We were going to talk about the pitfalls of spark plug replacement this week, but since our good friends at Rolling Thunder Cycles closed up shop after 45 years of service we thought it'd be better to have Gerard come on and make the announcement formally. Also talked about was Buc-ee's spicy beef jerky, the legendary RTC holiday parties, and how to physically close a working business that has "lots of stuff" to dispose of. Jano Rix is best known as one third of The Wood Brothers. His dad Luther's drumming career spans half a century and ranges from Bob Dylan's "Rolling Thunder" tour to Rent and Tommy on Broadway. Their new album, Legacy Vol. 1 is an exploration of their shared history and musical connection. In this episode, Luther and Jano talk about: Luther's start at Indiana University and on the Indianapolis scene, and quickly moving to New York How playing with the Wood Brothers inspired Jano to record him and his dad playing together How the record gave them their first real opportunity to sing together Including a live track on the record The ways they trusted and relied on each other's strengths in the recording and mixing process Getting out of the weeds of mixing and zooming out to focus on the “big gestures” of a song The moment you start to “hear yourself think” Here's our Patreon Here's our Youtube Here's our Homepage
"Wade Ronsse is a touring drummer, private drum teacher, session musician, and a small but enthusiastic part of Boise, Idaho's vibrant music scene. He tours nationally with Americana/Jam troubadour Jeff Crosby and has been a part of many (mostly locally) well regarded bands, including Lounge on Fire, Wend, Sun Blood Stories, Freeman Dejongh, and Rider & Rolling Thunder. This more band-focused drumming has led to creative applications on projects spanning from heavy psychedelic rock, horn-driven R&B, psychedelic to avant-garde harp and string quartet experimental music, all the way to Honkey Tonk Country. His recording career is rooted in a deep appreciation for Boise-based musical creators, resulting in a small but cherished catalog of over 100 recordings with his favorite local musicians, collaborators, and friends. His 2025 record contributions include the surfy/twangy Day for Night with femme-fronted group Cactus Moon as well as the indie/folk and art rock Wait, Sky by Jesse Blake Rundle (released on DOE Records). When he's not behind the kit, Wade spends his time working on a small urban farm, taking long walks, reading and learning about mysticism and magick, consuming far too much Star Wars, and, of course, being a forever student of the drums." instagram: @darth_wade.r

This week, we're talking machines! One of the most critical steps in building our duck calls begins in the machine shop. Every call we make passes through one of our four HAAS machine—starting as a solid rod of acrylic and ending as a precision-cut duck call blank. Spence is joined by Daniel, Jay, and Russ—our three machinists who help keep the Rolling Thunder world turning. The guys dive into the machines they run, how they use them to craft our calls, and share their backgrounds and experiences working with large CNC equipment.
Giving back to the community is one of the most importnat things for Rolling Thunder, wether it's hosting a quick lunch for the local guys or setting up a charity golf scramble, we enjoy it all! This week Spence is joined by Haley Duffey from the Carl Perkins Center here in Somerville. Years ago Spence called Haley and asked if he and some friends could donate leftover money from a golf scramble to the Carl Perkins Center, and ever since that day our golf scrambled has donated all proceeds to Haley in hopes of making a lasing impact on the lives of young children. Haley gives us insght on her job, and how they work with young children everyday to make life better!
