In this episode of the HVAC School podcast, Bryan and Jim discuss strategies for growing an HVAC business, focusing on the importance of maintenance contracts, consistent service, and effective branding. Drawing from Jim's 15 years of experience running a successful HVAC company in California, they explore how maintenance contracts not only provide consistent revenue but also create valuable training opportunities for technicians. The conversation emphasizes that maintenance contracts are fundamental to building company value. Jim shares that when he sold his business, the number of maintenance contracts was a key valuation metric. These contracts tie customers to your company, provide consistent work during shoulder seasons, and offer technicians crucial repetitive practice with equipment. Bryan adds that maintenance provides technicians with opportunities to observe normal equipment operation repeatedly, which builds troubleshooting skills through pattern recognition. Both hosts stress the importance of consistency in growing a business. They note that large, successful HVAC companies aren't always the most technically excellent, but they deliver consistent service that customers can rely on. Jim introduces the marketing concept of "TOMA" (Top Of Mind Awareness), sharing how he used branded coffee bags as thank-you gifts to keep his company in customers' minds even after service calls were completed. The discussion concludes with an examination of White Rogers' contractor branding program, which allows HVAC companies to put their name and logo on thermostats, creating another touchpoint for customer awareness. Key topics covered: How maintenance contracts increase company valuation and create customer loyalty Using maintenance as a training ground for developing technician skills The importance of consistent processes and documentation when scaling a business Creating "Top Of Mind Awareness" (TOMA) with customers through strategic touchpoints White Rogers' contractor branding program for thermostats Benefits of Sensi thermostats and their app features, including multiple temperature sensors Different pricing strategies for customers with and without maintenance contracts The importance of documenting extended warranty information on invoices How service departments can weather economic downturns better than installation-focused businesses   Get contractor branding on your Sensi thermostats today at https://hvacrschool.com/contractor-branding.  Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? Ti sei mai chiesto/a cosa rimane di noi dopo la morte?Spesso ci soffermiamo a riflettere su questi interrogativi, senza riuscire a trovare risposte definitive.

In this short episode of the HVAC School podcast, Bryan and Tom Lorenz from Copeland talk about the new Sensi equipment interface. This product has been in field trials for months and will be launching in February. It will also be featured at the 2025 AHR Expo in Orlando. You can learn more about when and where the product launch will be at AHR at https://ahr25.mapyourshow.com/8_0/sessions/session-details.cfm?scheduleid=197.  Sensi is launching the new Sensi equipment interface module (indoor and outdoor), which eliminates the need to pull additional thermostat wire, and it's great for upgrades from A/C units to heat pumps or single-stage or multi-stage units. These have a strong wireless connection that can be picked up approximately 100 feet through walls. The ideal indoor application will be whenever you have single-stage to multi-stage upgrades and can't pull more wires. Outdoor applications are best for A/C-to-heat pump conversions and upgrades from single-stage to multi-stage. This module also contains outdoor sensors and can work with accessories like dehumidifiers. The Sensi equipment interface module has been tested in extreme weather conditions and has proven its durability. These will be launched as part of a kit with indoor and outdoor modules and a Sensi Touch 2 smart thermostat. The Sensi Touch 2 will also receive an upgrade to make it compatible with the new Sensi equipment interface module. The Sensi equipment interface module will also come with contractor branding capabilities, which is an option for Sensi smart thermostats and traditional White-Rodgers thermostats.    Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? In this informative episode of the HVAC School podcast, host Bryan Orr sits down with Tom Lorenz to talk about some of the Sensi thermostat features, particularly aux lockout and balance point. Tom leads the traditional and smart thermostat lines at Copeland and has over 25 years of experience in the industry. The discussion focuses on two key features of heat pump thermostats: auxiliary lockout and balance point. Tom explains that auxiliary lockout is crucial for energy efficiency, as auxiliary heat (whether electric or propane) is typically more expensive than heat pump operation. All Sensi thermostats now include this feature, which can use internet weather data or a physical outdoor sensor to determine when to engage auxiliary heat. Balance point settings are complex, and there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Factors like heat pump efficiency, home insulation, local climate, and energy costs all play a role in determining the ideal balance point. They emphasize the importance of contractors understanding the specific equipment and secondary heat source when setting up a system for optimal performance and efficiency. The conversation also touches on Sensi's approach to thermostat design, prioritizing ease of use and essential features over feature bloat. Tom highlights Sensi's commitment to user testing and creating intuitive interfaces for both contractors and homeowners. The podcast concludes with resources for listeners to learn more about Sensi thermostats and advanced HVAC control strategies. Key topics covered: Auxiliary lockout feature in heat pump thermostats Balance point settings and factors affecting them The importance of understanding equipment specifications for proper setup Sensi's design philosophy focusing on user experience Different methods for determining balance point (logic-based, internet weather, outdoor sensor) Energy Star certification requirements for thermostats The evolution of thermostat technology from mercury bulbs to smart controls The Sensi app and its features, including remote sensor integration The importance of contractor education in proper thermostat setup Resources for learning more about Sensi thermostats and advanced HVAC controls   Visit Sensi's site at https://sensi.copeland.com/en-us, and learn more about Sensi's contractor branding at https://hvacrschool.com/sensi.  Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? In this HVAC School podcast, Bryan and Tom Buescher with Copeland discuss dual-fuel heat pump systems as an intermediate step towards more sustainable heating solutions. They talk about the overall goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from residential heating and cooling, which accounts for over half of home energy use. While heat pumps can provide higher efficiency, simply switching everyone to electric isn't realistic in the short term. Factors like grid capacity, infrastructure, and consumer comfort have to be considered. Dual fuel systems allow for a hybrid approach - utilizing heat pumps to provide the bulk of heating, with gas heating as a backup for the coldest stretches. This arrangement allows more heat pumps to be adopted now while still ensuring warmth and meeting consumer expectations. It bridges the gap during this transitional period as grids adapt to more renewable generation. Key topics covered: Tom's industry background The role of location - dual-fuel makes the most sense in northern climates zones 3-5 currently Electrical factors - service capacity, indoor air temp, wiring Existing home challenges - ductwork, insulation Staged operation of dual fuel systems Role of hybrid approaches during transitions New universal controls and thermostats enabling these dual-fuel setups Overall, Bryan and Tom have a nuanced discussion about creating real progress incrementally, meeting consumer needs alongside policy goals. Considering both environmental and practical perspectives is key.   Visit Copeland's website at https://www.copeland.com/en-us and Sensi at https://sensi.copeland.com/en-us. The Outdoor Biz Podcast

Imagine a world in which women no longer doubted themselves. A world in which you believed anything was possible and that there were no fears or glass ceilings holding you back? Sensi Graves loves helping women do badass things. Brought to you by Show Notes How were you introduced to the Outdoors? I grew up actually 20 minutes down a dirt road in northern California. So in a really rural town in Mendocino County in Northern California. There are 320 people in my town and 50 kids in my high school. I grew up on 80 acres and my mom was an avid skier. After she graduated high school, she lived in Utah for a number of years. My Mon and my Dad were ski bums out there, and I've always lived an outdoor life. We weren't allowed to watch TV growing up. I have three brothers and we were always playing outside, always playing games, and thankfully we were taken on ski trips and wakeboarding trips and a lot of outdoor time growing up, and so it's been a part of my blood forever. How'd you get into kiteboarding? Kind of a roundabout story. Actually, my mom died when I was 16, and after that, my dad was looking for things to fill that void, and he, one summer when I was 18 years old, said, we're going to learn to Kiteboard. And I was like, what? I've never even heard of this before. And he was having us watch some videos, and I was like, what? What are we doing? I don't even know what you're talking about, but he took my three brothers and me out to North Carolina to a place called Rio Water Sports, which at that time and still is the premier kit board school in the US. And we took a week's worth of lessons. I fell in love with it and actually ended up going back there to coach a few years later as a kiteboard instructor when I was a junior in college. Tell our listeners about professional kiteboarding competitions and how they work. To give listeners a picture, you are essentially wakeboarding but driving your own boat. So you have a harness on your waist, you have 20 meters of lines, and then you have a kite, basically like a big piece of fabric, essentially with an inflatable leading edge. That is pulling you across the water, and you're using that kite to generate power with the wind, utilizing the wind to pull you across the water, essentially. So it's like the combination of sailing and wakeboarding. You're doing sailing tacks back and forth. You're utilizing the wind just like sails do. And so there are a variety of disciplines within kiteboarding. You have racing just like sailboat racing. You have big jump disciplines, kind of the thing kiteboarding is known for the most, and the awe factor is when people go really high in the sky. But it actually takes a lot of skill to jump really high, and so that's another discipline. Then there's freestyle, which is doing tricks in the air, kind of like behind what you would see behind a wakeboarding boat. Back rolls and front rolls and tantrums and various things. And then, the discipline that I competed in was park riding. And so that is much like on the snow. You have rails and boxes and things; we have those same features floating in the water. You just recently launched a swimmer brand in 2012. What inspired that? I launched that before I became a pro kiteboarder. I launched that when I was coaching kiteboarding. I was in the water every single day, and I quickly grew tired of the swimwear that was on the market because it was really either one of two categories, really fashion-forward but didn't say put, or really performance-oriented but wasn't beautiful to wear. So I just had this idea to make something that was that combination of both. I had no experience and no business background, no design background, and no manufacturing background. I was 23, and it was, I mean, an immense learning curve. And how's it going? It's super competitive. The swimwear market's extremely saturated. I believe that a lot of business is innovation, perseverance, and