Marvell L. Terry II (he, him, his) is a powerhouse educator, grassroots activist, and cultural organizer from Memphis, Tennessee. HIV advocacy and cultural organizing are personal for him; It was the moment he received a positive diagnosis of HIV that jump-started his more than decade-long career that has had a local, state, and national impact.Marvell was passionate about improving the health outcomes of Black gay and queer men in Memphis, that's why he started his advocacy work by co-leading an HIV ministry at Christ Missionary Baptist Church, being an HIV tester and EIS at Christ Community Health Services, and volunteering on community task forces. Not long after, he answered a higher call to leadership by founding his own organization: The Red Door Foundation (2010). Marvell was recognized as the only Black gay man living with HIV to found and lead an organization for HIV awareness and engagement at the time in Shelby County. Doubling down on his commitment to community, he started the Saving Ourselves Symposium (2013), a one-of-a-kind conference in the South for the Black LGBTQ community to address health, wellness, and social injustices. One of Marvell's biggest thrills was expanding his impact to a national scale by joining the Young Black Gay Men's Advocacy Coalition Policy and Advocacy Summit as co-chair of the Organizing Committee (2014); the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRCF) as an HIV Fellow (2015) and AIDS United as a Senior Program Manager of the Southern HIV Impact Fund (2018). He is known as a people-minded strategist: He established a leadership pipeline in the HIV movement by co-creating the HIV 360 Fellowship Program at the HRCF and improved grantmaking efforts and philanthropic funding sources within AIDS United to support organizations in the South working at the intersection of HIV and social justice.Marvell is a former board member for Hope House (Memphis, 2022-2023), an advisory board member for Wake Forest University School of Divinity, and a founding member for the HIV Racial Justice Network. In September 2023, Marvell was sworn in as a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS during the 78th Full Council meeting. His published written works on HIV research and injustices can be found in the Journal of Health and Disparities Research and Practice, Rhetoric of Health and Medicine, TheBody.Com, and more. Marvell's work unapologetically centers the lives, the culture and the resilience of Black folks. When Marvell isn't on the ground engaged in HIV advocacy and education, he's experiencing joy: grooving to the sounds of Fantasia, J.Cole, 6LACK, and JeRonelle or enjoying buttermilk pancakes with crispy edgesat any time of the day.

Join us for a conversation between Luke Messac and Kenyon Farrow on medical debt and racial justice. This event took place on November 16, 2023. Ruth Wilson Gilmore said, “Debt robs. But debt also disciplines…Today, while the imperial imperatives might be different, the role of debt is the same—to compel consent through the coercion of debt.” One of the major sources of debt is medical costs. In the United States, an estimated 100 million people owe medical debt in some form. Medical debt appears on the credit reports of 43 million Americans, and medical debt collection brought in $1.5 billion in revenue for America's 7,000 debt collection agencies. Medical debt can be debilitating, resulting in denial of care, lawsuits, seizures of bank accounts, foreclosures, property liens, wage garnishments, and arrests. While medical debt impacts people across race, gender, and class, African Americans and people with low incomes have far more medical debt than other social groups. As emergency physician and historian Luke Messac notes in his new book Your Moneyor Your Life: Debt Collection in American Medicine, “A number of broader social forces have contributed to this transformation of medical debt. These include structural racism, economic inequality, the late-twentieth-century rise of neoliberal ideology, early twenty-first century efforts to organize health care workers, social movements such as Occupy Wall Street, and shifts in health financing and ownership…third-party financing, health insurance reimbursement, social insurance, financialization, and privatization.” This event brings together Messac with Kenyon Farrow, a public health policy and communications expert, to examine how racism and resistance to a strong social welfare state have shaped changes in healthcare and medical debt, and in the process, harm society overall. They will also explore current policy and political efforts around healthcare access and debt erasure, and how confronting medical debt is a racial justice issue. Speakers Kenyon Farrow