Fretless guitar pioneer NED EVETT is taking his new album — and his new signature-model Aluminati aluminum-necked fretless guitar — to Europe to rock just about every big city you can name over there in support of JOE SATRIANI and STEVE VAI's “SatchVai Band: Surfing with the Hydra” continent-spanning tour. And in this interview/jam, Ned shares exactly how he'll approach his solo sets opening for the two superstar guitar heroes. He also details songs from “Strange Kind of Freedom” (the aforementioned new album) as well as dives into his many influences — from rock to Indian ragas to folk to life-changing tunes by the Who and Robert Johnson — and relives what it was like to have guitar magician ADRIAN BELEW produce one of his albums.

"It's not the side effects from the cocaine. I'm thinking that it must be love" David Bowie struggled a bit in the late 80's/90's, in a comparative sense, after the stratospheric success of Let's Dance with the MTV generation. In the tour he is partnered with King Crimson/Zappa alum Adrian Belew, with whom Bowie had recorded Pretty Pink Rose (a minor hit and an awesome song). On July 23, 1990 the band played Hartford, CT. This is the show we're listening to in this bonus episode. I play Ashes to Ashes, Pretty Pink Rose, & Station to Station. It's a very high energy gig and Belew's signature sound really suits the material.

**** There is a wild 50% off strore wide sale for all my vinyl and merch until the end of the year! https://shorturl.at/FXgkf This was one of the most entertaining chats Ive had in ages tbh. I had no real idea who or what Eric was about before this and it turns out we would get along famously. Plus he lives here. Wild.  What a fun hang this was. I tell you what, a huge part of it was that it was in my studio and thus NOT on zoom and guess what? the human connection is WAY better without digital mitigation. Who would have thought? I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.  He's a really badass musician and started very very young. His first main gig was with Adrian Belew !! I mean WHAT? I trust you know Adrian who plays in King Crimson and Talking Heads (Remain in Light anyone?? ooof!!!) He's the drummer of the excellent Dr Dog and he's worked with so many cool folks like Daniel Rossen, Nels Cline oh and you know Taylor Swift.... to name but a few. Wild knowledge of music and a bright mind.  Enjoy

https://www.youtube.com/live/kDPWpoMhYH0?si=xERQMDA5IesJSVo7 In this video, we dive into how legendary guitarist Steve Vai was initially too shy to tell his friends he played guitar. Vai honed his skills in secret, but his big reveal came when he entered a talent contest and wowed his classmates by playing "The Star-Spangled Banner" with his teeth, marking a turning point in his journey. Watch to learn more about Vai's story and how this experience shaped his incredible career. Steve Vai may be considered one of the world's greatest virtuosos today, but the guitarist — who is currently playing King Crimson's ‘80s material alongside Adrian Belew in the group Beat — was humble about his talents when he was a teenager. Speaking with Positive Grid to promote his new signature Spark Mini amp — part of the Spark 2 series of modeling amps — Vai says he honed his craft in secret. “I didn't tell anybody when I started playing the guitar, because I was kind of shy that way,” he explains. "The guitar was such a cool instrument. If you played it, you thought you were really cool. And I didn't think I was really cool. So I never told anybody.”

