Captivating audiences since his teenage years, Eric Travers has solidified his status as a seasoned musician in the vibrant Asheville music scene. Hailing from the mountains of Black Mountain, NC, Travers first made his mark as the heartbeat behind an acclaimed Rock n Roll, Jam Band, Travers Brothership, which he co-founded with his brother Kyle at just 13 years old. Over the past 15+ years, the group has amassed an impressive catalog of 35+ published tracks and extensive touring experience. Now 31, Travers has reached new heights in 2024 with the release of his latest single, "Dead End Street," and his new role as Owner and CEO of the All Aboard Records label. Drawing from his diverse musical background in rock, Americana, and blues, Travers' emotive performances and melodic sensibilities have earned him a dedicated following across Western North Carolina and beyond, cementing his role in the local music scene. With the launch of his latest project, the Eric Travers Band, this versatile multi-instrumentalist is primed to take his artistry to thrilling new levels.1. Background and Music CareerHow did you get started in music? What inspired you to pursue it as a career? My father was a career musician who always had instruments and fellow musicians around. My first "real" drumset was gifted to me when I was 8-9 years old. It became a dream of mine when I received praise and applause from my cousins playing air guitar at the age of 3 and 4. I was inspired to start a career in music because I made enough money to barely get by as a musician and this was my end goal. All or none. I sought out a living and a labor of love. When did you first start performing and touring? My first performance was for my school, performing an Elvis Christmas song with my twin brother and father. Performing regularly started when I was 15, with my brother, playing shows from Brevard, NC all the way to Marion, NC as "Travers Brothers Band / Caution Tape", a four piece Rock n' Roll outfit with a 2010, 10 track LP. Our bandmate's father helped us with transportation for 3 years. Touring started after my time freed up, at the age of 17. (When we could drive). I made the choice to leave college for the career in music. Now the band was performing for only $200 every Thursday in Greensboro, NC. A 2 1/2 hour drive from our hometown, Black Mountain, NC.How would you describe your musical style, and how has it evolved over time?My music style is American roots music. When I was 11-13 my band "The Predatorz" played strictly Rock n' Roll like Jimi Hendrix and ZZ Top. I started playing piano and acoustic guitar at this time which was strictly music by The Beatles. "Caution Tape--> Travers Brothers Band" then came along at 14-17. And the Rock n Roll became more jam band oriented with extended guitar solos influenced by The Allman Brothers Band. Then, groove oriented funk music became a thing. My brother and I founded a very successful touring band at the age of 18 called Travers Brothership. In 2012 our debut release was very progressive, soulful, funk and rock group. For the next 4 years we toured with 7 members performing what we called "funkadelic" music. Our 3 piece horn (brass) section helped color this genre. In 2016 the lineup changed back to the original 4 members of the band including my twin brother. We had no choice but to return to a jammy, Rock n' Roll vibe to keep audiences on their toes. We had to stick to our guns and give the audience a powerful sound to make up for 3 lost players in the band.2. The Traveling ExperienceWhat is the most exciting part about traveling for your music? The most exciting part is seeing landmarks, going to new places, seeing national parks and observing the different arts and cultures. How do you typically prepare for a tour? Does your preparation change depending on where you're performing? When preparing for tour I have to make sure my drumset is ready for performance. All items must be accounted for in our vehicle and/or trailer. In the beginning I required everyone to have foodstamps. We got by with very little. When we were traveling for longer lengths of time we brought more clothes and made sure our vehicle was in proper condition. Eating nutriously required extra packing which was always tough because everyone's priorities are different. Our preparation will change if we are traveling further, flying or if we need our clothes to be nicer. Dressing accordingly is just one step "above" the audience - say, if the audience has T-shirts, we wear button downs. How do you stay grounded and connected to home while you're on the road?Staying connected to home always came with forfeiting home for the road. My dog traveled with me everywhere. The road and music were my home and a way of life.Have you ever had a surprising or unexpected cultural experience while performing in a different country or city?New Orleans, LA was a culture shock. The large but small music community was humbling. The experience of spending time in Hamburg, Germany was unexpected because some tour dates were canceled. I spent 1 week here. This atmosphere was very interesting and intimidating. 