Today I'm joined by returning guest Tiffany Hawk - author, book coach, and longtime collaborator - to talk about why sharing your story matters, especially when you don't feel ready. We explore how many accomplished professionals get stuck in what I call the “expert trap”, relying on expertise and credentials while holding back the personal stories that actually create connection.Tiffany shares insights from her work helping women write meaningful books, along with her own journey of returning to writing after years of self-doubt.We also talk about the messy reality of creativity, why the first draft is rarely pretty, and how community and accountability can make all the difference when you're working on a book, talk, or other thought leadership project. This conversation is especially meaningful during Women's History Month, as we reflect on the power of women using their voices to tell the stories that shape culture and create change. Your story is not just your story. It's part of a larger narrative about whose voices are heard and whose are erased.I'm thrilled to have Janice Gassam Asare back on the podcast. She's an organizational psychologist, equity consultant, and author of the new book Rise and Resist - and this conversation went places I didn't expect. What struck me most is how Janice reframes resistance. Not as something dramatic or career-ending, but as the small, daily choices we make: amplifying someone else's idea in a meeting, speaking up when it's uncomfortable, refusing to let an important story quietly disappear. Those aren't small acts. They're how culture actually changes. We also get into what it takes to develop your voice when you've spent years being rewarded for staying in your lane. If that hits close to home, this episode is for you.Janice and I talk about:Why storytelling is preservation and power, not just communicationHow personal stories build connection that expertise alone never canThe everyday acts of resistance that shape workplaces and culture more than we realizeHow to find your voice when you were taught not to rock the boatWhat to do when you speak up and face criticism or pushback for itAbout My Guest: Janice Z. What if the real reason marriages fail isn't a lack of connection but years of staying silent and avoiding conflict? Licensed marriage and family therapist Colette Jane Fehr joins us in an attachment-based discussion to discuss her new book The Cost of Quiet: How to Have the Hard Conversations That Create Secure, Lasting Love (releases February 3, 2026). As a Type 7, Colette shares how even optimistic, future-focused types can fall into avoidant patterns, sidestepping day-to-day disputes and brushing problems under the rug to "keep the peace." We explore how silence (as well as to damaging reactivity) often lead to emotional disconnection, self-abandonment, and essentially "quiet quitting" your marriage. Drawing from attachment science and evidence-based therapies, Colette gives us tools to approach our spouse with openness, honesty, and vulnerability. Whether you're the one staying silent or living with someone who won't speak up, this conversation will show you why a good relationship is worth fighting for—and how to start having the hard conversations that create secure, lasting love. Send us a textIn this episode of Beyond This, Matilda speaks directly to the spiritual community about the cost of silence. As violence, dehumanisation, and state-sanctioned harm unfold globally — including the recent actions of ICE in the United States — many spiritual people feel overwhelmed, confused, or unsure whether it's their place to speak. This episode explores why neutrality is not the same as peace, and why spirituality that avoids accountability becomes complicity.Matilda examines the misalignment between faith, particularly Christianity, and the harm being justified in its name, asking hard but necessary questions about belief, responsibility, and integrity. This is not an episode about politics — it's about conscience, courage, and what it truly means to live your values.A grounding meditation is included to help listeners regulate fear, reconnect to inner truth, and find the steadiness required to speak from clarity rather than reactivity.Content WarningThis episode discusses state violence, death, misuse of religious belief, and systemic harm. You'll learn:How to recognize when your resistance may be spiritual in naturePractical and spiritual ways to protect and strengthen your voiceWhy prayer, discernment, and obedience are your greatest defensesThe truth about what God asks of those He calls to speakThis conversation will remind you that your voice matters, your message is sacred, and you are never fighting alone. Now I'd love to hear from you! Retired Senator Debbie Stabenow discusses the importance of strong leadership, raising our voices about what we believe is wrong, and her continued advocacy for issues like hunger and mental health. “I may have retired, but I have not retired my voice. At this time, where so much is at stake, nobody should be retiring their voice,” she says. “We should be electing people that show some leadership,” she continues. “Hunger is pretty basic. This should be a moral issue for all of us. It's a moral issue. It's an economic issue. It's a national security issue. It's about health and well-being.” Host Billy Shore shares her sentiments. “My mantra has been to be civil but not silent. I think there's a way to talk about these things, but we've got to get people over the fear of speaking up about what they believe in,” he states.