Solar cars are not a gimmick, they're a moving test lab that has to survive real traffic, real rules, and real weather. We sit down with Gail Lueck, event director for the American Solar Challenge, to unpack how collegiate teams build and campaign solar-powered cars under a 90-plus page regulations book, then prove themselves in scrutineering before they ever hit the road. If you've ever wondered what it takes to make sunlight turn into dependable transportation, this conversation makes it concrete fast. Gail walks us through the two-part structure: the Formula Sun Grand Prix endurance track event at Brainerd International Raceway, followed by the cross-country American Solar Challenge for the teams that qualify. This year's route is a car lover's dream and an engineer's puzzle, heading out of Minneapolis along the Great River Road, then cutting over to Route 66 in honor of the centennial, finishing in Amarillo. We talk single-occupant versus multi-occupant classes, why “most miles covered” matters more than top speed, how optional loops can change the leaderboard, and why practicality features like luggage space and cup holders show up in judging. Weather adds a wild card: smoke haze, rain, and cloud cover can force teams to slow down and rethink their entire energy model. After that, we shift gears with Jeff's Motor Minute on IndyCar's upcoming Freedom 250 Grand Prix on the streets of Washington, D.C., then Don shares a candid review of the redesigned 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan, from the sharp interior to the turbo lag that can feel risky when you need power now.

Send us Fan MailABA on Tap is proud to sit down with Lupe Castañeda (Part 2 of 2):You can have the best behavior plan in the world and still fail if the classroom doesn't trust you. Mike and Dan pick up part two with Lupe Castaneda, and get practical about school-based ABA, BCBA leadership in schools, and the messy middle where collaboration meets real-world constraints. We talk through what it looks like when we're “not the experts” in the family system or the classroom environment, yet we're brought in because something is already going wrong, and the people in the room may not want change. From there, we get into the hard stuff most people won't say out loud: school politics, predetermined placement decisions, and how to protect your staff when they're doing great work but still getting nitpicked. Lupe shares how he approaches teacher buy-in by building rapport, talking with paraprofessionals, and living the principle of “show me, don't tell me” rather than being the BCBA in the corner with a laptop. We also explore supervision and mentorship strategies that improve retention, including bi-directional feedback, coaching, and shaping performance instead of punishing mistakes. We then zoom into tactics for bridging 1:1 ABA into group instruction: small-group DTT, instructional pacing, short learning sprints, contextual fit, and preparing students for natural environments. Along the way we unpack clinical judgment, crisis prevention, and why it matters to teach teams how to think on the fly, especially when the difference between an extinction burst and failed treatment is not obvious to educators. We wrap with burnout prevention, skill diversification, and why staying curious might be the most underrated career strategy in behavior analysis. If this helped you, subscribe, share it with a school-based BCBA or teacher, and leave a review so more people can find the show. What's the biggest obstacle you hit when trying to collaborate in schools?Tune in, drink up and ALWAYS ANALYZE RESPONSIBLY.Support the show
A recall notice can feel like background noise until it's your driveway, your garage, and your family on the line. We dig into the latest car recalls and translate the fine print into plain language, including a third-row power folding seatback issue, a roll-away risk affecting multiple Ford and Lincoln models, and a Kia Telluride power seat motor problem that can overheat and potentially cause a fire. We also talk through the kind of practical advice that actually helps, like when “park outside and away from structures” is worth taking literally. Then we lighten it up with one of our favorite segments: the Hemmings auction “guess what it sold for” rundown. The prices are a snapshot of the classic car market right now, and they're full of surprises. From a 1955 Chevrolet Nomad bringing serious money, to a giant 1990 Cadillac Brougham selling for shockingly little, we debate what makes a car desirable, what makes it a headache, and what's simply a great buy if you've got the garage space and the patience. We wrap with a quick racing calendar check, a lap through automotive history (Jaguar XK150, the Ford Taurus turning point, GM's X-car era, and key Volkswagen Beetle milestones), and a set of fast-moving auto industry headlines that show how quickly lineups and sales leaders can shift. If you enjoy car talk that mixes safety, history, auctions, racing, and real-world news, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave us a review so more listeners can find it.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.