is a writer, editor, and strategist, whose work has long focused on public health and infectious disease with a focus on racial, gender and economic justice. He is the Vice President of Policy with Point Source Youth, a national organization working to end youth homelessness. He is the former Managing Director of Advocacy and Organizing with PrEP4All, and also served as senior editor of TheBody.com & TheBodyPro.com and U.S. & Global Health Policy Director with Treatment Action Group (TAG). Luke Messac is an emergency physician and a historian. He is an attending physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an Instructor in Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He received his BA from Harvard University, his MD and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, and completed residency training in emergency medicine at Brown/Rhode Island Hospital. His research focuses on the history and political economy of health care, as well as on diagnostics for emergency care in resource-limited settings. His work has appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine and online outlets including Jacobin and Current Affairs. His first book, No More to Spend, is a history of medical neglect and exploitation in Malawi. His latest book, Your Money or Your Life: Debt Collection in American Medicine, will be published by Oxford University Press, in November 2023. It tells the story of how the collection of medical debt has become so aggressive, and the impact this is having on Americans' lives. "You guys wanna see a dead body?" In 1986, it seems we all did. Audiences lined up for Stand By Me, an adaptation of Stephen King's novella, The Body. Set in 1959, the film followed four boys on an adventure that involved train dodging, leech attacks, and an unhinged Keifer Sutherland. Decades later, is there still fun to be had in the search for a corpse? Is the "Lardass" story engaging or just kinda gross? And, what is Goofy? It's January 2020. HIV and AIDS have now been in our world since 1983. We've gone from pandemic panic to people living productive, healthy lives. Yet, there is still stigma, and lack of education, and no one giving a light-hearted look at life with HIV and AIDS. But why would we? That would be blasphemous. Or would it actually help the cause. Enter Merce - an award-winning HIV-positive musical comedy web series. Wait what? Yes, Merce is a HIV-positive, musical comedy web series that dives into some hot button topics impacting today’s HIV community as well, including PrEP, slut shaming, and gay marriage. Per shame, per shame that a musical comedy has the audacity to address these issues...or should we say "Bravo, bravo, bravo!" Creator and lead character, Charles Sanchez unclosets the black cloud that should no longer hang over the world of HIV and AIDS in this candid and fun interview that shows, even a once devastating disease can bring a ray of sunshine and laughter to the world. And I show how stupid I am that I can't pronounce the shows name. It's Merce, not Merced, not Merci...Merce, Merce, Merce! About Charles (a.k.a. Merce)Charles Sanchez is a gay, HIV+ writer, performer, director and activist living in New York City. He is one of the co-founders of Skipping Boyz Productions, and conceived, writes and stars in the musical comedy web series, Merce, which was named Best HIV/AIDS Content at America’s Rainbow Film Festival in 2016 and won the Audience Award for Short Film at the 2017 Kaleidoscope Film Festival. Sanchez grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, and started his artistic life as a member of the Phoenix Boys Choir. With the choir he toured Europe, Canada, and the US, and even sang for President Carter. Sanchez moved to New York City at 19 to study performing at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. His acting career has taken him from Lincoln Center, Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre, to the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and Murry’s Dinner Playhouse in Little Rock, AR. As a director, he has staged plays and cabarets in New York, Los Angeles, and in several theatres regionally. In 2003, Charles woke up in the hospital to find out he'd been in a 3-week drug induced coma, due to advanced HIV: AIDS. Because of his diagnosis, he became an activist. He has attended the national AIDSWatch conference in Washington D.C. four times, and has been featured in public service videos for the CDC’s “Start Talking. Stop HIV.” campaign, as well as for Remedy Health Media and http://everydayhealth.com/ (EverydayHealth.com). He was a member of the HIV Divide Flash Collective led by artist Avram Finklestein and writer/activist Mark S. King, which created messaging and imagery around