Lou Phillips, Director of Church Relations for the Center for Faith, Sexuality, and Gender, joins Dr. Turman to discuss his work in Christian sexual ethics apologetics, how churches make an idol of marriage and sex, the way to reach out to LGBTQ+ people, and why the culture finds its identity in sexuality.    Show notes:    Lou Phillips starts by sharing his testimony, why he works in teaching Christian sexual ethics in an apologetic setting, and how he's been received by secular audiences (1:50). They turn to consider how marriage has become an idol in the church and how Christians seek fulfillment in marriage rather than in God (11:20). Phillips and Dr. Turman talk about why sexuality, tied together with suffering, has become the biggest obstacle for our culture coming to Christ (18:17). They dive into the issues of identity, why culture finds it in sexuality, and whether sexual sin is worse than others (29:19). Phillips goes into a complex practical question: Should Christians with homosexual attraction call themselves gay (43:40)? They close by returning to how churches need to do better at supporting single people, which is equally as fulfilling as marriage—it needs to be the crux of the entire argument for Christians (56:02).     Resources and further reading: The Center for Faith, Sexuality, & Gender “What does the Bible say about homosexuality?” Dr. Jim Denison Embodied: Transgender Identities, the Church, and What the Bible Has to Say Dr. Preston Sprinkle   About the host   Mark Turman, DMin, is the executive director of Denison Forum. 2023 is a critical window of time for the Chicagoland Church, which has  welcomed refugees who have been waiting 24-30 months to come here-- alongside unplanned arrivals from the quick evacuations of Afghans, the growing stream of Ukrainians, and bus arrivals from Venezuela and Cuba. Keith Draper, Regional Director of Church Relations for World Relief, says we are seeing an incredible window during this time to engage the nations like never before in their own back yard. Today's topic: A word otherwise unused in the NT is chosen by Peter to command all his readers to “clothe yourselves” with humility. These one-time (hapax legomena) words can be interesting. What might be the implications in 1 Peter 5:5?

He gives a glimpse into his daily routine as a hospital chaplain and shares with us the joys and challenges he faces dealing with people who are often terminally ill. After jumping right into the heavy stuff we discuss his upbringing as a pastor's kid, his time in the Word Faith Movement (https://www.equip.org/perspectives/word-faith-whats-wrong-with-the-word-faith-movement/)and how he was introduced to the early church fathers and the impact their teaching has had on his life.  He is also co-host of The Areopagus podcast on Ancient Faith Radio with Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick. He shares his experience being a non-Orthodox Christian on an Orthodox Christian platform. This leads us into how Orthodox Christianity and the early Church Fathers have impacted him, how he has implemented some practices from early Christianity to enrich the worship life of his own church, and what it's been like to touch "multiple Christianities." Lastly Pastor Mike shares what his pastoral role is like being "the new guy" at an established church with over 200 years of history—and the challenges and joys that come with it. It is not unusual for tough choice decisions to be made in health care. In those situations, what help can patients, their families or the clinical team receive? Health care ethics committees and health care ethics consultants provide guidance to patients, their families and clinicians in hospitals and health care delivery sites across the United States and throughout the world. According to the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities, “The goal of ethics consultation is to “improve health care outcomes through the identification, analysis and resolution of ethical issues in health care institutions,” How might better access to these resources be made more available. How might their impact be assessed? In this first episode, of a two part series, our guests explore the impact that ethics consultation has in the continuum of care, and dive deeper into just how big of an impact this service can have in clinical care. Welcome to episode thirty-nine of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I am joined by a good friend and a wonderful thinker and minister, Dr. Corey MacPherson. Corey has served, for the last seven years, as the Associate University Chaplain and the Protestant Campus Minister at Colgate University. Prior to that Corey served for eight years as Vice President for Spiritual Development and Church Relations at Eastern Nazarene College. Corey, and his wife Edie, have also been church planters, founding the Northshore Church in Stony Brook, NY. Corey has written numerous devotionals as well as articles on preaching and has been a regular contributor to the Huffington Post. Corey earned a Master's Degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University, a Master of Divinity Degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Asbury Theological Seminary. Corey and I got to know each other through his ministry at ENC and serving on a lengthy committee assignment together for the denomination. In that time, I grew not only to have great respect for Corey's gifted mind, but also grew to value his wise and discerning heart. I have a great deal of respect for Corey's ministry – especially to college students. And I think he has a lot to teach us about how to minister in a culturally diverse and religiously pluralistic context.