A used car can look perfect under the lights and still come with a past you did not sign up for. We bring in Patrick Olsen, editor-in-chief at Carfax, to break down what a Carfax vehicle history report actually reveals, why “Show me the Carfax” became shorthand for transparency, and how shoppers can use VIN-based data to negotiate with confidence. We talk about the real-world mechanics behind vehicle history reporting: what service shops and dealerships share, why DIY maintenance and small repairs can create gaps, and how the free Carfax Car Care app lets owners track maintenance and get recall alerts. Patrick also explains newer tools that go beyond the past, including history-based values, reliability predictions for specific vehicles, and dependability research that shows how many models survive to 150,000 miles, 200,000 miles, and even 20 years on the road. If you're comparing a regular used car to a certified pre-owned vehicle, we dig into why “CPO” can mean different things depending on the automaker and the dealer, and why documentation is everything. Then we shift gears: Jeff shares wild global car facts in Motor Minute, and Don delivers a detailed review of the 2025 Land Rover Range Rover plug-in hybrid, covering design, interior simplicity, power, ride quality, pricing, and key competitors like the BMW X5 PHEV and Mercedes GLE PHEV.Subscribe for more straight-talk car buying advice, share this with a friend shopping used, and leave a review so more drivers can find us.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.

Some cars disappear so quietly you don't realize they mattered until they're gone. We kick things off by digging into forgotten 1960s cars that used to be everywhere, including the Plymouth Valiant Signet, Rambler American, Mercury Meteor, Chevrolet Biscayne, Mercury Comet Cyclone, and the Oldsmobile F-85 Jetfire. These aren't just trivia picks, they're a reminder that “popular” and “memorable” aren't the same thing, and that practicality can be the fastest path to being overlooked in car culture. Then we take a hard left turn into Houston Hidden Underground, because the most surprising stories aren't always on the surface. We talk through what's beneath Houston's streets, from the Buffalo Bayou Cistern, an enormous former drinking-water reservoir with a jaw-dropping footprint and echo-filled atmosphere, to the downtown Houston tunnel system that now spans miles. Heat, humidity, thunderstorms, and daily convenience all shape how this underground city evolved. We wrap with a modern luxury counterpoint: our 2025 Land Rover Range Rover plug-in hybrid review (Range Rover Sport Dynamic SE PHEV). We cover the sleek conservative design, the cabin feel, infotainment quirks, and the big headline numbers: a 3.0-liter inline-six with serious horsepower and torque, towing capability, and a ride that sets a high bar thanks to the air suspension. We also stack it up against plug-in hybrid competitors like the BMW X5 PHEV, Lexus TX PHEV, and Mercedes GLE PHEV, then finish with quick automotive history notes to put today's cars in context. If you like smart car talk with real details and a few laughs, subscribe, share the show with a friend, and leave a review. A Dakar-designed Ford Raptor T1 is about to find out what American desert racing feels like, and we're here for every gritty detail. We sit down with Matt Martelli, CEO of Unlimited Off-Road Racing, to talk about why Ford chose the Casey Folks Vegas to Reno run for the Raptor T1's American debut and what makes this run so different from the rough-and-tumble world of Baja-style courses. Think long distance, high speed, and a 550-mile day that stresses cooling, electrical systems, and durability in a way most racing formats never touch. We also get into the fun rabbit holes only off-road racing can create: what “unlimited” really means when trucks push 1,000-plus horsepower, 40-inch tires, and suspension travel measured in feet, not inches. Matt shares why the sport still leaves room for the garage-built crowd alongside multi-million-dollar teams, and we revisit the roots of short course and stadium racing through the legacy of Mickey Thompson. If you love motorsports history, fabrication culture, and the way racing tech shapes production vehicles like the Raptor and Bronco, this one hits hard. Then we pivot to the headlines: a Ford worker fired over a $1.95 cookie, and the growing trend of drivers downgrading from premium gas to regular to save money. We break down what modern ECUs and knock sensors actually do, when premium is required versus recommended, and why the real tradeoff is often performance, not instant damage.Listen now, subscribe so you don't miss the next drop, and if you enjoyed the show, share it with a fellow car nerd and leave us a quick review. Your