With Trump's unexpected victory in the popular vote and key swing states, and a likely Republican majority in Congress, significant changes to student loan policies may be on the horizon. We'll look at possible shifts in Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) that could make it harder to qualify, and the potential elimination of the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan. We'll discuss recent court rulings that could reshape repayment strategies, like the 8th Circuit Court decision on the Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) statute. We'll also touch on political dynamics influencing these changes, including Republican and Democratic strategies, the implications of past proposals like the Prosper Act, and what borrowers need to consider moving forward. Key moments: 04:18 Likely elimination of the SAVE plan — when should you consider switching to a different repayment option? 08:27 Republicans are making their own IDR plan and how past proposals threatened borrowers 18:42 Loan forgiveness potential might be more generous than we think 24:22 Potential for major policy changes under Trump's second term Like the show? Welcome to our recurring Money Matters segment! Every month, we're sitting down with Joe Reinke, co-founder of FitBUX, to discuss a finance issue relevant to physical therapists. This month we're talking the PROSPER Act, or how the government could get rid of loan forgiveness. The PROSPER Act was introduced in December, and will have to make its way through Congress before June. “PROSPER” stands for Promoting Real Opportunity, Success, and Prosperity through Education Reform, and it’s the new version of the Higher Education Act. Lost yet? So were we. So we sat down with Joe Reinke, co-founder of FitBUX, who specializes in student loans to discuss the PROSPER Act. Joe has worked with over 2,000 physical therapists and student physical therapists to help determine the best way to repay the mountain of debt we accrued during school. He’s actually read the PROSPER Act, all 500 pages (but he tells us this is nothing compared to reading the tax code cover to cover). Our question for Joe was, “What do we need to know about the PROSPER Act? How will this affect me as a physical therapist?” Talus Media Talks is a subsidiary of Talus Media: PT Views & PT News. It’s Monday, January 15th. This week, we have guest Joe Reinke of FiTBUX on the show to discuss the PROSPER Act (or, essentially, how your loan repayment could change). We’re reminding you about the Medicare Cap, talking ABPTRFE standards, and recapping some wins across the profession. Talus Media News is a subsidiary of Talus Media: PT Views & PT News. In a special episode of "Off The Cuff," Justin, Megan, Stephen, and Karen answer member questions on the House Republicans' Higher Education Act reauthorization bill, the PROSPER Act. Following up on a mid-December webinar focused on the basics of the new bill, members of the policy team dig into more specific questions on some of the bill's provisions. The team explains the philosophy behind some of the lawmakers' proposals, and explains how certain aspects of the bill — such as a revised R2T4 calculation and "aid like a paycheck" — might work together. The team also answers questions related to the Pell Grant program, student loans and repayment, counseling, and the Federal Work-Study program.