3. Life on the RoadCan you walk us through a typical day on the road for you? What's the routine like? Our road life followed a minimalist lifestyle. The band had to be weekend warriors. Days on the road started by waking up in someone else's house either on the floor or a random bed. We would normally sleep in as late as possible. We would take turns showering and get on the road asap. Play time was hard because a 4 person vote to do something is really annoying. In the van we mainly slept. There are a lot of road rules. We'd show up at a show, perform and hopefully rely on night life to prepare us for a place to crash. Hotels were hardly an option until we became established enough for a living wage. The routine followed Day of Show instructions but life on the road followed lifestyle. We all had our own lifestyle. I am epileptic so staying healthy was my main goal. What are some of the most challenging aspects of life as a touring musician?Musicians don't get paid much. This is a challenge and hard to keep a band together because of this. When keeping track of your tour dates you can see that you've played 300 shows but only once in a certain market, so they're not paying you. The hardest part is the time spent between the stage and the bus. The culture, nightlife and fun is the biggest challenge. You would believe that not getting paid is worth it, for site seeing and a good time; however, all time must be spent with comradery and focus. How do you manage the physical and mental toll of constant travel, late nights, and performing? Our band couldn't manage the physical and mental toll. We broke up after 10 years due to a mental health crisis. Alcohol was introduced to us whenever we were 14 and 15. Everyone wants to party with the artist. If you don't become part of the culture you're not doing your job. Or are you? My job was to network and find our next opportunity until and we were more established. I wrecked two vans on tour having a seizure, due to poor health. Our backs started to hurt. We didn't take care of ourselves or know how to. It can be a really hard life and managing everything is very challenging.4. Performing to Different AudiencesWhat's it like performing in new cities or countries where the audience may not know your music? The band and I stick to our guns. When you're playing original music confidently with passion and love, everyone reacts the same way. We would change our set for different audiences, though. Europe liked blues and rock. Frat parties liked dance music. Local bars liked cover songs. How do you adapt your performance for different audiences and cultures?I personally liked changing outfits and/or suggesting different songs. Say, in the south we would cover an Allman Brothers Song or play my country influenced original. Or, in a Latin culture like Spain we would cover Santana.Do you notice any commonalities in the energy or reaction of audiences around the world, or does it vary a lot? There are a few different types of shows and audiences: one is the crowd that is there for the culture, and not the music, while another is strictly listening, and then a fully supported original crowd that is mainly family/friends. A festival and jam band community always followed us. Our crowds can always mingle. Our "family". Music is a universal language. All in all our band found it's way in to a "jam band" grateful dead scene.5. Connection with FansHow do you build a connection with your fans when you're on the road?Building connection comes with personal experience or online presence. Do you have any memorable stories about a fan encounter or a meaningful moment with someone in the crowd?I remember performing on stage in front of the biggest crowd I have ever played in front of and locking eyes with my dad, who was in "awe". Also, moments in which I've inspired other musicians to pursue a career. I remember a time setting up a fans drumset for his son. What role do social media and online engagement play in connecting with your audience while traveling? These play the largest roles. Keeping fans interested can be challenging. There's only so much you can do. If you're not a strong personality then you will struggle in this business.6. Challenges of TouringWhat has been one of your biggest challenges while touring, and how did you overcome it?Getting along and my seizures. Mental health is the biggest challenge for every musician. Saying no to drugs and alcohol.Have you ever had a tour or performance go completely wrong? How did you handle it?Things have gone completely wrong before. Sometimes, admitting defeat is the best option if things are failing. But at the end of the day, if the show must go on, then it must go on. You can follow Eric on instagram @allaboardrecords and Facebook, and find his music on Apple Music, Spotify, or anywhere you like to stream!!