We've developed our On First Listen series to give us a chance to explore albums that we didn't know but had heard about for years. Maybe a friend recommended it, perhaps it was popular at a time in our lives when it slipped past us or maybe we'd seen in on all-time lists. King Crimson's debut fit into the third category as many progressive rock fans hold In The Court Of The Crimson King in very high regard. And with many talented line-ups over the years including Greg Lake on bass & vocals, Ian McDonald on keys and many other things, and Robert Fripp on guitar on this album (with future versions featuring John Wetton, Boz Burrell, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, Adrian Belew, Mel Collins and many, many more) we figured we'd give it a go. However, while the musicianship is off the charts and they experiment with many keys, times and toys (the new mellotron was driving much of their experimental sound), sometimes it's not terribly listenable. 21st Century Schitzoid Man is abrupt and in your face as a protest to the Vietnam War but isn't a toe tapper. The wistful I Listen To The Wind is 180 degree turn as a lovely ballad but is more than 6 minutes long. And Epitaph, Moonchild (nothing like the Iron Maiden song) and The Court Of The Crimson King though they have moments of beauty and style fail to land in the fun zone. While many will appreciate the music for it's complexity and degree of difficulty, it's not an album you put on in the background of a party. Perhaps our blues based rock brains aren't mature enough to understand but we find 70s era Yes and Genesis far easier to digest and enjoy. Note: We recorded this a year before releasing it as we planned for it to be our first On First Listen but scheduling necessities caused us to leave it on the shelf. We mention that it's 54th anniversary is coming up but as we release this it's the 55th anniversary of original release. You've heard him with King Crimson, Talking Heads, David Bowie, and Frank Zappa, among others, and with his pop band the Bears and on his solo recordings and tours. This fall, Adrian is following dates with the Talking Heads-fueled Remain in Light tour, which he co-led with Heads keyboardist and guitarist Jerry Harrison, with the BEAT Tour—a run drawing on his recordings with King Crimson in the '80s: the albums Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair. Of course, this is just a small—but extremely potent and influential—portion of his 30-year collaboration with Crimson founder Robert Fripp, who has given BEAT his blessing. But putting this repertoire in the hands of Belew, fellow Crimson alum and super-bassist Tony Levin, the incendiary Steve Vai (playing the guitar role of Fripp), and the Earth-shaking drummer Danny Carey from Tool promises magical performances. It's also one of the year's most-anticipated tours. As I write this, Belew, Levin, Vai, and Carey are rehearsing on the West Coast, and by the time this video posts, they will have played their first BEAT dates. So, word is likely to have spread that Belew has brought some crucial pieces of gear he played with '80s Crimson back into play. Tony Levin's love of the bass guitar began when he was just ten years old, when his focus was classical music and performing on a double bass - and he never looked back. His classical training transitioned to rock and jazz, and his reputation as an A-list session bassist filtered throughout the music industry. Of course, one of Tony's primary gigs has been holding down the bass chair for Peter Gabriel since the late ‘70s, performing on nearly all of Peter's recordings and tours. However, his resume is extensive, having performed with John Lennon, Stevie Nicks, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Lou Reed, Buddy Rich, David Bowie, and many other icons in the music industry, along with being a member of Stick Men and Liquid Tension Experiment. Tony has a brand new album set to release on September 13 titled "Bringing it Down to the Bass". He's currently rehearsing for the upcoming BEAT tour: A supergroup that also includes Steve Vai, Adrian Belew, and Tool drummer Danny Carey, who will perform music from the three King Crimson albums that were released in the '80s. Here to talk to us about these new projects and his extensive career is none other than Tony Levin.

When the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself and his band joined Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew to tour for the 40th anniversary of Remain In Light it should have been a high point of his career. With Strange Little Girls, Tori Amos approached the covers album as concept album, offering reinterpretations of 12 diverse male-authored tracks from the perspectives of an assortment of female characters. The project was inspired originally by by the homophobic and misogynistic messages which Amos believed to be prevalent in popular song at the beginning of the 21st century. “People were talking to me about how popular music was getting more violent,” she recalled in Piece by Piece. “Male songwriters were saying these really malicious things … and I really felt … that a generalized image of the antiwoman, antigay heterosexual man had hijacked Western male heterosexuality and brought it to the mediocrity of the moment.” The innovation of Strange Little Girls is to extend this debate into the realm of rock, and to recognise mainstream music as one of the primary cultural spheres in which gender roles get played out and patriarchal ideology disseminated. Supplemented by superb Cindy Sherman-inspired photography, the album is a rewarding and subversive work that boldly challenges the listener to reassess their relationship not only to each of these songs, but also to the wider cultural attitudes that they embody and endorse. “I wanted to complement the significance and scope of what she was doing. I felt like we were really in tune together, with what we were searching for,” recalled Adrian Belew, the project's guitarist. “It was very comfortable working with her. I was surprised at the whole of the record [when I first heard it]. The songs I was unfamiliar with, in the context of what I had played, really changed the way I saw her as a producer and what she had envisioned. I frequently sign Strange Little Girls CDs, and the evidence is there that this record is important to people and they make the association between me and Tori and my contribution to the record. And then I realize they were probably turned onto me by Tori, and that's an extraordinary thing for a musician to know. It is reflective of the community she builds in her work.” Playlists JV KK MM Songs of Tori Amos – Season 6 selections referenced in the episode New Age KK is team FOX JV and MM are team FUCKS. 97 Bonnie and Clyde

Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra.  In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean.  Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat.  Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year.  Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. With Umphrey's, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). Co-written by Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, and Adrian Belew, whose voice, Joe says, “is right in my range and we've been playing this live a lot. I also thought I'd inject it with a lot of staccato violins to give it more of an edge and put my own spin on it.” A studio version will appear on Joe's upcoming album, “Imposter,” slated for late spring 2024 on Melodic Revolution Records.“Frame by Frame” appears on the boxset (2 CDs/DVD/Blu-Ray) “Behind the Curtain (Live at ProgStock)” on Melodic Revolution Records/Amplified Distribution. The box set is three years in the making; the collection is made up of Joe Deninzon & Stratospheerius' 2019 and 2021 live performances at the ultimate Northeast progressive rock festival, ProgStock. Joe is the new violinist with legendary rockers Kansas, now on tour celebrating their 50th anniversary. He has played violin for the Who, Bruce Springsteen, 50Cent, Sheryl Crow, and as the concertmaster for Renaissance. The show notes for this episode are https://trumpetdynamics.com/trumpetvinnie2. I believe I left out the number 2 during the interview because I initially planned to have this be one giant episode, but wisely chose to break it into two parts. And what a part this is. Vinnie and I dove deep into the "why" of playing trumpet. The "How" tends to be rather superficial, which is why I don't have much interest in podcasts like that. But the "why" is what gets me excited, and Vinnie surely did not disappoint with his insightful comments in this one.Enjoy! What you'll hear in this episode:-More in-depth dialogue on the "good day and great day" concept...05:05-The need for healthy lifestyle for success on trumpet and overall quality of life...08:30-Self-loathing equates to loathing your environment...13:30-Why and how Vinnie has played with a rare condition that causes loss of feeling on the left side of his body...17:20-If you can feel your face, you're ahead of the game!...25:00-Shame is a wasted emotion...32:00-Keeping things real regarding the importance of trumpet...36:00-Adapting to radically changed physicality, and thoughtfully losing weight so it stays off...43:30-Music a salve for tremendous joy and intense loss...53:45-Are we "called" to trumpet?...58:45-A father's offhand comment while watching TV proves prophetic...01:03:30-Plus whatever your discerning ears deem worthy of your time and interest...Resources mentioned:Vinnie's websiteMy Fitness Pal appTrumpet Dynamics podcast with Beth PeroutkaAbout the Guest:Attending Towson University in Maryland, Vinnie Ciesielski majored in music performance on trumpet, which he has played professionally for over 50 years.Since coming to Nashville in 1992, Vinnie has played on thousands of recordings with artists such as Lyle Lovett, Travis Tritt, Tracy Byrd, Smokey Norful, Tanya Tucker, Glenn Frey, T.D. It's only talk! This week, Mike rounds out our fifth-anniversary triad of King Crimson discussions with some dialogue, duologue, diatribe, dissension, and declamation about the band's 1981 album Discipline. On this album, bassist Tony Levin and guitarist and vocalist Adrian Belew joined Crimson veterans Robert Fripp and Bill Bruford to produce some of the most complicated music in the Crimson oeuvre, with every musician devoted to making their instrument produce sounds you've never heard. But paradoxically, it's also one of their catchiest albums, dabbling in new wave and world beat in the same musical sphere as Talking Heads, who were part of the same New York scene as Fripp in the late ‘70s. Discipline may sound like a sharp, disorienting left turn for King Crimson on first listen, but the album did a lot to cement the band's music as a living document to be iterated upon. “Being on tour with King Crimson,” in the words of their film director, “is like being with the school rugby team and, at the last minute, the games teacher falls ill so they send them out with the maths master. But the team starts winning ...” Is there another band remotely like them? Their leader believes in discipline and cold showers in the morning. He practices four hours a day. Life in the group was “wretched” from 1969 to 2013. Adrian Belew says it made his hair fall out. The running gag among its 22 one-time members is “you're irreplaceable, just like the last bloke”. With great bravery and patience, Toby Amies has made a documentary about them, ‘In The Court Of The Crimson King: King Crimson at 50', and talks to us here about what he discovered. There's much to be enjoyed, not least… … the fact that Robert Fripp commissioned the film and for months refused to take part in it. … the encounter with Sister Dana, the prog rock nun from Norway. … the film's reflections upon “the metronome of mortality”. .. the thoughts and perspectives of current and former band members, particularly Bill Bruford, Bill Reiflin, Jakko Jakszyk and Ian McDonald who “broke Robert's heart” in 1969 and is still touchingly apologetic. … the religious ecstasy pursued by their audience. … how King Crimson's music feels like a deep-body tissue massage. … and the extraordinary two-minute pause that a motionless Fripp leaves before answering one of the film's questions. It's very entertaining, not least because it was made by someone who wasn't a fan but simply curious and had questions he wanted answered. This original and idiosyncratic film suits them perfectly.