car doesn't just get you places, it reveals what you're willing to put up with. We're back on the In Wheel Time car talk show and we jump straight into a question every owner of an older performance car eventually faces: do you modernize it, or do you move on? Don's 2001 C5 Corvette still has that old-school factory setup, so we talk through the real-world appeal of a modern aftermarket display with Bluetooth and Android Auto, and whether a $500 upgrade makes sense if the car only comes out once in a while. From there, the conversation widens into used car buying decisions that have nothing to do with bragging rights and everything to do with comfort, reliability, and how your body feels getting in and out of the driver's seat. We also get honest about turbocharged four-cylinder engines and turbo lag, especially when the transmission tuning doesn't match the way people actually drive in heavy city traffic. If you've ever needed the power now to clear an intersection, you'll know exactly why this matters. Then we shift gears into pure car culture: Jeff runs through overlooked 1960s cars most people forgot, from sensible compacts to oddball engineering like the Mercury Breezeway rear window and the early-turbo Oldsmobile F-85 Jetfire. Mike takes us underground for a Houston driving destinations segment featuring the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern and the downtown Houston tunnel system, a hidden way to escape heat and storms without leaving the city core. Send us Fan MailABA on Tap is proud to sit down with Lupe Castañeda (Part 1 of 2):If you've ever walked into a school confident in your assessment, your data, and your “best practice” plan, and still watched it fall apart by week two, you're not alone. Mike and Dan sit down with Lupe Castaneda, a longtime school-based BCBA and consultant, to talk about what actually makes ABA in schools work, and what quietly makes it fail even when everyone has good intentions. We start with Lupe's path into the field, from early exposure to children with disabilities to adapted physical education, autism support, and becoming one of the earliest full-time BCBAs employed by a Texas school district. Along the way, he shares the moments that reshaped his practice, including a hard lesson about making changes without family input and a blunt IEP meeting reminder that experience means nothing if you cannot explain what you will do for this specific child. From there, we dig into the practical heart of school-based behavior support: family-centered programming, meaningful long-term goals, parent education, and the legal and team-driven reality of the IEP process. We also break down two essentials for any behavior intervention plan or functional behavior assessment in a school setting: collaboration and contextual fit. A plan is only “evidence-based” if it can be implemented by real educators in real classrooms with real constraints, and if it respects the priorities of the student and family. This is Part 1 of our conversation with Lupe. Subscribe so you don't miss Part 2, and if this resonates, share it with a BCBA, teacher, or parent navigating school services. A three-row SUV that looks traditional can still feel shockingly upscale once you shut the door and settle in. We take you through Don Armstrong's drive of the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee, focusing on what actually matters when you're spending real money: design, comfort, tech, power delivery, ride quality, and where the value lands once the window sticker gets involved. We walk through the trim lineup, then zoom in on the Grand Cherokee L Summit 4x4 configuration with three rows and seating for six. The exterior earns praise for its clean, conservative Jeep look and familiar seven-slot grille, but we also talk honestly about why the design is starting to feel ready for a bigger modern update. Inside is where the Grand Cherokee makes its strongest argument, with standout materials, excellent fit and finish, and a cabin that feels legitimately premium. The one catch: the newer infotainment system isn't as intuitive as the previous version, and it can take time to get comfortable with it.Then we get into the numbers and the feel. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes a headline-grabbing 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic and a tow rating around 6,200 pounds. MPG is rated at 20 city and 25 highway, and we share a real-world 21.1 mpg result over more than 400 miles. We also call out the downside that surprised us most: turbo lag that shows up in certain situations. Finally, we explain why the air ride suspension is a must-have for a “smooth as glass” ride, break down pricing from roughly $40K to a $72,770 as-tested sticker, compare rivals like the Hyundai Palisade and Toyota Grand Highlander, and tease next week's review of the Land Rover Range Rover Hybrid. Touchscreens are getting bigger, buttons are disappearing, and electrification is rewriting what “good value” even means in a new car. We put all of that to the test by driving a lineup that spans luxury, mainstream EV, full-size towing muscle, and sporty sedan practicality, then calling out what impressed us and what would drive us crazy after a month of ownership. We start with the 2026 Lexus RX 450H Plus, a plug-in hybrid SUV with standout styling, a high-end cabin, and the kind of premium audio that makes you take the long way home. Then we get real about the PHEV catch: if you do not plug it in, you may be paying for capability you never use. From there we jump to the 2026 Chevy Equinox EV RS, a sharp-looking electric SUV that keeps the controls surprisingly approachable, delivers smooth ride quality, and raises the big EV question: is today's range enough, or are we all still waiting for the “bigger battery” version? We also climb into the 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor 4x4, an aircraft-carrier-sized SUV with serious torque and towing capacity, and we talk about why a hybrid could be the perfect fix for its fuel economy. After that, the 2026 Mazda 3 Turbo Premium Plus reminds us how much fun a compact sedan can be, even as we wish for a refresh and simpler infotainment. Finally, the all-new 2026 Subaru Uncharted EV surprises us with great proportions and real punch, while its range sparks an honest debate about what “urban EV” should deliver. If you care about real-world MPG, EV range, towing ratings, pricing, and the small design decisions that make a car easy or annoying to live with, hit play. B. A recall list can feel like boring paperwork until you realize it's your brakes, your lights, your transmission, and the way your vehicle behaves when you think it's safely parked. We kick things off with a Ford-heavy slate of safety recalls, talking through what's affected and why issues like daytime running light behavior, window reversal systems, hands-off detection alerts, unintended vehicle movement, and unexpected downshifts matter for real drivers and real families. Then we jump into the most addictive way to understand the collector car market: our “Guess What The Hemmings Car Sold For” game. We size up everything from a clean 1986 Chevrolet K10 square body to a heavily modified 1941 Cadillac, an '86 Monte Carlo, a 2005 Chevrolet SSR, and more. The results are a reminder that auction prices are a cocktail of condition, originality, restoration quality, nostalgia, and timing and that one outlier sale can reset expectations overnight. Yes, the 1966 Ford Bronco number is as wild as you've heard. From there, we round out the car talk with weekend racing plans (including NASCAR at Sonoma and holiday-week events), quick auto history that connects past innovation to today's engineering, and the headlines shaping the buying landscape: a Tesla crash investigation, Nissan governance drama, the steady shift toward hybrid vehicles, and why new car prices keep climbing. If you're trying to make sense of recalls, trends, and what cars are really worth right now, you'll feel right at home with us. A 12-mile road, 156 turns, and stretches with no guardrail is a different kind of “car review” of the human brain. We sit down with Pikes Peak Hill Climb driver Ben Ryan to hear what it's really like to aim a purpose-built monster at the summit and keep your eyes on the next apex instead of the thousand-foot drop beside you.Ben breaks down his journey from watching the mountain as a kid to finally earning a spot after years of applying, then going back again and again because nothing else compares. We get into the details of Big Bird, an unforgettable build that pairs a 1968 Plymouth Road Runner body with a NASCAR chassis and roughly 800 horsepower to the wheels. Ben explains how he manages focus at altitude, why course familiarity matters when corners blend together, and how tire development data can change everything when you're pushing hard on a narrow mountain road. After the hill climb, we pivot to the headlines drivers see every week. Jeff's Motor Minute digs into Ford reliability news, JD Power initial quality rankings, and why “award” stories can look very different next to recall reports. Don also reviews the all-new 2026 Subaru Trailseeker EV, covering design, cabin tech, real-world charging habits, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, range expectations, and where it sits against electric SUV competitors.Subscribe for more real car talk, share this with a friend who loves motorsports or EVs, and leave a review so more listeners can find us. Recalls and reliability headlines can feel like background noise until