One hour just didn't seem long enough to chat with accomplished drummer, touring musician, author, teacher, percussion coach and session player - Rich Scannella. A friend of Diane's from their high school band and orchestra ... they recently re-connected at Musikfest where Rich was performing with the band Tonic. During our conversation, Rich shared stories, advice, and lessons he learned from his experiences and journey as a full-time musician. The list of bands he's played with is long and distinguished but if we must name just a few, how about Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Lady Gaga, Tonic, Brian Fallon, Nicole Atkins, Gary US Bonds, Debbie Harry, John Eddie, and so many more! Rich has toured all over the world, played the biggest stages, worked with dozens of famous producers, teaches at Rider University, and wrote a book called Ghost Notes which takes a deep dive into the many behind-the-scenes' stories he has!  When you listen to this podcast you'll realize that the key to Rich Scannella's continued success is built upon more than just his amazing talent. He credits the genuine habits of hard work, punctuality, being a consummate professional, and adapting to each situation as fundamental to making his mark on the industry. He is truly a chameleon who adapts and applies himself to any situation, and all musicians would benefit greatly from listening to his perspective and insight! Rich will be on tour in January with Tonic playing on the Rock Boat out of Miami to South America. He'll also be playing the Montage Mountainfest Outdoor Winter Music Festival on Saturday March 1st with Better Than Ezra. Summer dates will be announced soon.Follow Rich at www.richscannella.com, Instagram, and Facebook. Nicole talks about the difference between creation and nervous activity and how hard it is to distinguish between the two. We also talk about procrastination, Elvis Costello, the need to let ideas simmer, collaborating on a show, making an album, the meaning of music, the tricks to productivity, and the joy of baby steps. Bio: For two decades, Nicole Atkins has created her own brand of spectral American rock & roll. She's an old-school torch singer for the modern world, funneling her award-winning songwriting chops and genre-spanning influences — including psychedelic rock, Muscle Shoals soul, the pop grandeur of Roy Orbison, and the dark drama of Nick Cave — into six albums that have earned a global audience. Regularly featured on year-end "best of" lists by Rolling Stone, NPR, and The New York Times, Atkins has collaborated with artists from across the musical spectrum, including David Byrne, Chris Isaak, Spoon, Elvis Costello, Tommy Stinson, and the Old 97's. The title track of her major-label debut album won The ASCAP Foundation Sammy Cahn Award, and her songs have appeared in prime-time TV shows like Dexter, national ad campaigns for American Express, and on the Billboard charts, with tracks like "Domino" becoming Top 40 AAA hits. A road warrior who has performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to Late Night With David Letterman, Atkins is also a professional illustrator and painter whose work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal and No Depression.

Consisting of singer-songwriter Joe Makoviecki and stand-up bassist James Black, Jackson Pines harks forward with melodies and rhythms from the past. Combining minimalistic acoustic arrangements and taking cues from the ethos of folk, blues, and indie rock, Jackson Pines tells stories of hard times, overflowing love, disappointment, and hope. In 2017 they released “Purgatory Road” produced by Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers, The Lumineers) and “Lost & Found EP” to critical acclaim. They toured around America from 2016-2019 in a F-150 and have played such varied gigs as small theaters, clubs, festivals, schools, bars, fairs, backyards, and funerals.Their latest full-length album “Close To Home” was released July 2021, and features a full band accompanying Joe and James' signature rhythms and melodies."These guys are ‘workers in song,' to quote Leonard Cohen. They are engaged in the pursuit of music and songwriting for all the right reasons, the honest burning hunt to reach the heights." - Simone FeliceJackson Pines have opened for Old Crow Medicine Show, Margo Price, The Avett Brothers, Dr. Dog, Nicole Atkins, The Felice Brothers, Band of Horses, and more over the last few years across the U.S. and in the UK. We welcome EMELISE, a special singer/songwriter from the Rocky Mountain Front Range, whose passion for making music brings an infectious new energy to a classic sound. Ever since EMELISE started performing at age six, she has often been described as having the voice of an old soul. While she enjoys playing covers by her influences periodically, Emelise primarily performs songs from her own catalog. In 2017 and 2022, Emelise placed first in The Stars of Tomorrow Competition at the world famous New York's Apollo Theatre. She has also been on America's Got Talent and performed at the TedX Series in Denver. We first met EMELISE at the Bluebird Music Festival in Boulder Colorado this year, where she shared the stage with folks like Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, Langhorne Slim, Nicole Atkins and Margo Price and left the audience in awe. It is Christmas time, and while this isn't a Christmas episode per se, it is the gift that keeps on giving. If you've ever heard Nicole Atkins sing, you know there's something eerie, calm, haunting yet beautiful about her voice. There's a sense of mystery, a compelling sound that keeps you coming back for more. Perhaps this has something to do with where she's from, a small town not far from the Jersey beaches, maybe 40 minutes south of New York City. If you've ever been to the Jersey shore, you know there's something in the water. Something that lures you to the insanity of the boardwalk during the summer, but you also know there's something more appealing about being there in the dead of winter, when no one else is around. You've got it to yourself. Listening to Nicole Atkins brings back those feelings—the beautiful calm of being somewhere on your own, almost all alone. In this episode of For Songs, Nicole joins me from her home in Nashville, which was filled to the brim with her newest album Memphis Ice. Recorded in Memphis in one day, Memphis Ice is Nicole's Judy Garland moment. She stripped down songs from her slick, enchanting 2020 release Italian Ice and recreates them here, and the results are breathtaking. We talk about four songs—Promised Land, Domino, Mind Eraser, and Captain. Nicole discusses her songwriting process, how she was able to do more with less, and how her hometown still seeps into her music. Please welcome Nicole Atkins to For Songs.

