Sicard Hollow's Parrish Gabriel & Matt Rennick - Twice As Nice

We are so excited this week to have Parrish Gabriel and Matthew Rennick of Sicard Hollow joining us on No SImple Road!Nashville's psychedelic punk-grass rockers, Sicard Hollow, grew up sick of any existing institution telling them who and what to be. Now, as they navigate adulthood, they're equally tired of the music institutions telling them what their music should sound like—so they dunked it in patchouli and a skate-and-destroy ethos that brings an enduring sound into the modern age. Before the band met in 2018, none of the members ever considered playing bluegrass. Matt Rennick (violin) was working on electronic music, Will Herrin (mandolin/vocals) was playing guitar in rock bands, and Alex King (guitar/vocals) was barely playing music at all. After a few jam sessions, the bluegrass just kind of happened. Since adding Parrish Gabriel (bass) in the Fall of 2019, the band has been on a journey of self discovery within the genre while challenging themselves to make it their own.We talk with Matt and Parrish about coping with the realities of being on the road, the importance of having a network of friends and family that you can rely on when not touring, how it feels to actually be breaking genre molds with your music, Matt's side project 'Magec' and his personal struggles with mental health and what he's doing to keep his head on straight, Parrish's love of driving, and a whole lot more!Check out www.sicardhollow.com for all their tour info, merch, news, and more!No Simple Road Intro Music Created By ESCAPERFREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20Make Sure to visit our friends at Fire On The Mountain for some amazing food at one of the 3 locations in the Portland area or one of the 2 locations in the Denver area!Check out the exclusive, limited edition SMARTWOOL / GRATEFUL DEAD collaboration HERE!!! Phil's style can best be described as unpredictably reflective, delivered with sharp accuracy, and rooted in the grand tradition of joke-telling.Phil, being a life-long Deadhead, jumps right into the conversation with us about the music of the Dead, his journey through Dyslexia and how that has shaped his life and career, creating his special 'Ooh La La', how his comedy style can be seen as improvisation, why he started to write a book, and a ton more!Check out Phil's hilarious new special 'Ooh La La' on his YouTube channel and head over to www.philhanley.com for tour info and more!No Simple Road Intro Music Created By ESCAPERFREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20Make Sure to visit our friends at Fire On The Mountain for some amazing food at one of the 3 locations in the Portland area or one of the 2 locations in the Denver area!Check out the exclusive, limited edition SMARTWOOL / GRATEFUL DEAD collaboration HERE!!! We're so stoked to have Nick Millevoi of Grassy Sound as our guest on No Simple Road this week! For guitarist Nick Millevoi, all manner of music can be a source of inspiration, including bachelor-pad “exotica” albums of the 1950s, surf-rock records of the '60s or even old Hollywood cowboy tunes – at least if those influences are put into a modernist compositional and improvisational blender. Millevoi's usual outfit, the Crazy Horse-meets-Coltrane band Desertion Trio, has released four ultra-potent albums since 2016. But he was inspired by his nostalgic sonic fascinations to compose a fun set of tunes to perform with frequent keyboard partner Ron Stabinsky, dubbing their duo project Grassy Sound. The pair's debut album of those songs – The Sounds of Grassy Sound – will be released, digitally and on vinyl, via Destiny Records on April 22, 2022. The disc features such Millevoi-penned highlights as the groovy album-opener “Skylark” and the melody-rich “Lu Fran,” both of which showcase his gritty electric-guitar lyricism and Stabinsky's Hammond B-3 swirl. Then there's “Flitzer,” an essay in bent surf guitar that has a noisy improv section with a Twilight Zone air. The first video from the album is rocking live take on “Flitzer. We talk with Nick about creating noise as music, playing shows creating the most in your face music as possible, life altering music moments, how he had no choice but to be a musician, how he balances his musical career with a day job, and a whole lot more!Check out the new album 'The Sound Of Grassy Sound' on Bandcamp and everywhere music streams! No Simple Road Intro Music Created By ESCAPERFREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20Make Sure to visit our friends at Fire On The Mountain for some amazing food at one of the 3 locations in the Portland area or one of the 2 locations in the Denver area!Check out the exclusive, limited edition SMARTWOOL / GRATEFUL DEAD collaboration HERE!!! Paul is the author of the new book 'Lost And Found In The 60's' coming out on November 8th, 2022!James Fadiman, microdose researcher and Author wrote, "This novel is excruciatingly accurate and totally outrageous. Justison has captured the extravagance of the time: the interplay of sexual liberation, psychedelic experiences and coming of age that made the community so intense and inviting. Was drug use so extensive and casual? You bet. Was casual sexual connecting so extensive and easy? Oh my, yes. The 60s, including its dark, scary, lonely, confused reality is all here, as well as the ecstasy, the kindness, and the sharing. If you weren't there, this is as close as you're going to get to knowing what you missed. The stories, the people, the vision- enjoy the trip."We had an absolute blast talking with Paul and we're sure you're going to dig it too.Head over to www.unsolicitedpress.com for more info and to buy the book!No Simple Road Intro Music Created By ESCAPERFREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20Make Sure to visit our friends at Fire On The Mountain for some amazing food at one of the 3 location in the Portland area or one of the 2 location in the Denver area!MUSIC IN THE COMMERCIALS BY AND USED WITH PERMISSION OF:CIRCLES AROUND THE SUNOUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA. This week is something special! We're going back to the beginning...no famous musician, no artist, author, or comedian. This is back to basics No Simple Road with our brother Nathaniel leading the way. Out of all the episodes that we have done in the past I am sure the three of us would agree that this is the most important one to date. We are super stoked to have the one and only Steve Kimock as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Steve Kimock has proved himself a master of fluid improvisation for over four decades, in the process inspiring music fans with his transcendent guitar speak voiced through electric, acoustic, lap and pedal steel guitars. With his multi-decade reputation as a blazing psychedelic guitarist versatile enough to touch almost all aspects of American music.Once touted by Jerry Garcia as his “favorite unknown guitar player,” Kimock has also performed as part of Bob Weir's Kingfish and toured in both 2007 and 2014 with Bob Weir's band RatDog, in addition to post-Grateful Dead ensembles including The Other Ones, Phil Lesh & Friends, and the Rhythm Devils featuring Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. We get right into a super heady conversation that begins with what we think a tree's experience of being alive is like, finding "the moment" and if there is ego involved in it or not, what Steve sees as 'celebrity' and how he's managed to not find that space, why he loves to "find his way" when playing music, how we evolved as a species to gather with music as our centerpiece, and a whole lot more!Steve is currently on tour all over the US so head over to kimock.com to find out more!No Simple Road Intro Music Created By ESCAPERFREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20 For 20% off Grady's Cold Brew PROMO CODE: NSRMUSIC IN THE COMMMERCIALS BY AND USED WITH PERMISSION OF:CIRCLES AROUND THE SUNOUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA.