Do you recognize the name, Owsley Stanley? If you're not a devoted Dead Head, probably not. But he's the guy who met the Dead when they had just formed, supplied them with LSD, and helped them form their psychedelic, jam band sound. He also supplied LSD to hundreds of thousands, if not millions of others hippies. It was his LSD that would truly fuel the counterculture movement of the late 1960s. The Summer of Love wouldn't have been nearly as magical as it was without Owsley's mind-expanding psychedelics. Super-creative, virtuoso pianist, Holly Bowling joins the show in the first-ever podcast recorded in The Green Room at Garcia's Chicago. Holly shares the etiology of her genre-crossing and improvisational style in between her two incredible debut appearances at this spectacular venue - playing the music of Phish and The Grateful Dead on solo piano! The episode delves into Holly's classical training, influences, and balancing the dual aspects of meticulous arrangement and spontaneous performance in her work, highlighting her diverse approaches to both solo and collaborative concerts.Holly fondly recalls with the hosts her time learning under Phil Lesh at Terrapin Crossroads and the impact it had on her musical career and relationships. The conversation takes listeners behind the scenes of Holly's musical endeavors during the pandemic, uniquely recording while immersed in spectacular national landscapes (The Wilderness Sessions), and how she cleverly lured GreenSky Bluegrass into her world. Holly also provides a glimpse into her personal life, including her experiences as a mother and the musical talent of her young son, Ryland.HIGHLIGHTSThe whole point of playing music for other people is to connect emotionally.  It's the sameness of the human experience… we're all human doing this life thing together. My favorite shows I've ever attended are the ones where there is that kind of emotional range and depth, whether it's total joy and ecstasy to shows where I have wept in public.  -Holly Bowling on how she uses the piano to evoke the emotions and feelings of an audience, much in the same way Jerry Garcia did with his guitar.I'm really excited about it. Everyone's like, “you're doing a solo piano show, a quiet listening thing at Cervantes?” I'm like, yes. It's going to be amazing. We're gonna totally turn the expectations upside down. It's also a party.  My shows are a much more inward experience, so we're going to drop a grand piano in there, put seats in, and transform it in a way that most people have never seen Cervantes.                                                  -Holly Bowling on playing a show at the Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver on July 2, 2025, the night before Phish's run in Boulder.LINKShttps://www.hollybowling.com/https://www.youtube.com/@HollyBowlingHolly Bowling Live Shows on nugs.nethttps://garciaschicago.live/ HOLLY BOWLING SUMMER SHOWS (2025)June 13-26: Northlands Music & Arts Festival, Swanzey, NHJune 22: Tower Theatre, Bend, ORJune 30: Alpenglow Concert Series, Crested Butte, COJuly 2: Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom, Denver, COJuly 3-6: High Sierra Music Festival, Quincy, CAJuly 17-18: SFJAZZ Center,  San Francisco, CAJuly 20, 2025: Terrapin Road Show, San Rafael, CAAugust 1-3: Kaslo Jazz Etc. My long-time friend, Peter Scott Ruben, is the best guitar player I know, having personally watched him jam with some of the great rock and blues musicians of the seventies (Joe Perry in his pre-Aerosmith days and Kim Simmonds of The Savoy Brown Blues Band are two who immediately come to mind -- I read that Simmonds died two years ago in England and the band had to break up after an amazing fifty-five year run). Since then, Peter has fronted his own bands, and has also carried on his father's legacy as leader of the premier special events orchestra/band in Philadelphia, through which he met "the great one," Frank Sinatra, at a White House gig the orchestra was playing during the Reagan administration back in the 1980's. He also donned a wig a few years ago and played as Eric Clapton in a Cream tribute concert (and I seem to recall he even played a set as Jimmi Hendrix). In addition to his amazing playing, he knows way more about music than anyone in my social orbit so, now that he has embarked on an Act 3 career performing a Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin one-man tribute show (having bought performing rights to the original Nelson Riddle and other Sinatra/Darin charts), I thought it would be fun to pick his brain here on Pizza Quest regarding why he thinks Sinatra is the greatest performer of all time as well as to see if together we could create a top ten list as well as a Mt. Rushmore top four list of the greatest of the greats. It was so much fun recording this episode -- as you will see and hear -- that I plan on inviting him back to do a similar retrospective on the greatest guitar players and also another on the best bands and performing groups of our time.  Peter and I used to stay up all night during our college days talking about stuff like this, so I know he's game for it, as you will hear in this conversation in which we explore not only Sinatra's greatness but also dive deeply into the why and how of what made him the GOAT (and why Bobby Darin was the prince in waiting until he died way too young). So, as we like to say, it's more about the quest than it is about the pizza, and this time around we jump into Peter Ruben's quest for what distinguishes the good from the great when it comes to musical artists. The topic may have changed, but the game remains the same -- and the quest never ends....