Wheels Off with Rhett Miller

Nicole Atkins joins Rhett from her home in Nashville to talk about the new album that she's working on, accidentally getting a record deal, and writing songs about Twitter. You'll hear the two old friends (and songwriting partners) discuss her most recent record, Memphis Ice, why shyness is a waste of time when you're a musician, and how “doing the work” is the only thing that you can control. Nicole Atkins is a singer-songwriter from Neptune, NJ. Her style combines 50s-style crooning with psychedelia, soul, and 80's punk, rendering a stunningly unique and infectious sound. She has released 6 stellar studio albums, and has collaborated with extraordinary artists including Scott Walker, The Avett Brothers, and Joe Russo's Almost Dead. In this episode she shares fascinating insights about her flourishing musical life with listeners, and you won't want to miss what she has to say! Chelsea is the founder of Dirty Dollhouse, a band that played this past Musikfest in Bethlehem and is made up of.. Chelsea Mitchell Guitar / Lead Vocals Eric Lawry Drums / Percussion / Backing Vocals August John Lutz II Electric Guitar Joshua Machiz Bass Atwood Magazine had this to say about Dirty Dollhouse... "In all Dirty Dollhouse's musical works, you can feel the homey Nashville vibe, wrapped like a warm blanket around your body. Her music is inspired by folk, country, and pop so as to create a brand new intimate genre of her own. She is often compared to artists like Nicole Atkins, Kacey Musgraves, and Brandi Carlile. Mitchell, who has got a very unique vocal range, considers herself a singer/songwriter; as her songs represent an autobiographical vibe, it almost feels like reading and flicking through someone else's diary pages." This week I'm talking with Reed Watson, a founding partner at https://www.singlelock.com/ (Single Lock Records). Launched in 2013 in Muscle Shoals, AL (and recently expanding with an office in New Orleans, LA) Single Lock has released a litany of successful projects from the likes of Lera Lynn, Nicole Atkins, Erin Rae, Penny & Sparrow, Cedric Burnside, and many more.  Reed walks us through what a label release plan looks like, answers that ever-pressing question of “how do I get signed?”, and offers his advice to artists looking to take the next steps in their career.

Her recording career began in 2011 with an alt-country album whose title asked: Have You Met Lera Lynn? We hope you've met her by now because in the seven years since, the Athens GA-turned-Nashville TN songwriter has emerged as a fascinating and dynamic artist with a grasp of sound and production along with her mesmerizing voice. Her newest record finds her co-writing and collaborating. Plays Well With Others is a set of co-written duets with some important indie artists, including Peter Bradley Adams, Nicole Atkins, JD McPherson and the album's producer and record label boss John Paul White. We listen to the record in detail and burrow into what the songs say about Lera Lynn's vision and journey so far.
