What does it really look like to lead with courage, advocate for yourself (and others), and embrace vulnerability as a strength? In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking with Mary Beth Plank-Mezo, who is the Vice President of Staff and Cultural Development at Full Sail University and has been with the university for an incredible 36 years. Her leadership has touched so many across the campus — and I know firsthand how impactful she's been. We recorded this conversation live in studio at Full Sail, and you'll hear how Mary Beth's leadership journey has evolved over the years, from being a quiet observer in meetings to becoming a powerful voice and advocate for change. She shares the pivotal moments that shaped her, including the time she walked into the founder's office and asked to switch departments (talk about bold self-advocacy!) and how she helped start the university's Staff and Cultural Development department. We talk about: Why asking for what you want is so important (even when it's scary) How to deal with “no” - and why it doesn't always mean “never” The value of listening first and co-creating a vision to build trust and buy-in What happens when leaders show vulnerability (and how it fosters innovation) Why women often hold themselves back and what we can do to push past that The three layers of advocacy: for yourself, by others, and for others Mary Beth also shares what continues to fuel her passion for mentoring and growing new leaders and how she sees her role now as ensuring the next generation is ready to take the reins. This is one of those episodes that will stay with you, especially if you've ever questioned whether your voice matters (spoiler: it does). Tori Hope Petersen has a story to tell - one that gets to the heart of how we find our way through trauma and self-doubt to a place of self-acceptance and purpose. As someone who grew up in the foster care system, emancipating at 18 without a forever family, Tori had to navigate a lot of uncertainty and pain. But through that journey, she's learned invaluable lessons about the power of community, the necessity of vulnerability, and the freedom that comes from embracing your own worth. In our conversation, Tori unpacks the lies she used to believe - that self-love was selfish, that she wasn't worthy. These were patterns passed down, not just in her own life, but across generations. And unraveling them required immense courage. But Tori discovered that the act of sharing her story, the good and the bad, was integral to her own healing. It was a way of breaking cycles, of finding belonging, of using her voice to speak life into others facing similar struggles. Tori's story is a testament to resilience, to the transformative power of vulnerability. This is a conversation that gets at the heart of how we overcome the lies we've internalized, how we learn to love ourselves, and how we step into the fullness of who we're called to be.Tori Hope Petersen is an author, speaker, Bible teacher, and lover of people. Since coming to faith, she has shared her testimony and life as authentically as she can to help and offer hope to others. Tori is known for her fierce advocacy work for foster care, adoption, and vulnerable children. At home she is a wife and mama who enjoys cooking with her children. After working at a few (ok several) jobs, she realized she didn't like being told what to do, and didn't like managing people. So she started her business and loved it! She has guided, launched, directed and overhauled everything from small start up ventures to multi-million dollar private companies, consulted with hundreds of people in the areas of entrepreneurship, marketing, brand partnerships, event production, and music management, and weathered failures and missteps that have given her experience and knowledge that she uses to help her clients sidestep them. Michelle's sweet spot, as a problem solver, connector, advocate, and persuasive force, is the ability to jump into any problem and help find the best solution while helping her clients access the knowledge they need to get unstuck in their business. My guest today is Kari Warberg Block. While we had technical difficulties during the recording, I enjoyed my conversation with her. Her words inspired me, and I am sure they will inspire you, too. Despite limited resources, she identified a gap in the market and saw the potential to build a successful business.Kari revolutionized the industry by introducing non-toxic pest control solutions through her unwavering determination, innovative approach, and successful lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C.. Today, Kari has transformed her small pest control business into a $360 million empire.Kari's story inspires aspiring entrepreneurs, demonstrating that anyone can achieve extraordinary success with passion, perseverance, and vision.Even more, Kari is known by most as a #KindnessRebel, which means caring enough to stand up and speak up for yourself. www.earthkind.comThis track was made by my daughter, Jasmine. How do we express aliveness and honesty through our voices? How do our relationships with moving, interruptions, and presence help in the journey of finding authenticity through the sounds our voices make?I feel blessed to record this conversation with Marisa Michelson. Marisa has been building a body of work that examines singing through the multidimensionality of the human being / becoming. When I first found Marisa's work, I was stunned that someone has not only asked the questions I grapple with at various points in my journey, but has sincerely explored them with the devotion, love, and skill they deserve. In this conversation, we discussed Marisa's process with composing music, teaching, and exploring the voice in service of freer singing, healing, self-growth, sexuality, and spiritual inquiry. We explored non-verbal expressions, feeling saturated with life, the connections between limitation and liberation, and the practice of presence. To connect with Marisa:Marisa's websiteListen to Marisa's music Sappho Fragments and Tamar of The River.Vocal De-Armoring Community Weekend on Oct. 25-27th, 2024 in Ancram, NYThe Vocal De-Armoring Channel on Mighty NetworksJoin Marisa's newsletter at the bottom of this page to hear more about her upcoming workshop on Primal ScreamingHere's Marisa's bio: Marisa is a multiple award-winning composer of music-theatre, musicals, oratorio and choral works, and was the founding director of the psychedelic vocal performance ensemble Constellation Chor | an immersion in voice, movement, and spirit which performed throughout New York City and international for seven years, debuting a new music composition with the NY Philharmonic at Lincoln Center in 2018. Her musicals