The last time Brendan Johnson of Stella Ruze was on the show, it was with his bandmate Katie O'Donnell, and it was less than a week before the world shutdown in March of 2020 (Dan didn't have another in-person guest for nearly a year and a half). It's been almost five years, but Brendan comes back to talk to Dan about the band, some line-up and life changes amidst them, and how embracing improvisation and extended instrumental sections gave them their latest LP, 'Origin'. Brendan and Dan get into their love of live improvisation, namely the band Phish, and the difference between proper "jamming" and just extended soloing. 'Origin' is available December 20th wherever you get your digital music, and on vinyl through the band's website. Stella Ruze will play an LP release show at Ardmore Music Hall on December 21st with Hezekiah Jones and Brittany Ann Tranbaugh.

Brian Murray is my guest for this week's episode, and I'm happy to report that I've finally achieved my dream of interviewing a Dog. Brian, of course, plays guitar for fast-rising jam band Dogs in a Pile — which has been killing it out there this year. Brian sat down to chat with me during a break in their current Fall Tour, and we get into it all, from his regular treks as a kid to Madison Square Garden to feed his passion for live music, to meeting his future bandmates at Berklee College of Music. Brian talked to me in his deliberate and thoughtful manner about what this all means to him, his development as a musician and a human, and how his family supported and inspired his love for all things musical. it's an inspiring and touching conversation with this future jam band icon. For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email:  info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Back in June, I had author David Cain on to tell us about his book Infinite Dead: A Daily Guide to Grateful Dead Concert Performances Volume 2: July. I wanted to have him back on to talk about the first volume, which covers all the Dead shows during October. David made some time to come back on and I'm so glad he did. Very few bands deserve an in-depth look at a band's live show, the Grateful Dead is at the top of that list. Infinite Dead is a new, groundbreaking guide to Grateful Dead concerts. Authoritative and entertaining, Volume 1 features detailed reviews of every Grateful Dead concert performed in the month of October—over 200 shows, including: The three-set, acoustic-electric performances at The Warfield in San Francisco and Radio City Music Hall in New York City;Their five-night “final” stand at the Winterland Ballroom in 1974; andThirteen Halloween performances, from their first in 1966 to their last in 1991.Also included in this volume is the band's revival of “Dark Star” (10/9/89 Hampton Coliseum), “St. Stephen” (10/11/83 Madison Square Garden), and “Turn On Your Love Light” (10/16/81 Melkweg). What better month to talk about The Dead than the month of October!David Cain has been listening to the music of the Grateful Dead for over forty years, including seeing live performances of the band in twenty-five cities in thirteen states during the course of three decades. David's writing on music, sports, and other subjects has appeared in publications ranging from Addicted To Noise to USA Today's Baseball Weekly. Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra.  In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean.  Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat.  Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year.  Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. With Umphrey's, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication's “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson. When he's not behind the drum kit, Myers enjoys playing golf, attending concerts, hiking and collecting art.    