the viral divide between HIV positive and negative gay men. He was also chosen to be a Social Media Fellow at the US Conference on AIDS in 2016, sponsored by the National Minority AIDS Council. Sanchez has been a Contributing Editor for http://thebody.com/ (TheBody.com) since 2017, and has had essays published on http://positivelyaware.com/ (PositivelyAware.com), http://them.us/ (Them.us) and HuffPost Queer Voices. Sanchez has received many nominations at several festivals for his writing of and acting in Merce, and was named Best Actor in a Webisode at The 2016 Official Latino Short Film Festival. He was included in http://healthline.com/ (Healthline.com)'s list of HIV Honors: The Most Influential Voices of 2017, and was honored in POZ Magazine's 2018 POZ 100, celebrating people over 50 making a difference in the fight against HIV and the stigma surrounding it. Now that we’ve all seen Rise of Skywalker, we’ve brought Becky back to talk about it! On our last episode, the three of us talked about the ethical questions, hopes, and concerns we had going into this movie- this episode we revisit them, and ask, how did this movie address them? What happened with the Jedi? Did Rey get the character arc she deserved? And does Hanukkah Harry use the same merit based system of gift to child allocation that Santa Claus does? We’re pleased to have Becky Allen join us for this discussion. Becky Allen is the author of Bound by Blood and Sand and the sequel, Freed by Flame and Storm. She grew up outside Ithaca, New York, and graduated from Brandeis University with a major in American studies and a minor in journalism. She is the product manager for TheBody.com, an online HIV resource, and loves New York, brunch, and feminism. We mentioned a few links in the episode, including Hanukkah Harry, Becky’s podcast episode about The Christmas Prince, and Matthew’s Facebook live blog of the movie, inspired by Becky’s podcast. With just two days left before the release of Star Wars Episode IX, we’ve got theories! Can force users find a third path, neither Jedi or Sith? What does the future hold for Rey, Leia, Finn, and the rest of them? And how much respect will JJ Abrams have for the choices Rian Johnson made in The Last Jedi? We’re pleased to have Becky Allen join us for this discussion. Metformin is one of the oldest and most studied drugs on earth, but a lot of people in the medical community are still hesitant to prescribe it. What are the benefits of this drug for people with different health problems and needs? What does it do for weight, insulin levels and high blood sugar? Does it make people hypoglycemic? On this episode, Dr Nelson Vergel gives a presentation on different studies of metformin and why it’s a great drug to use. Testosterone-metformin combination therapy decreased total and LDL cholesterol, uric acid, hsCRP, homocysteine and fibrinogen, and it increased plasma testosterone. -Dr. Nelson Vergel Three Takeaways Metformin shifts gut bacteria and gives patients the gut biome composition of a leaner person. Metformin doesn’t decrease blood sugar to hypoglycemic level. In HIV positive patients, studies have shown a reduction in T-cell exhaustion with the use of metformin At the start of the show, we talked about why metformin is such a hot topic right now, and Dr. Nelson began his lecture on metformin, starting with its history, benefits and some of the reasons why it causes patients to lose weight. We also discussed its benefit for people with cancer, and overweight people. Towards the end of the show we talked about what people get wrong about the ketogenic diet. We also discussed; How metformin affects the gut biome Metformin’s impact on HIV positive patients Why metformin is better than berberine Metformin and diabetic mortality rates Metformin is a hot topic right now, and with good reason. It has a lot of benefits, it is affordable and it has a great many studies backing it up. It dilates vessels, it decreases insulin and blood sugar, it improves metabolism of glucose, cardiovascular protection and it also decreases weight and lipids. Testosterone and metformin work very well together when it comes to body composition and inflammation. Metformin has also shown an ability to increase lifespan for people with cancer, and it helps people with HIV a great deal. There no risks with metformin unless you have some sort of renal issue, or take a drug with a contra-reaction. If you’re going to start taking, it start low, and go slow. In this interview with TheBody.com -- the latest in our This Positive Life podcast series (available as both audio and a transcript) -- Paul discusses his life, and explains how he's happily become a guinea pig for HIV researchers hoping to figure out what makes him tick.