luck as well. Establishing myself as a kite boarder and growing my personal brand, the swimwear company grew simultaneously. So we were the first kiteboarding-specific swimwear brand, and that really enabled us to get a bit of a foothold in the market. We really have an established group that we cater to. And, for us, it's just about keeping consistent, always improving the product, but keeping consistent messaging. Our whole mission is empowering women in sports and in the outdoors and helping women feel good in their bodies so they can do what we all wanna do, which I believe is move with ease in the world and have as much fun as possible exploring this beautiful planet. Is it sold online only or also in shops? We have swim shops as well, kind of all over the place. It's predominantly through our e-commerce site, though, sensigravesswim.com. You're also a woman's empowerment speaker. What type of speaking engagements have you done? This is something that I've started doing over the last two years. A kick in the butt from the pandemic when, in the beginning, I was like, ah, is anyone gonna buy swimwear? What am I gonna do? And I've always had this desire to teach. I taught kiteboarding for a long time. I still put on women's kite camps and retreats. I still lead and facilitate groups, and I know that a lot of people looked at me and said, wow, you have an amazing shiny life. You're a pro kiteboarder; you have your own swimmer line. It looks super badass on the outside. But as we all know on the inside, you're like, wait a second, I'm not enough; why don't I feel badass? And so the more I spoke to that on my social media, , um, the more people really resonated with it and the more I was like, gosh, this message, I not only wanna serve women, but all humans in helping people that look successful on the outside, feel successful on the inside. And so what I speak on a lot is confidence and feeling worthy in who you are and what you're doing because I believe that it's only from that place of internal worthiness that we can go out and shine in our light and actually make an impact on the world. So, I speak to anyone that will have me, but in terms of niching down people that are looking to overcome imposter syndrome. So people in business and, I've spoken to a couple of real estate agent groups, people in the outdoors,  and then, young girls. Women and young women are dealing with a lot of social media. It's. Extremely difficult for high school students. Do you have any suggestions or advice for anybody wanting to get into kiteboarding? Yeah, definitely, for sure, to take a lesson. If you can find a school that's near you. If you're around any sort of body of water, just google kiteboarding in your area or take a trip to a kite school if you have a little bit of disposable income to spend on that. But you'll wanna make friends with a Kiteboarding school and just learn about the sport. I would say start watching some videos to get comfortable with the terminology, cuz there's so much that when you get right in and you're like, wait, what? People are telling you this, and you have to figure out this. So just start to spend time getting immersed... And then, if you really wanna come in, I would say buy a trainer kite and start practicing flying the trainer kit. That's something you can do by yourself without an instructor. And it is really good to learn how the kite flies, and then you can take a lesson from there. Do you have a favorite piece of outdoor gear that costs under a hundred dollars? Yes, I actually do, it is by this company called Vessel. V S S S L. They have this small coffee grinder, so it's a little portable coffee grinder. We actually took it on our road trip down to Toto Santos last year. My husband and I and a couple of our friends were in a caravan down to our wedding. And we used that little thing every day for grinding up our beans, and it's just a cool piece of technology. Do you have any favorite books? I read a ton. I'm a pretty voracious reader. I have my favorite book list. How to do the Work by Dr. Nicole LePera You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero Follow up with Sensi: sensigravesswim Facebook Linkedin Instagram Twitter

Tom Lorenz from Sensi joins the podcast to talk about the launch of the Sensi Touch 2 thermostat. The Sensi Touch 2 smart thermostat is compatible with room sensors, which makes it an efficient and effective thermostat. Smart thermostats are becoming more common in homes, especially as we focus on HVAC efficiency. Designers are aiming to make smart thermostats user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing, easy to install, and driven by data (via sensors). Installation is easy for contractors, as it relies on push terminals and cleanly covers up the previous thermostat's installation site. The Sensi Touch 2 requires a common wire, but it has easy-to-use push terminals that allow wires to click into place. It also has dedicated accessory terminals for add-on equipment like dehumidifiers. You can also pair the Sensi Touch 2 with its respective app to program the thermostat. Smart maintenance automatically alerts homeowners about poor performance or efficiency. These sorts of alerts can offer peace of mind for the homeowner. The room sensors allow the Sensi Touch 2 to manage home comfort by collecting data from several locations of the house; you can sync up to 15 room sensors to the Sensi Touch 2 thermostat. As with other Sensi thermostats, the Sensi Touch 2 has contractor branding capabilities. You can get your company name and number programmed into the main display so that the customers know who to call whenever they need something. You can learn more at procontractorbranding.com.  Tom and Bryan also discuss: History of Emerson, White-Rodgers, and Sensi controls Personal data and privacy concerns with smart technology Smart thermostat design and aesthetics Energy Star certification Sensi Lite (coming soon) Warranty information   Learn more about the Sensi Touch 2 at https://hvacrschool.com/sensitouch2.   Learn more about the HVACR Training Symposium or buy a virtual ticket today at https://hvacrschool.com/symposium.
