even when weather is predictable. Evan also hits a quick baseball note with Harrison Bader landing in San Francisco, before the hour closes with a full Jets fan meltdown, a Mike McCarthy hiring regret spiral, and the ultimate coping mechanism: the only explanation is that God is a Patriots fan. Plus, a last-second cameo from the Roberts household to cap it all off.

ESPN Exec has Three Very bad Ideas for Jets to add QB

JetNation Radio; NY Jets Podcast

Just when you think the worst ideas in regards to how to fix the Jets QB situation comes from “randos” on x, along comes ESPN and outdoes all of them. https://api.spreaker.com/v2/episodes/69525921/download.mp3 From the worldwide leader in sports, an nfl executive said the Jets would have available to them, Geno Smith, Tua Tagovaiola or Kyler Murray.  And no, we’re not joking. Directly from ESPN.com: This notion isn’t exactly bold — all three quarterbacks appear to not be in the long-term plans of their current franchises. But they are each former Pro Bowlers and several teams have a glaring need at the position each year. “Do the Jets get one of those three — that’s really the question I have,” an AFC executive said. “They could go young and load up for the 2027 draft of quarterbacks, but the head coach [Aaron Glenn] probably needs to win, so he might need more of a reliable option.” Miami and Arizona are saddled with large guarantees on deals with Tagovailoa and Murray, respectively. Murray would make more sense to New York, given Tagovailoa’s ties to the AFC East, but not everyone is convinced Arizona owner Michael Bidwill would pay a significant portion of Murray’s $37 million in guarantees for him to not play in Arizona. Smith’s contract is more manageable, with $18.5 million already guaranteed for 2026 (another $8 million becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the new league year). The 35-year-old spent his first four seasons with the Jets, throwing 28 touchdowns and 36 interceptions before moving on. The Jets will need to make significant plans for a veteran passer regardless. Let’s look at each one realistically. Geno Smith: Say what you will about Woody Johnson, but even this move is beneath him.  The owner is going to try to sell the fan base on a new quarterback as he raises ticket prices yet again.  There is no way he’s going to sign off on bringing in a former malcontent as his production dips to unacceptable levels after enjoying a few good seasons. Tua Tagovailoa: Tua’s extensive and concerning concussion history should make him an automatic “NO” for the Jets.  Especially if the plan is to draft a quarterback who won’t be rushed into action. Kyler Murray: An undesirable option who would be the  “best” of the three.  You can at least say Murray is young(ish), has had some success and beat you with his arm and legs.  There would of course be questions about his work ethic, but the Jets would have to dismiss that and say it has been overblown or he outgrew his laid back approach. The post ESPN Exec has Three Very bad Ideas for Jets to add QB appeared first on JetNation.com - New York Jets Blog & Forum.

Mailbag Mode, Straight From Slack Jeff Risdon opened a Friday Detroit Lions Podcast with a true mailbag. Questions came straight from the DLP Patreon Slack. No prep. No cue cards. Honest reactions, with the caveat he might tweak opinions later. It made for sharp talk about the Detroit Lions, the NFL draft, and one spicy coaching debate. Draft Talk: Tackle Targets and Fits Asked for a favorite offensive tackle for Detroit, Risdon spotlighted Caleb Tiernan of Northwestern. He called Tiernan solid, not spectacular, and praised how seldom he loses. That reliability matters. He drew a line to what the Lions missed at right guard when Kevin Zeitler was at his best. Rarely beaten. He thinks Tiernan is a second round target who can be a long-term capable starter rather than a headline Pro Bowler. He also likes the Utah tackles if the first round is the move. Caleb Lomu got the nod for upside. Manu, he said, looks better right now, but Lomu offers more raw clay, especially if he boosts lower-body power. Blake Miller from Clemson earned a mention too. The traits are there. The misses can be loud, reminiscent of early Taylor Decker. Miller did take a step forward this past season. Big picture, with Sewell already a star, the Lions do not need two high-priced stars at tackle. They need the right complement. Tiernan's profile fits that lane. Coaching Watch: Kafka's Fit in Detroit Mike Kafka came up next. Risdon pushed back on pinning the Giants' struggles on Kafka after Brian Daboll reclaimed play-calling. He remains a Kafka fan. What impressed him most was Kafka's ability to craft run and pass protections that a limited offensive line could actually execute. That translates to Detroit. Risdon did note a concern. When a featured weapon was healthy, the Giants leaned too hard on that player. He cautioned that in Detroit, with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, smart balance matters. Do not ride Gibbs into the ground. Still, he would welcome Kafka's protection design and problem-solving into Allen Park. Divisional Weekend Leanings On the NFL divisional slate, he paused to confirm matchups, then zeroed on Bills versus Broncos. He likes teams without the bye against rusty top seeds, especially when the bye team lacks recent experience. Denver's defense and home field carry real weight. The flip side is Josh Allen. Sharp quarterback play can shred rust. Risdon weighed that tension on air as he worked toward a pick. The mailbag did what the best Detroit Lions Podcast episodes do. It put clear football problems on the table. Draft fits. Scheme translation. Game-state nuance. Straight talk for a playoff push. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e18WCdCopD4 #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #calebtiernan #northwesterntackle #secondroundpick #kevinzeitler #rightguard #caleblomu #utahtackles #manu #blakemiller #taylordecker #mikekafka #runandpassprotections #jahmyrgibbs #davidmontgomery #billsvsbroncos Learn more about your ad choices. As the Bengals head into the 2026 offseason, the future of elite edge rusher Trey Hendrickson in Cincinnati remains one of the organization's most intriguing and uncertain storylines. Hendrickson, a four-time Pro Bowler and recent NFL sack leader, has been a disruptive force since joining the Bengals and was among the league's most valuable free agents at the end of the 2025 season. The central barrier to a long-term return has been contract negotiations. After a contentious holdout and talks that dragged through the 2025 offseason, the Bengals and Hendrickson eventually agreed to a one-year, $30 million deal that lets him hit unrestricted free agency in 2026. That new contract did not include a no-tag clause, giving Cincinnati the option to tender him with the franchise tag next spring — albeit at a high cost. Most recently, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported that the relationship between Hendrickson and the Bengals “has likely deteriorated beyond repair,” largely because of the bitter contract negotiations the past year. Fowler suggests that while the Bengals could use the franchise tag to retain him, Hendrickson appears poised to explore opportunities elsewhere in a strong market for pass rushers. A long-term return to Cincinnati now seems unlikely, especially given Hendrickson's desire for security and the team's investment in younger edge talent. Realistically, then, the possibility of Hendrickson returning to the Bengals hinges on one of three outcomes: Cincinnati uses the franchise tag and he plays another year while negotiating long-term. Hendrickson and the team agree on a new extension (less likely per the latest intel). He tests free agency and signs elsewhere. At this point, Fowler's update points toward #3 as the most probable scenario — meaning a Hendrickson return to Cincinnati isn't off the table, but it's far from likely. Sherm recaps the Steelers’ heartbreaking loss to the Browns, Shadur Sanders’ development, Lamar Jackson and the Ravens’ concerns, and Drake Maye’s breakthrough performance for the Patriots. Plus: what went wrong with the Lions, Green Bay’s ups and downs, and what to expect heading into Week 18. NFL playoff picture, quarterback storylines, injuries, Pro Bowlers — Sherm hits every angle. All lines provided by Hard Rock Bet. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
