Today on Rock Docs we discuss "The Song Remains the Same", a 1976 film about Led Zeppelin directed by Peter Clifton and Joe Massot. For those who haven't seen the film, or whose memory of seeing it is lost in a drug-addled haze (as it was meant to be seen), the movie starts with LZ manager Peter Grant dressed as a 1930s gangster shooting a Nazi werewolf and it just gets weirder from there. This is nominally a concert film (is it even a rock doc at all?) shot during the band's 1973 shows at Madison Square Garden, but it also includes footage shot on a soundstage in England made up to look like MSG, as well as fantasy sequences featuring each of the band's members. Originally conceived as solo efforts, Jerry Garcia’s Garcia, Bob Weir’s Ace, and Mickey Hart’s Rolling Thunder each brought something special to the Deadiverse, including songs that would become staples of live sets for years to come. Jerry’s album gave us “Deal,” “Bird Song,” “Sugaree,” “Loser,” “To Lay Me Down,” and “The Wheel.” Ace delivered “Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain,” “Mexicali Blues,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Cassidy,” and the ultimate jam warhorse, “Playing in the Band.” And speaking of “Playing,” Mickey’s Rolling Thunder also features an embryonic version of the tune, then known as “The Main Ten.” So why did the band choose to reveal studio versions of these classic numbers on non-Dead releases? We recently attended the Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival where we sat down and talked to various brewers and folks that attended. The tables were turned on us when Rob, Amy and Eric (Ian was MIA for this) sat down with Richard and Jay from The Fear of a Craft Beer Planet podcast. They are one of the first and longest running craft beer podcasts in NJ. On the eve of his 16th Anniversary with the band, Kris talks about how his predecessor Mike Mirro helped him find his musical place in Umphrey's McGee, how "Plunger" and "Believe The Lie" were among the first Umphrey's songs he helped to shape and how his playing in the band has evolved over the years. We also learn about the "Hide The One" jam, how he used orchestral percussion to achieve a "thick, pulsating tone" on the band's recent studio release and Myers takes us into his thinking process behind one particular drum solo he played during this run (and we get to hear it). He also details his experiences with other musicians, including Jimmy Chamberlin of Smashing Pumpkins, Zappa alum Mike Keneally and the legendary Adrian Belew. Then Aaron "Louie" Meyette represents the midwest well as he walks us through his unusual career path to becoming a full-time Umphrey's Mcgee employee.