Some Things That Came Up:  -2:30 Kris's multi genre style  -3:00 Rabid fans  -4:45 The Umphrey's McGee audition turned into a 21 year gig and counting -6:30 Kris's previous band was Kick The Cat  -11:00 Maintaining a list of all the venues the band has played  -11:30 Red Rocks is fave venue as well as The Fox Theater in Oakland and The Ryman in Nashville -14:00 Vic Salazar !!! "From Morning Dew to Dark Star: The Grateful Dead's Masterpiece Concert in 1973"Larry Mishkin's featured concert is the Grateful Dead's legendary performance at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium on June 10, 1973. This show is celebrated as one of the band's greatest, partly because of its remarkable opening with "Morning Dew," a song that symbolized the special nature of the event. The concert, part of a two-day festival with the Allman Brothers Band, included an extraordinary setlist and performances that have become iconic. The show started with "Morning Dew," a rare and significant opener, setting the tone for the night. The first set included 13 songs, ending with an 18-minute "Playing in the Band." The second set opened with a 22-minute "Eyes of the World," followed by Jerry Garcia singing "Morning Dew," "Stella Blue," and "Warfrat," which was a rare combination for a single show. The set also featured a 12-minute "Bird Song" and an 11-minute "Here Comes Sunshine," showcasing the band's range and intensity.A highlight of the concert was a 26-minute "Dark Star" that led into a sequence of "He's Gone," "Warfrat," "Truckin'," and "Sugar Magnolia," making for an over-hour-long jam to close the second set. The encore was equally impressive, featuring eight songs with guest performances by Dicky Betts and Butch Trucks from the Allman Brothers Band. This show exemplified the Grateful Dead's ability to create a transcendent musical experience.Larry also discusses the song "Wave That Flag," played for the last time at this concert, which evolved into "US Blues." This track, notable for its evolving lyrics and style, was a precursor to a fan-favorite encore tune.In music news, Larry highlights the release of Widespread Panic's new LP, "Snake Oil King," their first in nine years, set to be released on June 14, 2024. The band, known for their jam band status, recorded the album at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia, and it features six tracks with high-quality vinyl mastering. The discussion also touches on Dead and Company's recent performances at the Sphere in Las Vegas, noting the innovative visuals and varied setlists. The band continues to break out new tunes and maintain the excitement of live shows. Finally, a humorous note mentions a Phish fan who was banned from all MSG venues for posting a video of himself taking a bong hit inside the Sphere during a concert, highlighting the strict enforcement of venue policies. .Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast

This week, we discuss David Makalaster, often referred to as Mak 1, which brings Purple Onion to life after the ambient opening track. Mak 1 and 2 somewhat bookend the Pruple Onion record, and we discuss this first installment in near-isolation, but it's difficult to separate the two. Lots of lyrical references to unpack, and the mass of instrumentation makes for a busy and full musical experience. It's also the first exposure to Skerik's fancy sax for many fans, and boy, does he deliver. Plus, we have live cuts from over the years and lineups/iterations of Les's solo bands. Get involved:InstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

As we begin to peel back the layers of Les Claypool's 2002 album Purple Onion, we discuss the background of the record, its place in (and out) of its time, the inspiration for the title, and we discuss the title track's ambience and ambiguous lyrics. Purple Onion stands as the jump-start to the Les Claypoo; 2000s solo career in terms of writing and performing original material with the Frog Brigade, Fancy Band, Fungi Band - whatever the name of the iteration, it's based on a Claypool record. It seems antithetical to describe anything Claypool-related as pleasant, but that's the word which comes to mind for this jaunt. The vocal layering is a highlight here, as well as the imadery produced by the lyrics. Goose and their fans descended on the Hampton Coliseum for the 10th annual Goosemas weekend, and we all collectively blasted off into space for a truly epic experience. For those that are new to Goose, don't worry, we help correlate a lot of the music and our experiences to DMB ones as well. The entire experience was amazing and we hope you all enjoy our recap of Goosemas X!