have been produced off-Broadway, her oratorio was performed many times in NYC and in Salt Lake City, and you may hear some of her music wherever music streams. Marisa has been obsessed with all the magic that is the singing, voice-giving, expressive human for over two decades, exploring the uniqueness of solo, ensemble and multiply interweaving voices as a composer, a performer and a sought after somatic singing teacher. Somehow, voice-giving and its relation to the body, spirit and psyche has continued to call her forward - no matter the musical genre, and beyond any binary between performance and healing, composition and improvisation, process and product. After almost two decades of devotion to the Libero Canto School of Singing (a primary lineage of hers), she created the School of Vocal De-Armoring, a somatic and holistic approach to working with singing and voice-giving in a way that connects us more intimately with the layered dimensions of Self. Vocal De-Armoring is not focused on particular aesthetic sound outcomes, though aesthetic improvement - which is subjective - is an important byproduct, but, instead, on self-connection and on learning to sing from a place of honesty. At the same time, Vocal De-Armoring practices help a person develop musical and vocal mastery. Vocal De-Armoring is also about de-conditioning, and Human-ing from a place of Truth. Marisa lives, works, plays and teaches in Ancram on Mohican land in upstate New York. If you enjoyed this podcast, consider booking a reading with me. Last year, Independent Sector published research on how advocacy by the nonprofit sector has evolved over the last 25 years, and specifically, how it has severely declined, with only 31% of nonprofits reporting advocacy activities over the last 5 years. Compare that to the year 2000, where more than double that—74% of the nonprofit sector--was participating in advocacy activities. That dip in advocacy has multiple rationales, including increased confusion about what counts as advocacy and experiencing “advocacy fatigue” from how long advocating can take to create long-term policy and systems change. To better understand how collaboratives CAN participate in advocacy to support policy change and their collective goals, we talk with Arts for LA, an arts advocacy organization that supports creative arts and jobs in Los Angeles County, California. We learn about the Creative Jobs Collective Impact Initiative (CJCII), and how they have used data to strengthen their collaborative and advocacy efforts. To learn more about how collectives can get involved in advocacy (and how to avoid or mitigate advocacy fatigue), we hear from Ricky Abilez and Gabriel Gutierrez from Arts for LA, and Adam Fowler from CVL Economics. They share what has worked, what has been challenging, and how partners with different motivations and backgrounds can still work together to achieve advocacy wins.Resources and FootnotesArts for LACreative Jobs Collective Impact InitiativeCVL EconomicsResource - Arts for LA Campaign CenterWebinar -Public Comment: A Webinar on Using Your Voice for ChangeVideo -Creative Jobs Collective Impact Initiative (CJCII) Report about Policy RecommendationReport -The Retreat of Influence: Exploring the Decline of Nonprofit Advocacy and Public EngagementWebinar –Advocacy: What You Can and Can't DoMore on Collective ImpactInfographic: What is Collective Impact?Resource List: Getting Started in Collective ImpactThe Intro music, entitled “Running,” was composed by Rafael Krux, and can be found here and is licensed under CC: By 4.0.The outro music, entitled “Deliberate Thought,” was composed by Kevin Macleod. One of the most powerful things you have, that is directly linked to your confidence, is your VOICE. And I don't just mean what you say, though there is so much power in that. I mean what you put out into the world for other people to see, hear, feel and experience. Your words, sure, but also the sharing of your beliefs, knowledge, opinions, stories. Your truth, as you see it. Back in the day, very few people had their voices heard beyond their inner circle – but in an age of global connectedness that has changed. How do you, how can you, and how will you use your voice? Here to help us with all the how's is Amy Green Smith. Amy is a certified and credentialed life coach and hypnotherapist, masterful speaker, and courageous communication expert. Amy uses her roles as coach, writer, podcaster, and speaker to move individuals to a place of radical personal empowerment and self-worth. With her focus on helping people “find their voice”, she is highly sought after for her uncommon style of irreverence, wisdom, and humor. There's a quote that says “it only takes ONE voice, at the right pitch, to start an avalanche” – I share that as a reminder that your voice has power. Even with your knees shaking, palms sweating, with your head filled with doubt, your heart pounding with uncertainty, stumbling over your words – USE YOUR VOICE. When Kiley first joined our GUIDED community, she was happy to find a place to be in community. She had been using the Akashic Records to build trust in herself and her messages as she moved through her spiritual awakening, and GUIDED gave her a place to be with others who had been moving through something similar. But it was the Expansion Calls, where members are regularly called upon to speak and share, that she realized she had been resisting using her voice. In this episode Kiley tells us how sharing on these calls magnified the healing she was ready for and helped her heal faster. This is a must listen if you've been feeling (and ignoring) the nudge to speak up and share what you're moving through with someone. As we often say, nobody can do this work for you, but you don't have to do it alone! Share your voice and open up to healing. We discuss: How Akashic Records sessions provided a deeper understanding of what was in alignment and how her daily messages were guiding her Why our workshops Release Fear and Past Life are pivotal for Quantum Manifestation How being a member of GUIDED has supported her growth as an energy medicine practitioner Why Line Activations are an important tool to come back to in order to balance and ground How to understand the purpose of energy kinks (fears, resistance and blocks) and move through them Our newest A Line Within workshop, Resistance, will be released on Feb 12th in GUIDED LINKS Be GUIDED - join our membership community and gain access to Resistance and the Quantum Manifestation workshop along with all the other benefits of being a GUIDED member ASK A QUESTION - once a month, Ashley and Laura will answer your questions on a special Q+A episode of the Aligned podcast CACAO LAB - use ALNWITHIN10 to receive 10% off your order!
