When we, believers under the New Covenant, look at the Ten Commandments through the lens of Jesus's fulfillment of the Law, we better understand the first and greatest commandment. God is Yahweh. He is the One true God who rescues His people first, then leads them to live for Him with undivided hearts.

By Matthew Blackwood - Exodus 20:2-3 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me."
Today is day 270 and we are studying The First Commandment. 270. What does it mean to have no other gods? It means that there should be nothing in my life more important than God and obeying his will. I should worship him only and love, revere, and trust him above all else. (Psalm 95; Jeremiah 10:6–10; Luke 16:10–15; 1 John 2:15–17) We will conclude today by praying Prayer 92. For Satisfaction in Christ found on page 673 of the Book of Common Prayer (2019). This week, Pastor Chris Donald continues our Ten Commandments series with “No Gods Before Me.” From Matthew 16 and Exodus 20, we learn that radical love for God means giving Him our full allegiance and keeping nothing in His face as a rival. Obedience isn't legalism—it's love. Discover how the first commandment is not about rules but about relationship, and how radical love for God empowers us to live free from idols.
Kingdom of Priests | Week 2 Ever wondered why the Ten Commandments are such a big deal, or what it really means to be called a Kingdom of Priests? In this series, we dive into Exodus 20 and talk honestly about how God's words guide everyday life—helping us live with purpose and love, not just rules. This series explores how God invites everyone into something bigger: bringing hope, justice, and grace into the world around us.
Why did God give us the Ten Commandments? Are they outdated rules, or could they actually be the path to real freedom? These Ten Words show us who God is, who we are, and how life works best—and it all begins with one foundation: worship God alone.
We continue The X Commandments series with “No Other Gods.” You radically love God by putting no other gods before Him. To put no other gods before Him is when nothing competes with your love for God! To put no other gods before Him is simply this: God comes first! We must tear down false gods in our life that we have put before God! This message will expose what false gods you have allowed in your life.

A look at Exodus 32 where Aaron and the Israelites quickly changed their focus from God to a man made idol. How does that relate today to our lives?
In his message No Other Gods, Pastor Steve Penate reminds us that the Ten Commandments are not about rules but about radical love and intimacy with God. To have “no other gods before Him” means nothing can compete with His presence or share covenant space with Him. In every generation, false gods—whether idols of stone, money, success, self, or culture—fight for our devotion. But just like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, when we refuse to bow, even in the fire, we encounter the true and living God who walks with us. Radical love leads to radical obedience, intimacy, and transformation.
This message covers Pastor Matt Wakefield's sermon on the First Commandment: “You shall have no other gods before Me.” He explains that the command is not about God competing with other deities but declaring His exclusive authority. Pastor Matt highlights how modern believers often create “idols” out of good things—family, work, money, or even ministry—when they take God's rightful place. He emphasizes that anything we depend on for security, identity, or fulfillment apart from God becomes an idol. The message calls the church to wholehearted devotion, warning that divided worship leads to spiritual compromise, but surrender to God alone brings life, freedom, and clarity of purpose .
That makes zero sense. “You shall have no other gods before me.” - Exodus 20:3 (NKJV)
لاَ يَكُنْ لَكَ آلِهَةٌ أُخْرَى أَمَامِي ـ خر ٢٠ : ٣
In week 2 of our series "Unlocked," we dive deep into the Ten Commandments and explore the first two commandments from Exodus 20. Pastor Brandon reminds us that God alone is meant for the throne of our hearts and of the freedom He offers when we give Him that position.
God led Israel to Mount Sinai so He could give them his commandments that would serve as evidence of their loyalty to Him, and our passage today starts with the first of the Ten.
A new MP3 sermon from Grace Reformed Baptist of Pine Bush is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: No Other Gods Subtitle: Ten Commandments Speaker: Paul Gordon Broadcaster: Grace Reformed Baptist of Pine Bush Event: Sunday Service Date: 7/20/2025 Bible: Exodus 20:1-3 Length: 52 min.
The sermon explores the foundational significance of the Ten Commandments, framing them not as a legalistic code but as principles for covenantal living rooted in a restored relationship with God. It emphasizes that these words, spoken from Sinai, are a call to undivided allegiance, rejecting all substitutes for the one true God who brought Israel out of Egypt and offers grace, security, and eternal life. The message underscores the importance of gratitude, honor, and vigilance against idolatry in all its forms—whether manifested in the pursuit of pleasure, wealth, or other worldly commitments—ultimately urging listeners to prioritize a heart-centered devotion to God above all else.
Exodus 20 : 1-3
We learned in our study of the "law of Moses" that the purpose of the Ten Commandments is to teach us how to love: first, to love God with all our heart, soul & might (Dt 6:5), and then to love our neighbor as ourselves (Lev 19:18). Considering these commandments as a whole, we see that the first four focus on loving God, and the final six focus on loving our neighbor. Today, we're going to look more deeply at the first two: 1) You shall have no other gods before Me (v 3); 2) You shall not make for yourself an idol (v 4). In order to understand them better, it's helpful to paraphrase verses 1-11. God's message in these verses is this: "I have already proved My love for you, My power, and My faithfulness by delivering you from Egypt and bringing you safely here. Now I'm asking you to 'marry Me,' that is, to love Me, to be loyal to Me, to treat Me respectfully, and to regularly spend time in personal fellowship with Me. I warn you, if you promise to do so and then don't, I'll react like a wounded spouse, and I'll punish you until you repent. But if you continue to love Me, be loyal to Me, show Me respect and fellowship with Me, I'll pour on you the blessings I promised generation after generation until the end of time." When we realize what God is saying in these verses, it is amazing how tender and vulnerable He was being toward Israel. Really He should never have had to say these things in the first place because if people really love Him, it would be automatic. There are two big questions today. They teach us about the first two of the Ten Commandments. First… Why does God tell us, “You shall have no other gods before me”? The answer is: “Because God is our only King and Lord.” Here's the second question: Why does God tell us, “You shall not make for yourself an image”? The answer is, “So we will serve God and nothing else.”

