Thank you for joining this week's edition of the Albany Update. On today's program, we'll look at the Biden Administration's plan to rescind something referred to as the Protect Life Rule. Elsewhere across the nation, a federal court has again allowed the Texas Heartbeat Law to stand. This lifesaving law is likely heading to the United State Supreme Court to determine its constitutionality, but even now it continues to save lives. Here in our home state, there is an update on vaccine mandates for health care workers and its good news for those seeking a religious exemption from the mandate. Then something that we haven't discussed in quite some time is the status of fantasy sports betting in the state. Oral arguments regarding the constitutionality of the Legislature's action were recently heard and a decision is expected soon. Let's get started. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/albanyupdate/support

In today's News: Supreme Court to settle Title X dispute  Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing two pro-life medical associations filed a Friend-of-the-Court brief yesterday, encouraging The U.S. Supreme Court to take a case concerning a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) rule that prevents federal family-planning funding under the Title X program from being used for abortions. The brief explains that the HHS final rule essentially revives one that the Supreme Court already found Constitutional in a previous case and should therefore be upheld. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit blocked the HHS regulations in Maryland while a 9th Circuit decision in a separate case upheld them. The rulings create a split between the circuits that only the Supreme Court can resolve.  Biden promises funding for Planned Parenthood  Should Joe Biden become president after recounts and court cases involving allegations of massive election fraud, he says he will sign an executive order on week one of any potential presidency to force American taxpayers to fund the Planned Parenthood abortion business. Even though Biden may not be certified as the new president, he has already formed a presidential transition team and that team has released a set of priorities of the first things he would do in office. On the list is a promise to reverse President Donald Trump’s Protect Life Rule that make sure taxpayers aren’t forced to fund groups such as Planned Parenthood that perform and promote abortions in other countries. During a Town Hall in South Carolina Biden confirmed that one of his first acts as president would be using taxpayer dollars behind the global abortion agenda.  Global abortion giants praise Biden  Abortion giants around the world have celebrated Biden’s reported presidential victory by releasing a series of statements praising his pro-abortion position and policies. Biden was announced as the winner of the 2020 presidential election by media outlets during the weekend. Some remaining us states continue to count their votes. Following the announcement, global abortion giants took to social media to congratulate Biden and Vice President-apparent Kamala Harris for their commitment to expand abortion.  South African rector retires  The Rev. Dr. Carlos Walter Winterle has announced his retirement as rector of the Lutheran Theological Seminary (LTS) in Tshwane, Pretoria in South Africa. Winterle, who turned 70 earlier this year, said, “It is time to retire and give way to the younger generation.” Succeeding Winterle as rector of the LTS is the Rev. Dr. Heinz Hiestermann. Winterle served as president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil from 1998-2006. He has spent the next 14 years serving throughout Africa: four years in Kenya; seven in Cape Town, South Africa; and the past three as the rector of LTS in Pretoria. He has also been heavily involved with missions and theological education in Mozambique.

Religious liberty threatened in Virginia

In today's News: Religious liberty threatened in Virginia  Three Christian schools and a Christian network of pregnancy centers are suing Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring in order to prevent Virginia from implementing two pro-LGBT laws that force “people of faith to adopt a particular government ideology under threat of punishment.” The two laws purport to prevent “discrimination” against LGBT people but force Christian ministries to choose between violating their sincerely-held religious beliefs or paying hefty fines, as much as $100,000 per offense. Virginia Values, which Gov. Ralph Northam signed the day before Easter Sunday, compels churches, religious schools, and Christian ministries to hire employees who do not share their stated beliefs on marriage, sexuality and gender identity. A companion law requires ministries and others like them to pay for transgender surgery in employee health care plans, a procedure that violates these ministries’ convictions.  AMA supports abortion  The American Medical Association (AMA) is advocating openly for abortions. Yesterday, it joined Planned Parenthood, the ACLU and other pro-abortion groups in a petition urging the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down President Donald Trump’s Protect Life Rule, The Hill reports. The Title X rule requires Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers to completely separate their abortion businesses from their taxpayer-funded services. That means housing their family planning services in separate buildings with separate staff from their abortion businesses and a denial of funds if they fail to do so. Planned Parenthood refused to comply and gave up about $60 million federal funding. The billion-dollar abortion chain also is suing to overturn the rule, and federal courts have issued conflicting rulings on the matter. Now, Planned Parenthood is turning to the Supreme Court for an answer, and the largest doctors’ association in the U.S. is supporting it.  Lawmakers push for abortion up to birth  Massachusetts lawmakers may try to push through a bill this fall that would legalize abortions through all nine months and allow young teens to get abortions without a parent’s knowledge or consent. The Roe Act has been stalled in the state legislature for 20 months, but abortion activists are demanding that lawmakers pass it in the wake of the death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, according to the New Boston Post. The bill would eliminate most regulations and restrictions on abortion in Massachusetts. It would allow abortions through all nine months of pregnancy, even if there is no physical threat to the mother’s life and could put young sexual abuse victims at greater risk by eliminating the state parental consent requirement. Massachusetts Citizens for Life said the bill also allows for “passive infanticide” by eliminating a requirement to provide medical care to a baby who is born alive after an abortion.