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Louisa Green, leads international communications at Canva. From my first interaction with Louisa late last year, I was fascinated with her energy and knew I wanted her to come on to the podcast. Why you might ask? It's not often these days you come across humans that carry equal amounts of kindness, intelligence and a genuine desire to help others. Louisa is one of those people - having had many conversations with Louisa before this podcast, I thought I knew the person sitting in front of me but what I truly loved about this conversation is discovering how Louisa's early context and family experiences paved the way for the person she is today. From a bustling childhood home to helping her sister build her now, very successful business, Louisa stumbled across the power of media and how it could supercharge your business. From Wework to Octopus energy and now leading international comms at Canva - Louisa has a gift for telling stories that lead to brand growth.Really hope you enjoy the is episode as much as we did! What does it really look like to lead with courage, advocate for yourself (and others), and embrace vulnerability as a strength? In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking with Mary Beth Plank-Mezo, who is the Vice President of Staff and Cultural Development at Full Sail University and has been with the university for an incredible 36 years. Her leadership has touched so many across the campus — and I know firsthand how impactful she's been. We recorded this conversation live in studio at Full Sail, and you'll hear how Mary Beth's leadership journey has evolved over the years, from being a quiet observer in meetings to becoming a powerful voice and advocate for change. She shares the pivotal moments that shaped her, including the time she walked into the founder's office and asked to switch departments (talk about bold self-advocacy!) and how she helped start the university's Staff and Cultural Development department. We talk about: Why asking for what you want is so important (even when it's scary) How to deal with “no” - and why it doesn't always mean “never” The value of listening first and co-creating a vision to build trust and buy-in What happens when leaders show vulnerability (and how it fosters innovation) Why women often hold themselves back and what we can do to push past that The three layers of advocacy: for yourself, by others, and for others Mary Beth also shares what continues to fuel her passion for mentoring and growing new leaders and how she sees her role now as ensuring the next generation is ready to take the reins. This is one of those episodes that will stay with you, especially if you've ever questioned whether your voice matters (spoiler: it does). You'll hear Michelle's candid stories—from launching unexpected ventures like The Culinary Studio to her partnership with a music group—that reveal her resilience and passion for following her intuition. As Diane and Michelle discuss the power of sharing vulnerable stories, Michelle opens up about the anxiety she's faced and how she's turned her experiences into speaking topics that resonate deeply with her audiences. Her frameworks, including From Stuck to Unstoppable and Passion to Profit, provide practical steps for anyone feeling stuck or seeking more clarity and confidence. Michelle's story is a reminder that by saying “yes” to opportunities, connecting with the right people, and being willing to share your authentic self, you can create incredible impact and growth for both yourself and others. Diane and Michelle talk about: Finding clarity on the message you want to share and ways to bring your unique story to life Connecting with audiences authentically by sharing vulnerable, relatable experiences Understanding the power of frameworks and storytelling to guide and engage listeners Gaining inspiration to overcome obstacles and embrace your next speaking opportunity About Our Guest: Michelle Massman has been a visionary entrepreneur for over 30 years and knew, even as a teen, that she wanted to own a business someday. After working at a few (ok several) jobs, she realized she didn't like being told what to do, and didn't like managing people. So she started her business and loved it! She has guided, launched, directed and overhauled everything from small start up ventures to multi-million dollar private companies, consulted with hundreds of people in the areas of entrepreneurship, marketing, brand partnerships, event production, and music management, and weathered failures and missteps that have given her experience and knowledge that she uses to help her clients sidestep them. Michelle's sweet spot, as a problem solver, connector, advocate, and persuasive force, is the ability to jump into any problem and help find the best solution while helping her clients access the knowledge they need to get unstuck in their business.