This new series, Jesus and the ten commandments, is a conversation on how Jesus embodies – and helps us to embody – the kind of life we are built for, and the kind of life framed by the Ten Words. Bill starts with a re-framing of the Ten Words – which we mistakenly call Commandments – as more about relationship and reality than about rules and restrictions. When the Ten Words are reduced to rules restricting what we think of as our freedom, we will try and find ways to do end-runs around them – and discover that they were actually protections put in place to enable human thriving the way God intended. Because Jesus is fully aware of this, He invites us to learn our lives from Him – to follow in His way. As we do so, allowing Him to shape us by alignment with Him, we discover that we live in the center of the Ten Words naturally and without thinking about it. They have become part of what it means for us to be human. By Bill Dogterom
What upsets you? What really makes your blood boil? We'd like to think it's injustice, or sin or the oppression of the weak….but usually, when we're honest…what bothers us most is whenever we're inconvenienced. Whenever something doesn't work out, I get overlooked….or something is just uncomfortable. The god of comfort desires our worship. He wants us to […]
During His life and ministry, Jesus made many outrageous claims. Incredible claims which were all proven true. Of everything He claimed to be, to do or know, of all the counter cultural truths he shared….none were as controversial as His claim in John 12. “I am the way, and the truth and the life.” No […]
We live in a culture that has elevated freedom, independence and self reliance to an unhealthy level. Above all, we desire to call the shots. We want to do what we choose when we choose it. We want the freedom to pursue our passions, the ability to decide for ourselves…..perhaps even to live for ourselves. […]
The wisest man who ever lived sought out to experience the “good things” in life. At the top of his list….was pleasure. Solomon denied himself no earthly thing… And yet he always came up empty. What can we learn from the life pursuits of Solomon? What promises does the ‘god of pleasure' make that he […]
Who is it that we serve? Who do we worship? For the believer the answer sounds obvious…Jesus! Right?!!?! With our mouths we claim Christ, but what about our hearts? What consumes our thoughts? Our emotions? What are we most excited about? Most concerned about? Do our attitudes and actions prove that Christ is our greatest pursuit….or are there “idols” we are worshiping. Idols? As in small figures from far away pagan lands…yes, and no. Idols are much shinier, much more accepted, and far more common than we believe. What if idolatry isn't an issue….what if it is the issue? What if we can pursue every false thought, pursuit and decision back to idolatry? Join us for “No other gods” as we unpack the lesser gods warring for our hearts!

What time is it? No, really. What’s the exact time? How do we know what the exact time is? Maybe your clock is a few seconds different from mine. The defacto standard is International Atomic Time, a weighted average of time kept by over 400 atomic clocks in 50 laboratories worldwide. That’s the source that’s trustworthy. When it comes to right and wrong, Pastor Greg Laurie says the trustworthy standard is God’s Word. And we’ll consult that standard today on A NEW BEGINNING.