you're the one staring at a warning light and a four-figure estimate. We put the spotlight on five current engine problem cases that keep showing up in owner complaints, class action lawsuits, and government investigations, and we explain why these patterns matter if you're shopping new or used. You'll hear what's being reported, what kinds of failures are at stake, and why “we changed the oil recommendation” doesn't always restore confidence. We move brand by brand, from Honda's widely used 1.5-liter turbo and its oil dilution and head gasket worries to Nissan's variable compression VC turbo recall situation. We also dig into GM's 6.2-liter V8 problems in high-volume trucks and SUVs, then talk through the Jeep 4XE plug-in hybrid's mix of mechanical and electrical concerns, including fire risk and the strange but serious casting sand recall. Even Toyota isn't off the hook as we cover ongoing noise around the 3.4-liter twin turbo V6 and engine bearing failures. Then we lighten it up with summer driving ideas: water parks around Houston that offer a different feel than the biggest corporate destinations, including city-run spots and smaller neighborhood-style parks that can be easier with kids. We wrap with a first drive review of the all-new 2026 Subaru Trail Seeker EV, covering design, screens and controls, 281-mile range, charging habits, towing, pricing, and how it stacks up against competitors like the Model Y and Ioniq 5.If you got value from this mix of practical car buying advice and road trip ideas, subscribe, share the episode with a friend, and leave a review. A holiday road trip can flip from fun to dangerous in seconds, and that is why we wanted a real-world Fourth of July safety check from Texas Department of Public Safety. We finally reach a trooper out on the roads, talking enforcement, summer traffic, and what it looks like when Texas is packed with visitors and major-event crowds. We also hit a detail that sounds small but gets people in trouble fast: extreme heat and dehydration, especially when you are driving long stretches or spending hours outside before you ever get behind the wheel. Then the conversation takes a heavier turn. We wrestle with the question families dread: how do you know when someone is too old to drive? We talk cognitive decline, reaction time, and the emotional reality that a driver's license is more than permission to drive, it is freedom. We share personal stories about taking the keys, what happens when a parent forgets they no longer has a car, and how “don't drive” only works if you have a plan to replace independence with real support. We keep the car-lover energy going with our cruise-in and events calendar for the July 4 weekend, then dive into the week's automotive news. Tesla tops the Cars.com American-Made Index again, while EV representation shifts and hybrids stay competitive. We also unpack a California vehicle technology rule tied to preventing domestic violence tracking, which opens a wider debate about connected cars, location data, and whether drivers should get a true off switch. Finally, we look at how the AI boom is driving DRAM memory chip prices higher and reshaping the supply chain behind software-defined vehicles, infotainment, ADAS, and over-the-air updates. You can feel the Texas heat through the microphones, and it sparks a simple question with big consequences: where do you go when you want to race your car without doing something stupid on the street? We talk with Scott Striegel from the Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge (TMCCC), a long-running team-on-team bracket racing series that gives everyone a place to compete, learn, and hang out, whether you show up in a true street car or a full-blown track build. Scott breaks down how the points system works, what “driver rewards” mean, and why the club even added an EV drag racing class, because electric cars bring a consistency advantage when weather and track conditions swing. We also get practical about the racing itself. Eighth mile vs quarter mile isn't just a detail on a sign, it changes how cars are geared, how transmissions shift, and what a setup is optimized to do. Scott shares what it takes to make a heavy modern Dodge Charger run hard, from a purpose-built automatic transmission to driveline parts designed for serious horsepower. The theme stays grounded: this is competitive, but it's also laid back, family-friendly, and affordable for spectators who want to walk the pits, see the cars up close, and ask questions. Then we pivot to the stuff that hits your wallet: engine reliability. Jeff runs through five engines tied to major recent recall activity and owner complaints, including Honda's 1.5 turbo, Nissan's 1.5 VC turbo, GM's 6.2 V8, the Jeep 4XE 2.0 turbo plug-in hybrid, and Toyota's 3.4 twin