Pastor Laurel Bunker is someone you should get to know. For roughly 14 years, she served Bethel University (Minneapolis, Minnesota) in several influential roles, with increasing responsibilities, from Dean of Campus Ministries to Vice President of Christian Formation. In having recently transitioned into a new chapter beyond Bethel, she is working on her Ed.D. in Higher Education, researching the struggles and staying power of African American women who navigate predominately White Christian institutions where they aren't well represented in leadership positions. Pastor Bunker has served in parish life as well as the parachurch sector with Young Life, for example, and is a graduate of Luther Seminary and Hamlin University. If you don't know what grits are, be sure to ask her! It was a pleasure for The Rev. to catch-up with her, share some of their connections to the First Baptist Church of Glenarden, and highlight how proud they are of the grit, faith, courage, and continued compassion those rooted in the Black Church tradition continue to display in spite of assorted challenges. Take a listen!________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Connect with Pastor LaurelInstagram________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Connect with TWU Student MinistriesFollow us on Instagram

Welcome to a brand new season on Real Life where I share a story I wrote about a young man who whose doubts, feelings of failure and struggles lead him on a identity journey that revives his faith. In between each chapter, I craft a conversation between what I imagine is happening in the spiritual realm. Pastor Laurel is back talking maximizing leadership with Jo and Steph. In this highly practical episode, Pastor Laurel shares from her personal experience and tools and resources which have helped her move forward into all God has for her. A practical way to maximize your leadership: Divide your paper into two down the middle. Write your gifts and dreams on one side and fears and vulnerabilities on the other side. Draw yourself in the center. Put the people you trust most on one part of paper and people you trust least on the other. Who are the dream busters and the people you need to let go? Who are the people who encourage you and spur you on in your dreams? What resources/steps can you explore next to grow further in your leadership? Resources mentioned: Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead - Sheryl Sandberg Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy - Sheryl Sandberg How women rise - Sally Helgesen, Marshall Goldsmith Send Jo and Steph your resource recommendations on social media: Twitter: @LeadStoriesVox Instagram: @LeadStoriesPodcast Facebook: LeadStoriesPodcast Connect with Jo at www.josaxton.com @josaxton Connect with Steph at www.pastorsteph.com @pastorsteph Subscribe on iTunes to have the podcast automatically download to your device every week or listen at www.leadstoriespodcast.com www.leadstoriesmedia.com Don’t forget to check out Lead Stories Community at www.leadstoriesmedia.com/community Lead Stories resources at: www.leadstoriesmedia.com/resources