No Abortion Funds for Title X

Back in 1970, the Nixon administration enacted the Title X Family Funding Program. As described on the HHS website, “For more than 40 years, Title X family planning clinics have played a critical role in ensuring access to a broad range of family planning and related preventive health services for millions of low-income or uninsured individuals.” For years abortion providers were unable to access these funds, until President Clinton decided otherwise. Since then, abortion mills like Planned Parenthood have happily tapped into these funds to make sure that, utilizing some creative bookkeeping, women from low-income households have access to abortion and abortion counseling. But no more. In June of last year, the Trump Administration announced the Protect Life Rule, which prohibits fund recipients from providing abortion counseling or being “co-located” with an abortion clinic. Planned Parenthood and a number of states immediately sued to block the Protect Life Rule from taking effect. Last week, after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals refused to stop the Rule, the Administration announced that the Rule will take effect immediately. Naturally, Planned Parenthood President Leana Wen called the decision “devastating news,” and promised to continue legal action. (Wen has since been removed as president). Here's why she said this. According to the Catholic News Agency, “The Protect Life Rule will strip about $60 million in federal funding from Planned Parenthood, whose clinics both refer for abortion services and are often co-located within abortion facilities. Planned Parenthood presently receives about one-fifth of the total amount of Title X funds distributed and serves about 40 percent of all clients who benefit from Title X.” Planned Parenthood quickly announced plans to create an emergency fund (meaning they'll shake down their donors) to replace the lost dollars, and we're already starting to hear about the tragedy of lost “health care” funds for low-income women. The head of California's largest recipient of Title X funds provided a typical response, “We will continue to pursue relief through the courts to protect access to essential health services for the millions of low-income patients served by Title X nationwide.” Don't buy the frantic wording. Not a single penny has been reduced from Title X funding. Title X money is still available to, and I quote, “assist in the establishment and operation of voluntary family planning projects which provide … natural family planning methods, infertility services, and services for adolescents; highly effective contraceptive methods; breast and cervical cancer screening and prevention services that correspond with nationally recognized standards of care; STD and HIV prevention education, counseling, testing, and referrals . . . and other preventive health services.” That sounds like a pretty robust list of services available to low-income women. The money simply can't be used to further abortion. And it's unclear why this should bother Planned Parenthood anyway, given its claim that abortion is just 3 percent of the services it provides to women. All this gnashing of teeth reveals how ludicrous that claim has always been. Now, as Yogi Berra said, “It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future.” But here's mine: The Protect Life Rule will probably remain in effect during the remainder of the Trump Administration, but should a Democratic contender take residence in the White House, it will be dead on day 1 of their administration. This brings me to three points. First, elections matter. Second, while I am grateful for the Trump Administration's commitment to life, shame on the Republican majority in Congress that has consistently failed to de-fund Planned Parenthood. Governance by administrative rule will not protect the lives of the unborn in the long run. And third, the fight remains: Not only to make abortion illegal, but also unthinkable.

Planned Parenthood in Turmoil: Interview with Troy Newman of Operation Rescue | The Mark Harrington Show | 7-18-19 The abortion giant Planned Parenthood (PP) is in a “no Wen situation” after firing President Leanna Wen. According to reports, Wen was fired because she wants a more aggressively pro-abortion activist as its leader as it heads into the crucial 2020 presidential election. Her departure followed a series of negotiations that appeared to end acrimoniously on Tuesday. In a Twitter post, Dr. Wen said her fate had been decided at a “secret meeting,” which the organization disputed. She later issued a statement saying she was “leaving because the new board chairs and I have philosophical differences over the direction and future of Planned Parenthood.” She believed “the best way to protect abortion care is to be clear that it is not a political issue but a health care one, and that we can expand support for reproductive rights.” “It’s probably no coincidence that Wen was fired the day after the Trump Administration’s Protect Life Rule went into effect after the Ninth Circuit delivered Planned Parenthood a huge defeat,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue. “It is obvious that Planned Parenthood’s trope about abortion being only three percent of their so-called healthcare services was a smokescreen, The Board just proved that Planned Parenthood is about abortion. Period.” You can watch The Mark Harrington Show on Mark’s Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts.