turbo V6. To cool it all down, Mars delivers a list of Houston-area water park driving destinations, mixing big names with smaller city-run parks that can make a summer day trip feel a lot less chaotic. If you like real-world car talk with local flavor and useful takeaways, subscribe, share the episode with a friend, and leave us a review. Send us Fan MailIn this episode of the Right Hand Drive Guys Podcast, we sit down with Alan and Lupe from the J Spek Projekt to talk about the powerful connection between military service, brotherhood, and the JDM community. What started as a shared passion for Japanese cars has grown into something much bigger—a network of veterans and enthusiasts using cars as a way to reconnect, heal, and support one another. We hear how both Alan and Lupe found their way into the automotive world, from deployments overseas and discovering Japanese car culture to building some of the cleanest, most well-known project cars in the community. They share the story behind the J Spec Project, the idea of "Boost Therapy," and how a simple cruise with friends can be just as valuable as any formal therapy session. The conversation also dives into the changing car scenes across the country, from Florida to Utah and Oklahoma, the friendships built through JDM culture, and why preserving the sense of community is just as important as building the cars themselves. Whether you're a veteran, an enthusiast, or both, this episode is a reminder that sometimes the best therapy is a full tank of gas, a winding road, and good people beside you.
Your car can be perfectly fine one day and on a recall list the next and some of these aren't minor. We kick things off with a no-nonsense rundown of fresh automotive recalls, including a Hyundai software issue tied to the front camera that can accidentally trigger forward collision avoidance and cause sudden braking. We also talk through recalls touching control arms, instrument panel displays, and seat belt problems across multiple brands, plus why “it only happens once” is still a safety problem. Then we switch gears into pure car-nerd fun with the Hemmings sold car price roundup. We put real auction results against our best guesses and let the market do the talking, from a classic Cadillac convertible and a former police Chevy Caprice to a 1969 Camaro convertible, a Pontiac Bonneville, a Buick Grand National, and a surprisingly affordable BMW Z3. If you've ever wondered what condition, originality, and hype actually do to prices, this segment makes it real fast.We wrap with our cruise in and events calendar, then hit the week's biggest automotive news: U.S. EV registrations stabilizing, Tesla's continued lead, Mitsubishi teasing a stronger U.S. lineup, Mercedes updating its AMG twin turbo V8 with a flat plane crank to meet stricter emissions rules, and the expanding robotaxi race through partnerships aimed at Level 4 autonomy. We also connect high fuel prices to changing demand for full-size pickups and SUVs, and what that could mean for new vehicle shopping.Subscribe for weekly car talk, share this with a friend who checks recall notices late, and leave a review so more drivers can find the show.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. The road to the top of Pikes Peak looks beautiful right up until you imagine missing a corner. We call Richard Tomlin from the mountain to get a real-time look at what it takes to compete at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb when the sun is brutal, the air is thin, and even cell service feels like it's fighting you. Richard walks us through a huge milestone for Apex Auto Works: the ApexOSET Miata based build qualifying in the Fast 15, plus the very different challenge of keeping “Big Bird” a 1968 Plymouth Road Runner, happy with carburetor tuning across massive elevation changes. We also dig into the heart of this year's story, a Plymouth Road Runner with deep family history that gets transformed for the mountain with NASCAR-derived hardware underneath, while still carrying the little details that make it a true legacy car. From there we talk race day reality: staging cars, camping, beating the crowds on the one road in and out, and why so many drivers use onboard oxygen to stay sharp at 14,000 feet. We also share where to watch the live coverage on Racer TV, then shift gears into our racing calendar, quick hits from automotive history, and a can't-believe-it story about a thief using a Waymo robotaxi as a getaway while police come up empty. If you love hill climb racing, grassroots engineering, classic muscle cars with modern race tech, and the weird edges of self-driving car privacy, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a car friend, and leave us a review.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.
